In Loving Memory Walter Griffin May 3, 1936 ~ Nov. 21, 2017 Walter Bryant Griffin, 81 passed away Nov. 21, 2017. He was born in Prescott, Arizona on May 3, 1936, to Lawrence Elwood Griffin and Josie May Griffin. Walter joined the Navy in 1953, where he specialized in cryptography. He went on to have careers in law enforcement, Department of Corrections and was an accomplished business owner. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gold sleuthing and spending time with his family. He was a member of many organizations including Shadow Hills Country Club as well as being a lifelong member of “The Breakfast Club”. He is survived by his son, Todd Bryan Griffin; daughter, Shelly Dawn Griffin; sisters, Lawana and Gwen; brothers, David and Harold; grandchildren Hannah, Holly, Hope and Benjamin Griffin. He was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Griffin; mother, Josie May Griffin; two brothers, Lawrence and John Griffin; sister, Kathleen. Robert Allan Grindinger Jan. 13, 1956 - Nov. 19, 2017 Robert Allan Grindinger, age 61, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, in Rockvale. Robert was born Jan. 13, 1956 in Denver to John and Doris Grindinger. He graduated from Utah State University in Logan, UT. After many years, he returned to school to earn his teaching certificate from Fort Lewis College in Durango. He then taught for 20 years at Florence High School in Florence before he retired in 2013. He had many passions but bee keeping, skiing, hiking, reading, writing, and his dog Kira were his true loves. Robert is survived by his parents John and Doris Grindinger; sister Shari; nieces Kelsey, Camille and Cara; and nephews Christopher and TJ. Instead of a formal funeral there will be A Celebration of Life next year, time and date will be announced at a later date. For everyone who knew Bob, we ask to please leave the flowers for the bees and any donations can be sent to the Sierra Club.
Ann Kelly Dec. 26, 1958 - Nov. 17, 2017 Beloved granddaughter, daughter and mother passed away at home in her sleep on Nov. 17, 2017. She is survived by her son Quinn Dumas Slade. Ann was a life-time Colorado resident and her family lived on a ranch in Southern Colorado. The Kelly’s were active in the community of Penrose Colorado. Ann continued that tradition. March 4, 1923 - Dec. 4, 2017 Dorothy Fern (Jacobs) London, 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 4, 2017, in Cañon City. Dorothy was born to Frank and Frances Jacobs on March 4, 1923, in Crandall, Texas. She graduated from Pyron High School and went on to graduate from Draughn’s Business College in Abilene Texas. On July 6, 1945, she married Lawrence Alton London in Sweetwater Texas. They were happily married for 48 years and built a beautiful life together. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry (Sharon) London of Arlington, TX; her daughter and son-in-law, Dawn (Ronald) Claflin of Cañon City, CO; grandchildren, Britt (Kendra) London, Blake London, Brooke (Brian) Dignan, Lisa (Mike) Tedesko, Lori (Jason) Hendress. Dorothy also had 15 great-grandchildren; Jace (Peyton) London, Morgan London, Lorin Tedesko, Ali Tedesko, Kolby London, Justice London, Brianna London, Sydney London, Grace Bressler, Brayden London, Ainslee Dignan, Evan Dignan, Rylee Hendress and Ryann Hendress. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Frances Jacobs; sister, Frances Huntzicker; husband, Lawrence Alton London and granddaughter, Heather Dawn Claflin. Dorothy was a devout Christian and a treasure to all who knew her. She had a smile that could light up any room and loved her family and friends deeply. She became a member of the Wastella Baptist Church in Roscoe Texas after trusting the Lord as a teenager and was a longtime member of Lamar Street Baptist Church in Sweetwater Texas. She was very active in her church and enjoyed teaching Sunday school for many years. Dorothy was known for being a fervent prayer warrior for anyone who crossed her path. While living in Texas she was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Tau Theta Chapter in Roscoe Texas, the West Texas Porcelain Art Club in Sweetwater Texas and the Cottonwood Home Demonstration Club in Sweetwater Texas. After moving to Colorado in 2005, she joined the First Southern Baptist Church in Cañon City. She was also a member of Women’s Connection and Fourmile Community Club of Cañon City. Dec. 2, 1951 - Nov. 29, 2017 On Nov. 29, 2017, Margie Myers was taken peacefully by her right hand to her eternal home in Heaven to be wrapped in the arms of her Heavenly Father. She fought a tough and rapid battle with cancer, and was brave to the very end. Marjorie Elaine Lallemand was born to Andrew and Helen Lallemand in Cañon City. She graduated from high school there in 1970. The last 43 years she spent enjoying her life in the mountains around Durango. Margie was an independent and strong woman. She successfully ran three businesses over many years: Photography by Margie, Simpler Times Crafts Store, and Arts and Crafts Fair Productions (which just concluded its 43rd annual Christmas show). All