Hospital opens education center Facilty set to offer central location for trainings By Sara Knuth The Daily Record

FLORENCE — Jessica Pritt wanted to be a certified nursing assistant as soon as she graduated from high school. But after having children, her plans changed and she earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting instead. So, when she found out last year that St. Thomas More Hospital would begin offering a CNA training program, she enrolled in the first class. Just a few months later, she works at the hospital in multiple departments. “I love it,” Pritt said. “I can actually say I love my job now.” She was among a small crowd of hospital employees and community officials who celebrated the new St. Thomas More Education Center on Wednesday in Florence. The faithbased hospital hosted a dedication and blessing by chaplain Joe Garkovich at the

facility, located at 521 W. Fifth St. Outside of the CNA program, the center is intended to offer medical training to a variety of professionals. Jim Woodard, the hospital’s chief nursing officer, said the process started last year as a way to create more educational

opportunities for students, St. Thomas More staff members, law enforcement officials and other community members who need medical training. “Programming like that was just hard to come by in finding the space,” Woodard said, adding that previously, medical professionals

had to travel miles away to receive up-todate training. Throughout the facility, the hospital offers a computer lab, classroom space and eventually, rooms with robotic Laerdal patients that can simulate medical situations. The classes and resources offered locally also include nurse residency, electronic record training, heart attack training, basic life support, preceptor training, pediatric

advanced life support and trauma nursing. In addition, the space is available as a place for meetings. Before the St. Thomas More Education Center, programs like that, and CNAs themselves, were hard to come by, said Marsha Bell, the program’s lead instructor. “Us in the hospital, the nursing home and a lot of the surrounding nursing homes, were struggling finding high-quality CNAs,”

she said, later adding that only one local option existed prior to the program. “All of them were in agreement that CNAs are a hard position to fill.” Since kicking off the training program earlier this year, three classes have graduated and most of them are working in the field. Getting to that point was the result of a lot of support from donors, said ChristiMarie Butler, the hospital foundation’s group director for development. “As the foundation, I focus on entirely on what the hospital needs to make this happen,” she said, adding that those needs are still growing with $45,000 still to go to implement more resources at the center. “What you’re seeing right now was made through major gifts and a request.” Additionally, she said, local philanthropists and about 40 percent of the hospital’s employees contributed to the funding effort. Upcoming CNA classes are scheduled for Sept. 11, Jan. 8, April 9, July 9 and run for five weeks each. For more information, the center can be contacted at STMeducationcenter@ centura.org.

Superintendents welcome a new school year By George Welsh Special to the Daily Record Cañon City Schools looks forward to educating our children once again this year. Thanks to improvement in academic performance, parents will be sending their children to a school district that is fully accredited by the state of Colorado. In CCSD we know choice is important to parents. Because of this, we strive to offer many learning options. Children can attend one of our three neighborhood elementary schools; Lincoln, McKinley, or Washington. Each has a special emphasis. Lincoln is a Discovery school with an increased focus on science and technology. McKinley offers positive behavior supports in a community-based atmosphere. Washington prepares children for the future through Stephen Covey’s Leader in Me culture program. If you prefer a K-8 environment for your child, CCSD has three. Harrison School inhabits world class facilities and offers emerging service learning programs. Mountain View Core Knowledge charter school teaches a rigorous curriculum in a 4-day instructional week. Cañon Exploratory School employs project based learning, encouraging students to deeply explore personal interests. Finally, many children prefer Cañon City Middle School’s traditional setting with a focus on core academics and a wide range of like skills class courses.

New this year are expanded choices at Cañon City High School. By instituting a career pathways curriculum and changing to a 5-period schedule, CCHS addresses a variety of coursework in core academic areas to support careers in Science – Technology - Engineering, Agriculture and Math (STEAM), Health and Business, Arts-Hospitality and Education, and Skilled Trades – Security and Industry. Add to this traditionally outstanding programs in business education, vocational technology, performing arts, and career-technology education, top it all off with the most productive high school-community college partnership in the state of Colorado and, well, the choices are endless. We appreciate the trust parents put in us when exercising their choice to send their most valuable assets to our schools. We also appreciate the support our community shows for the learning programs we offer. Fremont RE-2 School District, which includes Fremont Elementary School, Fremont Middle School, Penrose Elementary School, and Florence High School, started the 2017-2018 school year last week! I had the pleasure of meeting our new teachers at their induction training today and was impressed by the talent they will share with our students in the upcoming year. They will be a welcome addition to the dedicated staff we have! Principals are back in their schools, too. Secretaries and counselors are preparing schedules and helping students and families register online or at school. All of us are preparing for the teacher’s return next week. On Aug. 14, we will welcome students back for the school year and find ourselves counting the days until we see them! The First Day of School! All teachers favorite day of the year! This year promises to be a year of exciting changes in Fremont RE-2 schools! Over the summer, our administrative team attended the Buck Institute’s Project Based Learning Conference in California. Even though both Fremont Middle School and Florence High School have been working toward integration of Project

