WELCOME TO WHERE2PLAY BASEBALL & SOFTBALL

Travel baseball and softball have evolved into a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem defined by rapid facility development, a massive tournament landscape and rising expectations from players and their families.

Over the past 17 years as publisher of Sports Planning Guide, I’ve had a front-row seat to that growth. We’ve tracked the venues, the operators and the economic impact driving communities to invest heavily in the space.

I also spend my nights and weekends coaching a travel softball team, which means I get to see this industry from between the foul poles. I’ve navigated confusing registration portals at midnight, paid the tournament fees, absorbed “stay to play” hotel fees and heard the blowback from parents who feel they’ve been nickeled and dimed or drove two hours to a tournament we had no business being in. Both perspectives are baked into this guide.

What I can tell you is that the baseball and softball tournament industry is at an inflection point. Private equity has arrived in force and many of the top names in tournament ball are all backed by investment groups who, at the end of the day, are more focused on ROI than RBIs. The national platforms are scaling aggressively, and consolidation at the top end of the market is accelerating in ways the industry has not seen before.

At the same time, the middle of the market—independent operators, regional tournament companies, and the travel clubs hosting their own invitationals, remain the backbone of where most families actually play. Our research estimates that the U.S. hosts somewhere between 35,000 and 45,000 organized travel baseball and softball tournaments annually, and the significant majority of those events are run not by national brands, but by local and regional operators who know the fields, know the

coaches and have built their reputations event by event. This segment of the market is approaching a generational transition as owner-operators move toward retirement. It represents both a challenge and an opportunity for anyone reading this guide.

The infrastructure side of the industry is equally active. Sports Planning Guide tracked 154 new sports tourism facility announcements in the past year, 37 of which include baseball or softball fields. Communities are making significant public and private investments to capture the sports tourism dollar, and the competition for tournament bookings among those facilities is only going to intensify as they come online.

For a deeper look at these trends, I invite you to read our full industry analysis, The Diamond Divide, at sportsplanningguide.com/diamonddivide. It is the most comprehensive look at this landscape we have published, and I think you will find it useful whether you play in tournaments, plan or host them.

This guide is designed to help you get to work. Inside, you will find a directory of 160 baseball and softball fields and facilities across the country, each profiled with the information coaches, leagues and tournament planners need to make informed decisions.

You will also find profiles of nearly 60 tournament companies including the major players, the circuits, the sanctioning bodies, and the operators who fill calendars and bring teams to these facilities. This list is a serious, vetted starting point.

If your organization belongs in a future edition and is not here yet, I want to hear from you. Reach out to me and we will make sure you are on our radar for the next edition.

The field is chalked. Let’s play ball.

Can the Savannah Bananas Save Baseball?

AS YOUTH PARTICIPATION WANES, ORGANIZATIONS SEEK WAYS TO BRING BACK THE FUN IN AMERICA’S PASTIME

Allie Lafon, wise beyond her 15 years of age, believes baseball is meant to be difficult. “They call it a game of inches for a reason,” says Lafon, a pitcher and middle infielder. She and her twin sister, Audrey Lafon, both of suburban Atlanta, thrive on the mental and physical demands required to excel at America’s pastime.

That’s why they have continued on the path less chosen for young female athletes by playing hardball since they were four. This spring, they made the local high school’s junior varsity team and are travel team regulars in co-ed and all-girls events.

They play in tournaments at Georgia’s many venues like LakePoint Sports, as well as in Branson, Missouri; Panama City Beach, Florida; and other sports tourism hotbeds. The Lafons also participate in USA Baseball’s Trailblazer program for girls and have competed in Baseball for All’s national youth girls tournament. Their all-girls team also earned a coveted spot in the inaugural Youth Banana Ball Tournament, organized by the Savannah Bananas and Athletx Sports Group, in Cleveland in 2024. Their team made the championship round. While they also play travel and varsity softball (a fall sport in the Peach State), baseball is their clear preference, as any of their neighbors can tell from the slinging in their back yard. “I like the competitiveness of it,” says Audrey, a catcher.

Baseball’s slow-burn nature is clearly appealing to the Lafons and a significant number of children of all ages, but it’s never been for anyone. Now, the troubling trend for the sport is that noticeably fewer athletes believe it’s for them.

