Anna C. Richardson Swihart July 10, 1923 ~ May 23, 2019

Anna C. Richardson Swihart, Cañon City's first woman to be named Realtor of the Year (1987) was welcomed into Heaven on May 23, 2019. She was born in Harrah, OK in 1923: the first child born to PE and Gladys Carpenter. Anna Lilac was the first person in her family to be a valedictorian. She was Harrah High School's Valedictorian of 1941 and delivered a speech full of hope and, with Pearl Harbor still fresh in their minds, recognized the "revolution taking place around us". As a fresh graduate from Hills Business University in Oklahoma City, she took the train to Wash DC and began working for the new Social Security Office. Another first is that she paid her first income tax bill by depleting the savings account she had since childhood! Anna transferred to Kansas City, joined the USO Girls' Choral Club, and met her husband, the late Deal Richardson of Cañon City. They married in 1944 and moved to Colorado. She spent her life as a devoted mother to eight children ensuring them of a loving home with solid spiritual values, whether in Buena Vista or Cañon City. When her first marriage ended and her children were raised, Anna embarked on a new career in real estate. By 1978, she had received the Educational Achievement in Real Estate award, earned her broker license, and was serving as second vice-president of the Business and Professional Women's Club. A year later, she opened her own real estate office in Cañon City: Anna Realty, Your Bridge Between Homes. Anna was a charter member and past president of the Toastmistress Club of Cañon City. In 1983, she was named Cañon City's Business Woman of the Year. George Swihart came into Anna's life, and they were married in 1987. They enjoyed traveling until his death in 1994, including a memorable trip to Hawaii. Never one to slow down, Anna moved

to Salida where she was co-owner and hostess of a bed and breakfast for ten years. She returned to Cañon City in 2010. In addition to playing the piano, Anna found relaxation in painting, gardening, sewing, and reading, including a daily dose from her Bible. A member of the First United Methodist Church, Anna served as a trustee, was in the hand bell choir, loaded her van with friends to attend women's retreats, and joined other women in making quilts to be given away. She was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, performed at nursing homes with the Red Bowtie Band, and took up line dancing with a group that march-danced in local parades. She is survived by her children, Arthur (Honey), Deanna (Bill), Candice Richardson, and Gayle Harp of Cañon City, Omar (Anne) Richardson of Grand Junction, Dan (Marsha) Richardson of Texas, and Cheryl (Don) Monaghan of Washington. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gene Carpenter (Florida); sister, Crystal Merritt (Oklahoma); and her eldest son, Weldon. Anna was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by her children, friends, numerous nieces and nephews, her cousins, Echo Lipe and Peggy Gervais, 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren. Anna's favorite saying was, "You have to get up early if you are going to have any fun!" Her deepest wish is for people to accept Christ as their Savior. May we all continue to follow her shining example and think of others first. James "Jim" McCormick April 21, 1930 ~ June 14, 2019

James "Jim" William McCormick, 89, of Salida died on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Skyline Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Canon City, CO. He was born April 21, 1930 to Jim and Willa McCormick at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, CO. He lived in Canon City during his growing up years and graduated from Canon City High School in 1948. He attended Western State College in Gunnison, CO, where he met the love of his life, Ellen Byerly. They were married in Fowler, CO, on September 6, 1951. He saw Ellen at college and announced to his buddies that he was going to marry that cute redhead. They've been married 67 years. Together they raised four little redheads; Ginger, Janet, Jody, Jill. Jim worked with his father in the automotive business in Canon City before moving his young family to Salida to open his own McCormick Auto, eventually adding on a rental shop. He loved being a small business owner which included building homes and apartments. A roofing business was next on his agenda. Jim had many fine business partners. He often said he'd never retire since it wasn't in the Bible. Jim was a hardworking man, but he also loved to play hard with family and friends. With the rental shop came lots of toys like snowmobiles, boats, motorcycles, ATVs and mini bikes. Jim and Ellen loved to travel together in their camper. Many weekends were spent at the family cabin up on Monarch fixing it up, hiking, fishing or playing horseshoes. He loved to go hunting and

