Oct. 13, 1977 ~ Aug. 17, 2017 God took Jamie Danielle Brimmer home to heaven at the young age of 39, in August 2017. She was born in Wheatridge to the parents of Bruce T. Brimmer and Laura M. Brimmer. She was the youngest of 5 children. Her father Bruce passed in 1997. She is survived by her stepfather, Howard (Chuck) Chandler and mother Laura Brimmer, sisters, Rebecca Brimmer McClure Prall, Cynthia Ann Martin Jensen, Julie Denise Martin Bergman, and her only brother, Jason Martin. She is also survived by her 93-yearold grandmother Betty Martin and her 16-year-old daughter Carlye Brianna Brimmer. She loved living in Cañon City with her two cats, Baby and Melody. One of her favorite things to do was walk by the river. She also loved rock and roll. She would watch her step father Howard (Chuck) Chandler practice playing his drums so he would be ready to go on tour with his band, 2 Cañon. We love and miss her and know that she is in a better place, walking in heaven with Jesus. A memorial service will take place at a later date.

May 5, 1931 ~ Oct. 7, 2017 Leona Mary Sophia Owens passed away Oct. 7, 2017, with the loving warmth of her family, at the age of 86. She was born May 5th, 1931 in Wauneta, Nebraska to William Henry Fortkamp and Ada Emma (Petsch) Fortkamp. She grew up in Wauneta with her sisters Donna and Shirley, she enjoyed singing and making music with her sisters and family, she also had a special knack for playing the harmonica. Leona was united in marriage with Marvin Dwight Owens on Aug. 1, 1947, in Trenton, Neb. This union was blessed with two sons, Richard E. and Thomas L. Owens. As a young woman and mother, she worked on the family farm along with Grandma May, taking care of all the animals and children. As time went on, Marvin’s job with the government required several relocations. Leona worked as a licensed beautician in Farmington, New Mexico and Wichita Kansas, always wanting to keep busy and help her family. In 1966, she moved to Cañon City, Colorado and later worked as a supervisor for the laundry and housekeeping departments at Bethesda Care Center. A person never to be idle, Leona and Marvin engaged in greyhound racing, and later lived at and managed a greyhound farm in Penrose, Colorado for several years before retiring. There were many fun times and stories that came from living on the farms, and trips to Las Vegas. Above all, she had a special love for children and cared for many of them throughout her life. Leona was a very kind and selfless person who always treated those around her with much compassion and generosity. She was a fun-loving individual who brought humor and joy to everyone around her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; parents, William and Ada Fortkamp; father and mother-in-law, Sam and May Owens; brotherin-law, James Owens and sister-in-law, Marjorie Koetter. Left to treasure her memories are her sons, Richard (Pat) Owens, Tom (Louise) Owens, of Cañon City; four grandchildren, Shelley (Chris) Snyder, Richard W.(Kristy) Owens, Timothy Owens, Robin (Chad) Bateman; eight great-grandchildren, Kevin (Cassie) Snyder, Aleizja Owens, Nicklas Snyder, Matthew Owens, Dylan Owens, Skyler Owens, Olivia Bateman, Marek Bateman; sisters, Donna Annan, Shirley Yelton; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Bill) Beitler; brothers-in-law, Maynard (Doris) Owens, Don Owens; aunt, Violet; uncle, Martin; cousin, Rolland; numerous cousins and many very special nieces and nephews. Her love and humor will carry on, but she will be greatly missed by all. Funeral service, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017, Wilson Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery.

Jan. 13, 1955 - Oct. 1, 2017 David Joseph “Joe” Kost died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, in Cañon City. Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy E Kost nee Krill, and his children, Patricia E Loyer and her two children Henry and Robert, Joseph M Kost and Christine A Kost. Joe was born in Worland, Wyo., Jan. 13, 1955, to David L Kost and Ardeth D Kost nee Morris, the oldest of five children, Julianna S Rhoades, Daniel P Kost, Kenneth M Kost, and Mary C Sandvold. Joe personified the independence of the American West. Farm life was dear to his heart having spent his formative years in Wyoming working alongside his family. Joe served in the United States Air Force and graduated from the University of Wyoming. Joe was devoted to the betterment of rural communities through his thirty-year career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Development. Joe directed local, regional, and state programs funding community infrastructure, agricultural land and business development, and rural community homeownership. Acknowledged for his experience, he participated in writing national policy for Rural Development in Washington DC. Joe was beloved, well respected, and recognized in his field for his breadth of knowledge in economic development and for his ability to bridge connections and people. Joe was a founding parent, Treasurer and board member for Core Knowledge Charter School. He was an elder and a puppeteer in the puppet ministry with Christian Family Fellowship. Joe was an avid reader, rarely more than an arm’s length away from a book. When he wasn’t reading, Joe was a self-taught hobby man. He learned calligraphy, whittled, forged his own knives and tomahawks, gardened, curated many collections, and raised an assortment of farm animals. Upon retirement, Joe bred alpaca and harvested their fiber, and began a successful boutique coffee roasting company. Whether reading or at work, he was always ready to greet you with a warm smile. The family asks all that knew Joe to join them in celebrating Joe’s gentle and kind spirit Oct. 14, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Abbey Chapel in Cañon City, reception to follow, and at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Basin, WY, on Oct. 28, 2017, reception to follow.

