When it comes to food, don’t knock it ’til you try it (and try it and try it again). By Deanna Hardies Colorado Daily Editor

emember that weird kid in high school who said something so profoundly stupid the first time you met, you backed away slowly and avoided them like the “Cats” trailer? Food can be like that, too. The first time I ever bit into a mango, my taste buds were assaulted with a flavor so harsh and floral, it felt like I was chomping on a bar of deodorant. That was the day mango joined what I dubbed the “Axis of Evil”: my list of personally offensive foods that must never be ingested again. One of the problems of having such a list is that you inevitably find someone who loves one of those foods and will loudly proselytize on its behalf if you reveal your heresy. Mango lovers came

out of the woodwork to tell me how it was the greatest Hardies fruit known to man and only the soulless could disagree. They demanded I open my heart and mouth to the magic of mango. There’s nothing like someone telling you you’re wrong to make you dig your heels in. I stopped telling all but my closest confidants about my Axis of Evil, and eventually, the mango lovers left me alone. But after a while, when there weren’t any fanatics getting in my face about it anymore, a flicker of doubt crept in. I started to wonder if maybe I was wrong. Fellas, let me tell you: I was so wrong. The first mango I tried
just wasn’t ripe yet. The second mango I tried was filled with the nectar of the gods. Turns out the weird kid was actually very cool once I got to know them. Best friend material, even. I started on a quest to investigate other foods I’d given the cold shoulder and had similar results. My Axis of Evil shrank to a single offender. First impressions can be deceiving, which is why second and third chances are important. But you know what James Bond and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” author Ian Fleming says: “Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.” Sometimes, the asshole you pegged from the first minute is still an asshole the next day and the next month. For me, that asshole is cilantro. No matter how many chances I’ve given it, it always tastes like something that
grew on the Elephant’s Foot in Chernobyl. If your asshole food involves celiac disease or an allergy, you probably shouldn’t give it a first chance, let alone a second. But look, you’re in college now. I’m not gonna tell you what to do, because I know from experience how close spite is to stubbornness. But this is a special chunk of life when you get to learn strange, new things about yourself. Or you can stick to your uninformed limits and pretend only weirdos like mango. oulder, like many cities that consider themselves “hip” and “with it,” is all about that food truck life. And as someone who frequently gets booted out of fancy restaurants for the whole “no shirt, no shoes” rule, I find them a nice change of pace in the dining scene. Last year, we covered how you can find food trucks, whether it be at local breweries or the Rayback Collective food truck park or the various tech-bro-heavy office parks around Boulder. But which food trucks should you go to? Well, I have undertaken the
painstaking task of eating lots of food to give you this advice. Because the internet lives for listicles, I have listed five options below. Now, before you all yell at me, I’m not saying these are the only five worth frequenting, but I am a journalism major, so my ability to count stops at five. If you don’t see your favorite here, send me a note and maybe they will make the cut in 2020. Unlike John Hickenlooper. Anyway, prepare your sloppy phone finger signatures: Let’s eat.
Big Dawg Barbecue
There are a lot of barbecue food trucks out there, but too many of them give you the bare minimum — just a piece of meat on a plate. Where are my sides? Well, Big Dawg sells barbecue bowls that feature your
choice of meat along with corn, bacon, and mac and cheese all shoved into the same bowl, with your choice of sauces to slather all over it. Short of just putting it in a feed bag, I’m not sure what else you could want. Oh, and they also sell these salted caramel shortbread goodies that are addictive. Like, really addictive. Pretty sure they put crack in them.
Scrooge Maki
Speaking of bowls, Scrooge Maki’s food truck (a mobile alternative to their University Hill location) makes some of the better poke bowls you can get around here. If you are not a big fish person (and if so, why not, you landlocked heathen?), they also make the bowls with various other proteins, like spicy chicken. Scrooge Maki
also makes giant kimchi dumplings that can be a meal or can make an awesome side to go with your bowl if you’re really hungry.
What the Fork
In addition to having a punny name, I like this truck because it offers interesting twists on comfort classics. Along with the hot dogs and cheese steaks, they offer up a chicken-and-waffles dish that replaces the usual fried chicken with Korean chicken. Oh, and they offer loaded fries smothered in chorizo gravy, salsa and sour cream.
Arepa Joint
If you have not experienced the magic of arepas, you are missing out on a South American treat. It’s a ground maize dough stuffed with some variation on the theme
of meat, cheese, beans and plantains. Oh, sweet plantains. I would eat dog food if you put plantains on it. Of all the Arepa Joint’s offerings, my personal favorite is the chicken salad version. With, of course, plantains. Did I mention I like plantains?

