In Loving Memory Amanda Marie Shaw Baggett July 17, 1971 ~ Oct. 26, 2017 Amanda Marie Shaw Baggett passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, at her home in Westcliffe. She was born in Anahuac, Texas, on July 17, 1971, to her mother, Donna Shaw, and was raised by her grandparents, Ross and Lillian Shaw, in Fannett, Texas. Amanda was married to her husband, Donovan Baggett, for 25 years and had two beautiful children, Michael and Summer Baggett. Amanda moved to Colorado in 1996 and was an active member in the communities of both Westcliffe and Cañon City, where she was involved in many activities and events, such as the Blossom Festival. She had been GM at The SomeWhere Saloon for over four years, working with her husband at locations in both Westcliffe and Cañon City. She is survived by her husband, Donovan Baggett; their children, Michael and Summer; mother, Donna Bradley; stepfather, Andy Bradley; siblings, Charles Rivoire, Ross Rivoire, Cole Rivoire, Valita Shaw, Russell Turner, and Frank Shaw. Albert D. Giek April 15, 1927 ~ Oct. 30, 2017 Albert Dale Giek, age 90, born April 15, 1927 was called home to be with our Lord October 30, 2017. He will be remembered by his children, Karen (Don) Emery, Terri (Arthur) Kelm, as well as by his many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Shirley, whom he married after returning home to Peru, Indiana after serving as an Army Staff Sargent in Italy during WWII. He was an engineer and an excellent “fix-itman” all his life. Albert and Shirley moved to Colorado from Indiana in 1978, where Albert continued to work as an engineer in the Denver area before retiring to Cañon City. He was a longstanding member of St. John Lutheran Church and lived in Cañon City until his recent admission to the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Walsenburg. April 14, 1949 ~ Oct. 27, 2017 James (Jim), loving husband, brother, and uncle, is best described by his life of service. Upon graduation from college during the conflict in Viet Nam, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served until his retirement as a Major in 1991. He then served the New Mexico Supreme Court until his retirement from public service in 2012. Jim’s significant service in the Masonic fraternity touched the lives and Masonic experiences of men throughout the United States, especially in Colorado and New Mexico. He was raised by his father at Ashlar Lodge #115 in Fowler, Colorado in 1974. He served as Worshipful Master of Sandoval Lodge #76 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico and was very active in several New Mexico lodges, also serving New Mexico Grand Lodge as a District Deputy Grand Master. At the time he joined the Celestial Lodge above, he was secretary of Mt. Moriah Lodge #15 in Cañon City, serving the Colorado Grand Lodge as a District Lecturer. He dedicated himself to Southern Colorado Consistory, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, in many roles. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William J. and Doris (Koon) Coberly; brother, Thomas and sister-inlaw, Margaret Lavern Chandler. He is survived by his wife, Marsha; brother, David (Jean); sister-in-law, Ruth; brothers-in-law, Alvin, Dick (Rose), Robert (Audrey); numerous nephews and nieces; many Masonic brothers and their families, as well as other friends. Aug. 7, 1939 ~ Oct. 26, 2017 Betty Lou Field, 78, of Peoria, AZ, passed away on October 26, 2017. Betty was born August 7, 1939 in Cañon City, CO, to Eugene and Grace Emery. Betty graduated from Cañon City High School and graduated from University of Colorado in Boulder with a Mathematics degree. She moved to Arizona and became a mathematics professor, and eventually the head of the math department for Scottsdale Community College. While in Arizona Betty met Roger Field and they married on July 21, 1967. Betty and Roger loved traveling and spent summer and winter breaks traveling across the United States, Mexico, Central America and South America. Betty loved to quilt and spent many hours making quilts and attending quilting shows. Betty is survived by her husband, Roger of Peoria, AZ, her brother Eugene (Cheryl) Emery of Cañon City, CO, and her two nieces, Mary Catherine Emery and Betty Jean Emery also of Cañon City, CO.

