Jose Quiroz Yanez dreamed of college while living in Guanajuato, Mexico, but never considered it more than a dream because of his family’s financial struggles. After moving to Longmont with his mom and two younger siblings when he was 9, he began to believe the opportunities here would give him a real chance to be the first in his family to go to college. Now, as a member of the secgram, he’s headed to Harvard ond class graduating from SkyUniversity in the fall with a fullline High School’s P-TECH pro- ride scholarship.
Through the P-TECH, or Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools, program,
Quiroz Yanez has already earned an associate’s degree in computer science along with his high school diploma. But he still wants a traditional college experience — and his plans include going far beyond an associate’s degree. In his first year at Harvard, he wants to explore some of his passions, including film. His second year, when Harvard students declare their concentration, or major, he plans to start preparing for medical school. He wants to specialize in neurology. Please see YANEZ, 12

CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS St. Vrain Valley parents, schools navigate open enrollment in a pandemic
This article published originally on Dec. 27. BY AMY BOUNDS STAFF WRITER
Local schools are flying drones through the hallways, cueing up video footage from previous school years and enlisting students as they create virtual tour videos and host virtual open houses to spotlight their schools during open enrollment season. St. Vrain Valley schools switched to remote-only learning in November as coronavirus cases surged, about the same time that families, in a normal year, would start visiting schools to decide if they wanted to enroll in a school outside their neighborhood attendance area. That meant schools had to get creative in highlighting their schools. For parents, they’re making decisions without in-person visits and while still trying to navigate the current year as schools rotate through in-person, hybrid and remote learning options in response to changing coronavirus case numbers, guidelines and recommendations. St. Vrain Valley’s official open enrollment window was from Dec. 1 to Dec. 15. District spokeswoman Kerri McDermid said the deadline helps schools plan for the upcoming year, but open enrollment will continue to be available as long as a school has space. “In most cases, we are able to accommodate all open enrollment requests, even if they are received after the deadline,” she said. Families open enroll in large numbers in both districts, mainly in transition years: kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade. In St. Vrain Valley this fall, 45% of students were attending schools outside their neighborhood attendance areas, most through open enrollment from within and outside the school district. That percentage also includes students placed by the district in specific programs and homeless students. So far, Boulder Valley is seeing fewer families request to open enroll. As of Dec. 15, the district had
to think about next year in school,” he said. At least one local charter school, Twin Peaks Academy in Longmont, was an exception to the virtual tour trend, offering small in-person tours to prospective families. The K-12 school has provided full-time, in-person classes to elementary students since the school year started, as well as in-person classes for middle and high school students on a hybrid schedule. The in-person option gave Twin Peaks, which relies solely on open enrollment as a charter school, an enrollment boost this fall. The school gained 80 more students than the previous school year. In past years, Twin Peaks’ enrollment had been declining. Eliza Mason, who has an incoming kindergartner, Timothy Hurst / Staff Photographer started looking into schools two years ago. CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS Leadership Academy seniors develop capstone projects

wanted to share her love of civics with elementary students, hoping to engage them early after her own not-so-great social studies Silver Creek High School experiences prior to high senior Sydney Walker school.
While she really wanted to teach her lessons directly in classrooms, that wasn’t possible because of coronavirus restrictions. So she instead made animated videos about civics
for elementary students, along with posting about civics topics on social media for high schoolers. “I felt like my project could give them ways to learn in a more fun way,”

