D
uring the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the Nor th Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, the South Vietnamese resist ance crumbled. The United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in t he country. With a communist victory inevitable and the U.S. readying to withdraw, many Americans on the ground worried their South Vietnamese allies and friends faced imprisonment or death at the hands of the approaching Nor th Vietnamese. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number of heroic Americans took matters into their own hands, engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations in a desperate effort to save as many South Vietnamese as possible.
April 29, 1975. Desperate South Vietnamese clamber aboard barges in the port of Saigon in an attempt to escape advancing North Vietnamese troops on the day of the Fall of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War.

New from BURN Retired engineer Louis Michaud believes a tornado machine could solve the world’s energy problems. NYU philosopher Matthew Liao has an outside-thebox proposal: decrease energy use by engineering humans to have meat allergies, fur, and yes, cat eyes. A new one-hour special from BURN will celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by exploring these ideas and people from all walks of life who are creatively working to counteract energy crises. The special, titled “The Adaptors” introduces farmers and coastaldwellers finding new ways to work and live, scientists thinking outside the box about energy, corporate leaders bringing new technologies to market, and garage tinkerers and DIY inventors dreaming up the next big thing in green living. NPR Generation Listen has launched a social media campaign around the concept of listening: listening as it relates to radio, but also listening more broadly as a way to connect with other people and the world around us. The goal of the campaign is to engage current NPR listeners and fans as ambassadors, and intrigue non-listeners about public radio. Every week, Generation Listen will dedicate one day—Wednesday—for online communities to share #WhyListen stories as a way to encourage others to make LISTENING an active verb. Colonies are useful for predators, too. Social spiders in Ecuador work together to capture prey 20 times the size an individual might subdue on its own. For others, communal living provides multi-generational care-giving options or the opportunity to build enormous cities like the acre-wide multi-million-citizen colonies built by leaf cutter ants in Costa Rica. Individual homes have their advantages. All over the world, birds in the wild arrive at
diverse nesting grounds to collect, compete for, reject, steal, and build with carefully selected materials, crafting homes for protecting their eggs and raising their young. Of course, finding a good base of operations is key to successfully raising a family. One must find the right stream or tree, the right building materials, neighbors, and sometimes tenants. In the wild, every home is a unique DIY project, every head of household a designer and engineer.
