Eli Daniel ‘Dan’ Mestas

Gary Henry Meyer, 84, of Penrose, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Forget Me Not Memory Care home in nearby Florence. Gary was surrounded by his family and friends in the days and minutes preceding his death and was in the warm embrace of his wife of nearly 24 years when Jesus finally called him home after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Gary was born Oct. 28, 1932, to Alfred and Marguerite (Dieterich) Meyer in Fargo, ND. Growing up and spending his formative adolescent years on the family dairy farm taught Gary his impeccable work ethic and incredible ingenuity. After losing both his parents at a young age, Gary graduated from West Fargo High School in 1950 and left the family farm to share his numerous talents with several companies throughout his career (Woolworths, KXMB TV, Ralston Purina and Globe Life United American). Gary also spent time as a ranch hand in the scenic Sandhills of Nebraska and served as a Citizen Airman in the Bismarck Civil Air Patrol. As his insurance career wound down, his life-long love for the Ol' West, leatherwork and fast-draw gun belts led him to meet his wife, Sandy. Their leather business, Classic Leather Designs, was a source of many wonderful friendships throughout the country. Gary loved people and a good conversation. He was right at home meandering though the many tradeshows they attended in his cowboy boots, custom cowboy hat and sharply pressed wranglers - looking for an ear to bend. Gary will be remembered for his kind smile, quick wit, and honest-to-goodness chivalry. He had a clever one-liner for nearly every situation you could encounter. He was dearly loved by many. Gary is survived by his wife (Sandy) and stepson (Tom), Gary's adult children (Laurie, Hollie, Lee, Clay, Wendy, Clint and Travis and their spouses), a sister (Elinor), 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and siblings (Lawrence, Emily, Allen, Leroy, Robert, and Arleigh). A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Mountain View Community Church (200 Justice Center Road, Cañon City, CO 81212). Service arrangements are under the care of Holt Funeral Home (719.275.4113). In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be directed to one of the following: Cañon Cowboy Church, First Baptist Church of Cañon City or Sangre de Cristo Hospice.

Donna Lavern Trogden Cain, 56, of Cañon City passed away on Sept. 7, 2017, with family by her side. Born Jan. 2, 1961, to Arthur and Shirley Trogden she met and married the love of her life, Douglas Cain on Aug. 25, 1990. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Shirley Trogden, siblings Monroe, Neva, Billy, Sherman, Delberta, David, Joyce, and Ruby, and by brother-in-law John Vasquez. She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-seven years, Douglas Cain, siblings, Jeanne Vasquez, Jimmy (Loretta) Trogden, Yvonne Kenitzer, Tom (Penny) Trogden, Mary (Bobby) Freeman, Darlene (Jim) Globoker, Nita (Jerry) Anderson, Nesha (Doug) Czaskowski, Floyd Trogden, Bobby (Shelby) Trogden, Mother-in-law, Marie Chadwell, Sister-in-laws, Cindy Cain, Diana Chaffin, two special nieces Dana and Nichole Kenitzer and many wonderful aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Donna worked for Starpoint as a caregiver and was blessed with a son Josiah Romero for seven years. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 13, followed by services at 10 a.m. Services are entrusted to the Florence Mortuary. 120 Pikes Peak Ave, Florence.

