InLovingMemory Donna Lee Noble Donna Lee Noble, 82, of Canon City, obtained her eternal reward in Heaven Sept. 3, 2017. She was born Aug. 31, 1935, to Doy and Lora (Hunsley) Brown in Wichita, Kan. Donna married, Larry Noble, the love of her life and spent many years traveling the world as a military wife. A resident of Fremont County since 1970, Donna owned and operated Elfinware Ceramics for many years and enjoyed casting ceramics and everything arts and crafts. Donna enjoyed being a wife and mother and spending time with her children and family. She loved camping and being outdoors. You would often hear her singing a tune and laughing, as she found humor in so many things. She also enjoyed working with computers and the many aspects of them. She is survived by her husband, of 64 years Larry; children, Donald Noble, Greg (Donna Rae) Noble, Cheryl (James) McDaniel, James (Lisa) Noble; 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Kenneth and Gerald and siblings, Lucille, Doris and Barbara Jo. Kenneth Lee Jahn Kenneth Lee Jahn, 81, of Canon City, passed away Sept. 2, 2017. He was born in Pueblo on December 19, 1935, to Fredrick and Myrtle (McBride) Jahn, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 28, 1965, Ken married Lutrecia “Pat” Riley, in Colorado Springs. Ken served in both the Army and Navy and was a member of Lifeway Southern Baptist Church, the Elks Club and Masonic Lodge. He was a proud, 50-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 113. In addition to working as an electrician, Ken became a silversmith and goldsmith. With his wife, Pat, he owned and operated jewelry stores in Cripple Creek and Canon City, known as Jahn’s Jewelry and Gifts. He served as the Chief of Police for the City of Victor and was a board member for the Cripple Creek District Museum. Ken loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and was a member of the Gold Camp Fishing Club. He especially enjoyed boating and spending time at his home in Michigan. Ken was a huge sports fan and enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Pat Jahn; children, Jody (Cathy) Jahn, Sheryl (Roy) Marta, Sandy (Ed) Farmer, Shari (Shawn) Tomlinson, Amy (Larry, Jr.) Conley; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, extended family members and many friends. Along with his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his son, Tim Jahn and three brothers. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, Lifeway Southern Baptist Church, 1007 Elm Ave., in Canon City. Interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Community gets inside look at CCMS issues By Sara Knuth The Daily Record In one classroom, Cañon City School District officials talked over the hum of an air conditioner that sits below the ceiling. “This is not conducive to good instruction,” Operations Director Jeff Peterson told a crowd of about 30 on Wednesday during a tour of Cañon City Middle School. Superintendent George Welsh added: “A school built in the last 20 years — you wouldn’t have this noise.” In another room, the group saw a crack along the floor of a rectangular classroom built for a 1925 class. And in the basement, they saw dirt floors in the makeshift sewer cleanout system, a decades-old boiler room and, through a door next to the cafeteria, a musty room filled with dust and chipped paint. Those were the sights on display Wednesday during the first tour of a series hosted by the district to educate the community about the bond issue officials are placing on the November ballot. If the measure passes, the district will seek funding from the state to tear down and replace the school. The funding also would help school officials make districtwide repairs and potentially, replace Washington Elementary School, which was completed 1949. A second CCMS tour was Thursday. The district also is planning a tour of Washington for 6 p.m.

As the group of community members made their way through the school Wednesday, officials also told them that bathrooms are only accessible to students via stairs and an elevator that isn’t up to code, which means the district doesn’t meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. In the auditorium, which is on the school’s third floor, Peterson showed the group missing tiles in the ceiling. “Is it asbestos up there?” one attendee asked. “Above it is,” Peterson answered. “The third floor is the worst up here. Any nine-by-nine tile you see up in the bathrooms up here is likely where all that stuff is.” But to make improvements, the district is looking for ways to secure funding. Even though the district is asking for community support, if all goes according to the district’s plans, most of the funding would come from the Colorado Department of Education’s Building Excellent Schools Today program. However, the only way to secure the state funding is to provide matching funds from the community. As part of the plan to rebuild CCMS and Washington, the district is seeking to apply for a total of $30 million in funding from the BEST program. The bond issue will ask the community to approve a $6.2 million match for Washington and