Briefly Ninth annual Reclaimed Recycled Art Show It is time once again for Reclaimed: The Art of Recycling. This year’s show will run from Nov. 3-25. The show highlights both youth and adult artists and every entry has a minimum of 80 percent recycled content. Recycled Art is all about how art and inspiration can “reclaim” trash. This year’s show will be held at the Fremont Center for the Arts, 505 Macon Ave. The show will open with an Artist’s Reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday. Awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. The public is welcome to attend the Artist’s Reception and meet some of the “Reclaimed” artists. This is an alcohol-free event. As always, admission to the show is free, but donations are cheerfully accepted. Organizers have once again partnered with the Habitat for Humanity of Fremont County ReStore to challenge artists to create works of art with items found in the ReStore. Make sure to look for the “ReStored” entries while visiting the show. The Fremont Center for the Arts will be offering classes in recycled art throughout the month of November. Delbert Ray Geist March 6, 1945 - Oct. 14, 2017 Delbert Ray Geist, 72, of Cañon City, CO, passed away at 7:20 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2017 at St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City from complications of diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, with his wife and special friend, Pat Fraley, at his side. Del was born March 6, 1945 in Pueblo, CO to William and Genevieve Geist. He was raised in Pueblo and attended school there until high school. His family moved to Boulder, CO where he graduated from high school and enlisted in the Navy. He was a Navy Seal and served in Vietnam for two tours. He received an associate degree in Key West, FL. After that he worked for a national computer company for many years and the last years of employment were with the University of Colorado at the University Hospital in Denver. He and Sharon (Armstrong) Wood-Geist were married in Denver, CO March 20, 1993. She survives him. Also surviving are his daughter, Heather (DJ) Blanchard, of Aurora, CO, her children Makya Delgado of Colorado Springs and Zoe Delgado of Aurora, and his step-son Dr. Kristin Wood of Singapore and his children Katie (Matt) Brown, Gracie Wood and Zachariah Wood, all of Texas. Also surviving are two aunts, Rosemary Schmidt and Wanda Schmidt of Kansas, and many cousins, nieces, nephews in Colorado and Kansas. Caregivers and friends Pat and Beth Fraley, Mason and Tristan of Florence has special connections with Sharon and Del. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sharron Philips, his in-laws, Lee and Bert Armstrong and step-son, Brad Wood. At his request, cremation was accorded and no services will be held. July 1, 1949 - Oct. 28, 2017 Linda Joanne Hicks, 68, passed away on October 28, 2017, at her home in Westcliffe, Colorado surrounded by her family. She was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota, on July 1, 1949, to Joseph and Twila Puricelli. She was raised in New Castle, Wyoming and later graduated from Mandan High School in North Dakota. She attended the University of North Dakota for one year majoring in diagnostic technician. On August 29, 1969 she married Ronald Edward Hicks. In 1974, they moved to Dickinson, Texas with their children and she went back to school at the University of Houston-Clear Lake earning a BS in medical technology. She worked for 30+ years as a medical technologist at Danforth Hospital in Texas City, TX, then Clear Lake Regional Hospital in Clear Lake, TX and finally retiring from St. Thomas Moore in Cañon City, CO. Over the years she made it a point to grab as many brass rings as she could and live a life full of adventure. She traveled all over the world, loved to take cruises, and enjoyed playing card games such as “31” and “Hand & Foot” with family and friends. She was a member of the Westcliffe Red Hats and hosted a monthly Bunco group at her home to benefit the local volunteer fire department. She enjoyed making cards and scrapbooking. She also had a gift for writing and recalling family history. She is preceded by her parents Joseph Luis and Twila Juanita Puricelli and sister, Zana Joanne Puricelli. She is survived by husband of 48 years Ronald “Ronnie” Hicks, brother David Dee Puricelli; children Shawn Ronald Hicks, daughter Zana Joanne Perez and, her “Baby” David Dee Hicks; son-in-law Carlos Oscar Perez, daughter in-law Patty Ann Hicks and grandchildren Christian Joseph Perez, Doria Joanne Perez and Jonathan Lee ChafaHicks. A Ceremony and Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, 801 Main St., Cañon City, CO 81212. April 27, 1928 ~ Nov. 1, 2017 Beth “Nadine” Bohl, 89, of Cañon City, fell asleep in Jesus November 1, 2017. She was born April 27, 1928 to Lew and Bessie Waters in Brush, Colorado and she kept in contact with her Brush classmates and friends up until the time of her passing. Nadine married Henry Holt Richardson in 1945 and in 1962, they relocated to Cañon City, Colorado. After his death, she met and married Harlan F. Bohl in 1966 and they raised a “yours, mine and ours” family. Nadine is survived by her sons, Robert Richardson, William Richardson; daughters, Rosalie Evans, Bonnie (Bohl) White, Mary Lou Elliott and step-daughter, Sherry Fischer. Very dear to Nadine were 19 grandchildren, 25 greatgrandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Granny”. Also dear to her were extended family from both marriages, to include many nieces and nephews, long-time friends, and her church family. Family visits, reunions, cards and letters were always a great source of enjoyment to her. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harlan F. Bohl and Henry H. Richardson; children, Beth Mings, George Richardson and step-daughter, Sandra Travis. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Bessie and Lewis Waters; siblings, Lois George, Everett Waters, Edith Lantz, Erma Haney; grand-daughters, Jerri Decker, Erica Elliott and daughter- in-law, Joann Richardson. A member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Nadine was sustained through her strong faith and was avid in Bible study and is remembered by many for her generous heart. Nadine loved reading, puzzles of all kinds, such as crossword and word search, and of course, always enjoyed her TV favorites, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She loved cooking and baking; family favorites included her bread, cinnamon rolls, banana bread and cookies. June 22, 1927 ~ Oct. 24, 2017 Betty Maifeld went to be with her Lord Jesus on Oct. 24, 2017 at the age of 90. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and multi-talented woman. Betty was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to John and Esther Baldridge on June 22, 1927. On August 31, 1947, she married Darrel Maifeld, who preceded her in death, along with their daughter, Betsy (Juan) DeLaCruz. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy (George) Photos, of Wetmore, Colorado, Mary Maifeld (Larry Carucci), of Bozeman, Montana, Linda Maifeld, of Cañon City, Colorado; four grandchildren, Corinna (Kevin) Photos, J.D. (Dana) Photos, Iliana Maifeld-Carucci, Akeo Maifeld-Carucci and brother, John Baldridge. Betty began college at the age of 17, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree from Iowa State in 1948. She received her first teaching certification in 1948, instructing in the fields of home economics and elementary education. In 1970, she earned her Master’s Degree through Kansas State University. During the years of nurturing a raising family, Betty and Darrel would spend almost every summer camping in Colorado. Betty worked as a teacher until her husband’s retirement from the YMCA. At that point, she and her husband purchased and operated a commercial laundry in Granby, Colorado for 12 years. They moved to Cañon City in 1991. Betty remained very active in the community, volunteering time in many areas of her church and to the literacy program. She shared her love of gardening, cooking and sewing with many friends and family members and was an avid seamstress and quilter. Many people will remember seeing Betty with one of her two labs, Hershey and Penny. Celebration of Life, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 31, Solid Rock Christian Fellowship, 4501 Bear Paw Road, Florence, Colorado. Betty will be laid to rest next to her husband and daughter in Evergreen, Colorado at a later date. March 31, 1997 - Oct. 30, 2017 Douglas Crayton Kelso, 20, passed away on October 30, 2017. He was a resident of Colorado Springs and was formerly a resident of Florence, Penrose, and Denver. He worked in the Meat Department at King Soopers. Doug was born on March 31, 1997, to Trevor Crayton Kelso and Gypsy Aurora Kelso (Garcia). When Doug was young he loved wildlife, camping and fishing. Later in life he became a great skateboarder, and in recent time he loved boxing out of the BFS boxing gym in Colorado Springs. Doug graduated from Goal Academy High School in May of 2015. He is survived by his parents: Trevor Kelso (April) and Gypsy Kelso; his soul mate, Olivia Uthaiwat; his siblings: Dan Kelso, Sean Kelso, Meghan Swenson and Kara Swenson; his great-grandmother: Grace Kelso; his grandparents: Keith Douglas Kelso, Sherrie Kelso Urban (Patrick), and Kathleen Ann Garcia; and his many numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his uncle Keith Dustin Kelso. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 4, 2017, at Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80910. CCHS marching band takes first at state By Sara Knuth The Daily Record Before members of the Cañon City High School marching band knew how they placed at state on Monday, they walked off the field of their season’s last performance with pride. “They exited the field and were giving each other hugs and crying, and they just felt proud of their last performance, which made me feel good because they didn’t even care what they had placed at that point,” said Josh Race, the band’s director. “They were just happy with what they had done on the field.” Not long afterward, though, the students

