In Loving Memory Wanda Loretta Hasty Wanda Loretta Hasty, 54 passed away November 15, 2017 in Denver, Colorado. She was born in Austin, Texas on May 9, 1963 to Mae Loretta (Fallin) and Clyde I. Campbell, Jr. On October 10, 1985, Wanda married Timothy Hasty. She was a Christian woman and was involved with the girl scouts. She loved spending time with her family and watching her favorite football team the Dallas Cowboys. Wanda is survived by her husband, Timothy Hasty; son, Tommy Hasty, daughter, Tabitha Hasty; two grandchildren, Bryson Hasty, Carlee Hasty; father, Clyde I. Campbell Jr.; brothers, Clyde I. Campbell III, Allen Campbell; nephews, Clyde I. Campbell IV, Jesse Campbell and her Fallin family in Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mae Loretta Campbell. Mildred L. Barber Millie was born on May 8, 1926, to Frank and Geraldine Luman in Montague, Mass. They later moved to Chartemont, Mass., where she grew up with three other siblings, Stephen, Frank, and Dorcas. She lived there until she met and later married Craig I. Lane on July 22, 1944. They had four children, Linda, Robert, Judy and Janet and lived in Greenfield, Mass., where Craig died, Dec. 14, 1952. Millie remarried Aug. 28, 1953, to Perry A. Barber, they had one child, Terry, Jan. 21, 1960. Milled worked at the University of Massachusetts, and Wilson’s Department Store. She had many hobbies, including sewing, knitting, cross stitch, beading and refinishing furniture. Millie eventually moved from Massachusetts to Colorado to be closer to her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, two husbands, daughter Linda Pings, and son, Terry Barber. She will be missed by her children; Robert (Holli) Lane, Judy Lane, Janet Nye, son-in-law, Robert Pings, grandchildren; Francine (Jeff) Bush, Jessica Phelps, Christopher (Cheslie) Pings, Nicolas Pings, Clayton and many great grandchildren. No service will be held as Millie wished to be laid to rest in Massachusetts next her first husband Craig I. Lane.

Benny Moschetti Benny Moschetti passed away November 16, 2017, in a Colorado Springs hospital. He was born in Brookside, CO., on December 24, 1929, to Rocco and Rose (Carpine) Moschetti. Benny spent most of his childhood in Cañon City, with the exception of a few years in Seattle, WA. He was in the NAVY for 4 years during the Korean War and was very proud of his service
to our country. Benny married Kay Helton in 1965, and they were married 52 years. He was a self-employed excavator and also had a trucking business. Benny enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and everything outdoors. He liked trips to Cripple Creek, and Las Vegas. He loved the Denver Broncos and watching football. Benny was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters; (Minnie, Antoinette, Katherine, Carmella, and Margie), and four brothers; (Carlo, Matthew, Rocky and Nicky). He is survived by his wife, Kay and two children; Kevin Moschetti of FL, and Kimberly (Bob) Pearsall of Colorado Springs. His eight grandchildren; Benny (Teresa) McCollum, Chad (Molly) Orem, Stacie (Jason) Emory, Benjamin Moschetti, Kerri (Ethan) Logan, Becca Moschetti, Kris Moschetti, and Hailey Pearsall and his ten great-grandchildren; Austin and Sophia McCollum, Owen and Chase Orem; Leonard and Oliver (due in December) Emory; Jaxson Moschetti; and Liam, Bryon and Sophia Logan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life was held in Colorado Springs and inurnment will be at Lakeside Cemetery.