Carol Louise Augustine Jan. 13, 1949 - Oct. 9, 2017 Carol Louise Augustine, 68, passed away at her home in Cañon City, surrounded by her loving family on Oct. 9, 2017. She was born Jan. 13, 1949, in Chicago, and it was there that she met Al Augustine, a Chicago policeman and the love of her life, whom she married on her birthday in 1974. Carol owned her own beauty salon in Chicago and enjoyed taking care of her clients that soon became friends. After her husband’s retirement, they made their way to Cañon City, where she continued in hair care, working at Hair It Is. Never one to sit still, Carol kept busy lending her talents to Crafting for Christ at Shephard of the Hills Lutheran Church, volunteering as a member of American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 13, having fun playing BINGO at the VFW or testing the waters in Cripple Creek. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Albert, daughter, Christine Vitel; son, Anthony Vitel; daughter, Marlena Vital; son, Albert (Joanne) Augustine; siblings, Maurice (Connie) Tongate, Rick Tongate and grandchildren, Emilio, Nicolas, Gabrielle, Michella and Camden. Services will be held at a future date.

James Vettese May 16, 1925 ~ Oct. 8, 2017 James Vettese, 92, of Cañon City passed away Oct. 8, 2017, in Cañon City. James was born May 16, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., to Francis (Capaldi) Vettese and Pasquale Vettese. James was united in marriage to Julia (Senko) Vettese in Detroit, Mich., on June 19, 1948, until her death Nov. 28, 2011. James and Julia were avid golfers and enjoyed ballroom dancing. James was also an amateur radio operator (KC8HM) while they lived in Michigan. James is survived by his daughter, Janet Schulte; three sons, Dennis Vettese, Mark Vettese and Thomas

Vettese. He is also survived by eight grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Angeline Bernardi, Theresa Rotondi; brothers, John Vettese and Anthony Vettese. Jane Ellen Murphy June 10, 1945 ~ Oct. 7, 2017 Jane Murphy, 72, of Cañon City, went to be with her Savior on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Huck and Madeline and brothers, Eddie and Wayne. The Boys & Girls Club of Fremont County will host its

sixth annual “Bowl for Great Futures” fundraising event Nov. 4 at Cañon City Lanes, located at 2970 E. Main St. The event is a fun, recreational event for all ages and skill levels, and a great opportunity to fundraise for our Clubs. The tournament will feature two sessions of bowling (12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) for fourperson teams that can include friends, co-workers or family members! If you are a great bowler you can compete for the cash prizes, or you can focus on trying to win a team fundraising challenge. Plus, all bowlers will be eligible to win one of the many great door prizes. The tournament will be a Scratch Team—Nine Pin No Tap event. In this format, a strike is awarded to a bowler upon knocking over 9 or 10 pins on their first roll, making it fun for all types of bowlers. Teams can be made up of any combination of males and females, adults and youth. Team entry fee is $100 ($25 per bowler) which includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, a slice of pizza and a soft drink for each bowler. Teams can either pay the entry fee or they can raise the money for their entry fee by gathering donations and pledges. The team that raises the most money (above the $100 entry fee) in the fundraising challenge will be treated to a refreshment party. Cash prizes that will be awarded to the teams that win the competitive bowling challenge include $250 for 1st place, $150 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place. Again this year are cash prizes for top individual bowlers including $75 for top female bowler, $75 for top male bowler, and a bowling party for six for the top youth bowler (18 years old or under). Door prizes will also be awarded throughout the day. Candidates line up for 2018 sheriff’s race By Sarah Matott

