Richard Leon Cunningham

Richard L. Cunningham, 80, of Canon City, went to be with his Lord and Savior September 28, 2017. He was born November 21, 1936 in Canon City. Richard served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He was an active member and elder at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Canon City. He enjoyed bowling and fishing and he loved his family dearly. He is survived by the love of his life, Doris, to whom he proposed after only two dates and married within one year, on October 1, 1961. He is also survived by his two children, Michelle (Scott) Kieffer, Brian (Laurie) Cunningham; grandchildren, Lindsey Moore, Dan, Nick, Beau and Cole Cunningham; older brother, Bud Cunningham; younger sister, Shirley Brownlee; nieces and nephews; stepmother, Mary Enyeart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and Russell Cunningham and older brother, Jack Cunningham. Memorial service, 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 3, 2017, St. John Lutheran Church, 790 Greydene Ave., in Canon City. James Michael Kingery

James Michael Kingery was born on October 20, 1950, in Albany, Oregon, to Max and Mary Kingery and passed away on August 31, 2017. He graduated from Corvallis High School in 1968 and earned a degree in architecture from the University of Idaho. This degree enabled him to pursue his passion of building homes through his business, MK Construction. He took great pride in creating the plans and building his clients’ dream homes. These clients usually became lifelong friends. Mike enjoyed photography, hunting, golfing (especially the New Mexico trips), and traveling. His appreciation of architecture and history motivated him to plan extensively for several trips to Europe. Mike’s friends and family remember him for being straightforward and honest and for his patriotism and love of his country. Mike married Mary Ann Epperson in 2001 and inherited a family which he treasured, including stepsons Jim (Marcy) Epperson, Kurt (Linda) Epperson, and grandchildren Shelby (Tracey Tucker) Epperson, Katie Sanders (Greg Marrs), Jordan Epperson, Luke Epperson and great-grandson Merrick Tucker. In addition to these family members, he is also survived by his sister Patty, brothers Gary and Steve; sistersin-law Karen Mendendall, Kathy (Wayne) Shotts, Linda Kimball; brothers-in-law Bill (Barb) Kimball, and Wayne (Cathy) Kimball. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Jim Kimball. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at the Canon Royal Event Center, 523 Main Street in Canon City on Saturday, October 7, from 3:30 to 5:30 with Chuck Kinyon leading a time of sharing memories from 4:15 to 4:45. Colene entered peacefully into the arms of the Lord on September 30th 2017. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa and is preceded in death by her loving parents Burt and Lillian, husband James, a sister Gloria Major, and Mr. Ron Byerly, friend and companion. Colene is survived by her daughter Joyce Brooks, son Todd J (wife) Laura, 4 grandchildren, Chad Brooks, Chris Brooks (wife) Audrey ,Zachary L Schmoyer (wife)Amber, JoBeth (husband), Armando Sosa, along with 13 great grandchildren, 3 nieces and 3 nephews. Colene had an adventurous spirit. She loved the ocean with its lighthouses and the majestic mountains of Colorado. Although she traveled whenever possible including across country several times, one of her favorite places to spend time was right here at home at the La Jara reservoir in the San Luis Valley. She was a spark plug, banging on all 8 cylinders which is why she was always known to her friends as “Sparky”. The grass never grew long under her feet for long. A devoted mother and “Oma” to her family and a helping hand to any stranger is how she will always be remembered. Colene and family would like to give a special thanks to her care givers over these past years that helped her to remain in her home which was very important her. Florence Historical Archive to host book signing and pre-holiday open house Fremont County’s historic coal towns will come alive at the Florence Historical Archive’s book signing and pre-holiday open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 11. The Coal Towns, the latest in a series of historic guides to the County published by the Fremont County Historical Society, will be the focus of the book signing. Five members of the Fremont County Heritage Commission, who compiled the Guide will be on hand to sign books and share additional coal town history. Displays focused on local coal camps will also provide the chance to read original descriptions published in the area’s earliest newspapers, the Exparte, the Paradox and the Daily Citizen. The Coal Towns was published during 2017’s Annual Fremont County Heritage Festival, just after the release of the Fremont County Historical Society’s 2018 Calendar, which this year features vintage photographs of County schools. The 2018 calendars are available for sale at the Archive, as are all the Historical Society’s Guides. The calendar and guides make great gifts year around. The Archive’s 2017 Christmas Cards, featuring frontier transportation, will be available to purchase or order at the book signing and open house. Several area authors will also be present to sign their books on local history. Proceeds benefit the Fremont County Historical Society or the Florence Historical Archive. Florence Historical Archive and Research Center is free to all, and is located at 600 W. 3rd St., Suite H, in the Florence Municipal Building. Come in on Oct. 11 to enjoy coal town history with refreshments, and do some holiday shopping. Dollar General officially opens Penrose location By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record PENROSE — Dollar General’s newest store at 895 Marilyn Drive in Penrose is now open for business. The store quietly opened Sept. 22, and store manager Sean Langreder has received a lot of positive comments from customers. “Everybody loves it so far,” he said. “They’re happy they have something closer so they don’t have to go so far (to shop).” In its new location, Dollar General will offer area residents a convenient new place to shop for everyday essentials at low prices. Dollar General will celebrate the store’s official grand opening beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday with $10 Dollar General gift cards for the first 50 adult shoppers and a Dollar General tote bag with complimentary product samples, among other giveaways, to the first 200 shoppers. “Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of

