A thrilling drama of passion, power, and honor
Four extraordinary singers star in an early Verdi gem as Great Performances at the Met presents Ernani on Sunday, July 29, at 1:30 p.m. (CT). Based on Victor Hugo’s revolutionary play, Ernani follows the fates of three men—two noble and one a bandit—who attempt to outmaneuver one another for the hand of the beautiful Elvira. Pier Luigi Samaratini’s colorful production is conducted by Marco Armiliato and features Marcello Giordani in the title role. Angela Meade takes center stage as Elvira, with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Ferruccio Furlanetto rounding out the cast.

New host, fresh music For more than 30 years, Marian McPartland has welcomed the biggest names in jazz to her public radio series, Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, where she and guests reminisce and perform jazz standards as well as off-the-wall improvisations. Now 92, McPartland has invited pianist Jon Weber to succeed her as host of Piano Jazz Rising Stars, 13 one-hour programs that feature the leading young performers on the scene today. Tune in at 9:00 p.m. (CT) on Fridays, beginning July 6.

Tune in July 4 at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. for a special “Politics Takes a Holiday” broadcast from The Capitol Steps! The comedy troupe began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“don’t quit your day job!”), and they’ve become a public radio tradition. We’ll investigate rock’s Holy Grail: the long-lost electric Fender Stratocaster Bob Dylan plugged in at the ’65 Newport Folk Festival, changing rock ‘n’ roll forever. We’ll also track down some Beatles autographs and unearth a little-known artistic side of musical iconoclast Frank Zappa. Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. (CT) beginning July 17 As public television’s premier public affairs series, Frontline’s stature is reaffirmed each week through documentaries that cover the scope and complexity of the human, social, and political experience. For instance, on July 3, Frontline explores how an “epidemic of greed” spread from financial institutions in the United States to Europe and back as correspondent Martin Smith examines Money, Power and Wall Street.
