Something’s cooking in the kitchen with Stacy Activity Assistant Stacy Comstock loves to coordinate cooking activities with the Assisted Living residents at Farmington Presbyterian Manor. Each month Stacy and a group of residents gather to prepare home-cooked meals and invite friends to enjoy the delicious fruits (or veggies) of their labor. Recently, residents from the Memory Care neighborhood joined in on the fun and helped out by stringing garden-fresh green beans. These residents’ participation was especially appropriate given the role food plays in our individual memories.
New raised beds put the fun back in gardening We have a thriving crop of tomato plants this summer, thanks to our new raised garden beds. These are the perfect height for residents, like Wanda Chatman and Joan Hampton to safely enjoy getting a little dirt under their fingernails - minus all the kneeling and back pain! Did you know that adding Epsom salt to the soil makes tomatoes more flavorful? That's one of many tips we've learned from our green thumbed residents. u

In the belief that recipes are meant to be passed on so that they can be preserved, we included resident Mary Carron’s recipe for coleslaw. Give it a try at your next family gathering. u
Coleslaw
Mary Carron
Ingredients: 1 medium head of cabbage, cut thin 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/4 cup oil 1 tsp dried mustard
Directions: Make the sauce by combining sugar, cider vinegar, oil and dried mustard in a small pan over low heat, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved. Pour sauce over cabbage & green pepper in a bowl and mix. As a bonus, this recipe can be used for potato salad as well.
Come on let’s dance! This summer, Johnny Washboard and Friend wowed us with a toe tapping performance. Residents couldn’t resist the fun and joined in with some dancing. Chaplains learning and team-building For the first time, chaplains from across our PMMA communities gathered together in August for learning, and team-building. The chaplains came to Wichita to participate in the Global Leadership Summit, a worldwide event simulcast out of Chicago, that focused not only on leadership but on personal growth as well. “The variety of teachers used the accomplishments in their lives to inspire and motivate each of us to continue to develop in our own lives,” said Wichita Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Greg Spring. “Together our chaplains learned, were inspired and motivated.”
“I took pages of notes that I will be reviewing and applying where needed,” said Chaplain Spring, sharing that he already has plenty of thoughts to share with the rest of the leadership team at Wichita Presbyterian Manor during the devotional at their daily meeting. “Leadership is about building relationships,” said Rev. Dutta as she recapped what she took away from
the summit. “Caring for residents or employees, and treating them as a family is the key to leadership.” The chaplains say they were grateful for the opportunity to keep growing. “On behalf of all our Chaplains, I would like to thank PMMA for investing in our lives and careers by making the Global Leadership Summit a Networking opportunity,” said Chaplain Spring. u
Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Rev. Dinah Dutta agrees. “I was reassured, and uplifted by the talks, and blessed to meet the other chaplains,” she said. The chaplains did spend some time away from the summit for meals and a group activity. PMMA CEO Bruce Shogren joined the chaplains, offering uplifting words about the importance of the chaplains’ work in each of our PMMA communities, which underscores service guided by Christian values. Rev. Dutta appreciated how the chaplains encouraged each other “to love one another, respect, and be part of our mission.” The chaplains left the conference with a lot to think about and plenty of ideas to take back to their communities.

Farmington Presbyterian Manor shares customer service survey responses Farmington Presbyterian Manor continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys. Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. The graphic highlights some of the survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score. Between July 2021 and June 2022, Farmington Presbyterian Manor residents and their families gave the community high scores for demonstrating dignity and respect, cleanliness, the professional therapy offered. They also said they would recommend the community to others.

“The staff are amazing,” said one resident’s family member. “The service was awesome. Overall, we appreciate everything.” Another said they would recommend the community. “I would tell them how nice it is and how well they care of people.”
