LeRoy Dale Davis LeRoy D. Davis born Feb. 14, 1949 died peacefully Jan. 16, 2018 in his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Preceding him in death are his parents; Larry & Helen Davis and a nephew; Troy Tilley. He leaves behind a sister; Peggy Harden and 6 brothers; Danny (Debby), Tommy (Carolyn), Terry (Virginia), Billy (Mary), Kenny (Dottie) and Jimmy (Linda). LeRoy was Salutatorian of his graduating class, served his country in the United States Army through the R.O.T.C. program, was a Graduate of Pueblo Community College, was an author of several short stories; loved to read and enjoyed playing cards. He will be truly missed by family and friends. The family would like to thank Sangre De Cristo Hospice Care for their professional and compassionate care for LeRoy during the past several months. Robin Anne (Vinburg) Slason Robin Anne (Vinburg) Slawson went home to the Lord after she passed away from breast cancer on January 17, 2018 with her family by her side. She was born December 27, 1964 in Steubenville, Ohio to Robert and Joyce (Matask) Vinburg. On November 4, 2000, Robin was united in marriage to

Patrick Slawson. She worked for 10 years at Sunflower Insurance Group as a benefits advisor and health insurance agent. She later became an entrepreneur and started Canon Health Insurance Associates. Robin also worked for her in-laws at Coyote’s Coffee Den in Penrose for many years. Robin enjoyed her family, friends, and a good glass of cabernet (or three). She was a fantastic baker, and always made cookies and other goodies for the children of Penrose Elementary. Robin was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Robin is survived by her loving husband, Patrick; their son, Alex; parents, Robert and Joyce Vinburg; sisters, Heather (Bob) Deller, Bonnie (Steve) Sferrella; brother, Robert Jr. (Nicole) Vinburg; sister, Priscilla Joyce (Frank) Redmond; mother and fatherin-law, Pete and Rhea Mugasis; father and motherin-law, William and Linda Slawson; brother-in-law, Christian Slawson; sister-in-law, Kelly Slawson; best friend, Lyn (Jim) Hook; numerous extended family members and many friends. Hazel Irene McInroe

William E. Miller, 68, of Canon City, CO, died in his home on December 24, 2017, from complications of pancreatic cancer. William was born June 3, 1949, in Canon City, CO, a son to John and Ruth Miller. He had the unique experience of being born in the same home that his mother and father lived in until their death. William worked for the city of Canon for over 40 years. He played music beautifully, by ear, never having had lessons. He shared this gift with many over the years. He had a great sense of humor and was always up for shenanigans. He drove the church van for years, transporting the youth to events. He was kind and looked out for those who could not look out for themselves. He was a loyal son, who cared for his parents in their later years and always had time for a friend who may be suffering and needed a joke or a hug. He was a loving Dad to Dennis, always in his corner with a willing ear and open heart. He was a wonderful father in law to Polly, always helping her cook and clean up and sharing his Mom’s recipes while they chatted over coffee. He thought his grandkids were wonderful and he doted on them, teasing them and playing with them and really enjoying his time with them. He is survived by his son, Dennis (Polly) Salzmann, of Firestone, CO, and four grandchildren, who were his joy and his sister, Jean Alarcon, of Fort Collins, CO. Bill hated the thought of people grieving over him. He loved tradition but did not want a funeral or any kind of service. He wanted people to remember him as he was and reminisce fondly, not cry and mourn. So, smile when you think of him and share one of his corny jokes, or give a hug to someone in need, or when you hear a song, remember his love of music and know that he’s hearing the best music now as he spends eternity with his family and the Lord that he loved.