Vivian Marietti Vivian Marietti, of Canon City, Colorado passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the age of 96. Vivian was born to Robert and Margaret Crocker on August 1, 1921 in New Castle, New Brunswick, Canada and grew up in Dearborn, Michigan. She was the eldest of six siblings and attended Fordson High School. She married Francis Marietti in 1977 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They moved to Canon City, Colorado in 1985 where they resided for the rest of their days. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, President of the Elkettes, American Legion Auxiliary, Golden Age Center and was a long standing consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Vivian is survived by her son, Stephen Moore of Denver, Colorado; daughters, Karen CalveyMills of Arizona and Joanne Prince of Canon City, Colorado. She is also survived by three siblings, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four step-children. She was preceded in death by her son, Norman Reeves, two siblings, four step-children and her husband, Francis. Vivian will be cremated at Wilson Funeral Home in Canon City, Colorado. Her final resting place will be within the family plot in Westland, Michigan where a graveside service will take place at a future date. She will be forever missed and is now in the arms of our blessed Lord; Jesus is taking care of her in the warmth of His Love. Eternal Love and Gratitude. Comic to host ‘Life is a Joke’ comedy benefit By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Most people remember their holidays as a child surrounded by family and friends with lots of enticing gifts underneath a Christmas tree. But local comic Michael Madone knows all too well the feeling of having no one to help celebrate the season and having no presents to open on Christmas morning. Madone, 21, didn’t have a Christmas the first four years of his life while living in an orphanage in Romania. It wasn’t until he was adopted by Dan and Karen Madone and brought to his forever home in Cañon City that he was introduced to the merriment and magic of Christmas. Madone is hosting a comedy benefit to collect toys and clothing for local children who also may not have the ideal Christmas this year. “I was once in their shoes,” he said. “I just thought it would be cool to do an event like this and give back.” The “Life is a Joke” comedy benefit will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Annex Event Center, located at
507 Main St. The entrance to the upstairs venue is directly off Main Street, and there is no elevator. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission into the show will be a new toy or clothing item suitable for children 12 and younger. Following the show, Madone is working with local agencies to organize and distribute the donations to families in need for Christmas. Those who are unable to attend the event may drop off donations from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Annex Event Center. “This is my way of giving back for the tremendous amount of support from Cañon,” Madone said. “I never would have thought in a million years I would have gotten this much support, especially with the dream I am pursuing of comedy — it’s just been awesome how many people believe in this dream and I’d like to give back somehow.” Madone has enjoyed comedy and making people laugh since he was a young boy. United Presbyterian Church congregation to dissolve after 150 years By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record The doors of the historic United Presbyterian Church at 701 Macon Ave. soon will be closed to its long-standing congregation, but they will remain open for community events and office space for nonprofit organizations. The current congregation and membership voted to bring the congregation to a close, form a new church plant — The Village at Cañon City — and form a nonprofit called the Historic Church Conservancy of Fremont County which will operate and care for the church building and the two adjacent residential properties. Rev. Chris Bower, who was hired to facilitate the new church plant, said the congregation voted in 2015 to plant The Village but didn’t decide until March to dissolve UPC’s current congregation. He said attendance has been declining and the current membership and its resources weren’t enough to keep up the church’s ministries and care for the building. The congregation has declined from 600 in 1969 to about 100 in 2015. Average weekly attendance currently is about 50, Bower said. The last service at United Presbyterian Church will be at 9:45 a.m. Dec. 31. Bower said about a third of the congregation will be directly involved with the small groups through The Village, about a third will be indirectly involved by helping out occasionally, and the other third will be seeking out traditional Sunday services. “All of the 50 or so who remain are very supportive of what we are doing, even if they don’t necessarily want to be a part of it,” he said. The Village at Cañon City will be headquartered at The Village Depot, located at 119 N. Fifth St.
Presbyterian Church History This year, Presbyterians celebrated 150 years in Cañon City. The UPC is the result of the merger of
three congregations: Cumberland Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church and United Presbyterian. The Mount Horeb Cumberland Presbyterian Church was founded in 1867 as the first of its denomination in Colorado and the first church to have a parsonage in Cañon City, according to archives at the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center. The land was donated by Cañon City’s founder, Anson Rudd. The church was built in 1868 at the northwest corner of Fifth Street and Macon Avenue. The church merged with the First Presbyterians in 1908 and donated the building to the YMCA . The First Presbyterian Church was formed by Rev. Sheldon Jackson in 1872 and began meeting on alternate Sundays in a building shared with the Baptist Church. They later built a wooden-frame church in the 500 block of Macon Avenue and in 1902 built the church at Seventh Street and Macon Avenue. The church grew from 10 to 600 members by 1966. The United Presbyterian Church began in 1898 as a Community Mission Bible School and in 1900 was founded as United Presbyterian Church. It joined First United Presbyterian Church in 1966. The church building was admitted into the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Historic Church Conservancy of Fremont County plans to take over maintenance of the building
A newly-formed non-profit organization called the Historic Church Conservancy of Fremont County plans to take over the operation and care of the historic church building and its two adjacent residential properties. John Stiehl, the vice president of the HCC, said the church will be open for worship services, drama, musical and art productions, corporate events, conferences, weddings and funerals. Some of the space will be repurposed for housing offices for non-profit organizations. The two residential
Cañon City Chamber Christmas Parade of Lights set for Dec. 2 along Main Street The Cañon City Chamber Christmas Parade Committee will host the 29th annual Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. Dec. 2. This year’s theme is “An Old Fashioned Christmas.” The parade set up area has been moved to the downtown area. Entries will set up on Main Street between Third and Sixth streets. The Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center will be presenting a drop-in program on historic holiday crafts. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own Victorian holiday card.