Their score was 73.1, up 4.2 points from the regional competition. During the performance, Race said,

the students, along with a crowd of fans, braved temperatures in the 30s to beat their previous score. It was the last time they performed “The Blessing,” which sent them to state from regionals as the No.1 seed. Race said Cañon City

residents turned out in high numbers to watch the performance. “When they walked onto the field, you could hear all the Cañon City people screaming for them, which I think helped with our performance, too,” he said.

Sarah Anne “Sally” Lind Feb. 6, 1932 ~ Oct. 25, 2017 Sarah Anne (Roche) Lind, born February 6, 1932, departed this world and was welcomed into the next by her Lord and Maker, on October 25, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lind. She is survived by four children, Doug Lind, Hilary Lind, Sister Mary Angela RSM, Connie (Lind) Nudelman; four grandchildren, Sarah Lind, Rachel Lind, Nika Lind and Jacob Nudelman. “Sally” was a native of Cañon City and was known by many in the community. The great loves of her life were God, family, music, nature and a little piece of paradise in Montana called East Rosebud Lake. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a Benedictine Oblate. Sally was also involved in the civic theater but perhaps her greatest role and achievement in life was that of being a mother, which she did with great joy, skill and love. Her kind heart and gracious spirit, now in the presence of the Saints, leaves an enormous void here on earth. Vigil service with recitation of the Rosary, 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, St. Michael Catholic Church; Memorial Mass, 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 28, St. Michael Catholic Church, Reverend Jesse Perez officiating, with private inurnment to follow at a later date.
