Jan. 13, 1949 - Oct. 9, 2017 Carol Louise Augustine, 68, passed away at her home in Cañon City, surrounded by her loving family on Oct. 9, 2017. She was born Jan. 13, 1949, in Chicago, and it was there that she met Al Augustine, a Chicago policeman and the love of her life, whom she married on her birthday in 1974. Carol owned her own beauty salon in Chicago and enjoyed taking care of her clients that soon became friends. After her husband’s retirement, they made their way to Cañon City, where she continued in hair care, working at Hair It Is. Never one to sit still, Carol kept busy lending her talents to Crafting for Christ at Shephard of the Hills Lutheran Church, volunteering as a member of American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 13, having fun playing BINGO at the VFW or testing the waters in Cripple Creek. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Albert, daughter, Christine Vitel; son, Anthony Vitel; daughter, Marlena Vital; son, Albert (Joanne) Augustine; siblings, Maurice (Connie) Tongate, Rick Tongate and grandchildren, Emilio, Nicolas, Gabrielle, Michella and Camden. Jan. 13, 1955 - Oct. 1, 2017 David Joseph “Joe” Kost died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, in Cañon City. Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy E Kost nee Krill, and his children, Patricia E Loyer and her two children Henry and Robert, Joseph M Kost and Christine A Kost. Joe was born in Worland, Wyo., Jan. 13, 1955, to David L Kost and Ardeth D Kost nee Morris, the oldest of five children, Julianna S Rhoades, Daniel P Kost, Kenneth M Kost, and Mary C Sandvold. Joe personified the independence of the American West. Farm life was dear to his heart having spent his formative years in Wyoming working alongside his family. Joe served in the United States Air Force and graduated from the University of Wyoming. Joe was devoted to the betterment of rural communities through his thirty-year career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Development. Joe directed local, regional, and state programs funding community infrastructure, agricultural land and business development, and rural community homeownership. Acknowledged for his experience, he participated in writing national policy for Rural Development in Washington DC. Joe was beloved, well respected, and recognized in his field for his breadth of knowledge in economic development and for his ability to bridge connections and people. Joe was a founding parent, Treasurer and board member for Core Knowledge Charter School. He was an elder and a puppeteer in the puppet ministry with Christian Family Fellowship. Joe was an avid reader, rarely more than an arm’s length away from a book. When he wasn’t reading, Joe was a self-taught hobby man. He learned calligraphy, whittled, forged his own knives and tomahawks, gardened, curated many collections, and raised an assortment of farm animals. Upon retirement, Joe bred alpaca and harvested their fiber, and began a successful boutique coffee roasting company. Whether reading or at work, he was always ready to greet you with a warm smile. The family asks all that knew Joe to join them in celebrating Joe’s gentle and kind spirit Oct. 14, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Abbey Chapel in Cañon City, reception to follow, and at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Basin, WY, on Oct. 28, 2017, reception to follow. Dorothy May Mauler Oct. 21, 1920 - Oct. 14, 2017

Dorothy May Mauler, 96, passed away October 14, 2017 surrounded by her family. Born October 21, 1920 in JoyCoy, Colorado, Dorothy was one of five children born to Almont and Bessie Dunbar. She grew up in Colorado on her parents’ ranch, where she helped her mother cook for the farm hands, tend the garden, and care for the chickens. At the age of 19, Dorothy met her future husband, Joe Henry Mauler, who worked for her father on the ranch as a mechanic and farm hand. They fell in love and were married in Kansas in 1940. Joe and Dorothy spent 68 wonderful years together until Joe’s passing in 2008. Times were hard for the young couple and in 1945, Dorothy and Joe moved back to the family farm. There, Dorothy helped her family with the bookkeeping and Joe worked as a mechanic in Springfield. They welcomed their daughter, Carolyn Noreen, in Springfield and four years later, welcomed their son, Mark Eldon, in Rocky Ford. Work brought Joe and Dorothy to LaJunta and later

