Linda Jo Six

Lois Ann Bustos, 84, passed away peacefully December 7, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Joe Bustos for 52 years and the mother of Larry (Yencid) Bustos, Jim (Natalie) Bustos, Ben (Erin) Bustos, and Claudine (Alan) Werner. She shared her love with eight amazing grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Lois was born April 17, 1933 in Walsenburg, Colorado. She grew up on her family ranch, “The Schmidt Brothers Cattle Company” in Gardner, Colorado. Joe and Lois resided in Cañon City since 1963. Lois always being a hard worker spent 28 years in the field of nutrition at St. Thomas Moore Hospital in Cañon City. Lois enjoyed many hobbies that kept her very busy. She had a knack to leave her impression on all who met her. She will be missed by all and forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. She was preceded in death by her son, Ernie Ray; daughter, Sophie Louise; and her husband, Joe. Feb. 8, 1932 - Dec. 6, 2017 Joyce C. Miller, matriarch of our family passed peacefully on Dec. 6, 2017, at the age of 85. She was born Feb. 8, 1932, in Dodge City, Kan., to Harry Dice and Dovie (Daniels) Dice. Joyce moved with her family to Colorado when she was seven years old. She attended Cañon City schools, graduating from CCHS in 1950. She married Fred A. Miller Jr. and had three wonderful children. She was an interior decorator, car salesman and housewife all wrapped in one. She loved her rose gardens and enjoyed to travel. Joyce had a love for cars with her prize possession being her 1976 Rolls Royce. She is survived by her daughter, Trudy Miller; sons, Randy (Gladie) Miller and Troy (Karen Tracy) Miller; sister, Pauline McGuire and special nephew, Barry O’Riley. She is also survived by sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, Lena Dice; husband, Fred Miller, Jr.; brother-in-law, Dick McGuire and numerous brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law. Kathryn Jean (Lowry) Lopez Feb. 6, 1939 ~ Dec. 12, 2017 Kathryn Jean (Lowry) Lopez, 78 passed away December 12, 2017. Kay was born in Canon City, Colorado to Curtis and Clara (Bannigan) Lowry. She graduated from Canon City High School then went on to graduate from Eastern College (PA). Kay loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was active in many American Baptist Churches. Kay and Conrad owned several restaurants throughout Colorado and a dress shop in the US Virgin Islands. She has three children, Mark Lopez (Sihem), Cliff Lopez (Denise) and Kathleen (Lopez) Chandler (Roger),

and five grandchildren. She lived in Aurora, Colorado with her daughter’s family since her husband, Conrad Lopez, Jr. passed in 2011. Memorial service, 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2017, at Community of Grace Church in Aurora. Recycling program to host post-holiday electronics event The Upper Arkansas Area Council of

Governments in partnership with Fremont County, the City of Cañon City and the City of Florence will host a post-holiday electronicsrecycling event from noon to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 30 in the parking lot of the Florence Municipal Center, 600 W. Third St., in Florence. During this event, you will be able to recycle your televisions, monitors, CPUs, printers, and other small electronics. Prices are as follows: Monitors, $10, CPU’s, $5, Desktop Printers, $5.00. Small electronics, such as stereos, can be recycled for $5. Keyboards, cords, cell phones, ink cartridges, mice and other small peripherals will be taken at no charge when you recycle other components. “After the holidays, we are pleased to offer residents an additional opportunity to properly and safely recycle unwanted televisions, computers and other electronic items,” Fremont County Commissioner Dwayne McFall said. “By participating in this event, residents are helping to reduce the amount of unsafe disposals in our area, which can be harmful to the environment as well as illegal to put in the trash.” Colorado implemented an electronics landfill ban in July 2013, with the passage of SB12133. Banned waste electronic devices include television sets, central processing units (CPUs), computer monitors, peripherals, printers, fax machines, laptops, notebooks, ultrabooks, net books, electronic tablets, digital video-disc (DVD) players, radios, stereos, video game consoles and video display devices with screens greater than four inches diagonally. Waste electronics and computers from residential and non-residential sources cannot be disposed of in solid waste landfills in Colorado. Harmful chemicals can leach out of this waste and contaminate soil and groundwater. Electronics will be recycled by Southern Colorado Recyclers, a Colorado-registered electronics recycler, as required by Colorado law. All electronics will be recycled responsibly and all hard drives are shredded to ensure privacy. Time to break the habit By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Anyone planning on taking the first step toward becoming tobacco-free in the New Year may want to consider a free tobacco cessation program offered by St. Thomas More Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Department. A free, 13-week tobacco cessation program will offer weekly classes at 5 p.m. Tuesday evenings from Jan. 9 to April 3 at STM in the upstairs conference room, located at 1338 Phay Ave. This class is modeled after the most successful national smoking cessation programs and is offered free of charge as a community service. Derick Brady, 34, has helped facilitate the class since he took it three years ago. He first started smoking when he was a teenager, but he wanted to quit before he got married. He tried to quit smoking six times before taking the class. “I do this so that I can help people quit because it is hard,” he said. “It takes a very good community and support system. The class also gives you something to look forward to every week and it helps with accountability.” He said it’s normal for people to slip up when they are trying to stop smoking, but he encourages them to keep coming back to the class.

