Fun for the Family: Nine Things to Do this Summer in and Around Boulder County

GO FOR A CAMPING TRIP

An overnight stay amid the trees may be just what you need to relieve all that Zoom fatigue. Scheduling a family camping trip can be a great way to unplug and reconnect with nature. Thankfully, Colorado’s backyard has plenty of great campgrounds to pick from. Many park services have already opened up campsite reservations for summer 2021, so now is a good time to plan that trip given the rise in popularity of camping amid COVID-19. For a glamping type of experience, head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park in Golden, where you can book cabins and yurts with a two-night stay minimum. The park also has tent sites, backcountry tent sites, and sites with electrical hook-ups that accommodate RVs and campers. The park is a favorite for wildlife photographers. Plus, there are several stocked fishing ponds, trails for mountain biking, and dog-friendly hiking trails to keep the whole family (Fido included) entertained. Another great campsite to put on the bucket list is Pawnee Campground, which is just five miles west of Ward and has a total of 47 campsites for tents, campers, trailers or RVs. The campground is near Brainard Lake and campers here can enjoy the hiking trails that wind through the scenic Indian Peaks Wilderness. For intrepid types who are up for a challenge, you can conquer a 14er (Longs Peak!) and then slumber at the base of it at Longs Peak Campground in Rocky Mountain National Park. There

are 26 tent-only sites in the small, forested campground. Pro tip: Prep for your camping trip with a stop at Neptune Mountaineering, which has tents, down sleeping bags, and cookware for campfire cooking.

MAKE A SPLASH AT WATER WORLD

Water World is one of the country’s largest family water parks, with 50 unique attractions spread out over 64 acres. The water slides, wave pool, lazy river and other attractions are reopening for summer 2021. Because the park will be operating at limited capacity, guests will be required to purchase tickets and select a visit date and scheduled arrival window in advance and online. Only a limited number of tickets will be available daily at the park ticket windows. The water park’s surf simulator will make you feel like you’re on a beach vacation.

TAKE A HIKE

Open Space and Mountain Parks’ 155 miles of trails provides lots of opportunities for hiking in Boulder. A favorite are the network of trails in Chautauqua Park. With a variety of trails in the park that vary in distance and elevation gain, you can tailor a hike for your family. Afterwards, bring some yard games and enjoy a picnic in the park.

Grab some movie snacks and pop some popcorn and enjoy an outdoor movie night in your own backyard. If you want to make this a regular summer night ritual, you’ll need to do a little upfront investing by purchasing an outdoor projector. (Pro tip: Pay

Now, as summer approaches, the warmer weather and extended daylight makes it even easier to enjoy Colorado’s great outdoors, and to do so in a safe way. Also, with the widespread rollout of vaccines, events and attractions are making comebacks in summer 2021, while incorporating social distance protocols. Here are nine fun, safe and socially distant ways to enjoy the greater Boulder County area this summer.

VISIT THE BUTTERFLY PAVILION

A vacation to the tropics may be out of the picture this summer. But, you can visit a tropical oasis in … Westminster. Here, you can walk among hundreds of monarch butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion’s indoor tropical conservatory, Wings of the Tropics, hold the famous “Rosie the tarantula” and learn about the coral reef. The Butterfly Pavilion offers lots of kid-friendly programming as well.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Summer is a magnificent time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park. The wildflowers are blooming from late June to early August and the rivers and waterfalls are rushing with recent snow melt. The park has more than 355 miles of hiking trails. If you’re hoping to spot some wildlife, elk make appearances most frequently at dusk and dawn when they’re feeding. Bighorn sheep are commonly seen at Sheep Lakes from May through mid-August. And, moose frequent willow thickets along the Colorado River in the Kawuneeche Valley on the park’s west side.