Cotopaxi School, Mountain View Core Knowledge send supplies to school impacted by Hurricane Harvey By Sara Knuth The Daily Record COTOPAXI — Before sending 37 tubs filled with school supplies away to Texas, teachers at Cotopaxi School asked their students to imagine what it would be like to lose all of their possessions. That was the reality for 20 percent of the students at Cunningham Middle School in Houston after Hurricane Harvey battered the city in late August and early September. But when they headed to school, the Texas students were greeted with donations from Cotopaxi School and Mountain View Core Knowledge School, both nearly 1,000 miles away. “We talked about it with our students here, and said, ‘Imagine if all your toys and all your clothes and everything that you have is gone,’” said Cotopaxi School special education paraprofessional Reta Martinez. “We decided we would do a kids helping kids (donation).” Martinez, who started the effort with two of her grandchildren, said the families of Cotopaxi School donated school supplies, books and toys. Mountain View families gathered baby food, diapers and formula to donate. One Cotopaxi parent filled two

Tallahassee Fire wraps up busy fire season

With the recent rains, it’s easy to forget how hot and dry it was this summer. That made for a busy firefighting season for the volunteers of the Fremont County Tallahassee Fire Protection District. The summer got off to a fast start with 11 calls right after July 4. Some were lightning fires and one was started by a construction crew. Two of the lightning fires were dangerously close to structures. The Allen Road fire on July 7 was within 150 feet of a residence. Shortly after this flurry of calls, the TFPD responded with BLM to the Table Mountain Fire, then deployed equipment and firefighters to Utah. The fire on County Road 2 on July 8 required a nine-person TFPD crew to climb a mountain top to 8300 feet which was only accessible by hiking and carrying water and equipment to the top. The crew successfully stopped the flames with a fire line just minutes before the winds came up, which would have caused a major event. One residence was within 500 yards of the fire. The crew spent five hours on the fire and got off the mountain just before dark. TFPD firefighters contained the County Road 2 fire in July. The volunteers had to haul water and equipment up an 8300-foot mountain to create a fire line. The TFPD responded to 21 wildfires, 19 car and motorcycle accidents and 15 medical calls from people who reside within the 325-square mile district and from tourists. Winding through the district are Colorado Scenic Byways that draw visitors from all over the world. These

