Illinois continues to grow as a premier destination for players, tournaments and sports tourism

By Jason Paha
Illinois has long been a heartland for America’s pastime, where baseball and softball thrive at every level, from youth leagues and travel teams to powerhouse high school programs, elite colleges and the pros.
Aside from being one of the few states to host two Major League Baseball teams, Illinois is where the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943. The Land of Lincoln was also home to the world-famous Rockford Peaches, a professional women’s baseball team that played in the AAGPBL from 1943 to 1954.
In other words, baseball and softball are in Illinois’ blood.

Illinois ranks 5th in the nation for economic impact from sports tourism and baseball and softball contribute heavily to this ranking. Statistics show baseball and softball are growing in popularity across the state, fueled by a steady rise in participation and a surge of new, cutting-edge facilities that rival any in the country.
According to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), Illinois ranked fifth in the nation for girls’ high school sports participation and fourth for boys’ during the 2023–24 school year. Fast-pitch softball remains one of the most popular sports for high school girls nationwide, and with Illinois being a leader in overall participation, this trend holds true for the state.
Illinois hosts several teams in the Prospect League, a prominent collegiate summer baseball league that has experienced substantial growth in both attendance and popularity. The league set new total and average attendance records in 2024, continuing a two-year growth trend. The Thrillville Thrillbillies, based in Marion, led the league in total attendance in 2024 with nearly 91,000 fans, the highest singleseason figure in league history. Other Illinois teams like the Danville Dans and Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp, who play in Peru, also saw increased attendance.
A prime example as to why baseball and softball are growing in popularity is the addition of a multitude of new facilities. With modern complexes drawing top national tournaments and showcasing the next generation of talent, Illinois continues to cement its place as one of the premier baseball and softball destinations in the United States.
One of the most recent entries in this category is the Wintrust Crossroads Sports Complex of New Lenox, a 100-acre complex featuring 22 youth and nine full-sized turf baseball and softball fields. It also offers 11 multipurpose turf fields, two batting cages, two auxiliary concession buildings and a playground.
As for its economic impact, officials estimate $12 million in economic development in the first year, increasing to $20 million by the third year, with the potential for over $34 million in annual economic activity and 1 million visitors per year.
Another notable opening is the $47 million 315 Sports Park in Bradley, which features 16 fully turfed fields and a championship field. This premier baseball and softball complex had a resounding opening weekend as 50 travel baseball teams converged at the nearly 127-acre, 12-fully-turfed field complex.
Wheatland Athletic Association in Aurora announced the start of a huge expansion project in 2025 in which it is expanding its facilities with a 14,000-square-foot indoor training center, an outdoor fully lighted turf field and a new parking lot. The facility will include eight baseball/softball cages and a dedicated workout area for WAA athletes.
The University of Illinois opened new indoor facilities for both baseball and softball in recent years, including the state-of-the-art Susan and Clint Atkins Baseball Training Center. The center is approximately 26,000 square feet and includes a large training space and a recruiting lounge. The training space encompasses an entire baseball infield with ceiling-mounted nets for hitting and pitching practice.
The new $6 million Rex and Alice A. Martin Softball Training Center at U of I provides a top-flight indoor performance and development facility for Fighting Illini softball student-athletes. The structure, measuring approximately 13,000 square feet, was constructed as an addition to the existing softball clubhouse and will include a full infield as well as hitting and pitching cages.
Opened in fall of 2025, the Scheels Sports Complex in Springfield features an indoor dome that is the largest of its kind in the world (196,625 square feet) and has a climatecontrolled environment that ensures year-round play. Among the many things that can be found inside the dome are five batting cages and two softball fields. The complex also sports eight outdoor full synthetic multi-purpose fields with lights and two championship fields. These fields are 400’ baseball fields that can be reconfigured for softball, soccer, lacrosse and more.
The recently opened Oasis Sports Complex in Marion, is a 94-acre, $40 million multi-sport complex under construction.
This first-of-its-kind facility features The Integrity Dome, a climate-controlled, multi-use indoor facility capable of hosting numerous sports, including baseball. The dome features two full-sized indoor turf fields, two convertible basketball/ volleyball/pickleball courts, and a full-service restaurant and bar with sightlines to as many as 18 live games happening throughout the complex. Outdoor fields and the indoor dome opened in 2025.
From the legends of the Rockford Peaches to today’s stateof-the-art training centers and booming youth participation, Illinois proves that baseball and softball are more than just sports here, they’re part of the state’s identity. With worldclass facilities, passionate fans, and a tradition that bridges generations, the Land of Lincoln isn’t just keeping pace with America’s pastime, it’s helping lead it into the future.
The Land of Lincoln’s stretch of the Mother Road readies for a surge of travelers eager to relive America’s most iconic highway in 2026
By Randy Mink