The beloved Shakespeare Festival will return in summer 2021 at the University of Colorado. Enjoy a

THE DENVER ZOO

With more than 3,000 animals spanning 400-plus species, the Denver Zoo is worth a day trip (or many day trips!). New “up close look” experiences allow you to “buy out” a session for up to six people from your pod to enjoy an intimate experience with the zoo’s giraffes, llamas, sloths, porcupines, parrots, camels and more. Also, Stingray Cove is a new interactive experience that gives you the chance to touch and feed gentle stingrays as they swim, swoop and glide about in their 15,000-gallon habitat that they share with friendly bamboo and bonnethead sharks. Planting Seeds: Nurturing learning, health and happiness through gardening together

on’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant. Words famously penned by author Robert Louis Stevenson resonate metaphorically, but a literal interpretation is equally true. And, as soft spring blooms unfold into summer sunshine, examples increasingly abound. To see them, look only to the gardens, and see the ways those who tend them flourish. Gardening is renowned for countless benefits, from easing stress and lifting mood to increasing physical activity and much, much more. Sharing gardening with children means enjoying all these health and wellness benefits, together. It’s also an invaluable opportunity for learning engagement, imparting wisdom in areas of nature and science, environmental stewardship, and food journeys, to name a few. “Gardening with kids is so amazing,” says Megan Reynoso, program manager at Growing Gardens, a beloved Boulder nonprofit whose mission is to enrich community through sustainable urban agriculture and education programming. “Through gardening, children get to learn where their food comes from and how it grows into what they are familiar seeing in the grocery store. When a student comes to the garden and learns that carrots grow underground, and they

have an opportunity to pick up a carrot, wash it off, and take a bite, it’s magical. They have a spark in their eye from learning something new, plus a new appreciation for their food and where it comes from.” At Growing Gardens, summer camps offer students ages 5 to 11 the opportunity to tend gardens, explore through art and science, and enjoy making tasty snacks from harvest bounties. Such special experiences are impactful in the moment, and for a lifetime. The best part is, the sparkle they inspire can be cultivated in your own backyard. Here, Reynoso and team share tips on how to make the most of your garden, for your family.

GETTING STARTED

Kids are constantly observing and learning from the world around them, Reynoso says, making the garden a perfect place to learn basic gardening skills, but also to connect with the environment and explore new things using the senses. Before jumping in, Reynoso recommends setting some basic safety boundaries and gather tools appropriate to the ages of the participants. Other than that, get excited about learning and exploring together. “A garden is a special place because it’s one where you can get muddy, dirty, rip things out, and do things students don’t regularly get to do in the classroom,” she says.

through gardening with younger children is focus on the very basic needs of a plant, Reynoso says. “A plant needs water, air, soil, sunlight, space, and love,” she says. “This is easily grasped by younger students. When we learn about the importance of soil, we also get to use our hands and explore our vermicomposting system – worms.” Breaking down gardening to the basics and keeping it very hands-on allows it to be accessible to all ages, Reynoso explains. Preschoolers – as well as gardeners of all ages – will love sprouting potatoes, shelling beans, painting with plant parts, and smelling herbs. Gardens further offer perfect opportunity to reinforce learning for elementary students, extending popular children’s literature like Stone Soup or Planting a Rainbow, sorting seeds, labeling plots, and making plans

“When working with older students, it’s easy to provide the basics and then continue to add more and more details, vocabulary, and learning,” Reynoso says. “There’s so much to explore and learn about plants, their needs, insects, soil, biodiversity and so much more! There is always more to learn with gardening.” Older students can handle more responsibility, drawing up plans, researching plants, and perhaps starting a garden bed of their own or offering service to the community. If space is short, container gardening offers the joy of planning and ownership within a confined area. In addition to intellectual learning, students will increasingly benefit from the activity outdoors as well. “Physically working in a garden can be hard work!” Reynoso says. “You’re outside, pulling weeds, watering plants, turning over soil. This is a great way for students to move their bodies and get outdoors in the sunlight.”

