What’s that old doodad worth? Antiques Roadshow is coming to Bismarck, ND, and NOW is the time to apply for tickets! Ticket recipients are selected by random drawing. Each ticket holder may bring two objects for appraisal. The deadline for ticket applications is Monday, April 7, 2014. In addition, the Roadshow Furniture Roundup is seeking large pieces of furniture located within a 50 mile radius of Bismarck to be included in the event. If your furniture is selected, you’ll get two tickets to the show, and your furniture will be transported to the event and back at no cost to you. Radio Features Farewell Carl Kasell After waking up (well) before dawn for 30 years and flying every week to Chicago for the past 15, Carl Kasell is ready for some serious R&R and has announced he’s stepping down this spring after a five-decade career in broadcasting. Carl will record his final broadcast for Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! this spring. Carl’s relationship with public radio audiences dates back to his 30 years as the serious and stable newscaster for NPR’s Morning Edition. In 1998 he was recruited to provide gravitas to NPR’s new newsquiz, where his title, Official Judge and Scorekeeper, belied his key role as the show’s straight man. A lesson in excellence: Doug Hamilton is helping students transform their understanding of news A group of North Dakota students is reporting, problem-solving, synthesizing information, and investigating important topics—using journalism as a form of learning—with the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Lab. The students from Turtle Mountain Community High School are producing student-generated news video reports with mentoring from Prairie Public’s Main Street host Doug Hamilton, and with guidance from their chemistry and forensic teacher Renee Aalund. The project includes a news literacy/ digital media curriculum and online collaborative space designed to build a foundation of civic engagement, and spark a life-long interest in current events. In the ‘olden days,’ Prairie Public hosted televised auctions—a strategy that worked well in its time. Regional celebrities volunteered as on-air auctioneers to help raise funds for the fledgling television station. Pictured above is North Dakota U.S. Senator Quentin Burdick, with Miss Fargo as his assistant, taking bids on a case of motor oil, a Sunmark transistor portable phonograph valued at $25, and a television set. The “Electric Country Auction” photo (on the right) demonstrates the
times, with hairstyles reminiscent of the ’70s and a sign that indicates that Prairie Public was still growing and was identified in those days as “Channel 13.” Signs behind the announcer show that Sigma Nu fraternity was donating four hours of labor to the highest bidder at a value of $5.
