Bertha Snell

April 7, 1933 - Oct. 17, 2017 Dale Bird, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Oct. 17, 2017, at his home in Florence. Born April 7, 1933, in Timmer, N.D., to Theodore and Pearl, Dale was the eldest of four children. As a child, Dale spent his days working on the farm and learning mechanics alongside his Father. After serving four years in The United States Navy, Dale worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Local Union #9, which he later retired. On Dec. 22, 1956, Dale married his beloved wife Patricia and went on to have three children. The family moved to Canon City in 1967. After retiring, Dale enjoyed woodworking, Harleys, fishing and ATV riding. He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his Sister, Alice; two son-in-law’s, Michael M. McWilliams and Wesley I. Widick. He is survived by his children Theodore (Andrea) Bird, Lynnette McWilliams-Widick, Randy (Teddie) Bird; his Brothers, Bob (Nancy) Bird, Raymond (Norma) Bird: His nine Grandchildren; 11 GreatGrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild expected December 2017. Aug. 1, 1934 - Oct. 24, 2017 On Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, Bertha Theresa (Villagrana) Snell, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord, with her Husband and family members by her side. Bert was born on Aug. 1, 1934, in Saguache, Colorado, to Frank and Alice (Martinez) Villagrana. Bert graduated from Florence High School in 1953 and worked at many local businesses and attended an airline hostess school in Nebraska. Bert married Chester D. “Chet” Snell on April 18, 1959, and they eventually made Florence, Colorado their home. She retired from the Florence School District after 20 years of service. Bert was a very active member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, teaching various religious classes for over 30 years and leading prayer meetings in various towns for 18 years. Bert was preceded in death by her Parents and one Grandchild and is survived by siblings Ruben (Nancy) Villagrana, Paul (Jean) Villagrana, and Frank (Phyllis) Villagrana, her loving Husband Chester Snell, children Chester L. (Linda) Snell, Frank (Patty) Snell, Michael (Patty) Snell, Susan Snell, Michelle (Clint) Veatch, fourteen Grandchildren, fourteen Great Grandchildren and one Great, Great Grandchild, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Services will be held at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Florence at 622 W. Second Street. Rosary at 9:15 a.m. and Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Reception to follow after Mass in the Parish Center. Charles Robert Knight

April 20, 1935 - Oct. 21, 2017 Charles Robert Knight went to heaven to be with his family on Oct. 21, 2017. He was born April 20, 1935, in Chickasaw, Okla., to John Knight and Jesse Blair Knight. He married Emma June Mills August 19, 1956. He served in the United States Air Force and the National Guard for 21 years. Charles also retired from the Denver Rio Grande Railroad where he worked on the Bridge Crew. He brought laughter and joy to all who knew him. He enjoyed life and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Emma June Knight, of 61 years, twin brothers Donald Knight and Ronald knight, sons Robert Alva Knight [Michelle], Raymond Dewayne Knight [Delight], James Arthur Knight [Loma], and daughter Charlene Michelle Rodenbeck [Dave], numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. First Friday Artists’ Gallery to host ‘A Fall Mosaic’

