When the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes debuts on July 8, it will be less than 12 months since the TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes course opened for the first time. However, the course and the dream to bring PGA TOUR golf back to Colorado has been in the planning stages for more than a decade. After extensive work with the PGA TOUR it became the first Tournament Players Club course in the state of Colorado. “We worked very closely with the PGA TOUR design and construction teams throughout the process to make sure the course had everything necessary to host a tournament,” said John Buser, General Manager of TPC Colorado. This will be the first time
since The International in Castle Pines concluded in 2006 that the state will host a PGA TOUR event. Arthur Schaupeter was chosen to design the course. The University of Colorado-trained architect and veteran course designer devised an 18-hole, par 72, Scottish links-style course. The course’s seven sets of tees extend the overall TPC Colorado from 4,000 yards to a tournament length of 7,991 yards. HOW TO BUILD A CHALLENGING HOLE The design team needed to make sure that the course wasn’t too “easy’ for the pros at the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes, given the flight-enhancing thin air and even terrain without

the embowered foliage that dominates courses like Augusta National. The design’s piece de resistance is the par-5 No. 13 hole. Stretching more than 770 yards off the back tees, it is one of the longest golf holes in the United States. A hole in one on No. 13 would likely make ESPN’s Top 10 Plays. “Arthur did an outstanding job of working with the site and the topography to create a beautiful and challenging course. The design involved everything from spectacular angles for the cameras and viewer sightlines to easy ingress and egress points for the players and the public,” Buser said. The golfers at the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes will vie June 30, 2019
for a $600,000 purse and a qualifying spot on the PGA TOUR. The 2019 Korn Ferry Tour has 27 tournaments in 17 states and four countries with the Championship event on Labor Day weekend. FINALLY, A HOMEGROWN COLORADO PGA TOUR EVENT For Colorado PGA TOUR pros like David Duval and Mark Hubbard, the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes event finally means they get to enjoy home field advantage.
Because the course is so new and this is the inaugural event, the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes will be a learning experience for the more than 500 volunteers from the golf world and the community and the 30,000 or so golf fans they will host during tournament week including a highly anticipated Wednesday Pro-Am event. “We are so proud and excited to host everyone at the Championship because they will see how special the

site is and get a glimpse into what it will become in the future,” said TPC Colorado General Manager John Buser. By the time the TPC Colorado opens for its second year in 2020, the Clubhouse will have doubled in size offering more space for events, additional member services and dining for members and visitors. Upon build-out, the 800-acre Heron Lakes master-planned community will include 1,188 residences from townhomes to estates, he said. Recreation opportunities will also be opened up on the lakes and on more than eight miles of trails. The site along Lonetree Reservoir and McNeil Reservoir boast panoramic views of the Front Range and the 14ers beyond. “The Clubhouse was carefully situated so that visitors see snow-covered Long’s Peak straight ahead as they enter. The view from here really is amazing,” Buser said.

‘FIRM AND FAST’ All-star greens team maintaining a perfect PGA TOUR-ready course
By John Lehndorff for Reporter-Herald If it’s 3 a.m. any day of Tournament week, Michael Cooper and his crew are already getting ready to attack the greens at TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes. The Superintendent of the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes will have a crew of 28 on hand grown from his small year-round crew. “We really couldn’t do this without all the volunteers,” Cooper said. Those volunteers include a Colorado all-star team recruited from some of the state’s best golf courses to care for the first Tournament Players Club course ever in Colorado. “Other courses are sending their Supers (superintendents) and Assistant Supers to help out so we have a lot of experience on hand. We’re pretty much here in shifts from
3 a.m. to 10 or 11 at night,” Cooper said. “In the morning we’ll have 10 people to set the course. We get together for a 4:30 a.m. meeting. After that it’s a mad dash to stay in front of the players. We mow and check the front nine first and then back nine,” he said. As each of 18 holes is checked off the list there is one final critical task to accomplish. “The last thing we do in the morning is change the location of each hole each day of the tournament with a rules official,” Cooper said. Now on the first tee: A-team groomers Before the last players finish their round the Cooper’s crew jump into action methodically mowing and fixing divots in the grass as needed. Special attention is lavished on the greens which vary from 5,000 to 11,500 square feet each.