to Cañon City. Dorothy primarily spent her life caring for others. She was a homemaker for her family and children, as well as a den mother for the cub scouts and was the 4-H club leader. She cared for her parents and grandchildren while handling household and business finances for the auto repair company she and Joe owned. Dorothy loved gardening, art, reading, and was a culinary enthusiast. A prayer warrior, Dorothy was a member of the First Christian Church for 60 years, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Christian Women’s Association. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; son, Richard; brother, Bill and sister, Elsie. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Jack) Kivi; son, Mark (Mary Anne) Mauler; brother, Roy I. Dunbar; sister, Ella A. Seyfrit; four grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial Service, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, Holt Family Chapel of the Garden with interment at Mountain Vale Memorial Park and reception to follow. Margaret Javernick March 2, 1922 - Oct. 14, 2017 Margaret was born in Cañon City on March 2, 1922, to James Moreno and Catherine Ricchiuti. She died in Westminster on Oct. 14, 2017. Margaret was born and raised in Colorado. She lived briefly on the western slope on a farm with her aunt and uncle Bena and Jim Procarione. She had a special bond with them and their daughters. She received most of her education from Cañon City schools. After graduation she attended beauty school in Denver. Her first shop was Ye Old Modernette located in the Ott Hotel. She married Joseph John Javernick on March 5, 1946 and had three children Carol (Bert) Huszcza, Joanne (Gary) Shoun and Bobby (ex-wife Maria Fieth) Javernick. Later she reopened her salon, the Modernette, at her home. She enjoyed many activities, especially bowling, events at the Elks club, Eagles Auxiliary and Daughters of Isabella. She moved to Westminster, Colorado to be near her daughter’s and sister after the deaths of her husband and son. The last four years of her life she lived in an apartment at Keystone Place at Legacy Ridge. She was faithful to participation in all activities and was happy when her sister moved in next door. She loved the staff there and it was mutual. Her main focus was her family. Her father preceded her in death when she was a teen. She cared for her mother until her death. Her brother, James (Margie) Moreno; and their children, Noreen (Patrick) Willett and Neil (Vickie) Moreno; and their children and grandchildren; her sister, Mary Ann (Woodie) Teague were a joy to her. She was blessed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jim (Carol) Shoun, Joey and Andrew; Jerrod (Allyson) Shoun, Emma and Samantha; Tiffany (Bret) Haag, Brandon and Ashley; Lacey Huszcza (Dan Stott); Philip Javernick, Joey (Samantha) Stewart, Paige; Loren Javernick. She spent many happy times with the Javernick brothers and their families. Two of her nephews and their wives, living in the area, Harry (Karen) Javernick and Chuck (Carol) Javernick, visited her often and represented the loving, kind and good humored spirit of the Javernicks. It always brightened her day when she was visited by family. She also enjoyed the many cards and notes from family who couldn’t visit, especially from her best friend, Alice Jurjovec; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Javernick, Shirley Javernick and Charlene Javernick-King; and cousins, Bob and Loretta Moschetti. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son and her brother, many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her sister, daughters, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends. She will be missed by all. Instead of flowers or donations, Marge would say “Spend time with your family and friends. The most important thing is being together. “