Eli Daniel “Dan” Mestas passed away September 12, 2017. He was born June 15, 1935, in Florence, Colorado to Eli Mestas and Sally Blanchard and was raised by his grandparents, Ben and Julia Leyba. He proudly worked as a Transportation Manager at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs for over 36 years. Dan was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He fondly enjoyed his retirement by passing the time with his family and friends, creating long-lasting memories. He spent ten of those years traveling and enjoying many places with his beloved wife Julia, who passed away in 2001. He later re-married and adored his wife, Gayle, with whom he shared fifteen years. Dan and Gayle shared a very special bond of love. Many evenings they could be found outside in their beautiful backyard sharing stories about life, family and fun. In his younger years, Dan enjoyed the great outdoors, hunting, camping and fishing on his boat. He was a devoted Bronco fan and could always be found in front of his big screen T.V., enjoying the game with Gayle and his dog, Shadow close by. Dan was known to many for his funny jokes and enlightening sense of humor. He treasured his family dearly and loved each and every one in his own special way. He always held a special place in his heart for his twin brother, Joe and also his grandchildren, who filled his heart with joy and spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Sally; grandparents, Ben and Julia; and children, Bob and Sally. Dan is survived by his wife, Gayle; children, Daniel (Joey) Mestas, Lisa (Nacho) Sandoval; stepchildren, Eric (Michele) Fraass, John (Karen) Fraass, Paula (Brad) Krause; brother, Joseph (Priscilla) Mestas; sister, Vickie (Mike) Anderson; grandchildren, Caitlin Dageforde, Karly Padilla, Jace Sandoval, Abigail Fraass, Griffin Fraass, Lincoln Fraass, and Coleton Krause. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan’s loving spirit and kind heart will be missed by all and we will be united again when we are called home. Mark Service Burger Mark Service Burger, age 61, passed away in Pueblo Sept. 8, 2017. Mark was born to Herschel and Neva (Service) Burger in Cañon City on Jan. 16, 1956. Mark graduated from Cañon City High School in 1975 and from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a bachelor degree in journalism. Mark held many colorful career positions - including PR manager for a rock group in Texas, ticket sales manager at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, and finally to media assistant at the Cañon City Public Library. Mark was active in his church, Christ Episcopal Church in Cañon City. He sang in the church choir and was a member of the vestry. Mark’s parents and younger brother, Jeff, preceded him in death. Mark is survived by siblings, Robert (Nancy), Jean Haynes (Ron), Kent (Pam), Debra Burger; and Jeff’s wife, Kathleen Bottagaro. Mark is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. A memorial celebration will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Eighth and Harrison in Cañon City at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.

Joseph Tyler ‘Joey’ Dohrmann Our son, Joseph Tyler Dohrmann, passed away September 10, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born April 10, 1991 in Cañon City. Joseph (Joey) learned to love the Colorado mountains, which he shared with his family. He desired to pass on his love of outdoor activities to his son, Joseph Paul Dohrmann, whom he loved with all his heart. His love of the wilderness partly led to his decision to become a Marine, which was his calling. An Afghanistan veteran, he earned the rank of Corporal and loved military training. In addition to the Colorado mountains, Joey also loved the ocean. His most peaceful times were spent sleeping on the deck of a ship. He was an avid reader of fiction and history and dreamed of being an author. He spent much of his time learning the craft of writing and was currently authoring a book. He loved sports and was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos.

Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph Paul Dohrmann; father, Meryl (Cynthia) Dohrmann; mother, Jennifer (Jay) Le Blanc; brother, Tristan Dohrmann; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous extended family members. Joey is also survived by Kelly Flickinger, who was the love of his life and great supporter. She and all his family loved him very much and will miss him immensely. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John C. Mitchell, Oreada Mitchell, Verna Dohrmann, and Howard Dohrmann. Joey was also preceded in death by many of his Marine brethren and he felt their loss deeply. Funeral service, 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with reception to follow at the home of Joey’s uncle, Paul Dohrmann in Cañon City, beginning at 5 p.m.. Briefly Help needed for Living Nativity Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, which has hosted the “Living Nativity” in December for the past 18 years, is in need of assistance to enable it to continue this important community outreach. Help is needed in the following areas: individuals or a group with gentle animals such as sheep, goats, donkey, calves and llamas (portraying camels) whose owners would accompany the animals during the production; assistance for set up and dismantling the set; and individuals to portray characters, assist with costumes, assist with traffic control, hand out brochures during the event, post flyers and more. InLovingMemory Florence M. Jewell Florence M. Jewell, 92, (“Shirley” to those who knew her) of Burlington, WA, passed away of pneumonia on 9/9/17 at the Hospital in Sedro Woolley, WA with her family nearby. She was born and raised in Cañon City, second daughter to Neal and Stella Shirley (Moss). She had one sister, Mary Jo Hoadley (Cheyenne, WY) and three brothers, Tom and Kenny (Boise, ID) and Les (Kalispell, MT). She moved to Meridian, ID her junior year in HS to live with her brother Tom and graduated in 1944. While at Meridian High she met the love of her life, James L. Jewell (son of Dr. Leo and Susan Jewell). Within weeks of Jim’s return home from WWII in 1945, they were married and remained happily married for 70 years, until Jim’s death in 2016 at age 92. A professional seamstress throughout her life, she managed fabric stores and worked out of her home for many years, sewing for others. She was well known for her immaculate attention to detail by all her clients and family. Sewing beautiful clothes for her daughter was a constant. Her passion in life, however, was her family and she was the glue, the rock that held the family together always. She was the bookkeeper and partner in her husband’s many business ventures, including Jewell & Son Logging and Burlington and Bellingham video stores. Their businesses and Jim’s work as an air traffic controller for the government entailed frequent moves. Mom always made each house feel like a beloved home. Upon retirement, they enjoyed snow birding to Palm Desert for many years with friends. She was a sweet, gentle soul with a wry sense of humor that her family adored. Always doing for others and rarely for herself, she was a woman of grace and substance. Dad, we all got lucky! Mom, you are forever missed beyond any words. We will always cherish our incredible memories with you. Florence (aka Shirley) is survived by her son, Rick Jewell; daughter Cheryl Jewell-Wos (Tom); grandchildren: Adam Jewell (Tara), Colleen Jewell, Rebecca Jewell-Ocepek (Ryan); great-grandchildren: Andrew and Marcos Jewell, Aidan and Lily Ocepek; Sister-in-law Norma Jewell (Boise, ID); Steven Hoadley (Eddie) of Cheyenne, WY and other extended family. An 11 a.m. graveside service with Lunch provided directly thereafter will be Saturday, Sept. 23, at Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, WA. A Step Ahead Beauty Salon recently celebrated its opening at 735 S. Ninth St. in Canon City. Owner Teresa Blair has been a hair stylist since 1986 and ran her own salon in Buena Vista for 15 years before moving to Canon City in 2010. Before that, she ran another salon in her hometown of Yuma. Blair said since moving to Canon City, the community has made her feel welcomed and proud to call this area home. She said her favorite part about running the salon is getting to know and build relationships with each client so they

leave happy and not only does she gain a client but also a friend, as well. Blair’s goal for the future is to offer a full-service salon, featuring tanning and nails. Blair said she enjoys the small-town feel of Canon City and will offer discounts to seniors. A Step Ahead offers haircuts for men, women and children. In Loving Memory Cañon City’s Bikes & Brews, Leland F. Uhlenhopp

Leland F. Uhlenhopp was born Nov. 19, 1924, in

Storden, Minn., to Martin and Florence Hengten Uhlenhopp. He passed away in Cañon City Sept. 10, 2017. His father was a farmer and also owned a construction company, building many roads and bridges throughout the state of Minnesota. As a young boy he learned how to set dynamite and blast rock for the rock crusher. His father also had a friend down the road who owned an airplane. This friend taught Lee to fly and also how to pack a parachute. He carried these skills with him into the Army/Air Corps of WWII, where he learned to be a Glider Pilot and became a Senior Master Parachutist (87 jumps) with the 11th Airborne Division under General Joseph Swing. Lee served in the Pacific theater in the Philippines, New Guinea, and on the islands of Corregidor, Leyte, and Luzon. During these battles Lee was severely wounded by a grenade and shrapnel, for which he received the Purple Heart with Two Oak Leaf Clusters (three awards). After the war, Lee and his new bride, Audrey, came to Cañon City, where he went to work at the Colorado State Prison under then famous Warden Roy Best. Lee later bought a farm north of town in 1950, where he farmed and worked as a federal employee at then Camp Carson, now known as Fort Carson. During this time Lee was also a reservist engineer, and as such, was instrumental in building our nation’s first speed track at Holliman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Lee retired from military service at the rank MSGT. After he retired from the Federal Civil Service at Fort Carson, he became a Deputy for the Freemont County Sheriff’s Department, and as such, he was the Bailiff for the Freemont District Courts system for 12 years. Lee served on a number of boards and committees, always dedicating his time to his family, community, those in need, and his country. Lee was preceded in death by his first wife of many years, Audrey, and also by his daughter, Yvette Guion, and one grandson. He is survived by his wife, Leah Smithson- Uhlenhopp, his sons Robert F. (Laura) and Terry L. (Cristine) Uhlenhopp, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. In honor of Lee’s request, there will be no services.