FOR EVERYONE

Whether you’re five or 95, a garden does a body (and mind) good. Nurturing a garden encourages patience, mindfulness, connection with and appreciation for nature, responsibility and care. Sharing these connections as a family – what could be better? “There is a connection between digging in the dirt and happiness,” Reynoso says. “Gardening and taking care of plants is great for learning and physical health – and for your emotional wellbeing, too.” Growing Gardens host a variety of summer camps and school day off classes throughout the year! As a change-of-pace meal, Lacroix suggests assembling what she calls “graze boards” – essentially, charcuterie platters for kids. “You can pick out platters or make small cutting boards, and a ton of stuff – meats, cheeses, veggies, dips, breads. Kids can put together some uncommon combinations, but it’s all good stuff,” Lacroix says. “Parents are always talking about health and trying to get their kids to eat healthy. With choice it defuses that ‘Eat that bowl of lettuce and you can have

Summers are all about salads but consider personalizing them to get your child excited about greens. “Listen, there are plenty of foods my kid doesn’t like. But when she tells me she really likes grapefruit and avocados, then I know I can make a butter lettuce salad with grapefruit and avocado and she will eat it. She thinks it’s fun to eat flowers and sunflower seeds are her favorite seed or nut right now,” Lacroix says. To make her daughter’s favorite salad, Kate Lacroix lets Milla pick the ingredients for Mom to cut up. Milla assembles the salad the way she wants it. “Instead of ‘Eat your

Parents often complain that kids refuse to even try new tastes. “A lot of times kids don’t want to try new vegetables and fruits because they feel the pieces are too thick and big. It’s textural. But, if you cut paper-thin slices of apples, of serve translucent carrot shavings, it gets their palates used to grown up foods,” Lacroix says. Best of all, you avoid engaging in “vegetable wars,” she says.

ith the arrival of hot summer evenings, it’s time to change up your school year cooking habits… even tacos every Tuesday. “It’s good to get out of the old pattern of sitting down every night and having the starch and protein and whatever on the plate, especially,” says Kate Lacroix. Active for years in Boulder’s restaurant community, Lacroix is the owner of Stocked, a new business that helps women save money on their family food bills and invest those savings. Summer is also a golden opportunity to bring your kids into the kitchen. Food and cooking can teach kids important things but – YAWN – that sounds a lot like school. It works better if you put kids in charge of as much of the process as you can. Kate Lacroix is also the mother of two generations of girls: Harper, 16, and Milla, 7. Lacroix admits she has learned a lot about parenting and food over the years. “I did a lot wrong with my first

child. I saw dinnertime as a task I needed to accomplish to keep us going. Now, I don’t worry about the messes and spills. What I do now takes twice as much time but the investment is worth it,” she says. “I find it’s important to bring your child into the process at every stage. So my daughter Milla helps pick what we plant. She waters the seedlings every day. She sees them grow, we bring them in and they’re in the salad,” Lacroix says.

We believe kids should be kids. Our morning camps are skills-based, with a choice of Gymnastics or Ninja camps. Our afternoon themed camps encourage imaginative play through creative themes!

Are there a few quick tips that come to mind for parental self-care? Things that don’t necessarily take much time but can make a real difference to one’s well-being? JN: The BEST and quickest selfcare activity is deep breathing. Breathing in through the nose and out of the mouth in long, slow breaths helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which quickly restores a feeling of calm and peace. Also doing an activity that brings joy can really help center oneself and connect with one’s sense of inner peace and contentment. By exercising selfcare, we calm our own nervous systems. Self-care can take many forms and is based on individual interests and needs. Examples of good self-care techniques are deep breathing, physical exercise, time in nature, time away from media and screens, yoga, meditation, etc. The pandemic has left a lot of families – especially those with small kids – with precious few activities to do outside of the house. In your work, are you seeing parents who have found this challenging?

JN: YES! This has been a major challenge for families with kids of all ages. It’s been an issue we have tried to help support through Zoom presentations with suggestions of homebound activities for kids that are low cost and engaging. I have received regular feedback throughout the pandemic from parents who are highly stressed and frustrated about how the imitations have affected their children.