“We’ve lost the ability to recognize that it should be fun, and it should be a little bit silly along the way”

The Bananas always go all out.

According to the Aspen Institute’s Project Play, baseball has experienced a 19.3% decline in core participation among 6- to 12-year-olds within the past five years. Among 13- to 17-year-olds, it’s a 16.2% decrease in the same time span. However, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association reports casual participation is at an all-time high of 16.7 million.

Jessica Beaudry, founder of the travel sports agency 3UPSports who specializes in baseball and hockey events, says kids playing the diamond sport are cracking under the pressure from overzealous coaches and parents with unrealistic expectations.

“We’ve lost the ability to recognize that it should be fun, and it should be a little bit silly along the way,” says Beaudry.

Banana Ball Catches On

The Savannah Bananas have been serious about being silly since their original iteration as a college summer team flopped a decade ago.

Fans First Entertainment, run by Jessie Cole, took over in 2016. There were hints as to what was to come back then, but it wasn’t until the Bananas left the Coastal Plain League to play their fast-paced, jovial style of ball that the phenomenon took off. Choreographed dance routines, trick plays, and a set game clock are

among the elements that separate the experience from a traditional day at the ballpark. All addresses concerns about a slow, if not boring, pace that many attribute to the sport’s struggle to maintain younger audiences.

Banana Ball is an unquestionable hit. The national tour, featuring six independent professional teams, sells out major league venues, including Raymond James Stadium, the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and site of three Super Bowls.

The players proverbially and literally let down their hair, which is often dyed a neon color in a sign of the relaxed atmosphere. Bronson Balholm, a catcher for the Party Animals, the Bananas’ chief rival, goes even farther by selecting a fan at each game to paint his fingernails. Teams are asked, and more than willingly oblige, to interact with spectators before and after the games.

“‘We’re fanatical about the fan’ is what we like to say,” says Balholm, who has built a personal brand around the motto “Catch Kindness,” which extends to his off-the-field venture of teaching STEMbased baseball lessons at local schools. Balholm has degrees in physics and aerospace engineering from Arizona State University.

Banana Ball players like Balholm and shortstop Ryan Cox see themselves as ambassadors, not just for their style of play but for the sport. They try to inject their love of the game at youth camps and tournaments the Bananas run, such as the event the Lafons attended.

Allie Lafon appreciates the Bananas’ effort and sees the benefits in her performance. “When it’s low stress and I’m just playing loose, I’m having fun and doing a lot better,” she says.

Cox builds connections to fans via social media posts, which clearly demonstrate the fun he and the kids are having in the relaxed training sessions. Cox notes there are important messages that’s often lost in travel tournaments like he used to play—namely, that it’s just a game and it’s okay to strike out occasionally.

“Just because you were 4-for-4 or 0-for-4, that doesn’t determine who you are,” says Cox, who is conscious about not overreacting to an error during the game. “If I make a mistake, watch my reaction; don’t just watch the highlights,” he says.

Looking for Love of the Game

Matt Loucks co-founded Glowball with the purpose of teaching baseball and softball players and families to lighten up.

Banana Ball at Petco Park in San Diego.

Glowball games are played under black lights with lasers, UV face paint, and music. It’s not uncommon to see players wear glow-in-the-dark tutus and face paint.

Created in the Pacific Northwest, the company has expanded to provide this unusual experience across the country, typically after kids play regular games. It’s a low-pressure situation, in which the adults pitch and the children are the base coaches.

Loucks describes the offering as the antidote for the seriousness of ailing baseball. “It’s pretty bad when you’re seeing kids that are nine and 10 years old talking about leaving the game because of how much pressure is put on them,” he says. “There’s no college recruiter that’s

going to go look at a nine-year-old. It’s just crazy.”

Beaudry and Loucks urge parents to combat burnout by pushing against perceived or genuine pressure to specialize in a single sport like baseball. “Professional sports don’t play 12 months a year, and there’s a reason for that,” Beaudry notes.

Amanda Shank, executive vice president of strategic initiatives at Unrivaled Sports, which acquired Ripken Baseball in 2023, agrees with some of the criticisms leveled at travel baseball. She said Unrivaled and Ripken have adapted programming to encourage building friendships and memories and not focus solely on taking home trophies.

Its fastest-growing event series is All Ripken Games, which Shank says blends a tournament experience with training and camaraderie. The point is to foster enjoyment, which will create a broad base of participants and increase business for rights holders and event operators.