an $8 million match for CCMS. The matching funds will not be collected unless the district receives the BEST funding, according to the ballot language. Additionally, officials learned in the spring that they are set to receive a grant to help make repairs in the district’s six other schools. If the community votes against the measure, though, the district will not receive the funding. During Wednesday’s tour, Peterson and Welsh also addressed group concerns. For a few attendees, issues stem from promises made in previous bond issues that still haven’t been met. But when state funding is involved, officials argued, the district has to follow through on its promises. “When we go to the BEST grant, we have to follow that to a T,” Peterson said. “It’s the state’s money. They want to know where everything goes.” Officials are planning to meet on the steps of CCMS for Thursday’s tour and at the front entrance of Washington for the Sept. 12 tour. The district is also planning to place a $1.3 million mill levy override on the ballot to help the district hire quality teachers, create more opportunities for preschool education, create a one-to-one student technology program, replace outdated education materials and improve the safety, security and maintenance at schools.

Rolling Designs opens at 132 E. Main St. Florence’s Main Street has a new business with a unique set up. A group of six people are helping to run Rolling Designs at 132 E. Main St. The consignment business is spread out into four rooms with different themes, including fine arts, collectables, antiques and repurposed items. The six, which consists of Bill and Carrol Fischlein, Laura Frevert, Randy and Mary Pat Jennings and Janet Hopper, met in April after renting a booth from the previous

owner of the location. The group wanted to start something new and brainstormed ideas that became Rolling Designs, which opened four months ago. The new business owners said it was a perfect time in their lives for something new and Florence is a wonderful,

Teek restaurant opens on Cañon City’s Main Street

Cañon City’s Main Street has welcomed a new restaurant with the opening of Teek at 507 Main St. Restauranteur and Chef Tara Dunsmoor-Bauer is pleased to announce the opening of her first restaurant. Dunsmoor-Bauer, who owned That Truck, decided to leave the food truck behind and open a brick and mortar restaurant a year ago. After a search across Fremont County, she found the perfect place to call home in historic downtown Cañon City. Teek, a farm-to-table New American eatery, promises menu options for vegetarians, vegans and meat lovers, as well as gluten and peanut free options for persons with allergies. “Healthy food is imperative to a healthy body and mind and everyone deserves a meal they can eat,” Dunsmoor-Bauer said. Dunsmoor-Bauer brings her food truck culinary whizzes, Bee and Jess, and adds to the magic in the kitchen with Chris Brady and Josh Middlemist. Together, the Teek culinary team is expanding the already popular food truck menu and adding full dinner entrees, appetizers and dessert. Two of the more popular menu items with Teek staff are the blackened fish tacos and magic mushrooms. Dunsmoor-Bauer is committed to serving farm fresh dishes, sourcing local ingredients and produce from farms around the area. “Knowing where your food comes from is important,” said Dunsmoor-Bauer, “which is why I am committed to providing dishes that are GMO-free, with locally sourced and Colorado ingredients.” Teek also has an event space upstairs, with a 299 person capacity. Dunsmoor-Bauer and her event staff are looking forward to hosting weddings, parties and classes in the space known as The Annex. The event space was most recently used to shoot a music video by a local band. Teek opened Sept. 1 during Cañon City’s First Friday. The restaurant will be open six days a week for lunch and dinner, with brunch offered all day Sundays as soon as a liquor license is obtained.

“If you should die tonight, are you sure that you would go to heaven?” There are several ways one might answer: some might answer the question uncertainly, saying, “I don’t know” or “I’m not sure.” Some might answer with certainty in the affirmative, saying, “Yes, if I should die tonight, I feel that I would go to heaven.” Others might answer with certainty but in the negative, saying, “No, I’m not sure that I would go to heaven if I were to die tonight.” Whichever way one answers, one thing should be remembered: just because one “feels” a certain way does not make it so. That’s because human feelings or emotions, also known as “what our heart tells us,” may not always be accurate or in harmony with God’s will. For example, in Jeremiah 17:9 we read, “The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt, who can know it?” We might conclude from this passage that human “feelings” are not a safe guide, especially when it comes to eternal things! But if we can’t trust our heart, what can we trust? The answer is found in Psalms 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.” In 1 John 5:13 we read, “These things have I written unto you, that you may know you have eternal life, even unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God.” One can know he has eternal life by faithful obedience to the things that have been written concerning the Son of God (to be continued).
