Radio Schedule You betcha: new radio documentary about “Fargo” airs in June Listen for these important radio reports Chasing the Dream: Poverty & Opportunity in America is a multi-platform public media initiative that aims to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of poverty on American society: what life is like below the poverty line, its impact on our economic security and on our children, and what has happened to our age-old dream of striving for a better life. The project will also highlight solutions: what has worked— and what is working to bring people out of poverty—and what lessons we can and must learn for the future. You’ll hear the Chasing the Dream radio reports throughout the month, or you can listen online at prairiepublic.org. A website at pbs.org/wnet/chasing-the-dream/ about hosts stories from other public media stations. The initiative will also include a signature nationally distributed one-hour television documentary of the same name, airing on Prairie Public in July, that will focus on one or more of the promises, pitfalls, and/or paradoxes in the search for the American dream and in-depth reporting on the ongoing economic challenges of Atlantic City as it struggles with the implosion of its casino industry and the loss of more than 8,000 jobs. Love it or hate it, the 1996 movie “Fargo” has made an impression on the region. In the words of the film’s blundering protagonist, Jerry Lundegaard: “Yer darn tootin’!”
To better understand how “Fargo” has helped shaped North Dakota and Minnesota, and how it has shaped other regions’ perceptions of us, radio producers Diane Richard and Todd Melby have produced an hour-long radio documentary exploring all things “Fargo.” Titled We Don’t Talk Like That: Fargo and the Midwest Psyche, it airs on Prairie Public on Friday, June 10, at 7 pm and Sunday, June 26, at 5 pm CT. Timed for the film’s 20th anniversary, the documentary contains interviews with talent who worked on “Fargo” and recollections from a wide assortment of actors. You’ll also hear how some Minnesota women in law enforcement saw Frances McDormand’s character, Police Chief Marge Gunderson, as a “pregnant super hero” and from local folks with strong opinions about the movie’s lasting impact. If you’re a “Fargo” fan, this radio documentary’s for you.
