Local vet remembers USS Mount Hood disaster

WWII tragedy wiped out a ship, damaged dozens of others By Jeff Rice

Time has a way of condensing memories. The way Larry Gaschler remembers it, his personnel boat, with one officer aboard, had just passed under the bow of the USS Mount Hood minutes before the ammunition ship blew up. “It seems to me it was just minutes, because I remember passing past the bow of the ship and the next thing was this flash that was just all around us, and the heat, and metal falling around my boat,” he said, his eyes still bright with the excitement and terror of that moment. “Of course, it couldn’t have been that quick, you know, because there was just total devastation, so I don’t know how far away we were.” It was 08:55 on the morning of Nov. 10, 1944. The Mount Hood was less than a year old and newly arrived from stateside with 4,000 tons of munitions to support the coming operations to retake the Philippine Islands from the Japanese. It lay at anchor in Seeadler Harbor of Manus Island in the Admiralty Islands north of New Guinea. Seventeen-year-old Seaman First Class Lawrence Gashler was a member of the amphibious boat pool, a unit of landing craft-type boats that transferred supplies and ammunition from the supply ships arriving from the U.S. to the combat and support ships fighting the war. Sailors from the boat pool were assigned to the ship’s company of whatever ship they were offloading at the time. Gaschler had been assigned to help distribute munitions from the Mount Hood to the warships in the harbor, so he was assigned temporarily to the Mount Hood. Most of Gaschler’s fellow crewmen were busy offloading ammo, but on that Friday morning he’d been tasked to a personnel boat to ferry an officer from the air-

either the name of the officer or what ship he was taking the man to; in any event, they never arrived at their destination. He does remember, as he passed the Mount Hood, thinking how lucky he was to have

such easy duty that day. Minutes later would he realize just how lucky he was. “The boat had a canopy over the back of it, and I was sitting down, driving the boat, and the officer was standing up, you know, under the canopy with his hands over one of the canopy struts there,” he said. “In my mind, we’d just passed the (Mount) Hood when it blew up. The blast ... there was just this bright flash and I could feel the heat, and then just a second later (the concussion) hit us. It knocked the officer down and blew the canopy over, and one of the pipes from the canopy hit me and knocked me out.” When Gaschler came to moments later, the officer was scrambling to his feet and debris was falling in the water around them. “I said, ‘What are your orders, sir?’ ‘cause I was just a 17-year-old kid, scared as hell, we thought we were under attack,” Gashler said. “He said ‘Get me back to my ship!’ so we turned around and headed back.” After depositing the officer back aboard his ship, Gaschler ordinarily would have returned to his own ship. had been obliterated, and with it almost all of Seaman Gaschler’s shipmates. Eighteen sailors who had gone ashore earlier for mail call were, like Gaschler, lucky to be alive but without a ship to return to. “There was nothing left,” he said. “I heard that they found some parts of bodies, but we didn’t know if they were from the Mount Hood or some of the other ships around.” A website named World War II Today has an extensive account of the Mount Hood disaster, including eyewitness accounts of sailors in the vicinity. An unknown number of small craft being used to transfer the Mount Hood’s cargo simply disappeared, along with their crews. Accounts vary on the number of killed and injured in the explosion. A 1963 article in the U.S. Naval Institute’s “Proceedings” journal, authored by Chester A Gile, states that all 249 sailors who were aboard the Mount Hood died instantly. The USS Mindanao, an engine repair ship berthed only 350 yards away, suffered 82 men killed — 23 who were topside died immediately and the rest were killed when chunks of the Mount Hood blew through the Mindanao’s hull. There are a number of eyewitness accounts of the havoc that was wreaked within 2,000 yards of the ammo ship. Thirty-six ships in the area were damaged and another 22 small boats and landing craft sunk or damaged. Aboard the USS Argonne, a command and control ship berthed 1,100 feet away, a crewman was sliced in two by a piece of steel plate he was holding. The Argonne’s skipper later said his crew counted 221 pieces of debris that fell on his ship, some as big as 150 pounds. More pieces bounced off of the Argonne and damaged minesweepers and an oil tender moored alongside. The largest recovered piece of the Mount Hood was a 10-foot-by16-foot piece of the hull, found by divers later. The blast blew a hole in the harbor floor 1,000 feet long, 200 feet wide and 30 feet deep. Gaschler said he’d heard rumors later that a Japanese mini-submarine had

