For many, the allimportant bonds they share as a couple are what enable the next generation to survive. Can we call these bonds love? In this delightful, provocative look at the love life of animals, watch the feminine wiles of a young gorilla, the search for Mr. Right among a thousand flamingos, the open “marriages� of blue-footed boobies, the soap opera arrangements of gibbons, and all the subtle, outrageous, romantic antics that go into finding a partner. Celebrate Literacy! Prairie Public is offering grants to fund family literacy events. Teachers, principals, librarians, and school staff in Prairie Public’s broadcast area may apply for the funding. Applications are available at prairiepublic.org, and the submission deadline is December 15, 2013. Communities awarded grants receive a $500 cash stipend; the rental of a PBS character; a new book for each child; a free staff workshop; event promotion on Prairie Public’s television and radio networks; stepby-step instructions for organizing the event; and planning support, literacy activities, literacy materials, and balloons.

Prairie Public’s David Smith was nominated for a Broadcaster of the Year Award at the 2013 International Bluegrass Music Awards. Smith hosts radio’s Red River Ramble Bluegrass Show Saturdays at 4 p.m. (CT) (available in Grand Forks and Williston and everywhere via online). The Awards Show was the centerpiece of World of Bluegrass Week, September 24-28 in Raleigh, NC.
Monday, November 4, we’ll talk about “Oddly Beautiful,” a book inspired by a husband’s struggle with Alzheimers. Tune in Wednesday, November 6, as popular ag broadcaster and columnist Al Gustin starts off today’s show. He’s compiled a collection of his work in book form, “Al Gustin’s Farm Byline, Reflections on North Dakota Agriculture, 1974-2013.” Listen in November during Main Street for selected readings from the groundbreaking book that celebrates our region’s proud and rich folk heritage. “Sundogs and Sunflowers: Folklore and Folk Art of the Northern Great Plains” is a national awardwinning publication written and edited by Timothy J. Kloberdanz and Troyd A. Geist, and produced by the North Dakota Council on the Arts. Radio readings are produced in partnership with Prairie Public.
Thanksgiving with Mike and Alice We asked, and he said ‘yes’! Tune in Thursday, November 28, to celebrate a classic with Mike Olson, host of Into the Music (available over the air in the eastern part of the state and everywhere via online). He’ll play “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” a musical monologue by singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie, who says the song was based on an incident in his life that began on Thanksgiving Day.

It also reevaluates Kennedy’s strengths and weaknesses in the Oval Office as he navigated some of the
most explosive events of the mid-20th century—the disastrous failure at the Bay of Pigs, the urgent demands of an increasingly impatient civil rights movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the escalating conflict in Southeast Asia.