she said. “Civics is a topic that everybody needs to learn about. As racial injustice happens in our world, more young people are getting exposed to it. They have the right to know how the justice system works.” Walker and the other 20 seniors in Silver Creek’s Leadership Academy faced an added challenge this year as they developed their capstone projects. The uncertainties of the pandemic meant they needed to develop largely virtual projects — and be flexible as the rules changed. Silver Creek created its Leadership Academy in 2009. Students start freshmen year with a class on foundations of leadership, then take a cultural intelligence class as sophomores and a community leadership class as juniors. Senior year, the focus is on capstone projects, which this year includes internships, fundraisers and education efforts. Community service is another component of the
program — and was another challenge this school year as in-person options were no longer available. Sloan Alber, president of the Leadership Academy’s student ambassador team, made strengthening the ambassador program her capstone project. Finding new community service opportunities and leadership activities was part of her work. Many events were canceled, had to held virtually or had to reconfigured to follow social distancing rules, she said. The recent induction ceremony for next’s year’s Leadership Academy freshmen, for example, was held as a “honk-and-wave” drive through. For community service, the main focus was fundraising, including raising money to replace a stolen bike for a boy in a nearby neighborhood. They also created birthday bags for homeless students. “There were things we could do by ourselves, but still contribute,” Alber said.

Neil Shupe named SVVSD teacher of the year BY ANNIE MEHL STAFF WRITER
Neil Shupe, who has taught everything from biology to advanced placement chemistry to, now, advanced manufacturing, received the St. Vrain Valley School District teacher
of the year award during Friday night’s Tribute to Teachers. “I went to college, and in the first semester, I struggled and failed a few of my classes,” Shupe said in a prerecorded video aired during the virtual awards ceremony. “I really just needed to get some extra credits. And so, I worked with one of my chemistry
professors at the elementary school, and we were just working with the students doing these little science experiments, really fun stuff.” From there, Shupe said, he began to realize what he was truly passionate about. “I love working with kids,” said Shupe, who teaches at the Career
Development Center in Longmont. “(It) really just opened that door for me to say ‘Yeah this is what I’m good at. This is what I enjoy.’ ” Shupe is now in his 13th year of teaching. St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation on Friday held the annual event virtually. Despite the change in venue, commu-
nity participation for teacher nominations increased by 50% from 2020, said Josh Atherton, the foundation’s executive director. “I think our community realized that our teachers need to be recognized during challenging times,” he said during the event, streamed on YouTube. Academy, said Shupe goes above and beyond to ensure his students understand the materials being taught. “He’s super engaging,” she said. “He wants to sit down, take the time to explain something that’s either wrong or how to better fix it. He doesn’t just come in, sit down and do it for you.”

allowed opponents to score an average of just 38.7 points prior to Sunday, 23-9 in the fourth to close out the victory. Senior guard Marcus Santiago scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help Mead pull away. “It was a total team effort and if we don’t all show up,
we don’t win the game,” Knudsen said. “We were playing for our sophomore, Nick Basson, who we lost but it was nice that he was able to be here on the bench. We did it for our coach. We did it for our school. And it was a good feeling to win one for all those five seniors we had
on the team last year.” Still playing without Basson (10.8 ppg) since he was hospitalized after suffering a stroke last Friday, the Mavericks couldn’t have picked a better night to play possibly their best all-around game of the season. Mead senior Will Tenore
led the Mavericks, who shot 49.1% from the field, with eight rebounds. The Mavericks also went 8-for18 from behind the 3-point arc and held the Indians well under their 56.3-point scoring average. “This is our first team title as a new school and I still can’t help but think this should have happened last year, and I think a lot of people would agree,” Mead head coach Darin Reese said. “We just loved that group of seniors we had last year and this is as much theirs as it is everybody else’s. Everybody went through adversity this past year and this 2021 group is pretty special. There’s a ton of satisfaction knowing just how great the Mead community is and that they know this is theirs.” Ashden Oberg led Montrose, which has not won a state championship in 70 years, with 13 points and Luke Hutto had a doubledouble with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