Jennifer Nelson, M.Ed., Mental Health Partners. Why is self-care so important? JN: Neuroscience shows that humans develop their abilities for emotional self-regulation through connections with reliable caregivers who soothe and model in a process called “co-regulation.” Regulation is a skill that indicates the ability to not act out or lose control when experiencing a strong emotion. Emotions are contained in the part of the brain called the limbic system and the big boss in the brain that helps us control impulsive behaviors or extreme emotional expression is the prefrontal cortex. Guess when THAT is fully developed and functional? Not until about 25 years old. So until then, children depend on the adults in their life, mostly their parents, to provide this to them. We in essence lend our prefrontal cortex to them. When we actively do this, it is called co-regulation. Many children and young people have difficulties regulating their emotions and impulses. Adults often attempt to coercively regulate the behaviors of children and teens through commands, threats, and punishments. This approach invariably inflames the situation and generates resistance rather than learning. When young people have not yet learned the skills for rational self-regulation, they need the help of caring adults to calm them and help them think rationally. Co-regulation is the first step on the pathway to self-regulation. In order for parents to coregulate with our kids, we ourselves need to be regulated. This requires that we make time for self-care. By exercising selfcare, we calm our own nervous systems.

Parents, let’s honor ourselves by choosing to put ourselves first sometimes! Improve student performance with positive reinforcement

any of the students at Stride Learning’s afterschool program want to do their schoolwork, but they may not know where to start. How do they break down their assignments into manageable pieces? How do they ignore the negative feedback loop they’re caught in? And what is it exactly that they need to work on? A team of mentors at the Broomfield-based education center work one-on-one with students in middle school through college to develop their executive

function skills, employing positive reinforcement to help them succeed at school and in life. Executive function helps with planning, breaking tasks into manageable steps, and juggling several tasks at one. Students who struggle with executive functioning – such as those with ADHD and dyslexia – often receive more negative than positive feedback, but don’t know how to change their actions. “What it comes down to is educating students in a positive way, letting them know they’re bright and all learn differently,” said Kelly McGahan, administrative project staff member at Stride Learning.

Students meet with their mentors once a week during the school semester and are welcome to use the homework center at any time – they also can come back in the summer for transition courses. They start off with exercise, such as playing a sport or going on a walk, since physical movement helps develop executive function skills. “We know exercise is a miracle drug for learning, attention, memory and what we call retention, taking things from short-term to long-term memory,” said Brandon Slade, founder and chief executive officer of Slade Learning. The mentors help the students

plan out their assignments, breaking them up into daily tasks to give them the structure they need. They check in with them to make sure they’re on task and to hold them accountable, while giving them an opportunity for self-assessment. All of this is carried out through positive reinforcement, a means of building self-esteem, self-efficacy and selfworth. The focus is on the process, not the product, so they believe they’re able to learn and can identify how they best learn. Positive reinforcement involves process-oriented praise that lets students know what they did right. Maybe the student earned a C on a test – they got seven out of 10 questions correct, so congratulate them on that. Help them continue with what brought about success and figure out where they can approach studying differently for future improvement. Without that reinforcement, the student may feel discouraged or even defeated and want to give up, not knowing what it is they need to do. “It is defining what it is your praising. I’m praising you because you did well at this organizational piece,” McMahan said. “I’m also reinforcing the skill associated with it.” Positive reinforcement is best carried out when it’s immediate, specific and genuine, McMahan said, adding that it also needs to be frequent. “Be specific about what you’re praising them for. ‘Y did a really good job doing A,B,C.’ ‘Thank you for doing A,B,C,’” McMahan said.