Increasingly beverages with CBD, or hemp-derived oils, are appearing in the grocery and even restaurants, where you can sip flavored infusions with a meal or take one to go. At least that’s the case at The Rib House. Owners Tracy and Merry Ann Webb have partnered with Longmont-based Reef Fusion organic CBD to pair one hot hemp drink with mouth-watering ribs. The brews come on their own in fruity flavors ranging from watermelon to grape or can be hand-shaken into an alcoholic concoction, such as a mojito or rumrunner. Tracy Webb prefers pairing the mango or lemonade flavors with his restaurant’s famous “illegal ribs,” named by a customer who said the Kansas City-style smoked meats were so good they should be outlawed. After four months of carrying Reef Fusion CBD drinks, Webb, a former gymnast who struggles with hand discomfort, swears by the product. “I used to have a lot more pain in my thumbs — so much that it would wake me up at night. Nothing else it worked,” he says. “Now I sleep and feel better.” Illegal ribs with legal weed you can drink? What a pairing.

Leisha Conners Bauer, CU director of health promotion and the Collegiate Recovery Center, said it’s all about having a plan. “The thing we like to emphasize is to make a plan: Know where you’re going, know who you’re going with and know what to do if you get separated from your group of friends and how you’re going to get home,” she said. CU police spokesman Scott Pribble provided the gentle reminder that the possession of alcohol and marijuana is illegal on the CU Boulder campus and in the city of Boulder by anyone under the age of 21. Beyond that, regardless of age, and even with a prescription, it’s illegal to have or use marijuana on campus. Downsides from marijuana use can include driving impairment and memory loss. There can also be compounding effects from being both drunk and high, which can compromise motor skills and reaction time. Additionally, officials
have said, pot use can interfere with learning and academic achievement. Prescription drugs can also pose problems. These generally fall into two categories, stimulants and other drugs, including barbiturates and depressants. On top of negative effects such as irritability and explosiveness, the use of stimulants such as Adderall as a study tool tend to make students overestimate how much they have actually accomplished. Those using stimulants tend to believe they are achievement-oriented and making progress on assignments when they actually are not, officials have said. Sleep has a big impact on memory, and stimulants can inhibit that dynamic, meaning users don’t learn as much as they believe they do. As for depressants, combining one — alcohol, for example — with another — such as prescription drugs for depression, anxiety and insomnia — carries another series of risks, death included, through consequences including respiratory failure. Students who recognize they have a problem can take advantage of oncampus resources to steer them toward recovery. Conners Bauer said CU strives to provide a continuum of care, from prevention through recovery and support. CU offers various classes and workshops, as well as services through the Collegiate Recovery Center, where students can get one-on-one support and find supportive community activities, she said. ideo games have been blamed lately for causing violence, but I think the opposite is true. Reading about the latest mass shooting or sex-trafficking ring is what makes me want to start throwing punches, but I feel more peaceful after a 20
half hour of planting turnip seeds in “Harvest Moon.” Besides the joy of farming virtual veggies, video games are a great tool for building social skills and an outlet for creativity. Like anything else in life, you can overdo it, but it’s not a waste of time if it makes you happy. And if you max out your luck stat, you might win millions in the Fortnite World Cup or make your Minecraft girlfriend your IRL girlfriend.