would fill the freezer with venison or elk meat each fall. Jim had a heart for community service. He joined the Jaycees in Canon City. With the move to Salida he became an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. He was a charter member of the Vaqueros as well as the UAWCD (Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District). He enjoyed the Rotary Club, Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce and was quite active in the Republican Party. Joining the Salida City Council gave him even more opportunities to make a difference in the town he loved. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Salida; sister, Judy (Lynn) Alexander of Grand Junction; daughters, Ginger Soderlund of Denver, Janet (Mark) Hanley of Kirksville, MO, Jody (Cary) Gloor of Salida; grandchildren, Kyle & Eric Soderlund, Matthew Hanley, Kelly Heim, Colleen Murray, Christina Sonheim, and Andrew, Sarah & Timothy Gloor; plus 11 great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jill Erbsen in 2013 and his first grandchild, Patrick Hanley in 1981. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6th at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Salida. William Scott (Bill) Louk February 22, 1935 - June 10, 2019

William Scott (Bill) Louk, 84, of Canon City, Colorado, passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of June 10th, 2019. Bill was born in Long Beach, California to Asa V. Louk and Mary L. (Layden) Louk. He was raised in Long Beach, CA and attended Wilson High School. At seventeen, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country. He was a hospital corpsman and combat medic with the United States Navy and U.S. Marine Corps in both the Korean conflict and the Vietnam war. He retired in 1972 after 20 years of honorable service. While serving in the U.S. Navy he became a registered radiological technician. He received a Meritorious Mast award, two bronze stars, and several good conduct medals, among others. After his retirement from the military, Bill was employed by the Colorado Department of Corrections for 20 years in Canon City, Colorado. He retired as a lieutenant in 1992. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his beautiful wife of 64 years, Helen Marie Brito-Louk in 2017; his grandson, Cody T. Louk in 2006; his son-in-law, David M. Johnson in 2019; older brother, Bob Louk; and older sister, Vivian Watson. Bill is survived by his children, David Louk (Becky) of Winnemucca, Nevada, Terecita Louk-Johnson of Canon City, Colorado, Lorri Louk-Shampine (Eric) of Littleton, Colorado; sister, Laura Brito of

Modesto, California; grandchildren, Wendy (Mike) Carpenter, David Bennett, Shane Bennett, Cameron Shampine, Collin Shampine; and two great grandchildren, Kaleb Howell and Marley Jett; along with many nieces and nephews. Bill was also active in the community as a volunteer with programs in the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Share Colorado program, Fremont county visitor centers, and Starpoint with handicapped individuals. He and Helen also volunteered at many other community programs after retirement. His Catholic faith was a very important aspect of his life as was his wife Helen. His love for his family was more than words could express. Bill and Helen will be laid to rest together for eternity at a later date in the Uncompahgre Memorial Garden in Montrose, Colorado. Funeral services will be held at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Canon City, Colorado. A Rosary service will be held Wednesday June 19th, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. Deacon Merle Runck will preside. A burial mass will be held at St. Michaels Catholic Church on Thursday June 20th at 11:00 a.m. Father Jesse Perez will officiate the mass. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held by the family at the home of Terecita Louk-Johnson at 281 Savage Loop, Canon City, Colorado.

Centura Health Urgent Care Cañon City back at U.S. 50 location Centura Health Urgent Care Cañon City has returned to its regular location at 3245 U.S. 50 after a refreshing remodel. CHUC has received new ﬂooring, countertops, paint and art, creating an updated, inviting environment for patients. “Our associates and patients have said the update is fresh and exciting,” said Joe Garcia, clinical supervisor, Centura Health Urgent Care Cañon City. “They talk about it like it’s an entirely new building!” Garcia said everyone pitched in to help during the move. From associates to providers, the entire urgent care family pitched in, moving monitors, medical equipment and furniture

