Korn Ferry Suits Volunteers to a Tee

In the shadow of professional golfers at the Korn Ferry Tour in Berthoud, more than 700 volunteers are practically invisible. But the tournament could not go on without them. There will be volunteer drivers and walking scorers, standard bearers and player services. In fact, there are 16 different volunteer committees headed by volunteers. Neither the chairs nor the workers get paid, but the jobs are so desirable that the volunteer positions were ﬁlled in April for the July event. The beautiful course outside of Berthoud is indeed worthy of the Korn Ferry Tour. This year’s $600,000 TPC Colorado Championship is set for July 8-11, with pre-tournament activities planned for July 5-7. It’s the developmental tour for the U.S.-based PGA TOUR and features professional golfers who have either not yet reached the PGA TOUR, or who have done so but then failed to win enough FedEx Cup points to stay at that level. Those who are on the top 25 of the money list at year’s end are given PGA TOUR memberships for the next season. Since the 2013 season, 6 TPC COLORADO CHAMPIONSHIP

the Korn Ferry Tour has been the primary pathway for those seeking to earn their PGA TOUR card. At the end of the combined 2020 and 2021 Korn Ferry Tour season, the top 25 performers in the regular season will earn PGA Tour cards, with 25 more up for grabs during the 2021 Finals. Three people working on Berthoud’s Korn Ferry Tour talked about what keeps them coming back year after year to head up volunteer committees. Doug Elsesser and Stefanie Vasquez are what you might call a power couple in the world of volunteers. Together they are chairs of three national tournaments for walking scorers, scoring control and standard bearers, organizing hundreds of volunteers every year and helping with three or four more other tournaments. They are retired military and learned mandatory service in the Navy. “We love doing this. It’s an expensive hobby, but we have a passion for it,” Elsesser said. The Berthoud tournament is one of the most popular among the workers, according to Elsesser. “The number of volunteers for this tournament far exceeds any other event because so many people want to work on it,” he said. “Some tournaments have a hard time ﬁlling the volunteer roles, so this is a good problem to have.” Vasquez said volunteering as a walking scorer is an addictive position. It’s a very important job and considered the hardest committee to get into. The 75 walking scorers for each tournament literally walk around with the golfers, keep track of all scores and provide the statistics to the PGA website and media platforms on a smartphone-type device. She said these volunteers walk the entire golf course, recording every stroke, every surface, every penalty. Why would anyone want that pressure? Elsesser said walking scorers are the only people to completely go from tee box to green with the golfers,

hear the golfers talk with their caddies, listen to why they pick this club over that—and even see and hear their meltdowns! The scorers have respectful relationships with the golfers, even though they are warned not to talk to the players unless they are first talked to. Usually at the end of the round the players thank the volunteers and give them signed golf balls. Vasquez started following Elsesser at tournaments, then literally followed him into the volunteer field. She has had two heart attacks, one at age 43 and one at 46. And still she can’t stop training volunteers, both in person and on YouTube video. Elsesser said, “New people contact us to see how we run things. We share our best practices; there is no proprietary info, just the best of things we’ve learned in 20 years of working on tournaments.” Chris Parkes runs the transportation and operations committees for this Korn Ferry Tour. He said the TPC Colorado course is “a long, beautiful course with so much variety that it forces the golfers to use a lot of the clubs in their bag. The players who came here before were completely blown away by the amount of fans. We have 700 plus volunteers and we even had to turn some away.” Parkes believes this tournament is so successful in recruiting volunteers for three reasons. He said, “One: people in the community really care about northern Colorado. Two: people are looking for things to do and they believe that being outside is safer than being inside.” The third reason is the most significant. “There is such a margin of error. The ball can bounce the right way versus the wrong way,” Parkes said. “You can see the next generation of golf stars right here. The great players, Justin Thomas, Cameron Champ, David Duval, Bubba Watson, Jason Day and more, have played in Korn Ferry Tours. At the 2020 event we saw Will Zalatoris win his professional golf event with a score of 15 under. He went on to finish in the top ten in the last three majors. If he hadn’t won this event, he wouldn’t have gotten that opportunity and it changed his life. When you’re volunteering, you get to meet these young men up close and personal and follow them into their careers.”

