What’s that old doodad worth? Antiques Roadshow is coming to Bismarck, ND, and NOW is the time to apply for tickets! Ticket recipients are selected by random drawing. Each ticket holder may bring two objects for appraisal. The deadline for ticket applications is Monday, April 7, 2014. In addition, the Roadshow Furniture Roundup is seeking large pieces of furniture located within a 50 mile-radius of Bismarck to be included in the event. If your furniture is selected you’ll get two tickets to the show, and your furniture will be transported to the event and back at no cost to you. A new local production from Prairie Public, 6 Brothers, explores the joys and challenges of life on the plains through the stories of the Stenberg brothers. Arnold, Casper, Christian, Henry, Raymond, and Selmer were the children of western North Dakota homesteaders, and they belonged to the generation that survived the Great Depression and experienced World War II. The people of the prairie region were introduced to public television 50 years ago—in January 1964. In that same month, President Lyndon Johnson declared the “war on poverty”; the City of New York unveiled plans to build the World Trade Center “twin towers of 110 stories”; the Federal Trade Commission proposed “compulsory branding of every cigarette pack with a danger warning”; a Presidential commission proposed lowering the voting age to 18; and astronaut John Glenn surprised the nation by running for the U.S. Senate. Television provided entertainment, and not much else. The top rated television shows were “Gunsmoke,” “Wagon Train,” and “Beverly Hillbillies.” Federal Communications Commission Chairman Newton Minnow remarked “I invite you to sit down in front of your television set ... and stay there without
a magazine, newspaper, or book to distract you ... I can assure you that ou will observe a vast wasteland.” Architect rank Lloyd Wright alled television chewing gum for he eyes.” Educational elevision’s time ad come. The dream of a few isionaries became reality through etermination, ion, and growing support from schools, universities, corporations, government, the public, and even from one of the local commercial stations. It continues to thrive because of continued maintenance from those same supporters.