In Loving Memory Benjamin “Ben” Eugene Gowdy Oct. 19, 1949 - Oct. 10, 2017 Benjamin “Ben” Eugene Gowdy, 67, passed away at the Bruce McCandless State Veterans Home, with his loving family by his side Oct. 10, 2017. He was born Oct. 19, 1949 to Alvin and Doris (Ayres) Gowdy in Tucumcari, NM. Ben graduated from Olathe High School, Class of ‘68 where he was a track and basketball star. After graduation, Ben served his country in the 120th Aviation Unit during the Vietnam War. A hard worker, Ben was a police officer in Woodland Park, he owned his own business working heavy equipment, pulling manufactured homes and was a Manager at Clayton Homes. When he wasn’t hard at work, he found time to hunt, go 4-wheeling, spend time in the mountains and was a longtime supporter of 4-H. A man who loved his family and took every opportunity to spend time with them, especially his grandchildren, but most importantly, Ben loved his Savior and was a firm believer in Christ. He is survived by his children, Jason (Sue) Gowdy, Cochelle (Spencer) Evans, Kimberly (Tom) Briggs; siblings, Wes Gowdy, Jeanette (Larry) Michelin; grandchildren, Keirstyn, Cole, Taylor, Corbin, Kara, Dustin, Peyton and Colton; married to Benita Gowdy for 35 years; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-dad, Mervyn Hall and sister, Wilma Gowdy. Jan. 20, 1947 ~ Oct. 3, 2017 Jimmie Sue Wiedoff, age 70, went to be with the Lord Jesus on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Hildebrand Care Center, a loving care facility, in Cañon City. She was born in Brownsville, Tennessee in 1947, to James Doyle and Mary Nell (Wright). She moved with her family to Peoria, Arizona on July 4, 1950, and attended Peoria School District from Kindergarten through 12th grade. On Oct. 20, 1964, she married Steve Wiedoff in Surprise, Ariz. Jimmie Sue worked for Digital Corporation and later worked for the Arizona Department of Economic Security, until taking a medical retirement. She moved to Cañon City in 1997. Jimmie Sue loved to hike and visit the mountain peaks in Colorado. She loved decorating, crafts, country music and Cripple Creek. But mostly, she loved children. She was a foster parent in Fremont County for several years and “nanny” to some other very special children. In her last days and hours, she kept seeing “the children”. They were very dear to her heart up to her last moments. She is survived by her children, Steven (Anna) Wiedoff, of Glendale, Arizona, Shelly (Frank) Ortiz, of Penrose, Colorado, Herb (Jennifer) Wiedoff, of Buckeye, Arizona; grandchildren, Alexis and Josh Wiedoff, Tyrell Moore, Tiffany Gallegos, Matthew Ortiz, Nicole Ortiz, Gus and Allison Wiedoff; great-grandchildren, Keaton and Amorita Moore, Dalton Ortiz, Nina and Nahla Gallegos; sisters, Mary Ann (Tom) Price, of Sandy Creek, Arkansas, Rebecca (Leo) Odle, of El Mirage, Arizona, as well as many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William David Doyle and Floyd Thomas Doyle; and sister, Peggy Evelyn (Bill) Price. 1932 ~ 2017 Erwin C. Stickley, 85, of Beavercreek, Ohio passed away September 30, 2017. He was born in Bennington, Kansas to the late Malcolm “Bud” and Hilda Stickley in 1932. He grew up in Colorado, loved the mountains, and became an avid sportsman and gardener. Erwin joined the United States Navy in 1950 and honorably served in the Korean War. After his service, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at the University of Denver. Erwin worked in many fields and finished his career as a corrections officer in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was a member of the Xenia, Ohio Masonic Lodge #49 and was active in the Greene County Ohio Master Gardeners. Erwin was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. In addition to his parents, Erwin was preceded in death by his sister, Nadine McDowell, of Cañon City. Ventzislav (Ventzi) Guentchev April 20, 1956 - Oct. 11, 2017 Ventzi Guentchev, 61, of Cañon City, passed away Wednesday, October 11th, after a brief hospitalization. He was born in Sofia, Bulgaria (Europe) on April 20th, 1956, to Ludmil Guentchev, classic singer, and Deshka Guentcheva, military journalist. Because of his mother’s career, Ventzi’ s early life was affiliated with the Bulgarian Army, which he joined at age 18. He served in it as a medic and medical instructor. Upon completing his service, he worked as an electrician and an Opera House worker before being accepted in a graduate program in Psychology, Faculty of Philosophy, at the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. Ventzi graduated with a Master’s Degree with honors and was selected for one of four full scholarships for post-graduate research in Social Psychology. He joined a research group in the Technical University and studied the role of self-concept in the individual’s motivation for growth. After the collapse of the communist regime in 1989, Ventzi was fascinated with the open society opportunities. He founded the National Non-Governmental Organization Home for Everyone and became part of establishing the democratic legislation on housing and residential construction. Ventzi declined becoming a professional politician in favor of remaining a Psychologist and Psychology Instructor in the Bulgarian Fine Art Academy where he developed further his interest and knowledge in art. He was married to Jenni Guentcheva in 1981 and had a daughter Stela