2020 Winner Will Zalatoris— One of Golf’s Biggest Successes

As the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes returns in an increasingly normalized world, there are some very high expectations for 2020’s champion. Last year offered some unprecedented challenges for everyone in America, and the 2020 Korn Ferry Tour stop in Berthoud was an unexpected opportunity and showcase for Will Zalatoris, a young golfer who shot from being a relative unknown to a major national contender. Since then, he’s been recognized by celebrities and fans around the country, and comes back to Colorado as a player to watch, with a very strong 2021 season already under his belt. The Wall Street Journal recently called Zalatoris the fastest-rising star in modern golf, acknowledging his rapid rise during the curious circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being ranked 543rd in the early part of 2020, Zalatoris managed a sixth-place finish at last year’s U.S. Open at Southern California’s Torrey Pines Golf Course. It was, however, his 2020 win at Berthoud that truly pushed Zalatoris into the spotlight. He closed the TPC Colorado Championship with a finalround, three-under score of 69 to take a one-stroke victory over Chase Johnson. The win gave the young Zalatoris his first Korn Ferry Tour championship and 10 TPC COLORADO CHAMPIONSHIP

pushed him to the top of the Korn Ferry Tour points list; it was his 26th Korn Ferry Tour start. So far in 2021, Zalatoris landed a T8 finish at the PGA Championship, his third top-10 spot in what is only his fourth major championship appearance. He also finished solo-second in his debut at the Masters Tournament, which gave him his first top-two finish on the PGA Tour. There, he was the only player to record under-par scores in all four rounds (70-68-71-70), and he led the field in Par-4 Scoring Average, with a 3.98. Despite that important 2020 Colorado victory and his subsequent successes, there’s a slight oddity stemming from tour regulations and the COVID-19 challenges last season: the fast-moving Zalatoris still does not have his PGA Tour card, due to rule changes enacted to cope with the pandemic. But his top spot at Heron Lakes established him as a bright prospect who’s already had a 2021 for the record books, with his career earnings already pushing $4 million. The 24-year-old, 6-foot-2 San Francisco native graduated from North Carolina’s Wake Forest University in 2018 with a Psychology degree. Now based in Plano, Texas, he’s been an avid golfer since childhood, and was 2014 US Junior Amateur champion. His honors quickly escalated in 2017 as he was a First-Team All-American, a Walker Cup Team Member and was selected as the 2017 AAC Player of the Year. For much of his relatively brief time in the spotlight, observers have noted that the young golfer bears more than a slight resemblance to the caddy in Adam Sandler’s golf-themed 1996

“Happy Gilmore.” This April, Sandler himself Tweeted in support of Zalatoris’s blossoming career, after Zalatoris offered to carry his fictional clubs: “Mr. Gilmore is watching you and is very proud.” Zalatoris also got some additional star-power support during his March 2021 appearance at the Players Championship, with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo giving him some good-natured ribbing on his meteoric rise – not to mention words of encouragement from Zalatoris’s former coaches and fellow athletes as a Wake Forest Demon Deacon. In April, he also announced his engagement to his girlfriend Caitlin Sellers, herself a former Demon Deacon athlete, earning lots of coverage on USA Today’s Golfweek. At last year’s TPC Colorado Championship, no one was more shocked or delighted by the win than Zalatoris himself. “It’s probably been four years since I’ve won a golf tournament,” he noted in 2020. “It still hasn’t sunk in, that’s the part that’s kind of crazy.” The clincher came with a birdie putt on Heron Lakes’ 128-yard par-3 16th hole, where Zalatoris took quick advantage of an eight-foot distance to the pin, and headed into the lead. “Winning requires luck and that ball was literally two inches from rolling all the way down the front of the green,” he said. “Taking advantage of that is what it takes to win tournaments.” Zalatoris finished the 2020 TPC Colorado Championship with a combined 15-under score of 273, edging out Johnson by a single point and beating fellow contenders Taylor Pendrith, Stephan Jaeger, Callum Tarren and Erik Barnes by two shots. The Colorado win certainly put Zalatoris on his current trajectory, and he credited his coaches for that allimportant turning point in his career – with big plans for 2021 and beyond. “These past two and a half years working with Josh Gregory and Troy Denton and just sticking to the process … It’s nice to see if finally pay off,” he said. “This (was) my first win as a professional on any level, so it’s pretty nice.”

