No Room to Spare: Closure of Maria Hall Causes Housing Strain

AfteranoutbreakofmoldinMariaHallcauseda closureofthebuilding,studentsweredisplaced andmovedintotheadditionalresidencehalls acrosscampus.

Theclosurehassparkedfrustrationamongst students,withmanydormsfeelingovercrowded thisSpring.MariaHallisoneoffourresidencehalls oncampus,andhousesover200students.The closurehasimpactedbothformerresidentsof MariaHallandresidentsacrosscampusinthe otherdormitories.

Many students feel this closure has negatively impacted campus life, with many saying they feel their dorms are overcrowded.

I definitely think it is overcrowded.

Now I moved into a room that already had two other people.

I do commute here, but I do know a couple teammates and friends who are impacted by the Maria Hall closure.

Themajorityoftheinvestmentispromisedto therenovationofMariaHall,withtheintentions offullymodernizingthefacility“forlong-term healthandcomfort.“

Cornacchiawritesthatthereissignificant workunderwaytoremoveceilings,replacepiping, andtoinstallnewHVACsystems.

Thecampuswasfacedwithadifficultdecision: allowstudentstoliveinMariaHallandfeelthe discomfortoflivinginanactiveconstructionzone foralongperiodoftime,orclosingthebuilding offentirelysoconstructioncouldproceedquickly andeffectively.

InareleasedstatementpostedtoGeorgian Court’swebsite,theuniversitysaidthefollowing: “Construction crews are removing ceilings, replacing outdated piping, and installing new HVAC systems. By fall 2026, Maria Hall will feature new windows, flooring, mechanical systems, and upgraded infrastructure throughout.”

Constructionwillcontinuethroughoutthe summerandMariaHallhasplanstoreopenfor thefall2026semester.