“Children don’t need to be pushed or pressured to help them improve; we need to teach them and let them love the game,” says Shank. “Event organizers should focus on creating an environment where kids enjoy playing and providing quality instruction and encouragement that meets them where they are. Improvement will naturally happen from there, and they’ll want to keep playing.”

Youth Softball’s Future: Safety, Tech and Performance Trends

DISCOVER HOW INNOVATION IS RESHAPING SOFTBALL FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF YOUNG PLAYERS

Youth softball is evolving faster than ever, driven by a wave of innovations in safety, equipment, training and strategy. From advanced arm support and impact-monitoring helmets to high-tech bats, footwear, and virtual reality systems, every aspect of the game is being reimagined to improve performance while reducing injury risk. Even communication and analytics are moving into the youth spectrum, giving coaches and players real-time insights that were once the domain of professional programs. Together, these developments are shaping the next era of softball to be smarter, safer and more technologically advanced at every level.

New safety and equipment trends

As youth sports push for a deeper understanding of the physical demands placed on young athletes, advancements in softball equipment are becoming increasingly focused on performance optimization and injury prevention.

For pitchers, stress on the shoulder and elbow remain a key concern, with research from The Kinetic Arm noting that young athletes experiencing arm pain often display altered

mechanics and increased force at release. The response is newer forms of arm support, designed to stabilize both joints during high-stress pitching motions while still allowing full range of motion. This is an important shift toward proactive injury prevention, especially for young athletes who often don’t have access to the best doctors.

Player safety is also driving innovation in protective gear. Helmet technology now includes impact-monitoring capabilities that allow coaches and trainers to better assess potential injuries in real time, alongside improvements in ventilation and weight distribution that make equipment more practical for extended use. These developments signal a shift in prioritizing athlete safety, which had been neglected for far too long, even at the youth level, where managing risk is even more important than improving performance.

On the equipment side of advancements, bat construction, including refined composite materials, larger sweet spots and more balanced swing weights, help hitters generate more consistent contact and adapt their approach at the plate. On the movement side, footwear innovations are enhancing stability and acceleration across different playing surfaces, working to support quicker movements and more efficient play.

Immersive VR and mobile training

A technology shift has begun in the way that softball players, and by association baseball players, are being trained. Recent improvements to virtual reality are matching the speed and precision of modern softball with tools like TrainVR, which recreates in-game scenarios by using a headset and bat sensor. Players can perform in a simulated batter’s box and face lifelike pitching scenarios. The system tracks the batter’s swing decisions and timing, offering immediate feedback that helps to sharpen pitch recognition, one of the most difficult skills to develop through traditional practice. This means more meaningful repetitions without the physical strain of live pitching, all while building confidence at the plate. By compressing game-like experiences into shorter training sessions, players are also allowed to see more pitches in less time to accelerate development similarly to how elite athletes train. Coaches can also tailor sessions to specific weaknesses, whether that involves recognizing off-speed pitches or improving reaction time.

Another tech advancement, which many in the pro sports realm are already deeply familiar with, is analytics. Launched in March 2026, Ember Sports’ mobile-based hitting and pitching analyzers deliver metrics such as exit

velocity, launch angle, pitch speed and strike zone location directly through your smartphone. Integrated video tools also allow athletes and coaches to review mechanics frame by frame, compare performances over time and adjust where needed.

Improved communication and strategy

Professional-grade communication tech is increasingly influencing how softball teams operate on the field, with encrypted systems originally developed for higher levels of play now accessible to youth programs. Having this level of tech is enabling coaches to transmit pitch calls, defensive shifts and strategic adjustments in real time by reducing reliance on hand signals and verbal instructions.

Wearable “mobile solutions”—let’s just call them smart wristbands—allow coaches to send plays and instructions directly to each player’s own device so that everyone receives information at the same time. The goal is that with multi-angle visibility and clear, instant displays, athletes will be able to respond quicker and more confidently, even under pressure.

These types of systems also integrate analytics, allowing coaches to measure performances so that they can evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies and provide the best feedback for target areas for improvement.

Player safety is just as important improving skills.