Five Title Contenders To Watch JARED WOLFE A 33-year-old veteran with two wins this season and an inside track to one of the 25 PGA TOUR cards which will be awarded in August. Dipped in form following a win last September but has trended up recently with the season’s closing stretch on the horizon. He ﬁnished T10 here last year. STEPHAN JAEGER The 32-year-old native of Munich, Germany continues to lead the Korn Ferry Tour points standings; he’s come tantalizingly close to a three-win promotion to the PGA TOUR multiple times this season, and could get over the hump here, as he ﬁnished T3 last year.

NICK HARDY Another one of last year’s high finishers (T7, to be exact), the former University of Illinois star is on the verge of securing a PGA TOUR card for this fall. The 25-yearold has an array of top-10s this season, is well positioned in the Korn Ferry Tour points standings, and is returning to a course which clearly suits his game. ERIK BARNES The only player in the field with top-10s in both editions of this event, Barnes finished T7 in 2019 and T3 in 2020. The 33-year-old could get a late push started for PGA TOUR status with another high finish at TPC Colorado.

TYSON ALEXANDER A 32-year-old who won on the Korn Ferry Tour for the first time this year, Alexander is on the bubble forming at the back end of the Korn Ferry Tour points standings and needs to put together a run. This week seems like a logical place to start, as he finished solo ninth here in 2020. Even if you don’t know tons about golf, you’ll get swept up in the excitement at the TPC Colorado Championship July 5-11 at Heron Lakes in Berthoud. It’s part of the national Korn Ferry Tour featuring the PGA’s next big stars. “This event is all about advancement – advancing our professionals to the next level of golf. More than 80 percent of the players on the PGA tour started on the Korn Ferry Tour,” says Alexandra “Alex” Baldwin, president of the Korn Ferry PGA Tour. Alumni of the Korn Ferry Tour have included such notables as Justin Thomas, David Duval, Bubba Watson and Jason Day. Will Zalatoris, winner of last July’s TPC Colorado Championship, went on to

place second at the 2021 Masters Tournament. “TPC Colorado provides an extraordinary backdrop for the event, a beautiful location to watch these young men compete. We get them in the pipeline for the PGA and we are happy to be playing in Colorado,” says Baldwin, the ﬁrst woman to head one of the PGA’s six tours. Restricted last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s TPC Colorado Championship will welcome spectators – up to 30,000 in all on the course’s 200 acres. Ticket options include the GoodAny-Day Ticket and the All-Week Ticket offering access to the practice round (Tuesday), Pro-Am Tournament (Wednesday), and four days of TPC

Colorado Championship competition (ThursdaySunday). “This event is designed to welcome families with tons of experiences for kids on the course,” says Drew Blass, Tournament Director for the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes. The Citywide Banks Junior Activity Area offers giveaways, junior golf credentials, giant Legos, coloring sheets and an opportunity to write notes to the tour players. “In The Birdie Ball area kids get to try out clubs and hit giant inﬂatable targets including a T-Rex. Older kids and parents have an area for chipping where they can score points and keep score,” Blass says. The event’s familyfriendly areas include the June 27, 2021