visitors can be assured that if help is needed, the TFPD volunteers are ready to respond. The TFPD is also in demand to help with wildfires throughout the western US. Income from these deployments is necessary to help offset expenses. Fourperson crews and fire trucks responded to calls for help in Montana, Wyoming and Utah. When deployed to these remote fires, the TFPD crews work 14 days at the site before getting time off to rest. “Every fire presents a different challenge. The work schedule and conditions are grueling and dangerous, but we are firefighters – that’s what we do,” said firefighter Greg Cook. Mike Meyrick, firefighter and EMT, pointed out that “what most people don’t think about when they call 911 is that our volunteers respond no matter what they are doing in their personal lives or if they are at work. If an accident occurs in the middle of the night, during dinner or a family activity, we drop what we’re doing to respond.” The TFPD works hard to provide outstanding services to its residents. “Financial concerns are always an issue. We struggle to get the most out of donations, grants and deployments,” Meyrick said, “and we’ve accomplished a lot with a small budget, but there is more to do.” The TFPD has a mill levy request on the Nov. 7 ballot that would provide income. Top priorities for the district are starting improvements to the Canyon Springs Station near Tallahassee Road and recruiting new volunteers. A recent upgrade to its communications system is Active 911, which provides real-time updates as first responders travel to calls.

“We took fliers around a couple of different blocks in their neighborhood, and then we took their wagon, and we started going house to house,” she said, adding that they lived in Pueblo West. “We got to the third house, and the wagon was full.” At the end of it, she said, “we ended up with two-and-a-half pick-up loads, just from their neighborhood.” This time around, Martinez said she wanted to show her younger grandchildren, eighth-grader Bella Martinez and sixth-grader Cash Martinez, what it was like to help other people. So, she contacted their school, Mountain View, and started collecting donations at her own school to start gathering supplies. When they found out a school in Oklahoma was planning a donation, Martinez and her family loaded a covered trailer and van with the supplies and headed to Heartland Middle School. From there, the Oklahoma school officials took supplies to Texas, where they helped two teachers rebuild their homes. “I think it’s so important for kids to learn to help others,” Martinez said. “I think the life lessons we teach in school are every bit as important as the academic lessons we teach them.”

McKinley Elementary School community gets new playground Playgound the result of Colorado Health Foundation grant By Sara Knuth The Daily Record When the students of McKinley Elementary School imagined their ideal playground early this year, the TV show “American Ninja Warrior” came to mind. That vision became a reality this year when the school swapped a tall slide and limited equipment for two separate obstacle course that mimic the show, which features actionpacked challenges for athletes. The school hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday with students and district officials to officially open the new playground. “You’ll notice that both courses have an element of American Ninja Warrior-type course,” McKinley principal Scott Morton said. “It helps include more play and gets them more active.” The playground, which is separated into areas for older and younger

The playground was designed with student input. The equipment is a result of a Colorado Health Foundation grant. Cañon Exploratory School received a similar grant early last year that resulted in a new playground there, too. Neither playground used money from the Cañon City School District general fund to complete

the project. While the equipment was installed, Morton said, students played in the grass during recess. “The staff has been really patient, the kids have been great, waiting in excitement as they see it get closer and closer,” Morton said, adding that the school hosted a special recess once the playground was completed. “The kids had a blast.”

JOB PURPOSE:

Provides insurance and financing services to automotive customers by verifying sales information; determining need for financing; evaluating customer credit worthiness; preparing financing and legal documents; selling products and services; maintaining rapport with customers.

Duties:

• Determines desire/need for automobile financing by interviewing customer; exploring payment options. Verifies automobile purchase information by reviewing sales contract data; conferring with sales department; making adjustments as needed. • Determines customer credit worthiness by studying customer credit application; obtaining credit reports; analyzing information; comparing customer evaluation to organization standards; searching for lenders in information system; forwarding applications to lenders; conferring with loan underwriters and loan processors; obtaining stipulations when required; approves or rejects loan. • Prepares transaction documents by completeing loan agreements, Department of Motor Vehicle registrations and related documents. • Confirms automobile sales contract information by disclosing data, provisions, finance charges, and interest rates to customer; ensuring understanding of content.