Hazel Irene McInroe, 88, passed away on January 20, 2018. She was born on June 23, 1929 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Claude and Hazel Berkeley. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado before she was one years old. They moved to San Diego, California when she was twelve. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1947. She lived in San Diego until 1977. She married in 1947, she had a daughter and a son from her first marriage. In 1964, she married Darwin Earl “Slim” McInroe, they were happily married for 31 years. She worked in retail at a variety of stores, and enjoyed being a housewife. She and Slim loved to square dance. Hazel became a Hospice volunteer after his death, helping others for twenty-one years. She helped organize the Sunshine Girls, a monthly luncheon for women whose husbands had passed away while a patient with hospice. She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship in Canon City from its inception. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, half-brother Robert Berkeley. She is survived by her sister, Thelma Faircloth; children, Linda Garrett of Penrose and Ronald Faircloth of California; step-son, Douglas McInroe of Arizona and step-daughter, Modina (John) McInroe Mangini of Houston, TX. She was blessed with six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Joyce Elaine Adams Joyce Elaine Adams, 60, of Rockvale, passed away January 18, 2018. She was born in Kansas on February 20, 1957 to Herbert and Ethel (Ellis) Bellomy. Joyce attended elementary school in Bristol and later graduated from Granada High School. On March 3, 1979, Joyce married Dickie Adams. She worked for many years as an associate at Wal-Mart and also had her own, holistic medicine and healing arts business. More than anything, Joyce loved her family and always enjoyed the time she spent with them. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Briefly Cup and Cone hosts local Chess Club Cañon City’s own local Chess Club invites chess players of all levels and ages to come play or watch a game with them at 2 p.m. Thursdays at the Cup and Cone Ice Cream Shop, located on the corner of Fourth Street and Royal Gorge Boulevard. “Most of our current members bring their own chess sets, so there are usually enough boards to accommodate visitors,” said club member Rob Rountree. “No formal membership is required.” The club recently donated several DVDs and books about chess and how to play the game to the Little Free Library at the Cup and Cone. “These are very excellent video lessons about the strategy, tactics and history of chess,” said Rountree. The Chess Club started about 14 years ago in Westcliffe but has been meeting at the Cup and Cone for the past five years. The shop is hospitable to lots of different groups. “We’ve had anything from writers to bikers, mentors and their men-tees,” said Cup and Cone owner Jeri Fry. “Occasionally there are musicians, theatre readings, book signings and candidate meet and greets here, too.” The Cup and Cone is an ice cream and coffee shop offering hand dipped Blue Bell ice cream and Boulder Organic ice cream, and fresh brewed Espresso and Numi Teas. CCHS students present case for longer lunchtime

Cañon City High School students Rochella Lamborn, Alyssa Lopez, William Baumchen and Brandon Elbert feel changes are needed within the local school district to give elementary and middle school students more time to eat. The students outlined their plan in a public policy presentation, “Hungry for More,” during Monday’s Cañon City School Board Meeting at the District Administration Building. The public policy presentation stems from Chris Newton’s American government class. Lamborn said the most plate waste happens at the elementary and middle school levels. While their entire lunchtime is typically 20 minutes from the time they enter the cafeteria to the time they exit, she said students get about 15 minutes of seated time to eat. The district’s average seat time is 13 minutes, with some students getting a minimum of only eight minutes. “For a young person, this is not enough time,” she said. “They are slow eaters, plus they like to have time to socialize at lunch.” The students proposed the district implement a required 30-minute time frame for students to eat within the district’s Wellness Policy, including transitions from recess to class. This would be accomplished by adding extra time to the end of the school day. Lopez said that because of the high number of students who rely on free and reduced lunch as a decent meal, the issue is of great importance. The students’ research found that children with less than 20 minutes of time to eat consumed 13 percent less of their entree, 12 percent fewer vegetables, 10 percent less milk and 23 percent fewer fruits. Baumchen said the USDA and the Center for Disease Control agree that nutritional status is linked to conduct inside and outside the classroom, as well as academic performance and scholastic participation. Board president Larry Oddo thanked the students for the proposal and said a presentation offered by students from Newton’s class last year is being looked at closely. In May 2017, three students proposed a later school start time as part of their public policy project, which also was presented to the school board. Those students found that finding time to get a full night of sleep is exhausting, and sleep deprivation can lead to consequences, including poor grades, drowsy driving, depression and thoughts and attempts of suicide. Colette named 2017 CattleWoman of the year By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record When she was a young woman, Gerri Colette’s father sold herds of cattle each year to pay for her college tuition. It’s been her mission since she retired as an elementary school in 2000 to educate children on the many benefits that cattle offer to humans, not only as beef but also for medical purposes and things people use every day. Colette, 78, was recognized for her ongoing work when she was named the 2017 CattleWoman of the Year by the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association during its mid-winter conference Jan. 15-17 in Denver. Colette retired in 2000 after 37 years as a teaching, and she has been part of the Fremont County CattleWomen since 1990. The official nomination letter sent by the Fremont County CattleWomen for the state award says Colette has been an integral part of the group’s projects and fundraising for scholarships. She has held the offices of president, treasurer and reporter, and she currently is the group’s reporter and the chair for Fremont County CattleWomen’s educational outreach. She also served as State CattleWomen representative for Southeastern Colorado and she represents the group on the Mini College Planning Committee for Pueblo Community College. Additionally, Colette spearheads several elementary classroom presentations each year, a curriculum she has been presenting since she retired from teaching. The titles of the two programs are “Care of Cattle and Their By-Products” given to second-graders and “How Miners, Fur Traders and Cowboys Influenced the History of Colorado” given to fourth-graders in Cañon City, Florence, Cotopaxi, Milliken, Johnstown and Fort Collins.