Visit Loveland Cool Zone where attendees can get out of the sun and chill in the water mister is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the weekend. Because the thought of trudging to 18 holes in the sun may be less than appealing to some fans, the tournament will feature a shuttle trolley system to convey guests. “It’s nice not to have to walk the whole course,” he says. Since 2019 – when the tournament last had

spectators – TPC Colorado has added more shaded viewing areas and decks where it is easy to view the action. Some ticket packages include a range of food and beverage choices. At the top end are tickets to the expansive new clubhouse which opened last year but will ﬁnally be used fully in 2021. With its 15,000-squarefeet patio overlooking ﬁve holes of golf, it’s the most comfortable spot to watch

as 156 players vie for a $600,000 purse on the 7991yard, par 72 course with panoramic views of the Front Range. The tournament could not take place without a multitude of golf-loving volunteers on hand to welcome and guide attendees. “We will have more than 700 volunteers from 14 states, but the Northern Colorado community including Loveland, Longmont, Berthoud and Fort Collins has really stepped up for the majority of volunteers,” says Drew Blass. Proceeds from the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes benefit a rainbow of local groups. In the tournament’s first two years proceeds have benefitted the Berthoud Community Library, Realities for Children, United Way of Laramie County, PGA/ USGA Girls Golf, UC Health Foundation and others.

“We are thrilled to be part of the community and the tournament beneﬁts many organizations in Northern Colorado,” says Alex Baldwin of the Korn Ferry PGA Tour.

By Shelley Widhalm for TPC Colorado Five elite golf players don’t have to work their way into the professional ranks this year, getting a straight shot at the Korn Ferry Tour’s TPC Colorado Championship through the new PGA TOUR University. “This is a really cool, unique opportunity that historically has never been had,” said Brendan von Doehren, senior director of tournament and membership affairs for the PGA

(Professional Golfers’ Association) TOUR in Ponte Verda Beach, Fla. The PGA TOUR University is a program and a division within PGA TOUR founded June 1, 2020, that provides top collegiate golf players (NCAA Division I) with direct access to professional golf. The inaugural class ﬁnished at the end of May with the top players awarded varying levels of playing access to tours operated under the PGA TOUR umbrella. “It provides an opportunity for

the best college players and golfers to have a start in professional golf,” von Doehren said. “We think this is going to be transformational for our business as well as the greater game of golf.” NCAA Division I collegiate golfers across the nation can compete for one of 450 spots in the PGA TOUR University during their senior year of college. They are eligible for the PGA TOUR University Ranking List when they complete four years of college or three years through early graduation. “The PGA TOUR University has its ranking system, which ranks all 450 players in the country,” von Doehren said. The top ranked players are selected based on their performance at college events and are drafted into the program, similar to how college basketball players are drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA). At the end of their senior year, players ranked in the top five slots have the opportunity to compete in the TPC Colorado Korn Ferry, which this year is July 5-11 at TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes in Berthoud. The tour is a developmental tour to land a spot to compete in the PGA TOUR, the main organizer of professional men’s golf tours. The five TPC Colorado qualifiers are

among the top 15 players who received membership in the Korn Ferry after competing in the stroke play at the NCAA Championship, a 72-hole event May 31 at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Their ranking gave them Korn Ferry Tour membership and exempt status into all open, full-field events through the season, as well as this year’s Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament at the conclusion of the season. Players ranking 6th to 15th receive membership into one of PGA’s international tours, including the Forme Tour, the PGA Tour Latinoamerica and the PGA Tour Series. Those tours are developmental tours for the Korn Ferry—the top five players in Forme place in the Korn Ferry the following year. “(Forme’s) a starter tour, like Triple-A Baseball,” Doehren said, explaining that the tour gives players an avenue to develop their skills and boost their ranking in professional sports. “We’re taking those players straight from college and putting them on the Korn Ferry and Forme tours.” Prior to the PGA TOUR University, amateur players qualified for professional opportunities in several ways. They could attend a qualifying school, receive sponsorship exemptions into tournaments that serve as invitations, and place in a Monday qualifier, a stroke play golf tournament held the Monday before a professional tournament that gives top players an entry. The top 15 players in the PGA TOUR University bypass all of those steps right into professional sports, where they could make several hundred thousand in the purse for one game. “We are providing direct access to these players’ first jobs,” von Doehren said. “It’s like an apprenticeship in other jobs. This is an apprenticeship to a fulltime job.” Before, players did not have that guarantee and could be an apprentice for years on end, von Doehren said “This is now that guaranteed access,” von Doehren said. “They’re still taking a chance, win or lose, but they have the guaranteed opportunity to make money.” June 27, 2021

