The holidays wouldn’t be complete without a new Call the Midwife Holiday Special 2021 with the nurses, midwives, and nuns of Nonnatus House and the expectant mothers of Poplar. Saturday, December 25 at 8 pm In Their Own Words follows Angela Merkel’s meteoric rise from pastor’s daughter to Time Person of the Year to first female Chancellor of Germany. Tuesday, December 28 at 7 pm Get ready to set sail in the hot air balloon with Phileas Fogg, Passepartout, and Fix in a brand-new adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel Around the World in 80 Days on Masterpiece, starring David Tennant. Sundays at 7 pm beginning January 2 A student of Sigmund Freud and an Austrian detective team up to solve mysteries in early 1900s Vienna. Vienna Blood is back with a second season of fascinating cases ripe for a Freudian approach. Education & Outreach A Model for Youth Media Prairie Public values media literacy
Prairie Public’s Youth Media initiative empowers and elevates youth voices and promotes media literacy and creation in classrooms. Our goal is to build communities grounded in thoughtful local reporting and responsible media consumption, and to encourage student journalists who can contribute to public conversations about the issues that matter to them. A high school peer mentoring group at Standing Rock Community School hosted a free book fair for younger students as part of Literacy Day, distributing and reading books supplied by Prairie Public.
Student journalists documented Literacy Day at Standing Rock Community School—with Prairie Public staff coaching these youth media creators to operate professional camera and audio equipment.
Prairie Public’s Tim Wollenzien presented Mandan High School’s Lucia Shelley, PhD, with a Spark Grant Award to purchase video cameras so her students can create documentaries.

We thank you year ‘round The months seem to fly by, and another year has come and gone. This is the time of year when we look back at what we’ve accomplished in the past twelve months—the places we’ve visited, the people we’ve met, and the new things we’ve discovered. We learned so much! We’ve paused and examined our impact. We haven’t avoided what’s difficult or unfamiliar. We took an honest look at how we approach diversity, equity, and inclusion. We evaluated the complicated ecosystem that is modern media, and I feel confident that we do, and will continue to, respond with quality and integrity. 2021 has been challenging and rewarding. Our priorities? To keep you informed through sensitive and historic events and issues, and to fill the educational gap for children as they— and their families—transitioned to at-home learning. We take our responsibility seriously, but the year wasn’t all serious. Prairie Public is also your dependable and colorful friend when you’re looking for entertainment and relaxation. This year, our staff became even more adept at using technology to host events and hold meetings. We hosted an online premiere of Èsta Es Mi Casa–This Is My Home, an online 40th anniversary party for Prairie Public’s radio service, an Elenor Wonders Why Appy Hour for children and their parents, and numerous Facebook Watch Parties. We wore our masks and kept a safe distance at in-person events at Medora, Sleepy Hollow Theatre and Arts Park, Trollwood Performing Arts School, and others.
Over the years, the faces have changed and technology continues to evolve, but our commitment has stayed the same. We continue to be an essential community resource—your trusted neighbor. So as we wrap up another successful year, we’re looking toward 2022. The upcoming calendar is already filled with exciting new projects and opportunities. Stay tuned! As we celebrate a new year, on behalf of the board and staff, I thank you for your confidence in us and for your advocacy. We wish you a happy and hearty 2022. P.S.