During the month of November, The Artists’ Gallery is presenting “A Fall Mosaic,” a spectacular display of artwork by member artists in tribute to Autumn. Volunteer Trail Workday Set for Nov. 4 at Royal Gorge Park Since the Royal Gorge Park was first ceded to the City of Cañon City in 1906, few, if any, established trails have facilitated access to the many stunning vistas. Today, joint efforts have resulted in over 15 miles of new trails that are suitable for hikers, runners and bikers of all ages and abilities. These new trails, however, need a bit of maintenance. On Nov. 4, Fremont Adventure Recreation invites the public to take part in a trail work day. No experience is necessary, as there will be a brief tutorial before the group breaks into smaller work teams and tackles various projects throughout the park. From the scenic Canyon Rim trail, begun in 2015, to the technically challenging Rock Hardy spur, the Royal Gorge Trail system is a true gem in the Royal Gorge Region’s crown. Recent developments have connected the established 3.5 miles of the Canyon Rim Trail to the Elkhorn Loop, the East Ridge Campground, and even lower Fremont Peak. (Construction of the last portion of that particular section is pending due to the difficulty of the terrain.) As the trail system grows, both locals and visitors have marveled at the variety of views that it affords. “You can see the Royal Gorge Bridge from some areas, and the entire city of Cañon City in others,” said FAR board member Brian LeDoux. Trails are designed for fun, usability, and also sustainability. Part of what makes a trail sustainable is that it is designed to ‘melt’ back into the natural environment if not used. Trail designers try to mitigate damage to the natural environment by cutting trail around existing trees and utilizing natural rock features where possible. Keeping weeds at bay and also eliminating invasive species is the challenge, especially after this summer’s heavy rains. Volunteers will assist with weed abatement, clearing rocks that have fallen on the trail, dig post holes for signage, and rake newly cut trails. “The trails belong to our community, and we would love to see a large group come out to help us keep our public recreation areas in great condition,” says LeDoux. “This is a great way to help out, but also to familiarize yourself with the trails if you’re interested in using them.” The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is sponsoring the post-workday lunch at Café 1230. Pizza and salad (as well as free entry to those who do not have passes) will be available for all volunteers who work from 9 a.m. to noon. “The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park has been a tremendous partner in the trailbuilding efforts. They are a 1% for Trails Contributor, which has garnered a substantial sum of money for construction. We are incredibly grateful to have them sign on,” notes Brian VanIwarden, FAR Director. Trails cost about $3 per foot to construct, and various entities, including supporting ‘1% for Trails’ participants, the City of Cañon City, and Fremont Adventure Recreation, have worked hard to secure the funds needed to pay for the new mileage. Volunteers should plan to meet at the parking area at the East Ridge Campgound at 9 a.m. on Nov. 4. (Turn left off of County Road 3A approximately 3.25 miles after turning from U.S. 50.) Work gloves, sturdy shoes, and water are suggested, and a pair of shrub clippers may be helpful (but not required). Additional tools will be provided as necessary, and lunch will be free to all volunteers who complete the session. See joinfar.org for directions. Fabric of the Community First Stitches Quilt Shop & Sewing Store celebrating fifth anniversary By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record In the five years that First Stitches Quilt Shop & Sewing Store has been in operation, the business significantly has grown and expanded. Kimberly and Randy Smith first opened the store in November 2012 in the back section of a Main Street bookstore. They since have moved to their own location at 212 S. Fourth St., expanded that building to add a classroom, and just this year, they opened a new store in Pueblo. Kimberly Smith said the last five years have been “non-stop.” “We keep classes going, we keep new fabrics in — the turnover is great so that way we always have a really good selection of fabric,” she said. “We always offer patterns at a substantial discount — we try to keep out patterns and our books up and keep them at the prices that you can buy them online so that you come in and you actually see the fabric, and you can put the fabric with the pattern.” She said she has a deep passion for sewing, and she realizes it’s a passion for many others, as well. “It really satisfies my soul,” she said. “I know it satisfies a lot of people’s ambitions whether it’s a hobby, or whether it’s something they do that they want to be perfect at, it’s all about the passion — and it’s therapy for a lot of people.” First Stitches is an authorized dealer for Janome, Baby Lock and Bernina. Randy Smith is a certified technician for all those machines. “We try to go to the trainings on a regular basis because we know new machines come out and we need to learn them,” Kimberly Smith said. “We always keep it updated — it’s an

can just practice while we are here.” They also bring in national educators, and they have award-winning fashion designers on staff in both their stores. “We stay very active on social media so we can watch what’s trending, and we try to bring that here,” Kimberly Smith said. Fremont County Sobering Center set to open By Carie Canterbury Daily Record Staff After more than a year of

collaboration among several community partners, Fremont County Sobering Center soon will open its doors to help individuals in need of a safe place to sober up, without requiring medical assistance. The Fremont County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday entered into a contract with St. Thomas More Hospital for operation of the center, which is expected to open Nov. 2. The services will be made available at no cost to the public. Commission Board Chair Debbie Bell said communitywide discussions began in September 2016 with law enforcement, human services, public health, substance abuse specialists, the medical community and St. Thomas More.

Bell said the current model includes someone being referred to the emergency department through an ambulance service, law enforcement or sometimes on their own. They are medically cleared, but they’re not safe to leave, so they end up staying there or going to jail. “This current model uses countless resources that actually can better be used elsewhere,” Bell said. The county’s annual commitment will be about $75,000, but Bell expects to see savings in the resources currently being spent in the Sheriff’s Office to deal with this issue. Without financial means to open a full detox center, alternatives were considered, Bell said. Jim Woodard, the vice president and chief nursing officer at St. Thomas More, found a sobering center model currently used in a couple of states and adapted it to meet local needs. “This will be the first sobering center

model to open here in Colorado,” Bell said. “The center then will provide a clean, safe place for folks to sober up. “I think maybe the most important piece of this, though, is that we are going to continue that care and offer people a hand in getting — and staying — sober.” Under the agreement, St. Thomas More will provide the facility, staffing, equipment and clinical expertise. Fremont County is providing the care manager. Pat Cox, who was hired for the position, will meet the individuals while they are in the center and offer them whatever type of help they might need, including connecting them with services for housing, food, clothing, Medicaid, AA meetings or addiction counseling. The facility will open Nov. 2. Hours will be 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday through Sunday. The facility will close Monday mornings at 8 a.m. and reopen Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. To begin,

individuals will be accepted through law enforcement and/or the emergency department at St. Thomas More. Cox’s office will be located inside the Sobering Center, which will have a separate entrance off the west side of the hospital. “It’s important for people to understand that we believe alcoholism to be a disease, not a moral deficiency,” Cox said. “We are not bad people trying to become good, but rather sick people trying to get well.” Bell added, “The Sobering Center will be much more than a place to sober up. We truly believe it will be a place that is going to change lives.” Bell said organizers realize there is a need for drug detox, as well, in the community, but they feel a need to start small, find some success and if possible, in the future, look at incorporating other substances. She said it’s not a guarantee, but it is a possibility.