Meeting the critical needs of local students

he 2020-21 was a school year like no other. New words popped up in our conversations – words like digital divide, pods, Zoom, supplemental learning and hotspots – and moved to the forefront of our collective consciousness. According to Allison Billings, executive director of Impact on Education, the key word was “action” in the 500-square mile Boulder Valley School District. “The school district has a wide spectrum of students,” Billings said. “Our role is to apply an equity lens to offer excellent opportunities to all children. We help by leveraging community resources for the critical needs of public school students.” A recent study by McKinsey & Company estimates that “students on average could lose five to nine months of learning by the end of June 2021. Students of color could be six to 12 months behind, compared with four to eight months for white students.” This translates to an average loss of “three months of learning in mathematics and one-and-a-half months of learning in reading.” The website, impactoneducation.org explains, “Our wide-ranging programs adapt to accommodate the shifting needs of our community. As of March 2021, dollars were used to provide: $265,000 for supplemental instruction such as targeted tutoring, ACT/SAT prep courses, funding to retake failed or incomplete coursework and instructional technology; $165,000 for emergency food distribution of nearly 2 million meals; $100,000 to eliminate child care debt and provide supervised care; $60,000 on home internet to enable access to remote learning; $12,000 for school supplies for elementary school students; $10,000 for thousands of books for students to read at home. Looking ahead, Impact on Education plans to support BVSD’s summer learning for students who have fallen behind and will continue other investments this summer, including the Summer Shuffle program which brings literacy and numeracy instruction to 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children living in public housing in Boulder County. The Crayons to Calculators program, which distributed 15,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in need in the Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District in 2020, will gear up in the coming months to ensure that all students have the supplies they need when they head back to school in August. iving with the threat of COVID has been stressful for everyone – including our kids. Which is why the YMCA of Northern Colorado is taking a proactive approach to socialemotional learning (SEL) at their camps this summer. According to Julia Capnerhurst, the executive director of school age programs and day camp for the YMCA of Northern Colorado, “Children need social-emotional skills more than ever, especially because of the pandemic and social isolation of this past year.” Capnerhurst says the pandemic has exacerbated recent spikes in youth depression, anxiety and suicide. “As the area’s largest childcare provider, we have increasingly realized that we must help our children understand and process their emotions in positive

ways.” SEL is a framework for developing the skills necessary to manage emotions, meet goals and develop empathy for others. To this end, Capnerhurst says the YMCA of Northern Colorado’s summer programming “will focus on helping kids learn how to make connections, build relationships, and enhance their time at camp with positive social experiences.” Campers, who range in age from entering kindergarten to rising ninth-graders, will have a variety of opportunities to engage develop their SEL skills at camp. That might look like participating in sharing circles, practicing positive self-talk or learning critical problem-solving skills, says Capnerhurst. “We’ll introduce coping skills to manage frustration, sadness, and stress,” she explains. “Each camp will have a cool-down area where kids can take some time to relax, try

For example, each week, one of their day camps features a different theme. Capnerhurst says during “A Wild Life on Earth” week, SEL core competencies of compassion and appreciation will be ingrained in the curriculum. “We will learn how animals and humans are all connected, and how we can help balance or disrupt different ecosystems based on our actions,” she explains. Meanwhile, Capnerhurst says that in addition to being part of the curriculum, SEL will be baked into every interaction between campers and staff members. This encompasses everything from the language they use to the way they approach behavioral issues. “We

want social emotional learning to be a part of our camp culture – not just something on our daily schedule.” While implementing SEL hasn’t required the YMCA of Northern Colorado to hire additional staff, it has required a hefty investment in training. Capnerhurst says everyone on their school-age program staff began taking courses over a year ago. Additionally, every camp staff member, including new and seasonal employees, will engage in a week-long training that focuses on SEL prior to the camp season. “They say it takes a village to raise a child,” says Capnerhurst. “At the Y, we recognize our responsibility to be there when families need us most. After a long, challenging year we look forward to supporting every child’s wellbeing this summer at the YMCA.

Empowerment Camp teaches sailing basics, alongside selfesteem building. Youngsters will explore parts of the boat, rigging, capsize recovery, boat handling, tacking, jibing, and points of sail. Camps are taught primarily by student designers and teachers from the Innovation Center, and offer a widerange of fun STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) activities – including coding, design, robotics, drones and flight, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
