HAY DAY: MUSICAL BARNS OF NORTH DAKOTA
pays tuneful tribute to the barn, a rapidly disappearing icon of our Midwestern landscape and agricultural heritage. The 60-minute documentary explores the architecture, history, preservation, restoration, and current uses of seven barns, accompanied by barn dance music from The Radio Stars, Rhythms of the Heart, Tigirlily, The Hay Shakers, and more. The documentary project has also grown to include a music CD and a beautiful coffee table book produced by Preservation North Dakota. Tune in Tuesday, June 2, at 7 pm CT for the television premiere of this new Prairie Public documentary. Production funding for Hay Day: Musical Barns of North Dakota provided in part by Gate City Bank, BNSF Railway, North Dakota Farmers Union, State Historical Society of North Dakota, and by the members of Prairie Public.

Register now for the 2015 Teacher Training Institute PreK-12 teachers may receive graduate credit for attending a two-day teacher training institute being offered in June by Prairie Public Broadcasting. The Prairie Region Teacher Training Institute will focus on strengthening the preK-12 arts, history, and culture curriculum through the innovative use of strong video and other technologies, placing emphasis on crosscurricular applications. Teachers may also receive a $100 stipend for attending the Institute, then writing and submitting an approved, media-rich lesson plan integrating regional arts, history and/or culture into a cross-curricular lesson. The Institute is scheduled for June 23 and 24, 2015, at Concordia College in Moorhead. Information and registration is at prairiepublic.org/education. Prairie Public is hosting the Institute in partnership with The Energy and Environmental Research Center’s The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership project, the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and the North Central Council for School Television.

Interested in good storytelling? Bill Thomas, Prairie Public’s director of radio, will talk about how stories shape our lives at Prairie Village Bill Thomas Museum as part of the museum’s Prairie Talks series. Also speaking that day is Lorraine Davis, founder of the Native American Development Center. The event is in Rugby on Sunday, June 14, at 2 pm., it is free, and all are welcome. Thomas and Davis are also collaborating on a radio project that’s collecting narratives from people in the Bismarck area—scheduled to air on Prairie Public later in the year.

Congratulations to all the young writers Jello, walruses and sea lions, astronomy, and best friends were the subjects of the regional stories that have advanced to the national level in the 2015 PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Prairie Public received more than 275 creative entries, and all the children who submitted stories received certificates of participation and personalized, positive feedback from contest evaluators. The top 12 national finalists will be announced in July, and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.
