In Loving Memory Marlys M. Busch
Dec. 29, 1938 ~ Nov. 9, 2017 Marlys Marlene Busch passed away Nov. 9, 2017. She was born in Canon City Dec. 29, 1938 to Walter and Eunice McDowell. Marlys met Eugene, a soldier based at Fort Carson, when she was 16 years old and they were married for 59 adventurous years. They had two children, Mecque and Tom Busch. Marlys enjoyed bowling, crocheting, cooking, Cripple Creek and the Broncos and was always a willing partner to ride anywhere and to do anything Eugene wanted to do. They owned many different businesses and traveled all over the United States. She loved her two children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews very much. Marlys was a precious, sweet soul, never complaining and always a great listener to her family. Marlys is survived by her sister, Jean (Dale) Roberts; sister-in-law, Becky McDowell; daughter, Mecque (Bart) Southern-Nesmith; grandchildren, Casey Southern, Corey (Brandy) Southern, Jacob (Jaimee) Southern, Brian (Kellie) Busch, Bradley Busch, Colin Busch; great-grandchildren, Kaden Southern, Shayla Busch, Alexis Busch, Lacie Busch; and her dear friend, Barbara Thacker. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, Walter McDowell and Eunice McDowell-Goode; son, Tom Busch, who passed in 2012; brothers, Ronnie McDowell, Darold McDowell; and husband, Eugene Busch. A celebration of life for both Marlys and Eugene will be held next Spring in the mountains, where their ashes will be scattered together. The family would like to acknowledge the Sangre De Cristo Hospice ladies for their dedication and tender loving care of Marlys. A special thanks to Rae Ferguson, her care companion. Ronnie Stewart Aug. 31, 1955 - Oct. 31, 2017 Ronnie passed away peacefully in his sleep after losing his battle with cancer. Ronnie was born in Albuquerque, N.M., to Eddie and Macie Stewart. They moved to Cañon City when he was 2 and was raised here. He graduated in 1974 and married his high school sweetheart, Karen (Brittain) Stewart of 42 years. Ronnie was a jack of all trades; he drove a truck for Valco Concrete for 10 years and then went to work for a hot tar roofing company. He was also a volunteer fireman. He then went to school in Kansas City and opened his own auction company. 5 years later he worked for an insurance company and then became a Bail Bondsman for 21 years. During this work, he built and opened his own bar, Cell House 7. He then retired and has been enjoying his family and farm. Ronnie was always high on life, fun to hang out with and one of a kind. We will all miss his enthusiasm, orneriness, and unique personality every day that we live our lives. Ronnie is survived by his soul mate and loving wife, Karen; two children, Justin (Tanah) Stewart and Casey (Jay) Hudson; sister, Becky (Dick) Murray; three grandchildren: Questin, Bella, and Ryder; nieces and nephews: Lori (Kevin) Alexander, Shane (Darci) Hale, Jennifer (Jim) Coulson, Jared (Maria) Sullivan, Tara Tollie; father-in-law, Jim (Wanda) Brittain; sisters-in-law: Susan (Mike) Rush, Rhonda (Bob) Berry, Jamie Champagne; and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Eddie and Macie Stewart and brother Eddie Stewart. A Celebration of Life will be held at 701 Windsor in the arena Nov. 18, 2017, Saturday from 11 a.m. until the cows come home.

CSU Extension Agent Covington honored for his ‘superior service’ By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Fremont County CSU Extension Agent Tommy Covington was presented Wednesday with the coveted Alton Scofield Distinguished Service Award from Colorado State University for his “superior service” to the people of Colorado through extension education. The Fremont County Extension is the off-campus educational arm of CSU that provides information and education to the community. The Alton Scofield Award recognizes outstanding performance by an extension professional throughout their career. “It’s a highly honored, prestigious award based on value and commitment to extension and providing service not only to a community but to a state,” said William Nobles, the regional director at CSU Extension. Nobles said the award recipient must be nominated and then approved by CSU Extension Director Lou Swanson. The Scofield award also comes with a monetary award of $500. “I was very proud and excited,” Covington said about receiving the award. “It is a great honor. Being honored to get it is really very special.” Covington has been with the Fremont County Extension for 22 years. He is the county director and extension agent for Agriculture, Horticulture and 4-H Youth Development. Covington has served on the Florence-Penrose Board of Education for 20 years. He taught

Working for the Extension Office allows him to work with youth, which is what he enjoys most about his job. “We have such super kids,” he said. “It’s so rewarding to work with kids and see them grow and become young adults.” Covington wished to thank his colleagues, especially those in Fremont County, including Verla Noakes, Pam Carl and Becky Chace for their support, as well as his wife, Vikki, whom he said is most responsible for his success. “She supports me and lets me spend as much time as I need to working,” he said. “I also appreciate the county commissioners for their strong support of the whole 4-H program and the extension program in
Fremont County.” A letter submitted by the Fremont County Board of Commissioners endorsing Covington for the award acknowledges his leadership in the development of Pathfinder Park, which eventually will host the entire Fremont County Fair. “He has shown an immeasurable amount of dedication and hard work to create those muchneeded park facilities with limited operational funds,” the letter states. “He often can be found singlehandedly maintaining the grounds at Pathfinder, putting in extra hours to ensure the facilities are ready for horse shows and other events.” Commissioner Tim Payne said Covington’s commitment to the community, in general, is apparent. “He does so much more in the community than just extension for us,” he said. “He’s a treasure.”

