March 21, 1942 ~ Dec. 5, 2017 Richard Gerald (Jerry) Graves, of Cañon City, Colorado, passed away Dec. 5, 2017 at the age of 75, from complications of Lewy Body Dementia. Jerry was born March 21, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to Donald and Sue Graves. After graduating from Wasson High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jerry served his country in the United States Navy from 1959-1962. Returning to Colorado, Jerry spent several years in the construction trade, had 20 successful years in auto sales, and closed out his working life as a real estate professional. He enjoyed playing golf and cards with his many friends, and loved watching golf, football and baseball. On March 10, 1990, he married Elisabeth (Liz) Phillips-Graves, who survives him, along with his son, Tim Graves; step-children, Mike (Pam) Phillips and Christi (Jamie) Menefee; brother, Michael (Becky) Graves; sister, Carol (Fred) Beitler; grandchildren, Meghann, Sarah, Juliann, Trevor, Brady, Cassidy, and Kaylee; great grandchildren, Trinity, Addisyn, Lilly, and Quincy. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his son (Rick), and his grandson (Jonathan). A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at Living Stone Calvary Chapel in Cañon City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Fremont Regional Hospice. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. February 8, 1932 - December 6, 2017 Joyce C. Miller, matriarch of our family passed peacefully on Dec. 6, 2017 at the age of 85. She was born Feb. 8, 1932 in Dodge City, Kan., to Harry Dice and Dovie (Daniels) Dice. Joyce moved with her family to Colorado when she was seven years old. She attended Cañon City schools, graduating from CCHS in 1950. She married Fred A. Miller Jr. and had three wonderful children. She was an interior decorator, car salesman and housewife all wrapped in one. She loved her rose gardens and enjoyed to travel. Joyce had a love for cars with her prize possession being her 1976 Rolls Royce. She is survived by her daughter, Trudy Miller; sons, Randy (Gladie) Miller and Troy (Karen Tracy) Miller; sister, Pauline McGuire and special nephew, Barry O’Riley. She is also survived by sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Lena Dice; husband, Fred Miller, Jr.; brother-in-law, Dick McGuire and numerous brothersin-law and sisters-in-law. At her request, no formal services will be held. The family thanks each and every one from First Light Home Care and Sangre De Cristo Hospice for their loving care. Lois Ann Bustos April 17, 1933 ~ Dec. 7, 2017 Lois Ann Bustos, 84, passed away peacefully Dec. 7, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Joe Bustos for 52 years and the mother of Larry (Yencid) Bustos, Jim (Natalie) Bustos, Ben (Erin) Bustos, and Claudine (Alan) Werner. She shared her love with eight amazing grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Lois was born April 17, 1933, in Walsenburg. She grew up on her family ranch, “The Schmidt Brothers Cattle Company” in Gardner, Colorado. Joe and Lois resided in Cañon City since 1963. Lois always being a hard worker spent 28 years in the field of nutrition at St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City. Lois enjoyed many hobbies that kept her very busy. She had a knack to leave her impression on all who met her. She will be missed by all and forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. Linda Jo Six March 18, 1945 ~ Dec. 10, 2017 Linda Jo Six, 72, passed away Dec. 10, 2017. She was born in Arkansas City, Kan., March 18, 1945 to William Coulson and Edna Porth. She met the great love of her life David Six and they were married June 14, 1964. They spent a wonderful 50 years together. Linda loved spending time with her family and friends watching the Broncos, going out to eat, shopping, and going to Cripple Creek with her good friend Cindy. She had a true passion and love for bowling and was on teams in both Cañon City and Florence. Linda is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Tom Prather) Six; two grandchildren, Dillon and Tanner Bellino; numerous nieces and one nephew; as well as brothers-in-law Sid (Gayle) Six and Allen (Sylvia) Six. Florence couple loses home in fire By Sara Knuth The Daily Record From fixing stoves to building front steps for elderly neighbors at no charge, Paul Perez said his father regularly helps people when they ask for his assistance. Now that his parents lost everything in a fire, Paul Perez is asking the community to help them, by spreading the word about a GoFundMe page created to raise money for their recovery. Tony and Patricia Perez, who live on Brewster Lane in Florence, lost nearly everything in the fire, which started at about 10 p.m. Friday. They were able to save their two dogs and escape from the fire uninjured, but since their home is more than a century old, most of their belongings were either burned or covered in asbestos. Tony Perez said they don’t know the exact cause of the fire yet, but he thinks it might have been electrical. When it started, Pat Perez said she noticed that lights above her bedroom came on and wouldn’t turn off, even when she hit the switch. At first, she thought Tony Perez, who slept in a different room, might have been playing a joke on her. “And so, pretty soon, she could hear a little noise, like little crackling, like I had dropped something,” Tony Perez said. “She hadn’t quite fallen asleep. So, she got up and was going to turn the light off and didn’t see me anywhere. But it just flickered.” Unsure of the source of the flickering, Tony Perez went outside to turn off the home’s electricity. That’s when he noticed the smoke. “I looked up above, and there’s a vent,” Tony Perez said. “And you could just see the smoke just billowing out.” Pat Perez added: “And there was just smoke everywhere. I was in my robe and the oldest Crocs I have, and I dialed 911 for the fire department.” As firefighters responded, they watched from a neighbor’s home, where they stayed. By the time the flames were put out, Tony Perez said, it was 6 a.m. Their home, built in 1884 by Italian immigrants, had two ceilings, one that was originally 10 feet tall and another that was 8 feet. It also had two sections that were added to the original building, which once was home to the immigrants’ 18 children. Pat Perez’s bedroom was right below where they think the fire started. The night of the fire, Tony Perez said, the couple went to bed later than they normally do. “She probably wouldn’t have heard anything