Harvest Festival usher in autumn

Cañon City is gearing up for an eventful autumn season. The weekend of Sept. 23-24 will feature three lively events: the fifth annual Bikes & Brews Festival, the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey’s Harvest Festival and the culmination of the Fremont Center for the Arts’ Spoke Art & Vintage Bicycle Show. These events are designed to work in tandem with one another as participants enjoy a full weekend of recreation and entertainment in the Royal Gorge Region. For the fifth year in a row, Fremont Adventure Recreation will host the annual Bikes & Brews festival, which combines three distances of road bike rides with a post-ride celebration in Macon Plaza. Experienced riders can opt for the Royal Gorge Century or Metric Mash, which offer riders a long-distance ride throughout the region, culminating in a ride over the famed Royal Gorge Bridge and Skyline Drive. Those who would rather a shorter ride can participate in the Red Canyon 50K, which takes riders along the historic route of Fourmile Creek. The post-ride celebration, open to all riders, spectators, and community members, features live music by Bethel Steele and Kyle Donovan, food by local favorite Pizza Madness, and beer by Odell Brewing Company. “Sitting underneath the cottonwoods at Macon plaza, on the grass, enjoying some mellow music is a fantastic way to pass a weekend,” said Adam Hartman, coordinator for Bikes & Brews. “This event combines what we love most about this area: scenic views, recreation, and our beautiful downtown.” The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey will also play host to locals and visitors alike who enjoy wine, crafts, food, and live entertainment. This year, as in past years, participants are treated to a special ‘Wine and Wheels’ package, a two-for-one commemorative wine glass and

The event will also feature live Jazz, Blues, and

Rock n’ Roll music. Art and vintage bicycles have been featured in the month of September at the Fremont Center for the Arts, and they’ll be open on the Saturday of Bikes & Brews. Riders and spectators are welcome to peruse the gallery, which is located at Macon Plaza, for free. Vintage bikes from local collectors are featured, as is art from various artists and craftsman. The show is an eclectic celebration of bikes, recreation, and the Royal Gorge area. Entry to all three events is free to the public. To participate in the bike rides, cost is $65-$85 (depending on distance); rides leave at 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. At the Harvest Festival, the cost of a commemorative wine glass and four tasting tickets is $10; hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. If asked the question: “If you should die tonight, do you feel that you would go to heaven?” one might answer in several ways. Our thoughts today are for any who might say, “I don’t know” or “I’m not sure.” Those who honestly don’t know their spiritual condition may be encouraged to know that the Scriptures teach that one can confidently know his spiritual standing before God. Jesus said to be saved, one must first believe that He is the Christ: the Son of God: “Unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24). Jesus began His public ministry by preaching that people must “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15) and by saying, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish (Luke 13:3). Repentance is a change of mind (for the better) that leads to a change in behavior. John the baptizer told some unrepentant Pharisees to prove their repentance by doing good (Matthew 3:8). Also, Jesus insisted that all who would follow Him be willing to publically confess their belief: “Everyone therefore who will confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Jesus also taught that baptism is essential to one’s salvation, saying, “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). Those who obey the commands of Jesus are saved and added to the church by the Lord (Acts 2:38-47). When one is baptized, the old man of sin is buried and a new life in Christ begins (Romans 6:1-4).