A plateau creates the first landing and sets up this open, downhill hole. A combination of stacked sod-wall pot bunkers along with larger bunkers, define various landings and options for the second shot. A narrow drainage swale flowing across the front edge, and the shallow depth of the green will require players to be precise with their approach. The hazard sneaks around behind the right half of the green requiring a little more attention on approach shots. Hole locations on the left half of the green are backstopped by a high ridge. Ending up with a hanging lie in the rough, will create additional concerns as players look down at a shallow green running away from them, ending up in the hazard below the front edge of the green.

The tees are perched on a bluff above the natural lake, giving players a view of the largest green surface on the golf course. The main feature of the green is a deep swale cutting across the middle creating three different areas for hole locations. The front plateau is shallow and will require a shorter yet precise shot to keep the ball on it for a birdie opportunity. The swale itself is located along the bottom will collect tee shots that are close. The back plateau is the largest area but is surrounded on three sides by water. A nerveless tee shot will be required to get all the way back onto that peninsula. For those still trying to ease into the round there is ample room short right of the green. Be careful with the chip as the green runs away from the player towards the lake.

This hole wraps around the lake with rolling ground that extends off of the high ridge to the west. The change in elevation adds a vertical June 27, 2021

dimension as one of the many options. Players can hit anything from driver to seven iron off the tee. The scorecard yardage measures the hole as a dogleg left, but the heroic shot would be played straight at the green if the wind is favorable. There are two “alleys” available to utilize while trying to reach the green. The beginning of the rock wall just left of the cross bunker puts the player’s tee shot on a ﬂat narrow piece of fairway that should allow the ball to run up onto the green. The players using the more forward tees, playing up and over the hill just right of the cross bunker should catch the backside downslope that will also direct a ball down onto the green. For those who play more conservatively, lay-up positioning will be important if they want to have a view of the green on their second shot. The further away from the edge of the lake they play, the less they will see on their second shot. There is a lot of fairway to play to on this hole. The key is to avoid the three sod-wall pot bunkers with the tee shot.

There are five holes located in this central valley. The first will be the long, fourth hole. The fairway has ample width, but is defined along the left side by a deep arroyo and on the right side by a pair of deep bunkers. Players need to identify the hole location to determine their best angle of approach. The green sits at the foot of a hill with a large bunker wrapping around the left side. Hole locations on the left of the green will be tough to get close to unless the tee shot has been positioned near the fairway bunkers on the right. Hole locations to the right side of the green will give players a bit more latitude. Shots played at the green from farther left in the fairway will need to cross the green side bunker, but will have the length of the green to work with as these longer approach shots run out. The fairway wraps around the green so that players who don’t hit or hold the green will have shot options.

With a favorable wind this green can be reached in two shots, but both shots will need to be superiorly executed. The tee shot is played to an expansive fairway with a sharp ridge splitting it into a narrower “high road” and a broad, low road. The green is potentially reachable from either location as the hole is relatively straight. Approaching the green from the high road will give the player a view of the green and will provide the best angle to funnel the ball onto it. Golfers playing a three shot par 5 will have several choices. The fairway swings far to the left wrapping around the large bunker fronting the green. The small green has challenges around it, including a steep fall-off along the back left and hidden pot bunkers off the back and right sides. Players can choose from nearly 90 degrees of angles to approach this green, depending upon the hole location.