“The crew rolls the greens smooth to increase the speed. The pros like it firm and fast. It should be like putting on a carpet,” he said. During the inaugural TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes, the greens are coddled: hand watered, top dressed and manicured. The weather determines the course of care and watering becomes a fine science. “During the tournament we do a lot of hand watering in selected spots. You never want to saturate the ground and make the turf soggy,” he said. Michael Cooper said TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes uses about 20 acre feet of water a year to keep the 7,991-yard course green. “During the Tournament we may apply up to a million gallons a night, especially if it has been a dry, sunny, windy day,” he said.

Making greens putt-able year-round job The real work of creating a PGA TOUR level course is done year-round. Superintendent Cooper points to “good practices” including aeration and keeping the “thatch” layer under control. Once a year the course is closed for week so Cooper’s crew can do deeper work on maintaining the health of the turf. The fleet used at the course and during the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes is John Deere equipment. “Because the PGA (TOUR) has a sponsorship agreement, for the tournament we’ll get loaner equipment from John Deere. We’ll have about twenty walking and riding mowers ready and about 18 utility vehicles plus golf carts,” he said. Contingency plans are in place to deal with afternoon thunderstorms common in Northern Colorado. “We’ve all got our assignments ahead of time to fix bunkers and squeegee the greens. By Adam Goldstein for Reporter-Herald The Path to the PGA TOUR runs through some of the most picturesque, challenging and well-renowned golf courses in the world. Golfers looking to compete in on the sport’s biggest stage must prove themselves, and the annual Korn Ferry Tour is
a high-profile means to do so. The Tour runs from January to September, and the competition offers players from across the globe a chance to play on some of the most hallowed courses in the U.S. and beyond. From the kickoff Great Exuma Classic held in January at Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course in the Bahamas

For the first time in its still brief history, the TPC Colorado course in Berthoud will rank among those elite courses. This year, the Korn Ferry Tour will make its way through the Centennial State for the TPC Championship at Heron Lakes from July 8 to 14. Top golfers from all over the world will convene at Berthoud on the state’s newest ground-up Tournament Players Club golf development, which opened last year. Golfers will kick off the competition on July 11; after 36 holes, that field will be cut to 65 and ties, all of whom will be looking for a gateway to an even bigger stage. “The top 25 point-earners
from the entire Korn Ferry Tour season will receive their PGA TOUR card. It’s their invitation to play on that tour next season,” said Drew Blass, Tournament Director for the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes. “All the players are looking for that opportunity, and the quality of golf in this tour is almost exactly the same as it is in the PGA TOUR.” Indeed, the stakes in this competition are high: 50 players from the Korn Ferry Tour are awarded cards through the length of the event, 25 during the regular season and 25 during the final three events. So much is on the line in these tournaments that while the Korn Ferry Tour is officially touted as a “development” tour, it draws the scrutiny and excitement of the global golf community. proving ground for the sport’s top talent – veterans making their way back to the top tiers and new stars exploring the heights for the first time share the course, and the entire world pays attention. That’s why the fact that the Tour is making a stop at Berthoud’s newest course is such an honor, and it’s why it’s such an important milestone for Colorado golf in general. For nearly a week, the gaze of the global golf community will be centered squarely on the Front Range, and the community at TPC Colorado couldn’t be happier. “Colorado hasn’t had an annual PGA TOUR event since 2006. The players, the fans, the people in the golf community are already talking about TPC Colorado and this event,” Blass said, adding that the 2019 stop in Berthoud won’t be an isolated incident. “We’ve signed for the next couple of years to host this tournament, and we’re thrilled.”
It’s a recurring event that will shine a high-profile spotlight on the Berthoud community. International golfers will mingle with hometown heroes on the course – this year’s competition features top players from China and other far-flung countries, as well as Colorado native Mark Hubbard. Hubbard, who’ll serve as one of the headline players in this year’s tournament, will almost certainly return to a spot in the PGA TOUR later this year. “We’ve got people from all over wanting to come to Colorado and play in this event,” Blass said, adding that the featured golfers will range from “Young Guns” to “Veterans.” “There are some of the up-and-comers, but there are players in the field you’ve seen in the PGA TOUR. There are a lot of different players, and a lot of history.” Though plenty of highprofile star power from the international golf world will be featured in the Colorado
stop of the Korn Ferry Tour , Blass and the rest of the staff behind the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes are working hard to ensure accessibility. The tournament is designed to welcome spectators of all ages and backgrounds; tickets start at just $15 for daily grounds admission and $35 for an all-week grounds ticket, and attendees under 17 get in for free. What’s more, the event will feature opportunities for golfers of all levels to interact directly with pros. On Wednesday, July 10, a pro-am event will offer chances to walk the course and get inside tips from the pros. Prices range from $2,500 for a single spot to $8,000 for a four-player, team spot. According to Blass, more than 500 volunteers from across Colorado have already signed on to help make the inaugural competition a success. “We want everyone to
experience it,” Blass said. “This competition will be here for five years. We want to support the community and make this a northern Colorado event that gives back to the community,” he added, pointing to the fact that proceeds from the event will benefit local charities. “For us to do that, we have to keep building it as a village where the whole community takes part.”