Guentcheva (Coffelt) in 1988. In Europe, Ventzi worked in various research and counseling projects and became part of the standardization and cultural validation of psychological instruments, such as the 20 Sentences Test, Hans Eysenck’s theory of personality testing etc. In 1999, the family followed a US friend across the ocean and became part of the Southern Colorado human services community. Ventzi embraced the challenge of working with adult sex offenders and adolescents who have committed sexual crimes. Along with that, he developed a keen interest in assisting young men with behavioral challenges and traumas succeed in life. At the family mental health practice Goodneighbor LLC, Ventzi worked with his clients on finding selfrespect, emotional safety and stability and enjoy life in the moment as a foundation for personal growth. He modeled these practices in his own life and made a point of taking annual motorcycle rides to the ocean and trips to various countries. Always a dynamic person, he also enjoyed the company of his friends from different countries and walks of life, wild mushroom picking and “hunting” for rare books, prints and mid-century modern furniture. Ventzi’s biggest pride and joy was his family: daughter Stela Coffelt, son-in-law Joseph Coffelt, wife and lifelong professional partner Jenni Guentcheva, who are surviving him. Celebration of Ventzi’s life will take place at the Abbot’s room of the Holly Cross Abbey in Cañon City, Colorado, on Oct. 29, Sunday, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Habitat for Humanity or the American Heart Association.

Glenda Stoldt May 31, 1934 ~ Oct. 13, 2017 Glenda peacefully passed away in the early morning of Oct. 13, 2017 with her children by her side. She was 83 years old. Glenda will joyously join her husband of 66 years, Ernie, in heaven. She was a great wife, mother, and a tremendous caregiver to all those that needed her. Glenda loved crafting, crocheting, and making things for those she loved. She never missed watching Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune shows. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and putting together picture puzzles. And, she really liked watching old movies and old western TV shows like Bonanza and The Virginian. Glenda was born to Glen Richard Hillman and Maxine Young Hillman in Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 31, 1934. Glenda married Ernest John Stoldt on Aug. 5, 1951, and they had five children. As a wife of a career military man, she travelled the country and part of the world with five children in hand. After Ernie retired, he moved his family to Manville, Wyoming where they lived for the next 10 years. For more than 30 years, Glenda and Ernie spent their summers in a cabin high in the Rocky Mountains near White Pine, Colorado. In the winter months, they got great pleasure from their time in the high desert near Carrizozo, New Mexico. Glenda was a proud member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and has now joined the church triumphant. Glenda is survived by son Vince (Barbara), daughters Cheryll (Chip) Graves, Lil (Stan) Graves, Jocelyn (Glenn) Fischer, 11 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernie, her brother Glen Richard Hillman, Jr., her son Glen, and 2 grandsons (Steve and Kevin). A celebration of her 83 years of life will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Cañon City at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16, 2017.

Cost is $15 per person for one Haunted House tour, $25 per person

for both Haunted House tours. VIP passes are available for purchase for $45 and allow you to skip the lines for both attractions. Children in elementary school and younger are required to be accompanied by an adult. Friday and Saturday and Oct. 28, 7 p.m., Aftermath Haunted House is one of the top-rated haunts in Colorado each year. The cost is $15 per person and the proceeds benefit Recreation District programs. The entrance to Aftermath is at the Archery Range, just east of the Recreation District offices, 575 Ash St. Oct. 28, Noon to 3:30 p.m. Spook-tacular Trunk or Treat will be in downtown Cañon City. The costume contest will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. at 715 Main St., followed by trick or treating from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., beginning on the north side of Main and Eighth streets. Head

west on Main to Third, then cross Main and head back east. Trunk or Treat will be on Main Street between Fifth and Seventh streets. The event is sponsored by the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper, Cañon Signature Mortgage, Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, DOC staff and downtown merchants.

Oct. 28, 5 p.m. Deer Mountain Fire will host trick or treating at the station, located at 6181 CR 28. Additionally, the Red Suspenders will have its annual food and fun, at the same time, which will include chili, cornbread, a cake walk and pie judging contest.