snuck into the harbor and torpedoed the Mount Hood. He said he doubts that. “Something happened aboard (the Mount Hood) that day,” he said. “They said later it was rough handling of the munitions, but nobody really knows. But I don’t think there was no sub in the harbor.” He doesn’t remember much of the aftermath, except helping with the cleanup. By early December he was bound for the Philippines where he ran an LCM landing craft in the fighting to push the Japanese out of Mindoro. He remembers sailing past Corregidor and Cavite in Manila Bay. “They were just blasted all to hell,” he said. “There wasn’t anything left of them.” Two years later, in 1947, he was honorably discharged from the Navy. The story Gaschler related to the Journal-Advocate was the first time he’s told anyone other than his children about that day in 1944. And there is a part of the story that has vexed him for almost three-quarters of a century. When Seaman First Class Gaschler went to give his account of his whereabouts that day, he was told that he was mistaken about the aircraft carrier where he’d picked up and delivered the young officer. GASCHLER from page 3 Harbor that day, he was told. But Gaschler is adamant — he remembers, even through the fog of war, the ship’s hull number, CVE79. It turns out, by comparing various accounts of Pacific campaigns, the USS Ommaney Bay probably was there that day. Through most of September, the Ommaney Bay stood off Peleliu and Anguar Islands and provided air cover for the fleet and close support strikes for the forces ashore. According to the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, she was at Manus Island to restock and refuel in October, took part in the Battles of Leyte and Samar, then returned to Manus for the month of November. She spent 10 days in December supporting the fighting on Mindoro, then returned to Manus on Christmas Eve. On New Year’s Day 1945 the

Ommaney Bay returned to Sulu Sea where a Japanese suicide plane crashed into her flight deck, releasing its two bombs into the decks below. Ninety-five sailors were lost in the explosions and attempts to put out the fires, but the ship had to be abandoned. Later, the destroyer USS Burns put a torpedo into her and she sank. So it is the Navy who probably is mistaken — confusion in the comings and goings of hundreds of ships involved in the most massive naval operations in history can lead to minor errors in accounting. But Larry Gaschler’s memory, even 74 years after the fact, does not falter on that point. That was the ship he retrieved the officer from and that was the ship he returned the officer to. He was an Ex-Prisoner of War, fought on the Beaches of Normandy and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, in December of 1945. Mr. Cucarola was a survivor of the infamous German death march where American GI’s were marched in the winter from Belgium, across Germany to Czechoslovakia. He is buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Arol A. Hoppe was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 2, 1941 just days before Pearl Harbor. He was accepted into military pilot training and graduated in February 1943. He became a flight instructor until being sent to the Pacific Theater where he flew C-46’s and C-47’s and followed the front from New Guinea to Tokyo, pulling gliders on the front and hauling wounded soldiers and cargo until World War II ended. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1946. He died in January 2010 and is buried next to his wife, Edna, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Dave Korrey, of Sterling, entered the Army on Dec. 15, 1941 and was discharged four years later on Oct. 15, 1945. Mr. Korrey's service included special forces training — 4.2 chemical mortars. His military duty sent him overseas into the European Combat Zone for 2-1/2 years where he participated in the invasions of Salerno, Southern France, and saw service in Africa and Italy. When the war ended he was well into Germany. Mr. Korrey served with the 99th Chemical Mortar Battalion and was attached to the 45th and 3rd Divisions. When discharged he held the rank of First Sergeant. He is deceased and buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.

Ralph Nelms entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 5, 1942 as a member of the 7th Cavalry with special training in combat using horses in El Paso, Texas, before being shipped to the Pacific Theater in World War II from San Francisco to Northern Australia. He fought in World War II through New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago Islands and the Philippine Islands in Luzon. He was stationed in various cities in Japan after the Japanese surrender in 1945, including Hiroshima, where he witnessed the devastation of the first atomic bomb on the city. Ralph was discharged from the Army on Nov. 26, 1945. Mr. Nelms reached the rank of Sergeant in the Army receiving the Asian Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Sgt. Clarence Frank Smith was in the U.S. Army, 35th Infantry, from Oct. 13, 1944 to Nov. 21, 1946. He was awarded an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and an Army of Occupation Medal. He is deceased.

VETERANS ROLL CALL Lloyd N. Souders

Lloyd N. Souders was inducted in the U.S. Navy on July 1942 and served on the Pasedena in the Panama for two years, escorting convoys to Cuba. He then joined the 3rd Fleet on the USS St. Paul in the Pacific, the ship that was credited with firing the last shot on Japan. He was awarded the 1-Star Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and the American Area Carrier Ribbon.

Gerald L. Spillman

Gerald L. Spillman was an Electronics Technician I in the U.S. Navy where he served from 1964-1971. Mr. Spillman, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, also served in the Colorado Army National Guard in 1975-1979 and 1981-1982. He was honored with the Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal. He is a .45 Pistol Marksman and M-16 Rifle Expert.
