The 103rd Weld County Fair is here! The Weld County Board of Commissioners is extremely excited to welcome you to this fantastic event that honors our communies’ FFA and 4-H Club Members. Agriculture has been and remains a staple of Weld County. It serves as a livihood for many of our families, which in turn, helps feed our bellies, clothes our bodies and enrich our souls. And for 4-H and FFA youth, it gives them a means to secure knowledge and capabilities used both within and outside of the agriculture industry. Through various projects such as rocketry, home economics, horticulture, robitics and raising and showing livestock, the fair allows youth to build off the rich agricultural roots in Weld County. Fair participants learn new skills such as goal setting, public speaking and presenting in a professional setting. Fair not only helps them succeed today but also helps positively shape them as future agriculturalists. Thank you, FFA and 4-H Club leaders, for growing the next generation in agriculture by instilling them with hard work, dedication, responsibility and leadership. Weld County Fair 2021! As the President of the Weld County Fair Board, I find myself reflecting on years past. The Weld County Fair is a time-honored tradition that is looked forward to by all Weld County residents. I remember as a child the excitement that would build as the weeks turned into days and the countdown lingered on, until finally we found ourselves loading our animals into the trailer and driving to the fairgrounds. The laughs, the smiles and the tears of fairs past are still some of my fondest memories to date. The community coming together, friends and neighbors enjoying a lemonade together, the hard work and commitment of our children, all proving once again why Weld County is one of the top ag producing counties in the entire nation. I would like to give recognition to all of the other members of the board & volunteers for their support. Without the community support, the Weld County Fair would not run as smoothly as it does year after year. I would also like to thank the Weld County Commissioners for their continued generosity. Emerson Lobato, Attendant Hey Everyone! My name is Emerson Lobato and I’m your 2020-2021 Weld County Fair Attendant. I’ve spent two years now holding this amazing position and I recognize that many of you don’t know me very well! To start off I am 17 and Junior in high school. After I graduate next year I plan to attend LCCC to study agriculture and get my associates. After that I plan to go to OSU or UW to get my bachelors in agriculture. I only say agriculture as an umbrella term, I’m still figuring out the details. My biggest inspirations are Dolly Parton, Amberly Snyder, and of course Cher. I think that in itself tells you everything about me. My Parents are Jim GIbbs and Vanesa Bullock, they are my biggest supporters and the people who are always at the gate waiting to say good job or you better pony up! I’m your typical horse crazy teenage girl, my life revolves around my horses and always growing in my sport all while prepping for Weld County Fair! Aside from all of the fun horse play I am also the Sentinel for Windsor High School FFA and the President of my 4-H Club the Horse Whisperers! As you can tell I pretty much eat sleep and breathe ag; it’s truly my passion! I hope to become a role model to many kids while also bettering myself through this position. I cannot wait to see each of you at this year’s Weld County Fair! Let’s have a great year!

Ella Niccoli, Attendant Hi everyone my name is Ella Niccoli, one of the 2020- 2021 Weld Fair Attendants. During my time off I am a busy 17 year old and also a full time student at Greeley Central. Along with being a 12 year member of Weld County 4-H, a Colorado 4-H District 2 Senator, a Youth Executive Council member and I am also a part time student at Aims Community College. In my free time I enjoy showing my goats around the state and many other shows in surrounding states. I am an only child to my parents Ty and Charity Niccoli and I have 2 yellow labs named Rugar and Findley. Currently I am in the middle of my junior year at Greeley Central and in the midst of college tours and applications for my top choices of Colorado State University, Oregon State University, and Texas A&M. I am looking to study in the field of Veterinary Medicine. In 4-H, my projects include Market show goats, cake decorating, home design and décor, restoration, buymanship, shooting sports and scrapbooking. I’ve also had opportunity to be a part of Colorado State 4-H conferences at CSU, attend Colorado Association of Fair’s which is a royalty conference in Colorado Springs, Leadership Youth Development Conference in Denver and many more activities that I would have never experienced it wasn’t for 4-H. This year I will be able to take my Citizen Washington Focus trip to Washington D.C and the east coast for the week after being delayed from last year. 2021 FAIR BOOK DEDICATION: Keith Maxey

ach year the Weld County Fair Board chooses one person that they feel has contributed to the annual event through their work promoting the agricultural industries and continuing the legacy of the fair for future generations. For the 2021 Fair Book Dedication, the board —comprised of Eli Hatch, Mike Frink, Isaia Aricayos, Christie Gable, Aaron Helus, Tom Bledsoe and Ken Vaughn — has chosen longtime Weld County resident Keith Maxey for the title. “It is quite an honor,” Maxey, 66, said. “I appreciate the recognition they have given me.” Growing up on a dairy farm in Weld County, where he currently lives across the street from, Maxey has been involved with the fair in a variety of capacities since the 1960s, he said.

Fairs like Weld County’s give youth the opportunity to excel, shine and be recognized for their efforts, he added. “Secondly, you also get to work with a lot of great people,” Maxey said. “Whether that is the staff at the extension office, fair board members, all the different committee people — there’s a whole slew of volunteers who give up a lot of their personal time to help out.” One of the things Maxey is most proud of when it comes to the fair is that organizers have always managed to keep the event a family friendly affair. “You might not see some of the things that you see at other county fairs, like carnivals or commercial exhibits,” he explained. “They put the focus on the kids and the focus on the family. And I think our community really appreciates that.”