YANEZ from page 1 ”I’m really interested in the behavioral side of neuroscience,” he said. “There’s just so much that we don’t know about the brain and how it functions. I want to find out more.” When he enrolled in third grade at Spangler Elementary, he said, he missed his father who stayed in Mexico, didn’t speak English, and was “very scared.” But he
learned fast, testing out of English-as-a-second-language services in fifth grade. “I always kept that goal of going to college in the back of my mind after I passed that milestone that I was fluent in English,” he said. In middle school at Timberline PK-8, he earned several academic honors and was awarded “top boy”
in eighth grade. He also applied to Skyline’s P-TECH program, which he started as a freshman. “It’s essentially a free associate’s degree,” he said. “Computer science is in every field. I knew if I joined the program, it would open up a lot of doors in my future.” While taking college level classes in high school was challenging, he said,
there was also lots of support from teachers, counselors and classmates. “They really care about us succeeding, and they do everything to help us,” he said. “There are so many resources available to us. It’s not competitive with the other students. We’re learning together as we go.” When he was applying to Harvard, he said, he worried the college admissions officers might not consider him competitive. While he took a slate of honors classes plus four Advanced Placement classes, he wasn’t sure how his P-TECH classes would stack up. “My admissions officer reassured me that they look at your application based on you and your situation,” he said. He has persevered
through the pandemic and a senior year that “looked nothing like I thought it would,” applying for colleges and scholarships with mainly virtual help from his counselor, Louise March. “To say he has grit and determination is an understatement,” March said. “He is quiet, humble and unassuming, but that does not stop him from self-advocating and making sure he tackles every barrier in his way. Yes, he is an academic scholar, but what truly sets Jose apart from the crowd is his kindness and his love for his family.” Quiroz Yanez almost didn’t apply to Harvard. In December, his grandfather were diagnosed with COVID-19 and hospitalized. He died in January, shortly before the Harvard application was due.
“All I wanted to do was be with my family,” he said at a recent school board meeting where he was honored for his accomplishments. “My mother, she told me my grandfather would always speak very proudly of me. She said he would want you to do it — not for him, not for me, but for yourself.” With that encouragement, he applied, adding, “I do know that wherever (my grandfather) is, he’s proud of me.” He also thanked his mom for all her sacrifices, saying she would sometimes go to bed with an empty stomach so her children could eat. “She’s an amazing woman,” he said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without her full support and having her by my side fighting for my dreams.”

CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS HADDAD from page 1
they have also become highly engaged citizens who remain focused on building stronger, healthier communities and advancing our society. The Class of 2021 also enrolled in a record number of Advanced Placement exams, International Baccalaureate courses, and concurrent enrollment college courses, giving them the opportunity to start their postsecondary education
with approximately 32,000 college credits on their transcripts, potentially saving their families over $8.1 million in tuition costs. Our graduating seniors have also received numerous recognitions for their academic achievements, talents, and innovative ideas, including Boettcher Scholarships, Daniels Scholarships, National Merit Scholarships, state athletic championships, All-State
musician honors, and thousands of college acceptance letters from institutions across the United States including many Ivy League schools, military academies, and other highly competitive colleges and universities. We are incredibly proud of what our students have accomplished in a time of increasing academic rigor and the highest expectations of leadership, community, and citizenship.
Public education is one of the most powerful systems for driving positive change in our society. Across the United States, approximately 90 percent of our children attend public schools — and in the St. Vrain Valley, that percentage is even higher. With the future success of our community and nation dependent on the quality of our public schools, we have no greater responsibility
than ensuring every child in our community receives a rigorous, engaging, and high-quality education. To this end, it is an honor to stand alongside our Board of Education, teachers, staff, parents, administrators, and other community partners to celebrate the Class of 2021 and recognize our students’ high levels of success. Finally, I want to share my heartfelt gratitude to all
of our seniors and wish you the very best in life. Our schools will forever be strengthened by your time in our community — you are truly a class of compassionate, dedicated, intelligent, and outstanding young adults who will boldly lead our country into the future. Don Haddad, Ed.D., is superintendent of St. Vrain Valley Schools.
WHEN YOU’RE READY, WE ARE TOO.