her businesses displayed her talents, creativity, and her love for people of all ages. She loved gardening, the outdoors, photography, writing cards/letters for all occasions, journaling, poetry, reading, traveling, and being surrounded by friends and family. Margie will always be remembered for her beautiful personal relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her kind and gentle smile, her seeing everyone and everything through the eyes of God, her adventurous spirit and love for traveling all over the world, and her always believing in people and their dreams/goals, especially encouraging her grandchildren to follow their hearts. She prayed over all her family faithfully for guidance and for them to shine their lights for Jesus wherever their journeys would lead them. Her biggest blessings were her two daughters and their families, as well as many lifelong, genuinely true friends from every walk of life. Margie always saw the beauty in everything around her, in God’s creation, in the hearts of people, and in her legacy and faithful example that will never be forgotten. Margie is survived by her two daughters, Monica (Mark) Dixon of Montrose, CO and Trisha (Keith) Hickerson of Farmington, NM; her granddaughters, Allyssa and Kelsee Dixon, and Megan Hickerson; her grandson, Kyle Hickerson; her brothers, Wayne Lallemand of Cañon City, CO, Larry (Denise) Lallemand of Cañon City, and Dale Lallemand of Salida, CO; several nieces and a nephew, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Helen Lallemand. Her “Celebration of Life” will be held Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Valley Church, 1328 CR 501, Bayfield, Colorado. Her daughters request that everyone dress bright and colorful to celebrate the life of their mom. Jan. 1, 1929 - Dec. 4, 2017 Norma Louise Cooper, 88, of Penrose, passed away Dec. 4, 2017. She was born to Chester and Ruth (Hendy) Ruckman who welcomed her into the world on New Year’s Day 1929. Norma married Paul Cooper, the love of her life in 1950 and was so happy to have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary with him this past April. Norma and Paul moved to Colorado in 1972 and operated JC Cooper, Inc., an RV parts and service business they ran together in Cañon City. When she wasn’t busy raising their three children and helping her husband in their business, Norma loved to paint. Loved wife, mother and grandmother, Norma will be greatly missed by her husband, Paul; daughter, Marilyn Bartley; and sons Lari Cooper and John Cooper; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Norma’s family would like to recognize and thank the nurses, CNA’s and staff of Progressive Care Center for always treating Norma like she was their own mother. Toys, monetary donations collected locally stay in Fremont County By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record It’s not uncommon for some families to have to choose between paying a utility bill or purchasing Christmas gifts for their children. That’s where Toys for Tots comes in to help these families in need. The local Toys for Tots campaign has partnered this year with Hope for the Holidays, a Christmas food box and toy distribution event for families in need. This will be a one-stop shop for Christmas food boxes and toy distribution from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 16 at Mountain View Core Knowledge School, located at 890 Field Ave. The deadline to sign up is Sunday. Food boxes must be signed up for separately by calling Loaves & Fishes at 719-275-0593, also by Sunday. Toys for Tots assistant coordinator Tanna Prentiss said families who miss that deadline or who are not participating in Hope for the Holidays may still register for toys past the deadline and pick up their toys during a distribution Dec. 20 at 427 Main St. New this year, birth certificates, school identifications, Social Security cards or any other form of legal identification for the children is required for pick up of toys. Additionally, the person who filled out the request for toys application must be the one to pick up the toys. Proper identification is mandatory, including a driver’s license or other photo identification. In 2016, the local program served more than 900 children, with each child receiving about three toys each. Prentiss said more than 800 children already are signed up for this year’s distribution. Organizers plan to give each child two toys, and each family will receive a ball and a family board game. Prentiss said they are especially in need of items for girls ages 10 and older, including curling irons, make-up kits, jewelry, purses, nail polish and body care products. Carl Clink, the coordinator for the local campaign, said all toys and monetary donations collected locally stay here stay in Fremont County. “Every dollar that we collect in our ammo box as a donation goes to the foundation, then it is converted onto my Toys for Tots credit card to spend on toys for our local community,” he said. Queen Anne set to close tea house, reopen as prime rib house By Sara Knuth The Daily Record After 10 years