It is home to one of the world’s oldest continuing cultures, the Noongar Aboriginal people, who celebrate their profound connection to Boodja (Country) through unique stories, language, ceremonies, art, song, and dance, which have been passed down for more than 50,000 years. Here, trails lead to unseen places among towering forests and along windswept coastlines, whale song echoes across turquoise bays, and the scent of saltbush and peppermint drift on the breeze. Country calls us to step in rhythm with it. To slow down, listen, and connect. Let ourselves wander, wonder, and dream a little deeper. FI S H I N G Since the early days of the Noongar people, the ocean and waterways of the South West have provided excellent fishing. More than 1000kms of coastline offer opportunities to catch abalone, bluefin tuna, cod, crab, dhufish, groper, herring, rock lobster (crayfish), salmon (ngari), samson, skippy, snapper, squid, and tailor. While the rivers and dams are bursting with bream, flathead, marron (during season), rainbow trout, redfin perch, and whiting. You need a WA fishing license to catch freshwater fish and marron, as well as fish from a boat, which you can obtain at fish.wa.gov.au.

CAV ES More than 150 limestone caves lie beneath the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, each a natural time capsule holding stories of the history of the South West and local Noongar people. Explore ancient fossils, underground caverns, and spectacular crystal formations. Jewel Cave The biggest show cave in Western Australia comprised of three massive chambers. It features one of the longest straw stalactites found in the world, measuring 580cm. Fully guided tours are available from 9am to 5pm. Albany’s Historic Whaling Station Learn about the last operating whaling station in Australia. Climb aboard the Cheynes IV - the world’s only preserved whale chaser ship, view a giant blue whale skeleton, and explore the wildlife park and wildflower garden. Busselton Jetty The longest wooden-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching 1.841km out to sea. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk or rest your feet and catch the electric solar-powered train to the end. There you’ll find one of just six underwater observatories in the world.

Canal Rocks Wander over the Indian Ocean along a narrow timber bridge, the ocean roaring below. Thousands of years of swells have carved out a channel between the granite rocks, stretching hundreds of metres. The Gap and Natural Bridge Just outside Albany, this 40m high platform places you directly over the crashing ocean waves. Wheelchair accessible, a second path also leads to the Natural Bridge – a window carved by the elements. Lighthouses Head up the historic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia and see where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet. Further north, Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse offers guided tours and breathtaking panoramic views. Sugarloaf Rock Rising above the ocean like a pyramid, sunset here is nothing short of spectacular. Situated within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, just outside Dunsborough.

Tuart-Ludlow Forest, Capel Explore paths through the largest remaining pure forest of Tuart trees in the world. Trees here get more than 33m high, and are unique to this region - only growing in a coastal limestone landscape.

M A R I N E LI FE From Southern Right Whales calving off the coast, to dolphins cruising the shallows, and stingrays stopping by just to say hello, the beautiful blue waters of the South West are bursting with wildlife. Early in the season, whales travel from Bremer Bay to Albany and Augusta, before heading northwards.