In addition to the cravings, one of the most difficult parts about quitting smoking is changing the routine, he said. “Smoking is routine,” Brady said. “When I had my coffee, I had my cigarette — that was the hardest routine I had to break — so I quit drinking coffee for about a week to break that cycle.” Now that he is tobacco-free, Brady said he has less chance of developing lung cancer, and he estimates he saves about $2,000 a year by not buying cigarettes. There are many health risks involved with smoking — ranging from emphysema and lung and throat cancer to heart disease and stroke. Cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke cause more than 440,000 premature and preventable deaths each year in the United States, according to information provided by St. Thomas More. “This program is for anyone wanting to quit using tobacco, whether it’s your first time trying to quit or you have attempted to quit before,” said Laurie McKeever, certified respiratory therapist at STM. “Our goal is to help you understand your addiction to nicotine and learn ways to control urges. Those who attend this class will be given supportive guidance from me as your program coordinator, as well as others

Health department to host six-week tobacco cessation group The Fremont County Department of Public Health and Environment will offer a six-week tobacco cessation group that provides support for tobacco cessation and healthy living. The group provides: a supportive, positive and nonjudgemental environment to help participants through the process; information on how tobacco affects health and how to manage cravings and change habits; information on resources available through community or government organizations; and a flexible program designed to meet the needs of participants and help to make healthy choices in all areas of life. Mural depicts meaning of incarceration for offenders By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record A new mural at the Museum of Colorado Prisons represents the meaning of incarceration through the eyes of the offenders who created it. Seven offenders from the minimum-security Federal Prison Camp in Florence spent part of the week completing the project that depicts their journey “from darkness to light.” The mural is a community service project created by staff and offenders from the camp. It was painted as a project of the prison camp’s Creative Arts Platform in collaboration with Pueblo artist Mat Taylor and the museum. The first panel depicts a dark, heavy cloud bearing down on a chain gang, representing the early days of an offender’s incarceration. The next section represents education, religion and the art program, followed by a depiction of an offender “breaking free” and being reunited with his children and family. The final panel features flowers, butterflies and sprigs of new life, representing freedom. The offenders, who were prohibited from being photographed and being named in this article, when asked

For one of the offenders, the scene brings back memories and gives him hope for the future. “I’ve been gone since 2008; I’ve been down a long time,” he said. “I see that vision almost every day — every single day I see that vision right there — to see that is almost a dream come true.”

One of the men who helped with the project said he will be leaving prison in a matter of months, and the scene reminds him of how ready he is to see his sons. “I am breaking free, getting out of these walls, and running toward my kids,” he said. “That’s the first thing I want to do is run to my kids.” Another offender said he hopes visitors to the museum will enjoy the mural. “It’s for them,” he said. “My

gift is the happiness of the people who come to see it.” One other offender said he hadn’t painted in quite a while, so working on the mural reminded him of something he used to enjoy. “This was probably the highlight from the whole time I was incarcerated,” he said. “Normally, people don’t get to leave the prison and go out and do a community project like this. I am fortunate to have stumbled upon the class, it’s a real blessing. ... I strayed away from my artistic side, but this class helped recapture the passion to do art again.” Mat Taylor, who also is known as “Matte Refic,” assisted the offenders in the project and was instrumental in its completion. He is an artist, illustrator, muralist and street artist from Pueblo. Taylor’s 60-page coloring/ self-assessment book, “Meet Your Monsters,” has been brought in to offenders at the federal prison as art therapy, which led to the partnership with the mural program. “The premise of this mural is about leaving your mark, and what better way than use giant murals to do that,” he said. “I leave a mark everywhere I go, now these guys all get to — now they have a whole museum done, and to me, that is as far as you can go as an

artist, getting a museum gig.” He said working with the offenders this week has been one of the most fulling experiences of his life. “They are so stoked about it — it feels amazing — they are all untrained artists and were able to accomplish this in a matter of four, four-hour shifts,” he said. “They did a great job considering they’ve never done a mural, and in less than 16 hours, they had to paint it.” The museum donated the interior wall near the exit on the first floor of the museum for the mural, and Sherwin Williams donated the paint. Stacy Cline, the director of the museum, first learned of the institution’s CAP while attending the CAP Exhibit at the prison complex in December 2016 and pursued the idea with prison staff. “We are honored that we were chosen for the first mural, they are hoping to do four in total (in other communities),” Cline said. “This is going to be an exhibit here at the museum by itself.” The Museum of Colorado Prisons is located at 201 N.