If you want to hide in your dorm grinding through your thousandth “Skyrim” playthrough, I won’t judge. If you want to find other folks to play with, you have a number of choices in Boulder. With hundreds of members, the CU Gaming student organization develops more than a dozen esports teams and hosts events. This is also the go-to group for students who want to play D&D, Magic: The Gathering and
board games. The Connection in the UMC is the spot on campus you’d usually go to join a casual video game tournament, but it’s closed this semester for renovation. Check out the new and improved space when it reopens in January. If you don’t have the money or space for a virtual reality rig, check out Reality Garage on Pearl Street. Make an appointment online to visit its VR Lounge and
Experience Space. Or take a trip to Louisville for Tilt Pinball’s VR arcade, which has dozens of titles and fancy gear. Closer to home, we have Press Play in downtown Boulder. This underground hangout doesn’t have VR, but it does have a full bar along with classic arcade games, pinball, Skee-Ball and foosball. The signature art style (don’t call it celshading) looks better than ever in “Borderlands 3,” and the world looks much bigger. This version comes with four new types of character classes, known as Vault Hunters: Gunner, Operative, Siren and Beastmaster. “Borderlands 3” is an expansive sequel chock full of beasties and baddies. It comes out Sept. 13 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. (2K Games).

Much of the gameplay looks familiar: Players design habitats and fill them with various species; build paths, decorations and facilities; hire staff; and manage their finances. The most exciting changes are the stunning graphics, the weather effects and the new poop mechanics. That’s right, you can watch your hippos blast nuggets all over the ground and later kick a dungball when they walk through the pile. “Planet Zoo” gives individual animals incredibly detailed models with unique traits generated from their parents and animations closely based on real behaviors, making the game as aesthetically pleasing as it is educational.
‘Death Stranding’
Releases Nov. 8 for PlayStation 4
Possibly the most anticipated game of the year, “Death Stranding” is the latest project from Hideo Kojima, the man behind “Metal Gear Solid.” Get hyped for actors Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”) providing voices and faces in an intricately rendered open world ripe for exploration 24
and interpretation. I’d love to give you a concise summary of what the story is about, but your guess is as good as mine. All I can tell you is there’s lots of snazzy-looking sci-fi gear, black goo and creepiness. ‘Pokémon Sword’ and ‘Pokémon Shield’ Release Nov. 15 for Nintendo Switch These are the latest main series games to come out of the world’s most profitable media franchise, and they’re designed for the Nintendo Switch. It’s the first time the main games weren’t developed for a handheld console, and you’d think that all that extra computing power would mean this will be the most elaborate installment yet. But hardcore fans (Disclaimer: It me) pulled out the pitchforks when developer Game Freak announced only a limited number of Pokémon will be available, undercutting the series motto “Gotta catch ’em all.” If you’re new to Pokémon, you probably don’t care about the drama, but you might be better off checking out last year’s “Pokémon Let’s Go: Pikachu!” instead, which is geared toward more casual players and is simple but charming. ard seltzer is oh-sohot right now. So hot, in fact, that there will soon be a 14% ABV Four Loko Sour Seltzer, prompting Esquire to surmise that “the bropocalypse is near.” But the trend has really hit home in Colorado, where you can find locally produced hard seltzers by breweries like Upslope, Verboten and Elvtd at 5280, a dedicated seltzery in Olde Town Arvada. If you needed further proof that we’ve hit peak hard seltzer, here it is: Denver will soon host its first hard seltzer festival and competition, marking the perfect end to the unofficial “summer of seltzer.” On Sept. 14, Fizz Fight will bring 20 hard seltzer producers to EXDO Event Center, where two sessions of drinkers will sip their way through
unlimited seltzer tastings. For $33.45 (general admission) to $54.66 (VIP), guests can sample spiked seltzers from local producers such as Wild Basin (from Oskar Blues), Snowmelt (from Upslope Brewing) and Elvtd at 5280, along with national brands Natural Light and Bon & Viv. A few indie hard seltzer brands from outside of Colorado have signed on, too, including Seattle’s San Juan Seltzer and Milwaukee’s Press Premium Alcohol Seltzer. Along with a hard seltzer competition and awards ceremony, there will be “interactive art” and live painting from local artists, and drinkers can vote for a people’s choice awardwinner. The first session runs from noon to 3 p.m.; a second is 4 to 7 p.m. Round up the 15 bros who take up all the good seats at your apartment pool every weekend, sipping from a seemingly endless supply of White Claw Black Cherry, and show them that there’s more to that hard seltzer life than just the Claw.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A nearly toothless South Florida woman says she bit a man who
forced his way into her apartment. Alice Coleman tells WSVN she woke up early Monday morning to a fire alarm going off. The 61year-old says that when opened the door, a man pushed his way inside. She says he kept calling her “mama” and telling her everything would be OK. Coleman says
that “with the little teeth I got, I bit him.” Coleman says she ran out of the apartment and he locked himself inside. She called police from a neighbor’s house. Coleman says she’ll be more careful about opening her door now, adding she will open it with her Taser.