until the roof fell on top of her,” he said. “So, that was the area where it looked like the fire had started.” Tony Perez also said they were only able to escape the fire with the clothes they had on, his medication, wallet and Pat Perez’s purse. By looking into the home’s windows, they could see that a few items survived, including a photo of their late daughter. “There’s a lot of things — you can’t replace them,” Tony Perez said. “You can’t just go in.” As the couple makes a plan to move forward, they’re splitting their time between staying in a fifthwheel trailer on their property and with Tony Perez’s sister in Colorado Springs. The couple, married for 52 years, said they plan to rebuild in Florence. “That’s the important thing because we do love it here,” Tony Perez said. Pat Perez said she appreciated the work of the firefighters, who battled the flames all night. “The firemen were just incredible, how quickly they showed up and how hard they worked,” she said. Darden named Fremont County Employee of the Year By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Twenty-one county employees were nominated for the annual, prestigious Employee of the Year award, but only one nominee can walk away with the honor. Sid Darden, the environmental health officer for Fremont County, took the honors this year. Darden has served in the position nearly 31 years. He began his work in Fremont County on Jan. 2, 1987, first having been contracted through El Paso County until the end of 2004. He retired from El Paso County and became an official employee of Fremont County three days later. The only thing that changed about his job was the paperwork, he said. Darden said he comes from a family and a generation where once you get a job that you like and you’re good at it, you keep it. “I really enjoy it,” he said of his job. “There is a level of comfort when you have the same job and people know you and things aren’t changing.” The county has about 340 employees. Nominees for the Employee of the Year award are submitted by staff members, not department heads or elected officials. The nominations then are
reviewed and voted on by the county’s eight elected officials. Commission Chair Debbie Bell said Darden was nominated based on his “dependable, efficient and unfailingly punctual service.” His nominator said he is always willing to take on difficult projects, and he is dedicated to his department and his responsibilities. Darden is responsible for inspecting schools, restaurants and child care centers for the State Health Department, and he is the rabies specimen coordinator for the county. He served as the interim director of Fremont County Department of Public Health and Environment for two months while the county was working to fill that position earlier this year. Darden said to have been selected out of 21 nominees is an honor, and it’s nice to be recognized by his peers and the elected officials. “It’s amazing,” Darden said. “I know a lot of those folks and I know a lot of them have been here for a long time — I know from the way things were described they all do really good jobs in their particular positions, so I am kind of astonished that they picked me. “It’s one of the nicest honors that I’ve ever gotten. It’s very nice.”

Owners Dan and Janelle Nelsen discovered Siblings — two polished diamonds that are cut from the same piece of rough — during their annual trip in October to buy diamonds in Antwerp, Belgium. “They usually cut one diamond from one piece of rough to try to maximize the size of the diamond for price reasons,” Dan Nelsen said. “What they did here is they cut two diamonds out of one rough so a mom and daughter or husband and wife can wear the same diamond.” Out of about 240 sets of Siblings that are securely stored in a vault in Antwerp, Nelsen’s Fine Jewelry has three of them available for sale. One other country has purchased one set, but Nelsen said the jeweler in Antwerp has not yet begun to market Siblings anywhere in the world. “You can’t go anywhere in the United States and buy these right now,” Nelsen said. “To me, this is going to be the new thing in diamond buying because how cool is it to have your loved one have the same diamond you wear.” One diamond in each set is larger than the other, and the grade sometimes will be different, Nelsen said. The three sets Nelsen’s Fine Jewelry currently have include either a half-carat, threequarter carat or one carat as the larger diamond. “What’s nice about it is if right now your husband buys you a diamond, and you buy him a diamond, yours might have come from Africa, and his might have come from Russia — this

Kiewit Infrastructure will have improved 12 Cañon City streets by end of year By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Motorists by now likely have noticed fewer potholes and a smoother ride in several parts of Cañon City. Kiewit Infrastructure will have improved 12 streets by the end of the year, including Mariposa Road, Yale Place, East Main Street and Orchard Avenue. Hunter Sydnor, the public information officer for Kiewit Infrastructure who was awarded the design/build street improvement project by the City of Cañon City in April, gave an update during the Dec. 4 city council meeting. She said during the heart of the project this
summer, there were about 90 people working on roads, 20 of whom were local residents. Sydnor said looking ahead, Kiewit is the best partner to tackle the 2018 street projects, including Park Avenue from Ninth to 12th Street; Field Avenue from Central Avenue to High Street; Forge Road from Bellows Court to Howard Driveway; and 12th Street from U.S. 50 to Main Street. Kiewit has developed most of the design work already, leading to a cost savings right off the bat, Sydnor said, and if the city partners with Kiewit, they can lock in 2017 prices on concrete and asphalt. She said the company has put in bids for other local projects
at 18 to 20 percent lower than competitors. “We believe that we’ve provided a lot of value for your money,” she said. “We were about 18 percent less than our next competitor for the projects this year — when we provided extra savings, the city was able to add more projects in.” In addition to the already scheduled $8.5 million in roadwork, the city received 23 percent more new roadway, 56 percent more new curb ramps, 30 percent more tons of asphalt, 87 percent more curb and gutter, 100 percent more underdrain/ curb/gutter and 100 percent more new sidewalk on 16th Street. Kiewit also reinvested about $2.5 million back