Colette speaks to nearly 1,000 students each year. She’s fondly referred to by some as the “cow lady,” and teachers look forward to her visiting their class each year to give her “cow talk.” “I love the teaching part, but the public is so unaware and they need to be educated,” she said, adding that she encourages students to relay what they’ve learned from the cow talk to their parents. “People do not realize the value — not only of the economy in Colorado — but the value that they give to us — a gift each day.” More than a dozen teachers also submitted letters of nomination for the statewide honor. Cindy Grooters wrote, “Early every March, mining picks, gold pans, branding irons, cowboy attire, ropes and snacks are toted into the classroom with love.” She said Colette’s passion for sharing her wealth of information and tubs of treasures is contagious. “She captivates the students with her knowledge of cattle and their importance to Colorado’s past, as well as present.” Donna Biemiller said Colette is a “superior advocate for cattle” and a “distinct leader” in the promotion of cattle among school-aged children. “She is masterful at instructing students in an interactive, engaging manner that leaves them wanting to learn more about this remarkable animal. ... Weeks later, students are overheard discussing what they learned from her educational extravaganza.” The real takeaway, Laura Schilf said, is when students learn the benefit of raising cattle by making real-life connections with the amazing amount of beef by-products that they consume. The plaque that Colette received in honor of her recognition was so large it had to be brought home in a truck. She plans to hang it on an exterior fence at her home. “It was pretty amazing to me that it is so large and heavy and beautiful,” she said. “Since they said it’s made of stainless steel, it will outlast my lifetime, so will the honor.”

Best Nachos In Town

Beer-Nacho Cheese Ingredients: 1/2 pound of Monterey Jack cheese 1/2 pound of sharp yellow cheddar 1 cup of beer, I used Negra Modelo 1/2 cup of whole milk 2 tablespoons of flour 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter chorizo, cooked

tortilla chips 1 bunch of green onions, thinly sliced 1/2 bunch of cilantro, chopped sliced pickled jalapenos 1 large avocado, sliced 1/2 can of refried black beans sour cream lime wedges

To make the beer nacho cheese, grate the cheese. Combine milk and beer in a small sauce pan and heat until warm, but not boiling. Melt the butter in a medium sauce pan over medium high heat. Once melted add the flour, one tablespoon at a time stirring constantly with a wood spoon until smooth and incorporated. Then add the warm beermilk mixture 1/3 at a time, continuing stirring, until incorporated. Lower heat to medium low heat and add both cheeses. To assemble the nachos, preheat the oven to 375 with the rack positioned in the middle. Heat up the refried beans in a pan until warm and runny. I add a little water until I get a runnier consistency. Add 1/3 of chips and pour 1/3 of beans and 1/3 of cheese over the layer. Repeat until you use all the chips and cheese. Bake for 10 minutes until chips are toasted on the edges. Top with chorizo, pickled jalapeno slices, avocado, green onions and cilantro. Serve with lime wedges and top with a dollop of sour cream.
