Works by local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winning art from 14 other PMMA® communities. More than 170 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition. The
STAFF SPOTLIGHT:
Ilona Roczo Ilona Roczo is our housekeeper in Independent Living and keeps everything spotless. She has many other talents, including baking and gardening. Ilona is always making fabulous treats such as the peach pie in the photo…or what’s left of it. Our residents come in first thing in the morning to see what tasty things Ilona has left for them in the cozy corner. She will pick up various fresh fruit such as grapes, cherries, and plums to share. Since her garden is coming along, she has been bringing cucumbers and peppers. Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of PMMA’s wellness programs, which focus on mental,

“Patchwork Prairie,” a Mixed Media/Crafts entry by Sarah Schaeffer, will be featured on the pull-out postcards included in the 2023 calendar. “C2C Baby Afghan,” a Fiber Arts entry by Dorothy Gabel, will be included in the calendar’s honorable mention gallery. “We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Joy Wiggins, marketing coordinator. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of senior artists. Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.” A copyrighted program of PMMA, Art is Ageless is open exclusively to people aged 65 and older. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years. PMMA’s Art is Ageless program encourages Manor of the Plains residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

Favorite Recipes As the holiday season approaches, we are thinking about the good food we’ve prepared during the holidays. Maureen’s family could never get enough of her pumpkin bread! Shirley was famous for her rhubarb pie, passed down to her from her mother. Our new accountant wanted to share a family favorite, BBQ meatballs. Stay tuned, as we will have more delicious recipes to share in our November newsletter.
From the kitchen of Maureen Schlereth She says, “When I made this I could not make it fast enough as it disappeared quick.” From the kitchen of Shirley Richardson She says, “This is a recipe we used when I was growing up and I made it for my own family when I married. We did not always put a top crust on as the filling forms its own top. This recipe came from an old Search Light book out of a Household Magazine. My Mother used it a lot and it shows a lot of wear & tear. I now have the book as a keepsake. u

MEET YOUR NEW NEIGHBOR: In July, Nancy Giebler became one of the newest residents in Manor of the Plains’ Independent Living neighborhood when she moved to the community from Hays, Kansas. Nancy made the move in order to be closer to her son, Steve, after her husband of 62 years passed away in June. “We have three children, Steve just happens to be the lucky one who lives in Kansas and got stuck with me,” said Nancy. Despite not knowing much about Manor of the Plains before moving in, Nancy is happy in her new environment. “I didn’t know what to expect, I’m in the independent part of the building

and it’s nice,” said Nancy. “Hopefully I’ll be here for a while.” Nancy has also found some solace in the social life offered by the community. “I’ve made some friends and we do some things together…it’s been enjoyable,” said Nancy. While she doesn’t claim to have any hobbies, Nancy does admit to being a bit of a bookworm. “I love to read—I read pretty much anything—I have some I’ve read more than once,” said Nancy. In addition to Steve, who’s an art teacher in Cimarron, Nancy and her husband, Kenny, have a son, Mark who lives in Florida and a daughter, Christine who lives in Colorado. u
