Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers Featuring Edie Brickell in Concert Saturday, March 1, 8:30 pm CT Comedy legend Steve Martin is now in the fifth decade of a varied and accomplished career as a comic, actor, author and playwright—but he is also a Grammy-winning bluegrass banjoist and songwriter. Great Performances turns the spotlight on Martin’s musical side with a concert performance of his new collaboration with Edie Brickell, who initially burst onto the national scene in the late ’80s fronting the New Bohemians. Although these new musical partners have already built respected individual bodies of work, their inaugural effort is a charming departure, as well as a creative milestone.

Prairie Public has always been “about” community, and community effort and support has made it possible all these years. WDAY-TV (the NBC affiliate at the time) helped with a fundraising telethon before Prairie Public went on the air in 1964. “A big break came when WDAY announced that it would make its former tower and studio building available to KFME,” according to TV Times newspaper supplement editor Diane Schmitz. Fargo Forum staff writer Jerry Ruff reported two years later that WDAY was charging KFME one dollar a year in rent. A $65,000 grant from National Educational Television made the purchase of the latest technology possible—a videotape recorder. Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M) donated $10,000 worth of videotape. TV Times announced the imminent arrival of North Dakota’s first educational television station with the
lead-in, “Do commercials bug you? If you’ve longed to—just once—watch your favorite TV program without the necessary interruption of commercials, and if you live within 55 miles of Fargo, a dream could be coming true for you starting Sunday ... Now, don’t everyone panic at the word ‘educational.’ True, one of the station’s prime functions will be to provide televised material that can be used in classrooms in our area. But an equally large segment of its programming will be devoted to entertainment. Entertainment with a purpose, to be sure: it will encourage the viewer to use his mind as well as his eyes.” Stay tuned for more bits of history throughout this year as we celebrate 50 years of television that entertains, but also educates, informs, and inspires.