The event takes place July 8-14 at the newly opened TPC Colorado in Berthoud, an Arthur Schaupeter Golf Course Architects designed course. It is the first new course to be built in Colorado in more than 10 years. The tournament hosts a field of 156 golfers who are competing for a share of the $600,000 purse and a spot on the PGA TOUR. The TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes joined the Korn Ferry Tour in September 2018. “I appreciate the opportunity that the event has given me to compete in my home state of Colorado and support the community. I think it’s great that the PGA TOUR will be back on the Front Range on an annual basis, and I hope this event stays here for a long time.” Duval began his professional career on the Korn Ferry Tour, winning the Nike Wichita Open in August and Nike Tour Championship in 1993. Duval earned his PGA TOUR card after finishing No. 8 on the money list after the 1994 season. He won 13 tournaments on the PGA TOUR, including the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2001 and the 1999 PLAYERS Championship. He was the first player to shoot a 59 in
the final round of a TOUR event when he did so at the 1999 Desert Classic. Duval was a member of the 1999 and 2002 U.S. Ryder Cup teams, as well as the 1996, 1998, and 2000 Presidents Cup team. COLORADO NATIVE, MARK HUBBARD, Commits to Inaugural Colorado Korn Ferry Tour Mark Hubbard to play in TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes Colorado touring golf professional, Mark Hubbard, will be one of the headliners in the July 8-14 TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes, part of the Korn Ferry Tour, Path to the PGA TOUR. “I cannot wait to play in the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes. I’ve missed playing golf in Colorado and I am so grateful for the
opportunity to compete in my home state in front of friends and family,” said Hubbard. Originally from Denver, Colorado, Hubbard knows the Colorado golf scene well. He attended Colorado Academy in Denver where he was allstate in golf and basketball. Hubbard played collegiately at San Jose State University before turning professional in 2012. He rose through the ranks of professional golf, graduating from the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada in 2013 to the Korn Ferry Tour. In 2014, Hubbard earned six top-10s
in his rookie year on the Korn Ferry Tour, enough to finish inside The Top 25 and earn his PGA TOUR card. Hubbard competed on the PGA TOUR from 2015-17, earning nine top-10s during that stretch. He returned to the Korn Ferry Tour in 2018 and this year is projected to regain his PGA TOUR card. He earned his first Korn Ferry Tour win this year in February at the LECOM SunCoast Classic and has added four more top-25s through the first half of the season.

A narrow drainage swale flowing across the front edge, and the shallow depth of the green will require players to be precise with their approach. The hazard sneaks around behind the right half of the green requiring a little more attention on approach shots. Hole locations on the left half of the green are backstopped by a high ridge. Ending up with a hanging lie in the rough, will create additional concerns as players look down at a shallow green running away from them, ending up in the hazard below the front edge of the green.

The tees are perched on a bluff above the natural lake, giving players a view of the largest green surface on the golf course. The main feature of the green is a deep swale cutting across the middle creating three different areas for hole locations. The front plateau is shallow and will require a shorter yet precise shot to keep the ball on it for a birdie opportunity. The swale itself is located along the bottom will collect tee shots that are close. The back plateau is the largest area but is surrounded on three sides by water. A nerveless tee shot will be required to get all the way back onto that peninsula. For those still trying to ease into the round there is ample room short right of the green. Be careful with the chip as the green runs away from the player towards the lake.