Based Learning, it was a great opportunity for our team to solidify a district-wide plan of implementation. Project Based Learning is based on the concept of connecting curriculum to real life and allowing students to “show what they know” in a variety of ways. In May, Florence High School students hosted a community night to showcase the culmination of some of the projects students had been working on. One student, who wants to be a dentist, created clay models of a root canal and filmed an instructional video detailing each step of the procedure. One student simulated the Westminster Kennel Dog Show, demonstrating each required command, along with the associated scoring rubric. Many more inventive projects were shared with proud parents and community members. We believe these kinds of learning opportunities will engage and inspire students, at all levels, to want to know more and will help them retain more of what they’ve learned. As a district, we are committed to helping students sustain their love of learning, throughout their Fremont RE-2 educational career. As we look toward Aug. 14, (every teacher’s favorite day), we find ourselves more engaged, more excited, and more inspired than ever before! 5 ways to help kids start the school year strong (BPT) - The beginning of the school year isn’t just about getting backpacks and school supplies ready. It’s also a time when parents check to make sure their children are ready for success in their next classroom. According to a national survey of K-8 parents conducted by the parent organization Learning Heroes, parents are

uneasy when it comes to raising their children, with peer pressure and their children’s happiness at the top of their worries. In fact, three of five parents say it is more important their child be happy and not overly stressed than to do well academically. When it comes to academics, nearly all parents - nine in 10 - believe their

Rookie Principal of the Year Principal honored by Colorado Association of School Executives By Sara Knuth The Daily Record Before school started last year,

Cañon City High School principal Bill Summers was just five years removed from a 23-year Air Force career. “I’m not an educator by trade. I’m fairly new to this, having only taught for five years,” he said. “While I learned a tremendous amount about education, and I did bring a lot of experience from my prior job, stepping into this role was certainly daunting.” But heading into his second year as principal, Summers has school leadership experience and an award to prove it. The Cañon City School District learned July 5 that Summers won the 2017 Colorado Rookie Secondary Principal of the Year Award, which is presented by the Colorado Association of School Executives. He traveled to Breckenridge to accept the award during the association’s convention. During his first year on the job, Summers helped lead CCHS toward a change in school culture and a full-scale curriculum change, Pathways, which is set to be implemented next year. “I think a focus of the building every day of the year was to try to improve the culture and climate of the building and make sure people enjoyed coming here to work,” he said, adding that he also emphasized making sure students felt safe at school. Additionally, the school introduced work sessions and Saturday sessions, which allowed students to catch up on school work when their grades began slipping. “We had a 35 percent less failure

rate in all academics,” Summers said. “Once you start applying that, that’s a huge amount of students that are no longer failing classes because of this program.” Meeting a goal like that, he added, was the result of making sure teachers were ready for the change. “I learned that the only way to essentially change a school for the better was to make sure that the people in the building are invested

in the change,” he said. “Nothing can be top-down directed. My role is essentially to try to coordinate all the good ideas and move the staff in the right direction to get them implemented.” When it comes to the recognition, Summers brought attention to the teachers, too. “I see the award as recognizing everyone in the building,” he said. “It’s really a collective award.

Our attitudes about learning - called “mindsets” have an impact on how our children learn, how they feel about making mistakes and their self-confidence. Promote a “growth mindset” at home to help your child see that hard work is what leads to success. Congratulate your child for the hard work and effort put into completing a task. This will help your child feel less nervous about taking on new tasks or subjects.

Encourage life skills along the way. When it comes to your child’s potential and happiness, focus on the whole picture. Strengths like being able to communicate, problem-solve, show patience and act independently will help your child in school and life. Talk openly with your child about how he or she is feeling and reacting to situations at school, on the playground and at home. Back to school is an important time for both kids and parents, and these five tips can help provide a strong kick-off to a successful school year.
