Spend an afternoon with Mozart’s comic masterpiece Tune in Sunday, January 18, at 12:30 pm Mozart’s elegant tale of marital discord, Le Nozze di Figaro, is the season premiere of Great Performances at the Met. The opera is set in a stately manor in 1930s Seville, where the romantic bonds of two couples are tested over the course of one eventful day. Ildar Abdrazakov, star of Prince Igor, sings the title role. The cast also includes Marlis Petersen as Figaro’s quick-witted bride-to-be, Peter Mattei in one of his most acclaimed roles as Count Almaviva, Amanda Majeski in her Met debut as Almaviva’s long-suffering wife, and Isabel Leonard as the boisterous page Cherubino.

The Manners of Downton Abbey Tune in Sunday, January 4, at 9 pm CT
Hovering just off camera on the set of Downton Abbey is the man who watches the actors’ every move. The director? No, it’s the historical advisor, Alastair Bruce, guaranteeing that the behavior above and below stairs is true to the period. The Manners of Downton Abbey is divided into five enlightening sections— How to Eat, How to Marry, How to Behave, How to Dress, and How to Make Money. The program includes many memorable moments from the series and comments from the actors about how key scenes were filmed. For example, Hugh Bonneville recounts that in one emotional scene during season 3, he felt the story called for him to embrace Matthew Crawley (played
by Dan Stevens). “But Alastair said, ‘Don’t be ridiculous! You might just shake his hand—just.’” Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, says, “I’ve sometimes said to Alastair, ‘Can I lean back in my chair just a little bit’, and he said, ‘Absolutely not— never in front of your grandmother!’” On the subject of ladies’ proper attire, Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, points out a crucial detail from season 4 that probably escaped many viewers’ notice. “When Edith goes to have dinner at (Michael) Gregson’s flat, she’s not wearing gloves, which was very shocking. She was practically naked!”
