Television specials this summer celebrate trailblazers Linda Ronstadt: Live in Hollywood In 1980, Linda Ronstadt recorded a concert for an acclaimed HBO special that was considered by many fans to be a high point in her career and captured America’s most popular female rock singer at the peak of her reign. Thursday, June 4, at 7 pm The Kinks—Echoes of the World The Kinks’ 1968 album “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society” failed to chart on release but it went on to become an influential work in rock. Now, more than 50 years later, we take a closer look at the album’s creation. Friday, June 5, at 9:30 pm Julia Child: Best Bites Celebrate the first lady of cooking! Martha Stewart, Jacques Pépin, Vivian Howard, Marcus Samuelsson, José Andrés, Éric Ripert, Rick Bayless, and more of your favorite chefs are sharing personal insights as they screen Julia’s most-beloved episodes. Saturday, June 6, at 12:30 pm The Music Makers of Gennett Records This is the story of the little studio in Indiana that captured early recordings of Jazz Age music legends Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, and the singing cowboy Gene Autry. Friday, June 12, at 8 pm Prehistoric Road Trip Host Emily Graslie hits the road to explore 2.5 billion years of history in the Dakotas, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Each of the three weekly episodes examines different eras in time focusing on the geology, ecology, and environment. Premieres Wednesday, June 17, at 9 pm
American Masters Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am Author of 11 novels and recipient of many prestigious awards, Toni Morrison stunned her peers, critics, and colleagues with her work’s explorations of race, history, America, and the human condition. Tuesday, June 23, at 7 pm Great Performances Gloria: A Life Experience a unique interpretation of feminist icon Gloria Steinem’s life told by an all-female cast starring Emmy Awardwinner Christine Lahti and directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus. Friday, June 26, at 8 pm POV And She Could Be Next The award-winning POV series is the longest-running showcase on television to feature the work of America’s best contemporary-issue independent filmmakers. This two-part film features trailblazing women of color in politics. June 29 and 30, at 8 pm American Experience The Vote This new four-hour, two-part documentary series tells the dramatic story of the epic—and surprisingly unfamiliar—crusade waged by American women for the right to vote. July 6 and 7, at 8 pm American Masters Unladylike2020 This multimedia series consisting of a one-hour television special and 26 digital short films features courageous, little-known, and diverse female trailblazers of the 20th century. Host Tom Brosseau shared the debut hour with some of his dear friends—Oscar-nominated actor John C. Reilly, viral food columnist Marilyn Hagerty, artist Penni Emrich Burkum, and musicians Tom Lennon and Heidi Gluck. This team effort is produced/ edited by Prairie Public’s Erik Deatherage, announced by Joe Wiegand, and supported by Hugo’s Family Marketplace in Grand Forks, ND. Did you miss the debut show? Honor your Pop on Father’s Day You can record an interview and add it to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress’ archive. StoryCorps Connect is a new platform that is meant to bring people together during times of physical separation and loneliness, particularly for vulnerable parts of the population—using videoconferencing software! Document your loved ones’ stories, and your own, at storycorps.org, and listen for StoryCorps vignettes sprinkled throughout the radio schedule.
