New program uses therapy to ‘rebuild’ residents Residents looking for techniques to improve and sustain strength, balance and mobility now have a new tool, thanks to Rebuild Me. The program, which is relatively new to Aberdeen Village, consists of progressive exercises to restore muscle strength. We asked Sandra Barnes, life enrichment director, to offer insight into this exciting new program. Can you explain the new fitness program? The Rebuild Me programs we offer for skilled nursing and assisted living residents are yearlong programs with monthly video exercises that focus on strengthening, stretching, range of motion and muscle memory. Much like physical therapy, the exercise portion is progressive and varied in order to continue the muscle strengthening process. The program includes fun RECIPE - continued from page 1

quarterly activities that increase neuromuscular communication and resident interaction. We have also included monthly topical conversations in the form of videos with coordinating handouts. These conversations cover topics relevant to seniors and help us cultivate a culture of wellness.
Because Rebuild Me can be implemented by existing activity staff and the curriculum is reusable, we can offer a comprehensive wellness program without the expense of additional staff.
What are your reasons for introducing the program? Our sister community successfully implemented Rebuild Me, so we decided to try it. We offer the program in collaboration with our AEGIS therapy department. Their restorative aide does the exercise part and my staff is responsible for the brain-health and fun parts.

Staff sets fresh goals for the new year We asked some of our staff if they had resolutions for the coming year. We hope you’ll be as inspired by their goals as we are. Cassandra Everett, medical records coordinator Do you normally make New Year’s resolutions? I did every year when I was younger, but the last few years I haven’t made any, since they are a repeat of things such as losing weight, saving money and paying off car and school loans. Do you have one for this coming year? If so, what is it? Since my cancer diagnosis in February, I want to keep a positive attitude, be better at my walk with God, make healthy choices and do something special for myself. Do you find that resolutions change your behavior or do they not end up lasting very long? I think it depends on the resolutions and the person. Everyone starts out gung-ho, but over time things happen and you’re not as focused on your resolutions. If your resolution is a simple and attainable task, you can reach your goal. The bigger the goal, the more time it takes, but you can prevail over time. Sheryl Nelson, MDS coordinator Do you normally make New Year’s resolutions?
Heather Benney, director of nursing
I don’t usually do New Year’s resolutions because I can never keep them. Do you have one for this coming year? If so, what is it? I don’t for this coming year, but last year I set a goal to better organize my home. I started with a bookcase, then a drawer, etc. It gave me a sense of satisfaction to see the difference. I have not decided what to do for this year, but am considering continuing on with the same goal since I did not get all the areas organized that I wanted to. Do you find that resolutions change your behavior or do they not end up lasting very long? This particular resolution helped me look at things in a new way when I bought something or was storing something so I would not have to go back and organize that item or area at a later time.
Do you normally make New Year’s resolutions? I normally enjoy the thought of a New Year’s resolution, but I try to not openly speak about them so I only disappoint myself when I don’t stick with it. Do you have one for this coming year? If so, what is it? Yes, in the coming year I want to challenge myself to do some formal exercise at least three days a week. Do you find that resolutions change your behavior or do they not end up lasting very long? My New Year’s resolution typically changes my behavior for a week or two. My motivation to do new things and form new habits seems low this time of year because the days are short and the weather is cold. ◆
