Four local artists among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners Four winning artists in Manor of the Plains’ annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will be featured in the 2021 Art is Ageless calendar produced by PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America). More than 160 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition. “Flower Dance,” a quilting entry by Kae Bryant, “Storyteller,” a painting by Mary Anne Hendrix, “Kansas Sunset,” a painting by Linda Kobs, and “Cox Comb,” a quilting entry by Lilli Peters, will appear in the calendar when it is released this fall. “Mowgli the Mutt,” a drawing by Joanne Clarke, will be featured on the pull-out postcards in the “Storyteller” painting by Mary Anne Hendrix 2021 calendar. In addition, “Afternoon Tea,” a painting by Sarah Schaeffer, and “Summer Sun Flowers,” a sculpture/3-D entry by Joan Vogel, will be featured on Art is Ageless greeting cards.

Girl Scout earns Gold Award for garden beds Misty Cole, the Girl Scout who rebuilt Manor of the Plains’ garden beds, has recently been awarded the organization’s Gold Award—it’s top and most-prestigious award—for her work. Earning the award, which is comparable to the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout, was an honor Misty had set her sights on upon entering the Girl Scouts. “When I started Girl Scouts 13 years ago, there was a girl who had just recently earned her Gold Award and I went to her ceremony and I told myself, ‘I want to be that girl,’” said Misty. The project resulted in six, 10-foot and two, 18-foot beds and took Misty a year and half of aroundthe-clock work to complete. However, despite the lengthy— and sometimes late in the day—disruptions, Misty was grateful to the ongoing patience and support of the residents and staff.

Scout – continued from page 1 “Some nights I felt really bad because I’d go late into the night, but they didn’t make even one complaint,” said Misty. Part of the reason why the project took Misty so long to complete was that she was required to do much of it by hand, including having to relocate the dirt from existing beds to 50-gallon drums. “I actually did some math to see how many pounds of dirt I moved and discovered that each 10-foot bed held two tons of dirt—it was exhausting,” said Misty. But creating the beds was only half of the work. Misty also had to raise the money needed to pay for the materials. “I held three major garage sales and made a newsletter that I would hang

on the door and at my table to explain who I was and what the money was going towards,” said Misty. “I also asked friends and family for donations.” Misty raised nearly $2,000 and the names of those who contributed are listed along the boxes now in use. Misty is currently in her second year at Dodge City Community College, where she is studying criminal justice
with plans to become an officer with the Dodge City Police Department. While we congratulate Misty on her award and thank her for her hard work, we also want to recognize the following MOP residents who participated in Girl Scouts: Shirley Ballard, Alverna Cantrell, Doll Yunker, Shirley Richardson, and Jean Honnold. u

In the spotlight: Brittany Gladbach Manor of the Plains has hired Brittany Gladbach as the new director of sales and marketing. “I have always enjoyed interacting with seniors, and I knew at a point in time I would be working in some capacity with them. I love the opportunity to learn from those who enjoy sharing their stories and knowledge they have to offer, and in return taking their advice to live out in my own personal life,” said Brittany. “At Manor of the Plains, I look forward to continuing our mission of providing quality services while guided by Christian values for those throughout the region, as residents make their transitions to the variety levels of care that we offer.” Brittany spent the last five years in a variety of sales and marketing roles in both the medical and manufacturing industries. She was the member services/events coordinator for the Farmington Chamber of Commerce, a sales/marketing representative for MOCAP and a field clinical application specialist at Veran Medical Technologies. “We’re excited to have Brittany join our team and lead our marketing efforts among the Dodge City community, our residents, their families and our staff. She has great enthusiasm, business sense and people skills that makes her a great fit as we work to carry out our mission,” said John Van Hook, executive director of Manor of the Plains. Even though life on our campus is a little different than usual, Brittany is
feeling right at home ever since she started her new position at the end of June. “I enjoy being able to walk into a community where you are able to tell everyone is happy to be here, even with a mask covering his or her smile. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms and answers to any question I have, even the silly ones. I have been fortunate to have both coworkers and residents who are so welcoming, especially after having some big shoes to fill,” said Brittany. Originally from Farmington, Missouri, Brittany moved to Dodge City in May with her fiancé, Joe, who recently accepted a position in the
athletic department at Dodge City Community College. The couple has a “fur baby” named Harper. “We can’t wait to become part of the Dodge City community,” said Brittany. u