In an already large pool, the race for the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office in the 2018 election continues to grow. On Thursday, Clint Robertson publicly announced his bid for candidacy. According to the Colorado Secretary of State’s website, seven people already have filed their paperwork, signifying their intent to run for sheriff, including Robertson, current FCSO Undersheriff Ty Martin, Florence Police Chief Mike DeLaurentis, FCSO Deputy Clint Wilson, FCSO Deputy Cyrus Young and Fremont County residents Skip Moreau and James Boyd Canterbury. Robertson, who retired from the Cañon City Police Department earlier this year, said the main reason why he decided to run for sheriff is that he wants to help the community that is his home. “I love this community. I can tell you that I have lived longer in Fremont County than anywhere else in my life. This is my home; it may not be where I was born, but it is my home,” he said. Robertson has been married to his wife, Michelle, for 27 years, has two sons and is just a few months shy of being in law enforcement for 20 years. Prior to going into law enforcement, Robertson said he served in the U.S. Air Force for almost three years. He moved to the Air Force reserves in 1991 after his base closed. He said he began his career in law Clint Robertson enforcement in 1997 with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. “I started out as a detention deputy with the sheriff’s office, and my goal was to go off to the street,” he said, adding he made it to patrol that same year with current FCSO Sheriff Jim Beicker being the officer who trained him for his first day in the field. Robertson worked in various roles throughout his career. He said he moved up to become a patrol sergeant. He also worked investigations, traffic and later, in the administrative side after moving over to the CCPD. Robertson said he feels like everything he has done throughout his life and career in law enforcement has led him to this point and has given him the experience needed to be a successful sheriff. One of the biggest parts of Robertson’s campaign is in regards to the community, which is why his campaign slogan is “Community First.” “It’s more of a commitment than a slogan,” he said, adding that he believes the FCSO would be a much better organization if it becomes part of the community again. “We have got to do the right thing by the community,” Robertson said. He listed some of the things that would make the FCSO move into that direction. “Number one is going to be accountability. We need to be accountable to the public that we serve,” he said, adding that the people of Fremont County will want to know and should know the status of the sheriff’s office. Robertson said with accountability comes transparency, which requires also the FCSO getting involved with the community. He said all of these ideas tie in with one another and all of them together will increase the community’s trust with the FCSO. He also said communication is important, not just regarding the public, but also internally. “With communication, I mean we need it from the deputies up to the chain of command without fear of any reprisals,” he said. He said if officers within the department can communicate with one another, then they can do better with the public, which in turn makes the entire department stronger. Robertson also said as sheriff, he would address training, as training increases safety and reduces liability. He also said, regarding officers, that the FCSO needs to begin recruiting individuals who are from the community so there’s a higher chance of them staying here. Robertson said the CCPD has proven that it is possible to recruit locally because it was something he helped do while at CCPD. Having worked in law enforcement for 10 years in Fremont County, Clint Wilson considers himself to be the top preference for Fremont County Sheriff. Wilson is one of seven candidates who has filed paperwork to run in the 2018 Fremont County Sheriff’s Election. According to the Colorado Secretary of State’s website, these people include Wilson, current FCSO Undersheriff Ty Martin, Florence Police Chief Mike DeLaurentis, FCSO Deputy Cyrus Young, former officer Clint Robertson, and Fremont County residents Skip Moreau and James Boyd Canterbury. Wilson, who currently works for the FCSO as the school resource officer in Cotopaxi, has been with the FCSO since 2007. Prior to working in law enforcement, Wilson served in the Navy for seven years -- fighting in operation Desert Storm. Wilson said he always will support current Sheriff Jim Beicker, but he also believes it’s time for a change. “Something has to change, and whether it’s the training or setting up how things are done ... something’s got to be done,” Wilson said. Wilson, who has worked for the FCSO mostly, also has worked for the Cañon City Police Department. He said he believes he has the necessary law enforcement experience, as well as the training and education to lead the FCSO. Clint Wilson Wilson said he believes the people in Fremont County deserve transparency, honesty, integrity and respect, which is why he has decided to run in the 2018 election. “I think over the last few years all of that has kind of been put to the wayside, and because of that, we’ve had a lot of things happen, which have allowed the public to perceive the office as having some issues,” Wilson said, adding that people haven’t been given the entire picture because of a lack of transparency. Wilson said, as sheriff, he would make it so the FCSO is working closely with not just the media but with all members of the community so that people have the full story of what has occurred. He said he would like to make it so the sheriff is available for anyone who wishes to discuss issues with him or anyone who needs questions answered. “It’s kind of like going back to the Old West when you used to be able to do things with a handshake and that’s how life was done,” Wilson said. He said people have lost how to communicate face to face these days because of cell phones and social media, so he wants to be that person who will return a phone call and meet people face to face. “With that, it gives the public the opportunity to come in and visit with you oneon-one and not only become part of the situation but also become a part of the fix,” he said. Addressing the FCSO, Wilson said several of the individuals at the sheriff’s office placed on leave all made choices, which were made, because they are human. “It happens. It’s a part of the process,” he said. Moving forward, Wilson said communicating with employees on all levels and providing additional training would allow the FCSO to grow. He also said as sheriff, he will ensure all policies are being followed within the department and ensure that all employees meet guidelines set forth by professional conduct and ethics standards. Wilson said people placed in supervisory roles also need to be held more accountable and that the FCSO needs to be brought up to speed with surrounding agencies, such as improving the department’s technology. Wilson also addressed recruiting individuals to work for the FCSO. “When it comes to recruiting, obviously, we want to recruit local people if we can,” Wilson said. He, however, said he thinks if the FCSO became more active in recruiting from local law enforcement academies and was more upfront about what they pay and benefits at the FCSO, then they would be able to get more people into the area. “If we can show them what the benefits to working here area, then I think we would be able to attract more people,” he said.