he Colorado Buffaloes have an official beer now. The University of Colorado on Tuesday
announced it has partnered with Avery Brewing Company to create Stampede, a Colorado gold lager, to represent the school’s athletic programs. “Boulder is my home, and I’ve been rooting for the Buffs since becoming a Coloradoan 35 years ago,” Avery Brewing Company found Adam Avery said in a news release. “It’s a dream come true to partner with such a great university.”
The 4.5% ABV lager is described as “clean, crisp and crushable,” according to Avery Brewing. It will be introduced at a kickoff celebration at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at the brewery. The first 100 guests will receive a Stampede pint glass. The can features art of the school’s mascot, Ralphie, with the CU logo emblazoned on the bison’s forehead. The design was created by artist Neil Shigley, who had collaborated with the brewery for the packaging for its 25th anniversary last year. “We’re excited to partner with the Avery Brewing Company on this unique endeavor,” CU athletic director Rick George said in a news release. “The artwork of Ralphie on the cans is spectacular and really adds to making this a true, homegrown, Boulder product.” It’s not the first time a local school has teamed up with a brewery. In 2017, Colorado State and New Belgium teamed up to produce the Old Aggie superior lager.

Tips for decorating awkward spaces By Katie Laughridge Tribune News Service
T
oday we're going to tackle something that plagues every house and every home decor lover: awkward space. Sometimes the space is a long narrow hallway, sometimes it's a forgotten corner by the doorway, or maybe even the gap between the sofa and the wall. We've all had those moments standing perplexed in front of an area in the home, thinking "What on earth am I going to put here?" We have these little areas all over the shop and have become experts in both camouflage and finding creative purposes for areas that are sometimes considered a waste of space. When it comes to narrow

hallways, design up, not out. Focusing on the floors, walls and ceilings gives you a ton of decorating surface area without cramping the space. Hallways are a fantastic place to show personality. I think of them as the red carpet lead-up to the grand show of your bedrooms. A colorful rug, a showstopping light fixture and an art display can change
the entire atmosphere of your home and carry your theme throughout. A wall display I love, especially in kitchen hallways and nooks, is a collection of antique plates and platters instead of traditional art to add depth and interest. Using wallpaper in narrow areas brings color and texture to your space without overwhelming it (it's OK to use a large-scale

pattern in a small space!). If you still find your space to be claustrophobic or overly busy, switch out your art for mirrors. This will reflect light to give the illusion of a larger space, on top of being a gorgeous accent. What about other nooks and crannies scattered throughout your home? You can use a lot of the same techniques in these areas. However, not all awkward spaces are equal. Sometimes they pop up in places you need to use. This is where we can really get creative. Transform an otherwise unused space into a wine nook, displaying those well-designed labels (am I the only one who often appreciates the labels more than the contents of the bottle?). For particularly tricky and small areas, look for functional furniture like drop leaf tables that can be moved around and
adjusted to fit your space. Not all awkward spaces are small, either! In an open-concept home with some dead space around the edges, bringing in functional furniture is a great way to create more purpose in an otherwise unused space. Turn an area by a garage or side entrance into a mudroom with a built-in bench and cubbies. This keeps the space compact but is still a productive use of square footage. These are just a few ways to help you make the most of awkward spaces. As is true with most design work, challenges are simply opportunities in disguise and the possibilities are endless. admit I am an early decorator – I like to enjoy my holidays and seasons for as long as possible – and fall is my absolute favorite. I just love sweater weather, hot tea and all the leaves turning
into earthy, warm hues. So yes, the shop is already an autumn wonderland. However, I understand some people may want to wait until the weather drops below 80 to fully indulge, which is why I wanted to share three quick tips for falling into fall – without having to fully
commit to the season.