A Hub for Baseball and Softball Excellence

ILLINOIS CONTINUES TO GROW AS A PREMIER DESTINATION FOR PLAYERS, TOURNAMENTS AND SPORTS TOURISM

Illinois has long been a heartland for America’s pastime, where baseball and softball thrive at every level, from youth leagues and travel teams to powerhouse high school programs, elite colleges and the pros.

Aside from being one of the few states to host two Major League Baseball teams, Illinois is where the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943. The Land of Lincoln was also home to the world-famous Rockford Peaches, a professional women’s baseball team that played in the AAGPBL from 1943 to 1954. In other words, baseball and softball are in Illinois’ blood.

Growing in popularity

Illinois ranks 5th in the nation for economic impact from sports tourism and baseball and softball contribute heavily to this ranking. Statistics show baseball and softball are growing in popularity across the state, fueled by a steady rise in participation and a surge of new, cuttingedge facilities that rival any in the country.

According to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), Illinois ranked fifth in the nation for girls’ high school sports participation and fourth for boys’ during the 2023–24 school year. Fast-pitch softball remains one of the most popular sports for high school girls nationwide, and with

Illinois being a leader in overall participation, this trend holds true for the state.

Collegiate summer league baseball is thriving

Illinois hosts several teams in the Prospect League, a prominent collegiate summer baseball league that has experienced substantial growth in both attendance and popularity. The league set new total and average attendance records in 2024, continuing a two-year growth trend. The Thrillville Thrillbillies, based in Marion, led the league in total attendance in 2024 with nearly 91,000 fans, the highest single-season figure

in league history. Other Illinois teams like the Danville Dans and Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp, who play in Peru, also saw increased attendance.

Top facilities are fueling growth

A prime example as to why baseball and softball are growing in popularity is the addition of a multitude of new facilities. With modern complexes drawing top national tournaments and showcasing the next generation of talent, Illinois continues to cement its place as one of the premier baseball and softball destinations in the United States.

One of the most recent entries in this category is the Wintrust Crossroads Sports Complex of New Lenox, a 100-acre complex featuring 22 youth and nine fullsized turf baseball and softball fields. It also offers 11 multipurpose turf fields, two batting cages, two auxiliary concession buildings and a playground.

As for its economic impact, officials estimate $12 million in economic development in the first year, increasing to $20 million by the third year, with the potential for over $34 million in annual economic activity and 1 million visitors per year.

Another notable opening is the $47 million 315 Sports Park in Bradley, which features 16 fully turfed fields and a championship field. This premier baseball and softball complex had a resounding opening weekend as 50 travel baseball

teams converged at the nearly 127-acre, 12-fully-turfed field complex.

The Wheatland Athletic Association in Aurora announced the start of a huge expansion project in 2025 in which it is expanding its facilities with a 14,000-square-foot indoor training center, an outdoor fully lighted turf field and a new parking lot. The facility will include eight baseball/softball cages and a dedicated workout area for WAA athletes.

The University of Illinois opened new indoor facilities for both baseball and softball in recent years, including the state-of-the-art Susan and Clint Atkins Baseball Training Center. The center is approximately 26,000 square feet and includes a large training space and a recruiting lounge. The training space encompasses an entire baseball infield with ceiling-mounted nets for hitting and pitching practice.

The new $6 million Rex and Alice A. Martin Softball Training Center at U of I provides a top-flight indoor performance and development facility for Fighting Illini softball student-athletes. The structure, measuring approximately 13,000 square feet, was constructed as an addition to the existing softball clubhouse and will include a full infield as well as hitting and pitching cages.

Opened in fall of 2025, the Scheels Sports Complex in Springfield features an indoor dome that is the largest of its kind in the world (196,625 square feet) and has

a climate-controlled environment that ensures year-round play. Among the many things that can be found inside the dome are five batting cages and two softball fields. The complex also sports eight outdoor full synthetic multi-purpose fields with lights and two championship fields. These fields are 400’ baseball fields that can be reconfigured for softball, soccer, lacrosse and more.

The recently opened Oasis Sports Complex in Marion, is a 94-acre, $40 million multi-sport complex under construction. This first-of-its-kind facility features The Integrity Dome, a climatecontrolled, multi-use indoor facility capable of hosting numerous sports, including baseball. The dome features two full-sized indoor turf fields, two convertible basketball/volleyball/pickleball courts, and a full-service restaurant and bar with sightlines to as many as 18 live games happening throughout the complex. Outdoor fields and the indoor dome opened in 2025.