Though it was replaced as a major thoroughfare by superhighways decades ago, Route 66 continues to captivate nostalgia buffs, conjuring up images of mom-and-pop diners, cozy motels and kitschy roadside attractions. Communities along Illinois’ 300 miles of the historic ribbon of asphalt are polishing up their signage and attractions as they prepare for an onslaught of road trippers expected during Route 66’s centennial in 2026.
Commissioned in 1926, the linear corridor, nicknamed the “Mother Road” and “Main Street of America,” stretched some 2,400 miles from Chicago to California, A pop culture icon immortalized in literature, music, TV shows and movies, Route 66 symbolized freedom of the road for generations of travelers in the mid-20th century.
From the Chicago area, cruise down Interstate 55 to Pontiac, a stop on old Route 66, and arrive at the free-admission Pontiac Museum Complex. Inside the former city hall building are the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum, and the exhibit Life in the 1940s: A Traveling Tribute to the Greatest Generation and Livingston County War Museum, a treasure chest of military uniforms, photos and artifacts representing conflicts from World War I to Afghanistan. The huge Route 66 shield mural on the building’s exterior makes a good photo op. If time allows, check out the free Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum, a shiny showroom displaying vintage Pontiac- and Oakland-brand cars.
Enjoy lunch at Edinger’s Filling Station, a restaurant themed around Pontiac’s Route 66 heritage. Or take the group to the Old Log Cabin, a historic eatery dating back to the early days of Route 66.
The place of pilgrimage for Route 66 fans in BloomingtonNormal is Ryburn Place. Formerly Sprague’s Super Service, the 1931 Tudor-Revival landmark survives as the largest of the few remaining two-story gas stations left on the old thoroughfare; the owner’s family and an attendant lived upstairs. The restored building functions today as a gift shop/information center.

The town of Atlanta, Illinois last year welcomed the American Giants Museum, which chronicles the story of the 20-foot-tall Muffler Man statues once used as advertising characters by automotive and other highway businesses. Several of these towering fiberglass figures stand outside the museum, a replica of a 1960s Texaco gas station. The town’s landmark for many years has been the Bunyon Giant, a 19-foot man holding a hot dog.
The town of Lincoln hosts several photoworthy Route 66 attractions, including Railsplitter Covered Wagon, the largest covered wagon in the world. Sitting in the driver’s seat is a statue of Abraham Lincoln as he
might have appeared when traveling around the state as a circuit lawyer.
In Springfield, the Illinois State Fairgrounds Route 66 Experience is an outdoor walkthrough exhibit with little red sheds highlighting businesses and attractions, past and present, in 92 Illinois communities. The garden courtyard brims with replicas of billboards and neon signs that once advertised motels, a drive-in movie theater and other places along the fabled roadway. Illuminated at night, the signs cast a magical glow.

The Springfield area’s new Route 66 Mural Trail provides plenty of photo ops. In 2024, 12 wayside exhibits were installed in and around Springfield, and some have audio stories.
For lunch in Springfield, stop at Cozy Dog Drive In, famous for its cornmeal-battered hot dog on a stick and loaded with Route 66 lore. Or eat at Motorheads Bar, Grill & Museum, a Route 66-themed eatery filled with car-culture nostalgia.
In Livingston, a giant pink elephant visible from I-55, plus other larger-than-life sculptures, beckons wayfarers to Pink Elephant Antique Mall, housed in a former high school. Next door is the 1950s-style Twistee Treat Diner, whose whimsical ice cream cone-shaped building whets your appetite for burgers, fries and fountain creations.
Collinsville is home to the restored Brooks Catsup Bottle Water Tower, the world’s largest catsup bottle. A great photo op a bit off 66, the quirky, 170-foot-tall tower was built in 1949 to supply water to the catsup plant. It is roadside Americana at its finest.
West End Service Station in Edwardsville, which served Route 66 motorists for nearly four decades, was recently transformed into a visitor information center with attractive displays on the road’s lore. In nearby Granite City, the past comes to life at It’s Electric Neon Sign Park, where restored neon signs from local businesses, plus large murals, celebrate the town’s place on America’s Mother Road. The signs are turned on from dusk to dawn.

At the Mississippi River in Madison, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge was built in 1929 as part of Route 66. Featuring a 30-degree turn midway across, the one-mile span today serves as one of the world’s longest bicycle and pedestrian bridges.
From Illinois, Route 66 continued west across Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before reaching Southern California. Encompassing the road’s easternmost leg and some of its most colorful sights, Illinois is truly the place for kicks on 66, especially in 2026.