Elevated tees give players a great view of the hole as well as the entire Front Range. Dynamic bunkers line the hole from the right side with an additional bunker located on the left side, just short of the green. The wide fairway sitting within these bunkers and just short of the green looks inviting even with the small green of 5,000 square feet - the smallest on the golf course. The green drops to the left on the front half and to the right on the back half so players will need to proceed with caution and precision. Position in the fairway will be very important for the approach shot. The deep pot bunker fronting the green will also play a substantial role in helping players formulate a plan of attack here. The green is reachable in one stroke if the wind is down or out of the east, but that shot is high risk/high reward. Positioning the tee shot adjacent to the left side bunker will open a direct shot to the green without having to navigate the deep pot bunker.

Having played to the lowest part of the golf course, players start the journey back up with a semi-blind tee shot. Two hills frame the fairway, leading players to the green to set up their tee shot. From the landing area, players will face another semi-blind shot on the approach. This shot should be played onto the low “bluff” fronting the green. This will allow the ball to bounce and roll onto the green surface which falls away and to the left.

The eighth hole is the most sitespeciﬁc hole on the golf course. This relatively short par 3 is played on a narrow, natural peninsula lined by large Cottonwood trees. The peninsula extends out into Lonetree Reservoir and as players get out to the green they are greeted with their ﬁrst full view of the lake. It is here that the proximity and natural beauty of the course presents itself. The 50-yard-deep green with its low rolling contours will provide plenty of variety for various hole locations. Natural wetlands line the fairway which is no wider than the green itself. The dry ground between the tees and the green, is the only safe place on this hole besides the green.

The ﬁnal hole of the front nine bends strongly from left to right around the grove of Cottonwood trees, through a beautiful valley. Shaped bunkers and stacked sod wall bunkers give players a few options on their tee shot. A strong bend to the right can play short if players can place their tee shot in the fairway between the bunkers. The shallow green sits on the bank of Lonetree Reservoir with a backdrop of Long’s Peak. A shorter iron, used with precision, is needed on the approach shot.

The natural undulating ground sets up a variety of options off the tee, while the pot bunkers and Lonetree Reservoir enhance the setting. The larger green tempts players to try to reach and hold it with their tee shot providing an eagle opportunity. Players not inclined to try for the green with their tee shot have plenty of other options. A well-played shot to the top of the plateau in the fairway adjacent to the pot bunkers will leave players with a full shot into the green with a short wedge. A slightly more aggressive play would be to sling a longer left-to-right shot off of the second bunker trying to catch the downslope that will advance the ball to the bottom of the green. This takes the bunkers out of play for the short approach to the green.

The only bunkerless, waterless hole on the golf course, the fairway and green are full of rolling contours that could take shots away from their intended line, feed an errant shot onto the green or back towards the fairway. The hole plays softly uphill from tee to green which disguises some of the movement and subtlety. A strong ridge running along the center of the fairway creates two options to approach the green. This same ridge continues into and through the green. Players will need to line up their approach shot angle with the hole location on the green. Correct navigation through these contours will allow the player to control the run-out of their shots.

Continue the climb to the highest point on the golf course besides the clubhouse area. The high plateau gives players a spectacular view of the course and the Front Range. Access to the green with the short approach shot will require precision and planning. The shallow and wide green, falls away on both sides, creating the need to approach various hole

locations from the proper angle to have any chance at a birdie or par. The tee shot must navigate a group of stacked sod wall pot bunkers to set up the short approach shot. Playing out to the left will remove the bunkers from play, but this approach will become increasingly blind as players end up behind the high ridge to the left of the landing area.