From the legends of the Rockford Peaches to today’s state-of-the-art training centers and booming youth participation, Illinois proves that baseball and softball are more than just sports here, they’re part of the state’s identity. With world-class facilities, passionate fans, and a tradition that bridges generations, the Land of Lincoln isn’t just keeping pace with America’s pastime, it’s helping lead it into the future.

Baseball is Still the Classic Youth Sport of America

The sport of baseball and its variations date back to the 18th century, going from a makeshift backyard school game to maintaining some of the most profitable leagues in the world today. What about the amateur game? Kids from the age of 6 to adults in their 40s are most commonly participating in baseball on a daily basis— seasonal restrictions excluded.

When it specifically comes to youth, baseball is always right near the top of the list of most-popular sports. Whether it be T-ball, machine pitch, little league or high

school baseball, kids love to be involved at an early age. Not only does baseball allow kids to be active, but it provides an opportunity for them to learn what it is like to work together as a team and work towards a goal. However, how has America’s Pastime fared over the past decade?

Baseball is still a go-to sport.

Data collected by Project Play between 2014 and 2024 shows that baseball has dipped in youth participation. The combined average percentage of children who participated regularly in 2014 was

11.3%, while in 2024 that average fell to 10.2%. However, there are critical notes to make here. All sports witnessed a significant dip in 2020. The following year, everyone was welcoming back sports, especially baseball.

“The 2021 season at the Meijer Sports Complex [was] a complete success, proving that sports tourism [was] leading the comeback of our regional tourism economy,” said Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC). “The return of more baseball and softball tournaments, especially those

that attract travel teams, is a bellwether of more positive change to come in the sports tourism industry.”

For baseball, recovery from a similar major decline back in 2008 was steady, with the largest increase being 1.1% between 2014 and 2019 to reach 12.4%. In the next five years from 2025 to 2030, it’s only natural to expect a similar rise, should economic stability play nice. The numbers prove that baseball will make a comeback one way or another, from communities to travel teams and more, even when life gets in the way.

Tournament play is key to baseball’s success

With baseball rising from its lowest number of participants in recent years, including a 20-percent increase over the past three years in African-American communities alone—signifying a healthy ascent for diversity and inclusionism— tournament play is still what creates and sustains success for baseball planners nationwide. With players and families arriving to destinations from neighboring towns and across state lines, the sports tourism industry booms when baseball

tournaments are hosted.

“[Lubbock, Texas, has] been good the last three or four years with baseball,” said Eric Launer, sports sales manager at Visit Lubbock. “Tournaments keep getting bigger and better and it keeps expanding. The majority of the youth tournaments we run sell out. From our point-of-view, we’re looking for tournaments to bring people in from outside of town.”

Not only do baseball tournaments enhance the sports tourism industry, but tournaments improve young players across the board. Tournaments result in more games played, allowing players to consistently receive more reps, more innings played and new competition to face. Additionally, the family aspect is a factor that can’t be matched across other sports. Summer-tournament hours away from home provide kids with bonding moments and lifelong lessons from their family, coaches, peers and competition.

The sports tourism industry dominates with baseball tournaments year-round, but when it comes to the youth, the memories of the extended weekend baseball tournaments will be what is remembered for years down the road.

Baseball’s tireless efforts will lead to bigger and better outcomes

As the baseball industry grows, the outcomes will only lead to bigger and better opportunities in the future. As Minnesota’s local Fox 21 News reported, the cost of youth sports on a monthly basis is in the $700- to $1,000-dollar range. With families willing to continue to pour their money into youth sports, it only leads to a bigger budget for the sports tourism industry.

“I think [baseball] is going to continue to get bigger,” said Launer. “[Baseball] is a sport that’s always been popular and I think it’s going to continue to get more popular.”

While navigating the post-pandemic landscape of the baseball industry may be trying at times, the pivotal efforts from CVBs, sports commissions and facility operators around the country provide the best atmosphere and most luxurious playing levels. Getting volunteers, umpires and a passionate community behind the growth of baseball is what will lead to the sustained success of the sport. Baseball remains one of the hottest sports in the country, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room to grow in the upcoming years.

Good sportsmanship is on display as opposing youth teams lift their caps to one another.