This hole wraps around the lake with rolling ground that extends off of the high ridge to the west. The change in elevation adds a vertical dimension as one of the many options. Players can hit anything from driver to seven iron off the tee. The scorecard yardage measures the hole as a dogleg left, but the heroic shot would be played straight at the green if the wind is favorable. There are two “alleys” available to utilize while trying to reach the green. The beginning of the rock wall just left of the cross bunker puts the player’s tee shot on a flat narrow piece of fairway that should allow the ball to run up onto the green. The players using the more forward tees, playing up and over the hill just right of the cross bunker should catch the backside downslope that will also direct a ball down onto the green. For those who play more conservatively, lay-up positioning will be important if they want to have a view of the green on their second shot. The further away from the edge of the lake they play, the less they will see on their second
shot. There is a lot of fairway to play to on this hole. The key is to avoid the three sod-wall pot bunkers with the tee shot.

There are five holes located in this central valley. The first will be the long, fourth hole. The fairway has ample width, but is defined along the left side by a deep arroyo and on the right side by a pair of deep bunkers. Players need to identify the hole location to determine their best angle of approach. The green sits at the foot of a hill with a large bunker wrapping around the left side. Hole locations on the left of the green will be tough to get close to unless the tee shot has been positioned near the fairway bunkers on the right. Hole locations to the right side of the green will give players a bit more latitude. Shots played at the green from farther left in the fairway will need to cross the green side bunker, but will have the length of the green to work with as these longer approach shots run out. With a favorable wind this green can be reached in two shots, but both shots will need to be superiorly executed. The tee shot is played to an expansive fairway with a sharp ridge splitting it into a narrower “high road” and a broad, low road. The green is potentially reachable from either location as the hole is relatively straight. Approaching the green from the high road will give the player a view of the green and will provide the best angle to funnel the ball onto it. Golfers playing a three shot par 5 will have several choices. The fairway swings far to the left wrapping around the large bunker fronting the green. The small green has challenges around it, including a steep fall-off along the back left and hidden pot bunkers off the back and right sides. Players can choose from nearly 90 degrees of angles to approach this green, depending upon the hole location.

Elevated tees give players a great view of the hole as well as the entire Front Range. Dynamic bunkers line the hole from the right side with an additional bunker located on the left side, just short of the green. The wide fairway sitting within these bunkers and just short of the green looks inviting even with the small green of 5,000 square feet - the smallest on the golf course. The green drops to the left on the front half and to the right on the back half so players will need to proceed with caution and precision. Position in the fairway will be very important for the approach shot. The deep pot bunker fronting the green will also play a substantial role in helping players formulate a plan of attack here. The green is reachable in one stroke if the wind is down or out of the east, but that shot is high risk/ high reward. Positioning the tee shot adjacent to the left side bunker will open a direct shot to the green without having to navigate the deep pot bunker.

Having played to the lowest part of the golf course, players start the journey back up with a semi-blind tee shot. Two hills frame the fairway, leading players to the green to set up their tee shot. From the landing area, players will face another semi-blind shot on the approach. This shot should be played onto the low “bluff” fronting the green. This will allow the ball to bounce and roll onto the green surface which falls away and to the left.

The eighth hole is the most site-specific hole on the golf course. This relatively short par 3 is played on a narrow, natural peninsula lined by large Cottonwood trees. The peninsula extends out into Lonetree Reservoir and as players get out to the green they are greeted
with their first full view of the lake. It is here that the proximity and natural beauty of the course presents itself. The 50-yard-deep green with its low rolling contours will provide plenty of variety for various hole locations. Natural wetlands line the fairway which is no wider than the green itself. The dry ground between the tees and the green, is the only safe place on this hole besides the green.

The final hole of the front nine bends strongly from left to right around the grove of Cottonwood trees, through a beautiful valley. Shaped bunkers and stacked sod wall bunkers give players a few options on their tee shot. A strong bend to the right can play short if players can place their tee shot in the fairway between the bunkers. The shallow green sits on the bank of Lonetree Reservoir with a backdrop of Long’s Peak. A shorter iron, used with precision, is needed on the approach shot.

