Isabel Medina Isabel passed away peacefully Dec. 28, 2017. Our mother, grandmother, sister and aunt touched all of our hearts in many different ways. Carlos L. Neuben Jan. 4, 1930 ~ Dec. 29, 2017

Carlos L. Neuben, 87, died peacefully at home in Cañon City, Colorado, on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017. He was born on January 4, 1930 in Hambleton, West Virginia to Harry Carlton and Vida (Collett) Neuben. He married Bev Henningson on August 30, 1980, in the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch in Cañon City, Colorado. Carlos served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for 2 years, and was drafted into the Marine Corps for another two years in 1951. As an aircraft mechanic, he was a member of the last squadron that flew F-4U fighters. Following boot camp in South Carolina, he sailed on the Midway and was stationed onboard for seven months. He also was assigned to the Bennington aircraft carrier and land based in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he was land based for 3 months. Following his discharge, he was a fireman for 13 years in New Port News, Virginia, after which time he purchased his own truck and drove truck over the road. He moved to Penrose, Colorado, in the early 1970s where he continued “trucking.” In 1993, he retired from the Teamsters Union. After retiring, Carlos and Bev spent 11 winters in their motor home in Arizona, where they met many neat people. In 2009 they went on a 34-day RV Caravan to Alaska, which was a dream of his - such great memories Carlos was a lifetime member of the NRA; also actively involved in the HAM radio club. He was honored to serve in the United States Military and loved his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one daughter. He is survived his wife, Bev; one son, Kenneth, in North Carolina; a half- brother, Carlton, in Massachusetts; and a step sister, Jodie Vaughn, in Texas, as well as very special friends, Ken and Barb Smith. He was a kind man with a quiet strength and pondering mind, which often over shadowed his whimsical mischievous nature, unless you just happened to catch the twinkle in his eyes. He is and will be missed so much by Bev and his friends. We know he is now at peace, free from pain, and with his Lord and Savior. Memorial Service Officiated by Pastor Feuerstein at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, First United Methodist Church, Cañon City. Students pen CCHS grant application By Sara Knuth The Daily Record When officials with the Colorado Department of Education go over a Cañon City High School grant application, they will find words written from a different perspective than most. From the cover page to the words themselves, the application was completed entirely by students in Madison Tortessi’s research/ technical reading and writing class. “It was intimidating and Ms. Tortessi thought the important part was to make it something more worth reading,” said Rita Carroll, a student in the class. “That’s not something you see a lot in technical writing — an interesting grant that’s not hard to understand.” The grant, which is for the state’s Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools program, would give the school a chance to partner with the Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus and Fremont Economic Development’s TechSTART to create a six-year program for students to work in internships and eventually, earn an associate degree. Starting during their freshman year, students would work within the program to get experience and

education in a science, technology, engineering or math industry. Upon graduation from high school, the students would start working on their associate degree at PCC free of charge. “The P-TECH grant is pretty much offering kids, through the STEM program, to get two free years of college to get their associate degree,” said Lisa Downs, a student. The class, which is made up of juniors and seniors, won’t benefit from the grant if CCHS gets it. But for many of them, creating it was worth the effort. “I think it’s a great opportunity because if this had been in effect when I started high school, I would have definitely done it because it’s part of what I want to do,” student Trent Durnen said. Downs added: “College is getting more expensive, so two free years of college could get me two free years out of six that I need to take.” Student Levi Green, who designed the application’s cover page in Photoshop, said he wanted officials to know the application was completed by students. On a background that looks like notebook paper, Green listed the names of the students who worked on the project.

Marines help local children have a merry Christmas By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Retired, active duty and inactive duty marines focused their attention on one single mission in November and December: collecting toys for kids in need through Toys for Tots. The Marine Corps League Royal Gorge Detachment once again snapped to attention and worked long days and cold evenings manning the toy donation boxes at Walmart and other locations where people purchased and dropped off thousands of toys and other gift items for children newborn through teens. This year, more than 1,100 local children were served through the Marines’ Toys for Tots program. “We had a lot more family requests than we have had in

the past,” said organizer Carl Clink. “It was a bit of a shock that by the end of November to be where we were at the end of December last year. At one point, we were really kind of worried that we wouldn’t have enough toys.” Clink said individuals contributed anywhere from a penny to a $100 in ammo boxes placed across town to help buy toys. “One story that really got me was a developmentally disabled kid who ran up, reached into his pocket, pulled out a penny and gave it to me,” he said. “He was just over the moon that he was contributing. Out of all the people who put money in, that is the one that I remember most.” In the past, another young boy gave all his Christmas money to Toys for Tots.

“That’s another one of those things that always stands out,” Clink said. He said some of the parents who had signed up for Toys for Tots did not pick up the toys they had requested, which caused him concern on Christmas Eve. “It discouraged me, I wondered if these kids would have a Christmas,” he said. “It upset me. We tried everything we could do to reach these people.” Those toys will be stored and given out in December when the next campaign begins. “We will find homes for those toys,” he said. While it was the marines who spearheaded the mission, Clink said the success of the program would not have been possible without community support and partnerships.