LONGER STILL HOLE 13—PAR 5 Tour Black Gold Blue

The longest hole on the course, this is intended to be a full three-shot par ﬁve even for the best players. The tee shot is wide open and slopes softly from right to left with the dogleg of the hole, allowing players to swing away as they set up the important second shot. Upon arriving in the landing area, the players will face “Hell Bunker”. Laying up short of “Hell Bunker” on the second shot will leave players with a third shot approaching 200 yards in length. Players will need to club up to on their second shot to reach a shorter or more comfortable yardage for their approach shot. Hell Bunker has three distinct hollows with stacked sod wall bunkering, each one 40 yards further down the hole than the previous wall. The rest of the bunker is a combination of strips of sand, fescue islands and peninsulas. Ending up in the bunker could leave players with a shot that could be advanced toward the green or a lay-up shot that needs to be put back in play wherever possible. The green sits on an angle to the approach line of play, guarded front right by a pot bunker and front left by a steep slope. The green pitches towards the players, but an approach shot played a bit too long will put you off the back of the green in low undulating ground.

Players will need to be careful not to over swing on the tee shot as hitting the fairway is critical to opening up the full range of options for the second shot. The green sits high among the hills, a partial punchbowl and peninsula as it peeks out from behind a high, fronting hill. The large green has distinct movement on the surface, making it imperative to find the correct area of the green relative to the hole. Playing a fade up and over the hill and pot bunker to the left, will likely funnel the ball onto the green. A slight pull to the left, and the player will find themselves in a shallow fairway with several options for the next shot. The easiest hole location to see from the landing area, on the western point of the green, might be the hardest one to get close to. The green is shallow on this end and a miscalculation short, long or to the right will leave the player below the hole, 20-30 yards away by the time the ball stops rolling down the steep embankment. Playing the hole as a three shot par five might be the prudent play. It will be easier for players to navigate the challenges around the green with a short iron or wedge in their hands. Carefully lay-up your position by avoiding the deep, larger, pot bunkers.

The 17th hole heads south and plays downhill from tee to green. The slight dogleg left is strategically straightforward. The inside corner of the dogleg is well-guarded with bunkers, undulating slopes and fescue. The front right pot bunker, dictates that players should try to place their tee shots on the left side of the fairway close to the bunkers at the green. This will minimize the need to carry the green side bunker with a long shot approach. The green is framed by a moderately high mound to the left and a low slope on the right. The fairway wraps around the green giving players who miss the surface with their approach shots a variety of ways to try and make par.

This hole sets up beautifully with tees elevated up on a high ridge. Players can view the entire hole and green surface sitting down in the valley below. The large yardage number will be offset by the downhill tee shot and the eastern orientation of the hole with westerly winds. A long bunker on the right side of the hole sets up the green. A ridge runs from the tees up the left side to the front

Players feel true tournament pressure as they tee off adjacent to the clubhouse, hitting their shot to the raised green on the peninsula along McNeil Reservoir. The green allows for distinctly different hole locations to really change up how this hole will play. The low shelf on the right point of the green is tiny, but players who ﬁnd the right portion of the slope will watch their ball roll down the slope towards, and maybe into, the hole. The shortest hole location, at the front left, is one of the more treacherous hole locations. Two deep pot bunkers frame this part of the green and the quicker slope will

put a premium on keeping the tee shot below the hole. The fat part of the green is probably the safe play to avoid a large number late in the round. With a wedge or short iron, it’ll be very tempting to try and hit a tight shot and become an instant star.

Playing slightly uphill from tee to green, this hole will challenge players on their tee shot and approach shot. The fairway is wide, with a slight slope running diagonally across the landing area creating a plateau to the right and a lower bench on the left. A small pot bunker cut into the upslope defines your two fairway options. The long approach will need to carry or avoid the deep pot bunker just short of the green. The green is framed by slopes and challenges. A slight roll is located short right of the green and extends across the approach area making an approach from the left fairway preferable. A sharp drop-off along the left edge of the green makes the left side hole locations difficult to get close to unless the player approaches from the right. A bunker behind the green will put a premium on distance control with the long approach shot, and a slight low back right of the green will also collect shots that run-out. The green is larger in size with subtle slopes throughout. A player finding the green with their second shot will have a good birdie opportunity to finish up the round.
