A program guide for members of Prairie Public Broadcasting August 2012
all aboard! Travel through America’s railroad history with Grammy-winning musician and storyteller David Holt. He’ll entertain us with the remarkable history of scenic tourist railroads— from the luxurious trains that served up spectacular meals and breathtaking views, to the fastpaced trains that attracted travelers seeking glitz and glamour. More than just a television tour, these stories capture railroads as they defined the spirit of North America, creating a new industry and rewriting transportation history. Trains Around North America airs Tuesday, August 14, at 8:00 p.m. (CT).

Where grown-ups keep growing We’re in the midst of an age boom and with it, an amazing transition. In general, those of us over the age of 50 are expected to live longer than any previous generation. We’re in the process of creating a new life stage that lies somewhere between young adulthood and “old-old” adulthood. This stage doesn’t have a name. We call it Adult Part 2. Enter Next Avenue. It’s brought to you by a group of public television stations, including Prairie Public, that recognize we could all use reliable information to help us figure out what’s, well, next. Next Avenue will deliver that—in a way that’s both smart and accessible. The project has already debuted a web site that publishes articles and blog posts from top experts and leading journalists about health, finance, work, learning, caregiving, and the latest news of interest to the Adult Part 2 generation. Find it at nextavenue.org.

What is the state of environmentalism in the polluted country, and how much hold does Confucius’ philosophy have over the country and its politicians? Listen for the discussions, which were recorded with live audiences from cafes and bars in two of the most exciting cities in the world, as Why? Goes to China! Listen for the shows in the Hear It Now time slot in August.

Art In The TwentyFirst Century is the only primetime national television series to focus exclusively on contemporary art and artists. The episode themes in August explore Boundaries (August 2), History (August 9) and Balance (August 23) all at 9:00 p.m. (CT). Art21 serves educators and their students by providing free materials and programs, including educators’ guides—all at Art21.org. There, you’ll also find the Art21 Blog, which chronicles the art landscape—from indexing daily events and activities to posing broader,
meditative questions about the place of art in our world. Also at Art21.org, you’ll find an extensive archive of all of the films and educational materials it produces, including original footage, transcribed interviews, research materials, educational publications, web pages, books, and artwork reproductions. The archive also includes film documentation of Art21’s education and public programs, including hundreds of hours of video by “Art21 Educators” participants.

Public media offers gavel-to-gavel coverage of the 2012 National Political Conventions Expanded online coverage provides an “all-access pass” to the GOP and Democratic conventions Long known for providing the most complete coverage of the national political conventions, PBS, NPR, and Prairie Public are going to even greater lengths to give us a first-hand look at the 2012 party conventions. On television, political journalists Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill (pictured) will coanchor gavel-to-gavel broadcast coverage at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida (August 27–30), and from the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina (September 4–5), as well as the Bank of America Stadium (September 6). Television’s special broadcast coverage will begin at 7:00 p.m. (CT) each night of the conventions and continue LIVE until the conclusion of the proceedings at approximately 10:00 p.m. (CT). On radio, Prairie Public’s news team and NPR will report daily during news programming about all the proceedings. Radio’s emphasis on exploring issues indepth and connecting with real voters extends to npr.org where the coverage and analysis continues around the clock.