“Through 4-H and through FFA I exhibited at the Weld County Fair. Then in the 1980s and 1990s, I had kids that exhibited at the fair,” Maxey explained. “I stayed involved serving on a committee, particularly for the dairy show. Then in 1995, I began employment with Weld County Extension and through that position with them, I just was involved in the fair in a number of ways, as are most extension agents.” The Livestock Show, Dairy Show and Jr. Livestock Show are just a few of the events Maxey helped with each year at the fair. “For the last 25 years, until my retirement in December of last year, I worked with the fair board and committee members to help present the fair,” he said, with pride. When Maxey thinks back about his years working with the Weld County Fair, some of his most favorite memories include all the youngsters and teens involved in the different shows and competitions. “To see the pride and to see the work that they put into in getting their exhibits ready for fair,” Maxey said. “Whether it’s their horse, a calf or a pig, or it’s some of the general projects like rocketry or restoration or clothing, these kids put a lot of time and effort into learning about their projects, getting it ready for fair and presenting at fair.”

WELD COUNTY FAIR SHINING STAR: Corey Longhurst

he Weld County Fair and its associated programs certainly help prepare participants for farming or agriculture careers, but their impacts can be felt far beyond the rural towns.

Corey Longhurst, 34, was named Weld County Fair’s 2021 Shining Star. Longhurst resides in San Francisco where he works with Bain and Co. to help Fortune 500 companies address various issues regarding their growth and futures. “It sets you up to be anything you want to be, because it gives you these foundational skills of working hard, taking responsibility for what you’re doing and how to manage a business,” Longhurst said. “I think 4-H and FFA, for me, is a really solid path for setting people up to be entrepreneurs, businesspeople and make contributions in any industry.” Longhurst’s love of farming began when he was 8 years old and got a bucket calf from his grandfather. The calf was supposed to stay in the backyard, but Longhurst was often seen walking his four-legged friend around Keenesburg. At the time, the population was less than 600 people, but his parents thought a move to the country would be best.

Longhurst attended Weld Central High School before studying at Colorado State for his undergraduate degree. He initially thought he would work in farming or agriculture, which he still holds in high regard, but went into law. He attended Drake University in Iowa and worked as an attorney for six years before attending Stanford Business School for his MBA. Despite not actively participating in ag work, Longhurst can’t express enough gratitude for every person who took the time to work with and encourage him. They inspired him to do the same at his current job, seeking others to mentor, and he hopes others who still live in Weld will take the time to support other young people. “The people who invested in me were investing in the future,” Longhurst said. “They were investing in my future, but they were also investing in the future of the community and the future here in Weld County. I just want to encourage people to continue doing that. It’s just made a world of difference for me.”

Soon after, Longhurst began rearing sheep — cattle would be too big, his parents said — and participating in the Weld County Fair, 4-H and FFA. Not only did he present his own flock, which he grew to about 150 sheep, he participated in livestock judging competitions. These opportunities provided Longhurst with a laundry list of positive experiences, skill development, mentorship and success. He truly learned to “take ownership and responsibility” over the things he does. Longhurst called his sheep project a small business, because he had to figure out not only how to purchase animals but how to feed them, how to keep them healthy, how to purchase equipment for shows and then how to sell the animals and reinvest the money into the next year’s project. He knows the business, decision-making and communications skills didn’t come on their own. Instead, he attributes his fond memories, personal growth and willingness to receive help to the many community members who mentored him during his childhood. “In a weird way, 4H and FFA opened the world to me,” he said. “It gave me an incredible amount of opportunities because of the responsibility skills that I had as a kid.”

FRIENDS OF THE FAIR: G&M Implement and Pfeifs invest in the future of agriculture industry through 4-H, FFA

n nearly two decades in the farm equipment business, G&M Implement, Inc. owners Glenn and Mary Pfeif have found an important avenue for their community service ventures.

Mary Pfeif said G&M has been one of the top bidders of animals since 2006 and they’ve been No. 1 in three of the last four years. “That was the best way to support the kids and it’s one program where the kids get all of the money,” Pfeif said. “4-H and FFA will always be our main community service.”

It’s the northern Colorado students who participate in local 4-H and FFA programs at area schools. “They’re the future, right?” Mary Pfeif asked while discussing G&M’s investment in the young agricultural entrepreneurs. “If we lose these kids off the farm and out of agriculture, they are it.” To protect and preserve the future of the industry, the Pfeifs have put their money where their mouth is since opening G&M Implement in 2002. That's why they were named the Weld County Fair’s 2021 Friends of the Fair. The Pfeifs have consistently supported 4-H and FFA students in a variety of ways year to year, but one of the key components of the Pfeifs’ commitment comes during the annual Weld County Fair. Near the end of the fair, which will be held for the 103rd year July 24-Aug. 2,, 4-H hosts a livestock sale. The cost of the animals is based on where they finished in competition during the fair. G&M Implement has been a top bidder of the animals dating to the early 2000s, and the money then goes back to the students for their future work in agriculture, such as to contribute the funds toward college classes.

The Pfeifs live in Weld County between Greeley and Briggsdale. They've been married for nearly 46 years. They opened G&M Implement 19 yeas ago in Greeley to fill a void with the closure of a Massey Ferguson dealer. Glenn had previously worked for another Massey Ferguson dealer, and he was asked to step in and open another dealership so area farmers would have an option in Greeley. The Pfeifs opened a second G&M Implement location in Sterling in 2006. Glenn and Mary’s son-in-law, Michael Fergus, manages the Sterling store. Colton Fergus, the Pfeifs’ grandson, works in the parts department in Greeley. Colton Fergus is the son of the Pfeifs’ daughter, Trudy, and Michael Fergus. Colton and Michael Fergus are the future of the G&M operation. Mary Pfeif said the father and son are “the succession plan.” Glenn and Mary, though, are not quite ready to have Colton and Michael bring that plan to life. Mary will be 64 this year and Glenn will be 65. “It’s in our blood and we’ll be doing as long as we can,” Mary said. “We have a ways to go yet."