to their temporary location within St. Thomas More Hospital and back to the urgent care building after the renovation was completed. Garcia is not only thankful for the effort put in by the CHUC team, but for everyone at STM who made them feel at home during their transition. “The hospitality we received while we were at St. Thomas More Hospital was incredible,” Garcia said. “We were treated like guests by everyone there. I want to speciﬁcally mention a few groups that did a lot for us during our time there. Housekeeping, security, patient access, radiology, everyone in the café and our volunteers all played a big part in our comfort and

success during our short stay. “STM’s CEO, Kristi Olson, also made sure we were included in hospital celebrations and communications while we were there. It continued the cultivation of a great relationship with the hospital and made me proud to be part of Centura Health.” Garcia said CHUC has used the move during the remodel to reorganize, streamline and become more efﬁcient. Unused equipment was not brought back in, reducing clutter and adding to the visual appeal. He is happy with the new look and feel of the building and is proud to offer up such an appealing and relaxing setting for patients and associates.

19th annual State-Wide Talent Competition set for June 28-30

The Colorado Country Music Association is getting all keyed up for its 19th annual State-Wide Talent Competition at the Rialto Theater, 209 West Main St., in Florence. Competition days are June 28-29, beginning at 9 a.m. On June 30, events will begin at 10 a.m. for Stage Presence Class and Songwriting Class. The award show will begin at 1 p.m. “We’re looking forward to working with the Rialto Theater board,” said Misty Dawn, CCMA CEO/President. “If you love music you will enjoy the great talent Colorado has to offer at this competition.” Admission is $10 for one day or $25 for a three-day pass. The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging is partnering with the Social Security Administration to provide the third year of Social Security 101 classes. Black Hills Energy reps field questions about proposed 39-mile transmission line Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Representatives of Black Hills Energy hosted a community open house Tuesday to meet with the public and answer questions about the Reliability Upgrade for Southern Colorado project, formerly called the Cañon West Reliability Project. The name of the project was changed to better portray its intent, which is to increase reliability for all customers in the Southern Colorado service center, said Seth Boutilier, the project manager. The project calls for a proposed 39mile, 115-kilovolt transmission line that would travel from Pueblo West to West Cañon City with three new substations located in the industrial park of Pueblo West, at the intersection of 115th and K streets in Penrose, and west of the Hogbacks in Cañon City. Tyler Mansholt, corporate counsel for Black Hills Energy, said the central idea of the proposed route, which mirrors the existing 230-kV Western Area Power Administration line, is to try to mitigate the impacts to homeowners. He said many people ask why Black Hills won’t put the new line where the current line already exists. “The problem there is you’re not doing any kind of prudent long-term or shortterm transmission line planning,” he said. He said one of the concerns with the existing line is outages from natural disasters, and that the same issues and the same outages will take place if the new line goes along the same route. “You won’t reduce the outages or increase the reliability beneﬁts, instead, you can have the same problem with those natural disasters,” he said. “If you have a line continuously going a different route, which is trying to limit impacts by following another transmission line, you have two ways of trying to increase your reliability to the system.” If the proposed new line were to go down, this current line would serve as a backup. “Hopefully, we have less frequent, less severe outages, increasing the reliability for the whole system,” he said. He said the new substations also will permit users in the areas to use the new transmission line, providing more opportunities for growth and economic development. Dan Witt, the manager of operations for Penrose and Cañon City, said based on public input, the formerly proposed route

Every time we turn around, they come up with a different rational or reason why they are doing this.” Steve Andrews, who also is part of the Penrose Neighbors for a Better Route, shared information about battery storage, an alternative to new transmission lines. “All I’ve heard today is ‘this route’ or ‘that route,’ nothing about looking at a totally new alternative,” he said. “They want reliability – battery storage will do that just as effectively as transmission lines. The transmission line is the old concept, de-centralized generation is the new one,

Black Hills is expected to go before the Fremont County Planning & Zoning Committee this year to apply for a special use permit and then before the Fremont County Board of Commissioners for ﬁnal approval. Construction is slated to begin in 2020.