Author Davalynn Spencer releases Cañon City collection Award-winning inspirational romance novelist Davalynn Spencer will be signing her latest book, The Cañon City Chronicles, at Tailored West, 502 Main St. during First Friday festivities, from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 1. The Cañon City Chronicles released in October as a compilation of three novels set against the historical backdrop of Cañon City between 1860 and 1888. The revised edition is available for the first time under one cover. “These stories are drawn from Cañon City’s rich Western history and peopled with fictional characters,” Spencer said of the collection. “I’m excited to offer them together as the ongoing tale of the Hutton family during the city’s founding, the Royal Gorge War between two railroads for right-of-way passage through the Gorge and the Bone Wars involving rival paleontologists vying over fossils found in the Garden Park area.” One of Spencer’s three Cañon City collections, Romancing the Widow, earned the Will Roger’s Gold Medallion Award in Inspirational Western Fiction. Her fiction has also landed on Publisher’s Weekly and ECPA fiction bestseller lists. Spencer’s nonfiction work has appeared in Prorodeo Sports News, Western Horseman, American Cowboy, Power for Living, Quiet Hour, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and several other publications. Educators learn safety protocols in training By Sara Knuth The Daily Record Most days, they’re educators. “We’re not law enforcement, we’re not incident commanders. We’re educators,” said Paula Buser, the Cañon City School District’s director of support services. But when a crisis happens, she said, teachers, custodians, administrators and more school professionals become first responders. “We don’t really have a choice but to become educated in it for the safety of our staff and students,” Buser said. In a training Nov. 2, educators from across Fremont County did just that by learning the Standard Response Protocol, a uniform set of safety guidelines that help them respond to critical incidents, ranging from fires to active shooters. The protocol is part of the “I Love U Guys” Foundation, which presented the training. “In most of these events, within 120 seconds, they’re over. So, it’s very quick. And so, the best thing we can do is prepare our staff and students on the right protocol,” Buser said. As part of the protocol, which is followed by all of Fremont County’s school districts, educators learn four responses that apply to different scenarios: lockout, lockdown, find shelter and evacuate.
In an event such as a school shooting, the district’s response is to place buildings in lockdown status by locking doors, turning off lights and keeping children and staff members out of sight. The response is the same kind that potentially saved children Tuesday during a shooting near an elementary school in Northern California. According to a Washington Post report, law enforcement officials said placing the school in lockdown status prevented a “horrific bloodbath” when the gunman couldn’t get inside the school, grew frustrated and then left. During the Cañon City School District training two weeks earlier, keynote speaker John-Michael Keyes, who lost his daughter during a 2006 shooting at Platte Canyon High School and later started the “I Love U Guys” Foundation, told staff members the importance of the method. “No one has ever lost their life behind a locked door in a school shooting. Nobody has ever breached a locked door,” Buser said. “We train people to get behind a locked door, out of sight — locks, lights out of sight — for that reason. The statistics show that is the safest place to be in a school event.” Buser said the district’s insurance provider, Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool, sponsored the training

learning the protocol, being reminded of why we do what we do, how to keep our kids safe,” Buser said, adding that relationships with local law enforcement agencies are strong and crucial to keeping children safe. “I think one of the coolest parts of the day was the region coming together.”
Gobins merges with Corporate Technologies, Inc. By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Gobin’s, Inc announced Monday its merger with Corporate Technologies, Inc. Both firms are headquartered in Pueblo, but Gobin’s has had a facility in Cañon City for more than 40 years. Gobin’s will keep its business name and will continue to operate at its current location at 115 S. Fifth St. Between the two companies, Gobin’s and CTI will be able to offer a broader line of services. Gobin’s is the largest provider of office technology products in Southern Colorado providing copiers, printers and document management systems, as well as technical service and customer service support through seven offices. CTI provides clients in Southern Colorado with IT support, network help, computer service and IT consulting
services. This includes desktop support, server support, network support, IT security, backup and disaster recovery, cloud computing, virtualization and VOIP services, as well as IT Infrastructure support. USFS San Carlos Ranger District and BLM Office begin Christmas tree permit sales The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service will offer Christmas tree permits beginning Nov. 20. Permits may be purchased between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office at 3028 E. Main St. The cost for a permit is $10 per tree with a limit of two trees per household. A BLM permit is valid for trees located
on BLM lands within the Royal Gorge Field Office. A USFS permit is valid for trees located on National Forest System lands within the boundaries of the San Isabel National Forest. Tree cutters must have a valid permit with them while cutting and transporting a tree. Trees may not be cut within a wilderness area, wilderness study area, timber sale area, or administrative sites
such as developed campgrounds. Additional guidelines, tips, and maps of suggested cutting areas are available with a purchased permit. There are several species of trees available depending on location. Tree species include: Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, piñon pine, white fir, spruce and Rocky Mountain Juniper.