After more than 45 years, Hilltop Market to close grocery store By Sara Knuth The Daily Record After the blizzard of 1984 knocked out power throughout town, the Dunn family still had to go to work. “Being a grocery store, you’ve got to be open,” said Suzi Dieter, one of the owners of Hilltop Market. “So, my brother and I had to go out to the meat tubs and get snow out of the parking lot to put in, you know, along the milk and eggs, and put a little here and there around the produce and the packaged meat.” Her mother, Carol Dunn, added: “We were 18 hours without power. And we ran the store with flashlights and a calculator.” On that day and more for the past 45 years, Hilltop has been a staple of Fremont County. But Tuesday, the store will begin a process to close down with plans to reopen later this year as a custom meat processing facility. “We have decided that it’s time to adapt or die, make some changes. And they’re positive changes,” said Carol Dunn, who owns the store with her husband Ray Dunn, daughter Suzi Dieter and son-in-law Brian Dieter. “We are closing the grocery store beginning on Jan. 2 with a liquidation sale.” Hilltop, located at 1409 Ninth St., has been operated by the Dunn family since 1972. They purchased the business from the Becco and Moneghini families, who started Hilltop in 1946 as a fruit stand on the side of the road. In that time, the market has evolved to become a market on the Ninth Street hilltop that sells groceries, including meat, a family specialty. “We’ve been doing our thing ever since — the best meat market in town,” Carol Dunn said. “That’s been our best thing all these years, our meat market. And it still is.” But because of demographic changes, Dunn said, the owners had to reconsider the business this year. “More people are eating out, more people are not cooking at home, or they’re smaller families, you know, they’re not cooking meals like they used to. The children are getting breakfast and lunch at school,” Dunn said. “So, the demographic changes that we’ve seen in the last couple of years have made the grocery side of the business not profitable like it should be.” With the closure of the grocery business, she also said the family plans to spend more time together and within community organizations. “For our family, we can’t keep doing this and justify taking so much time from our family and not seeing any profit come back from it,” Dunn said. As part of the store’s transition, the owners plan to open Hilltop Custom Processing, which will prepare wild game brought in by hunters and USDAinspected beef and pork, including those grown by 4-H families. The new business will be operated by Suzi and Brian Deter, who intend to

From left, owners Ray and Carol Dunn and Suzi and Brian Dieter are pictured Friday in front of the store. open the store late this summer. “They know that hunters want their meat processed correctly, in clean sanitary conditions, and also that they want it processed individually so they get the meat they killed,” Dunn said. “The same is true for people who grow their own animals, beef or hogs. They give them good feed and everything, and they want that meat back and animals processed individually.” But while the business is changing, Suzi Dieter said customers can expect some things to stay the same. For one, the new business will be capable of serving Hilltop’s traditional sausage recipe for wild game, as well as pepperoni and teriyaki sticks, ground meat and other cuts. “As a whole, as the Hilltop Market family, we do have an excellent reputation for quality, for customer service,” she said. “We feel that we can fill that need the same way that we have for 45 years.” For the family, making the decision to transition the business was a tough one. Dunn said that both of her children, Suzi Dieter and James Dunn, grew up in the store. “When we took this business over 45 years ago, I found out I was pregnant,” Carol Dunn said. “She (Suzi) was born in August, the same year we took the business over in 1972.” Suzi Deter added: “I’ve been here since I was 4 days old. And my two boys have grown up in this store, too.” Easton and Cameron Dieter, her sons,

The store, she said, is the result of his dream to own it. “Without this man and his dream, none of this would be here,” she said. The family thanked their customers, as well as their employees. Several of their workers have been at the store for many years, including Lois Dixon who has been there for 23 years, Pat Meigs who has been there for 11, Shelly Stacy

who has been there for 10 and Dorothy Goff who has been there for six. Many customers have been going to the store for decades, passing the shopping tradition along to their children and grandchildren. “It has been a hard decision because we enjoy our customers,” Carol Dunn said. “They’re just the greatest people. They’re customers who have become our friends.” And while those longtime customers might be looking for a new place to shop, Carol Dunn said she’ll be doing the same. “I don’t know where I’m going to shop,” she said. “I haven’t shopped anywhere else in 50 years.”

Central Colorado Housing is offering a new round of their “Manage Your Money” workshops, beginning Jan. 18. The eight-week series will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at UAACOG. The cost of the workshops is $40 per household and scholarships are available. Scholarship applications can be picked up at the CCH (UAACOG) office at 3224-A Independence Road. Andrew Smith, a Bureau of Land Management paleontologist, is currently prepping a fossil at the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center. The fossil was recently found in the Garden Park Fossil Area outside of Cañon City. Visitors are welcome to stop by Friday and Saturday at the museum during open hours to see the work that goes into prepping a fossil. The museum is free and open to the public. The museum and history center is located at 612 Royal Gorge Boulevard.