in business, the owners of the Cañon City Queen Anne are swapping out their teacups and lace tablecloths for silver carts filled with reverse-seared prime rib. The teahouse and fine dining restaurant, located at 813 Macon Ave., is celebrating its 10th anniversary today and has plans to permanently close the tea service Dec. 23. It will reopen the week of Valentine’s Day as the Cañon City Queen Anne Prime Rib House. “That’s kind of bittersweet because it’s been 10 years,” said Linda Ballard, the restaurant’s co-owner and chef. “And so many of the ladies just love coming, but lunch and dinner are a little bit more than what we can do anymore. We need to de-stress, I guess you’d call it, just slow it down a little bit.” But while Linda Ballard and her husband and co-owner, Al Ballard, have plans to slow down, they’re not coming to a complete stop. In addition to the prime rib house, which will be open for a smaller number of days during the year, the couple is planning to start two new seniorfocused businesses: interior design services and bus show tours. “Linda is going to do consulting for interior design for seniors,” Al Ballard said. “And I’m going to do senior bus tours. So, we’re still going to do those two businesses in addition to doing the prime rib house.” As part of the new fine dining experience, the Ballards will serve prime rib cooked by using a reverse-searing technique, which calls for baking the meat first and then finishing it on the grill. To give customers a personal dining experience, the couple will bring the meal out on a silver cart and serve each item directly to them. “We get right in front of the customer, and we cut their personal slice of prime rib and serve it right in front of them,” Al Ballard said. “So, it’s not a typical restaurant service where someone comes out with a plate, puts it in front of you — there’s actually a presentation that comes with it.” Additionally, Linda Ballard said that during its decade of serving high tea dinners, the restaurant has become known for its steak marinade, which is something they plan to keep as they transition to the prime rib house. “We’ll still have the wonderful marinade that we use, have used, for 10

That’s a winner.” For their customers who don’t like prime rib, Linda Ballard said they plan to serve Cornish hens. Other menu items will include appetizers, speciallyprepared bread, house wine, hot or cold French press coffee and tea, hand-tossed salads, air-popped bakes potatoes and a selection of desserts. Linda Ballard said the prime rib house will be open Fridays and Saturdays for most of the year. In the rest of their time, the Ballards plan to focus on their other new businesses. The ideas for the new businesses came from the Ballards’ experiences serving customers at the Queen Anne. Linda Ballard, who worked as an interior designer before opening the Queen Anne, said many of her customers are seniors. In the time she has spent serving them, they’ve opened up about wanting live in their own homes, not necessarily in assisted living facilities. “And I said, ‘Well, as an interior designer, I could help you downsize, I could help you with doing an ADA
bathroom, maybe putting an ADA ramp on your place, and getting you into a point where you’re safe in your home,’” she said. “So, that kind of gave me the idea. Why not help them go do that?” The senior show tours, which will start in the spring, will be hosted quarterly, with the Ballards acting as tour guides. Al Ballard said destinations include Branson, Mo., Nashville, the Smoky Mountains and one more area that has yet to be determined. They also plan to take care of all of the seniors’ travel necessities — “their bus rides, the tickets, the meals, their luggage, that sort of thing,” Linda Ballard said. “So, a lot of sweet little ladies love to do that because they don’t like to travel alone. But at least if they’re with a group of people that they know ... I think they’re comfortable with being with us.” When the Ballards are gone on tours, they will close the prime rib house. Al Ballard said they plan to keep an updated calendar on their website for customers. As the Ballards plan to transition to
their new businesses, they said some of their best moments in the past decade have included the special events they have been part of in people’s lives. From a 15-year-old girl who has spent every birthday at the Queen Anne since she was 5 to serving people from all over the world, the couple has been part of several memories. They said their goal has always been to serve people. “That’s kind of our gift,” Linda Ballard said. “We feel good when we’re doing that.” But as they open the tea house, Al Ballard said customers can expect the same level of service. “We call them moments of magic and memories. We truly try to create something that when people walk away from something, they don’t forget it,” Al Ballard said. “If people have experienced the Queen Anne in the past, the transition to the prime rib house will be pretty natural to them.” For more information about the restaurant, visit the canoncityqueenanne. com.