The natural undulating ground sets up a variety of options off the tee, while the pot bunkers and Lonetree Reservoir enhance the setting. The larger green tempts players to try to reach and hold it with their tee shot providing an eagle opportunity. Players not inclined to try for the green with their tee shot have plenty of other options. A well-played shot to the top of the plateau in the fairway adjacent to the pot bunkers will leave players with a full shot into the green with a short wedge. A slightly more aggressive play would be to sling a longer left-to-right shot off of the second bunker trying to catch the downslope that will advance the ball to the bottom of the green. This takes the bunkers out of play for the short approach to the green.

The only bunkerless, waterless hole on the golf course, the fairway and green are full of rolling contours that could take shots away from their intended line, feed an errant shot onto the green or back towards the fairway. The hole plays softly uphill from tee to green which disguises some of the movement and subtlety. A strong ridge running along the center of the fairway creates two options to approach the green. This same ridge continues into and through the green. Players will need to line up their approach shot angle with the hole location on the green. Correct navigation through these contours will allow the player to control the run-out of their shots.

The longest hole on the course, this is intended to be a full three-shot par five even for the best players. The tee shot is wide open and slopes softly from right to left with the dogleg of the hole, allowing players to swing away as they set up the important second shot. Upon arriving in the landing area, the players will face “Hell Bunker”. Laying up short of “Hell Bunker” on the second shot will leave players with a third shot approaching 200 yards in length. Players will need to club up to on their second shot to reach a shorter or more comfortable yardage for their approach shot. Hell Bunker has three distinct hollows with stacked sod wall bunkering, each one 40 yards further down the hole than the previous wall. The rest of the bunker is a combination of strips of sand, fescue islands and peninsulas. Ending up in the bunker could leave players with a shot that could be advanced toward the green or a lay-up shot that needs to be put back in play wherever possible. The green sits on an angle to the approach line of play, guarded front right by a pot bunker and front left by a steep slope. The green pitches towards the players, but an approach shot played a bit too long will put you off the back of the green in low undulating ground.

Players will need to be careful not to over swing on the tee shot as hitting the fairway is critical to opening up the full range of options for the second shot. The green sits high among the hills, a partial punchbowl and peninsula as it peeks out from behind a high, fronting hill. The large green has distinct movement on the surface, making it imperative to find the correct area of the green relative to the hole. Playing a fade up and over the hill and pot bunker to the left, will likely funnel the ball onto the green. A slight pull to the left, and the player will find themselves in a shallow fairway with several options for the next shot. The easiest hole location to see from the landing area, on the western point of the green, might be the hardest one to get close to. The green is shallow on this end and a miscalculation short, long or to the right will leave the player below the hole, 20-30 yards away by the time the ball stops rolling down the steep embankment. Playing the hole as a three shot par five might be the prudent play. It will be easier for players to navigate the challenges around the green with a short iron or wedge in their hands. Carefully lay-up your position by avoiding the deep, larger, pot bunkers.

The 17th hole heads south and plays downhill from tee to green. The slight dogleg left is strategically straightforward. The inside corner of the dogleg is well-guarded with bunkers, undulating slopes and fescue. The front right pot bunker, dictates that players should try to place their tee shots on the left side of the fairway close to the bunkers at the green. This will minimize the need to carry the green side bunker with a long shot approach. The green is framed by a moderately high mound to the left and a low slope on the right. The fairway wraps around the green giving players who miss the surface with their approach shots a variety of ways to try and make par.

Playing slightly uphill from tee to green, this hole will challenge players on their tee shot and approach shot. The fairway is wide, with a slight slope running diagonally across the landing area creating a plateau to the right and a lower bench on the left. A small pot bunker cut into the upslope defines your two fairway options. The long approach will need to carry or avoid the deep pot bunker just short of the green. The green is framed by slopes and challenges. A slight roll is located short right of the green and extends across the approach area making an approach from the left fairway preferable. A sharp drop-off along the left edge of the green makes the left side hole locations difficult to get close to unless the player approaches from the right. A bunker behind the green will put a premium on distance control with the long approach shot, and a slight low back right of the green will also collect shots that run-out.
