Let ter From The Director

Directors Letter: I would like to recognize and thank a number of individuals and organizations who have recently completed projects that have been very beneficial to the District and the citizens we serve. Their time, dedication and craftsmanship involved with these projects are a great example of local volunteers making a positive difference in our communities and at the same time improving recreational opportunities for all. • The Cañonland Walkers and Hikers Club – this dedicated group of volunteers have completed construction of the new Eagle Wing Trailhead / Hecker Family Memorial Picnic Shelter, a new map kiosk at the trailhead and a new map kiosk for Ecology Park. Also thanks to Skyline Roofing and Fremont Concrete for their contributions to this project. • The Volunteer group from Mountain View Community Church for the repainting of the exterior of the R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool building. Lisa Soto and crew did an excellent job of making the 50+ year old building look almost like new. Also thanks to Cañon City True Value and Home Depot for donating the necessary paint and materials. • Boy Scout Ranger Bolton, member Troop 519, for his Eagle Scout Project which involved constructing four new elevated growing beds inside the Ash Street Community Garden. These new beds will allow persons with limited mobility the opportunity to have their own garden plot next season. Thanks to the Royal Gorge Bridge Company for providing materials for this project. • Boy Scout Ethan Sawyer, member Troop 519, for his Eagle Scout Project involving improvements to the Pathfinder Park Fishing Pond camping area. This project involved cleaning up the area and constructing a new campfire ring and two new wood benches. The District is progressing in partnership with the City of Florence, Fremont Sanitation District, City of Cañon City, CDOT and local landowners to extend the Arkansas Riverwalk Trail System from MacKenzie Avenue to Florence River Park. We will be working on the study, design and engineering phase of the project in the coming months. We anticipate holding one or two public meetings involving this project to seek additional public input and disseminate project information. The District was recently awarded the Colorado Lottery’s Starburst Award for the new Rouse Park Pickleball Courts Project. This involved replacing the two closed tennis courts in the southwest corner of the park with six new dedicated pickleball courts, new sidewalks and fencing. Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) contributed the majority of the funding for this court improvement project. This is a shared honor with the local pickleball group and all of those citizens who contributed to the court project. The City of Cañon City, Recreation District and a local group of volunteers are proceeding with a Feasibility Study for a new Community Recreation Center including an indoor aquatic facility. This process will also involve community meetings and a public survey process to help determine interest and support for a community recreation center. Jim Hoar Executive Director

About Us / Kids Klub

About Us

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District is a special district that was established in 1965. The District’s main source of funding comes in the form of property tax, which is collected from an area that is approximately 115 square miles in size. The District is governed by a five member Board, whom are elected at large from citizens living or owning property within the District boundaries. Elections are conducted in May of every even year. The Board conducts monthly meetings at the District’s main office, 575 Ash, St., on the second Tuesday of every month beginning at 7:00 pm. The District currently owns and operates Rouse Park, John Griffin Regional Park, Old Harrison Park, Arkansas Riverwalk, Ropes Challenge Course, R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool, Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park, Ash Street Community Garden, Schepp Open Space and Eagle Wing Trailhead, and the Community Room, which is located within the main office. The District coowns and operates Pathfinder Regional Park with Fremont County. Every year the Board of Directors and the District Staff strive to improve the programs and facilities offered to the community. All the programs and activities listed in this Activity Guide are designed to meet the recreational needs of the public. We of course welcome any suggestions or input as our goal is to better serve the community. The District works in conjunction with the City of Cañon City, Fremont County, Cañon City RE-1 School District, Florence-Penrose RE-2 School District, Fremont Sanitation District and many local businesses and non-profits to provide services to the citizens of the community. The District currently employs 12-full time employees and about 150 seasonal and part time employees. The District is always seeking and recruiting volunteer coaches, officials, supervisors, and instructors, who have a skill or interest to share. Kids Klub

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM The Recreation District offers a wonderful child care program from the convenience of your child’s school known as KIDS KLUB. This program has been around for nearly 30 years and provides a safe secure environment for your children. Whether you have to be at work or simply looking for a fun place to take your child after school or on no school days, this program has it all. KIDS KLUB has a ton of fun activities going on. We offer everything from sports, free play, arts and crafts, board games, etc. Some kids spend time doing their homework or simply reading during our quiet time. Your child can socialize with others, make new friends, learn a new hobby, finish their school work or just enjoy the many leisure/recreational activities offered in a safe and secure environment from the convenience of their school building. All KIDS KLUB sites are state licensed and certified as day care providers for children. So don’t wait any longer to join our exciting Kids Klub Program that offers activities in a fun and safe environment. Kids Klub will be open at Washington for no school days, teacher work days and all school breaks including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break! Kids Klub is only closed on Holidays and all Snow Closure Days. Starting in late October or early November we will offer online registration and scheduling through our new software system, Active Network. RECREATION DISTRICT FACILITIES

ARKANSAS RIVERWALK DOG PARK The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District’s Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park opened in June of 2011. This park was made possible by the Recreation District, and the Dog Park Committee, and several financial contributions from local businesses. Since that time it has undergone several changes and improvements. The Habitat for Humanity Agility Course was added in the northeast corner and a pavilion was completed in 2014.

HARRISON PARK The Harrison Park was acquired by the Recreation District in July of 2008 from the Cañon City RE-1 School District. Thanks to a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado the park was renovated and opened in late 2011. Now this neighborhood park features a pavilion, upgraded playground, basketball court, climbing boulders, a skate ramp, a rest room facility, and a large field. The facility has become a popular location for family gatherings, birthday parties, and sports practices. PATHFINDER REGIONAL PARK Pathfinder Park opened in the fall of 2007 and over the past 10 years a lot of improvements have been made, thanks in part to multiple grants from Great Outdoors Colorado, the Gates Foundation and strong community support. The park includes a playground, a fishing pond, trails and multiple sports fields. The Miners Pavilion is booked several weekends each month for parties, reunions and even weddings. Trail additions and bridges have been made thanks to the Cañon City High School Civics classes and local Boy Scout Troops. ROUSE PARK Rouse Park was the first park owned and operated

by the Recreation District with fields, pavilions, and a playground area. The baseball and softball fields are used for 9 to 10 months out of the year by recreation programs, Cañon City High School, and area traveling teams. This facility hosts several baseball and softball tournaments throughout the year and features many out of community teams. The west end of the facility is used for football and soccer practices and games and the pavilions host parties, weddings, and other functions throughout the year. In the fall of 2016 renovations to the southwest corner of the park added six new pickleball courts. This is one of the most used parks in the Recreation District and in the community as a whole. In the fall of 2016, six new pickleball courts ARCHERY RANGE The Archery Range, located at 575 Ash Street just east of the office building, is open to the public at all times during day light hours. There are targets at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards. The Archery range has a new addition, a shooting platform. The rules for the facility are posted at the range. Please come down and utilize the facility and all it has to offer! EAGLE WING TRAILHEAD/ SOUTH CANON TRAILS At the intersection of Colburn Lane and New York Ave. are the Eagle Wing Trailhead and Schepp Open Space. This is our most recent trail addition and provides recreation access to several popular and existing parks and trails in the southwest area of Cañon City, including Ecology Park and Temple Canyon. It is an access point to the 10 miles of the South Cañon Trail system located on BLM land, County land, and Recreation District land. Located at the Trailhead is the Hecker Family Memorial Picnic Shelter.

YOUTH WRESTLING The wrestling program is for boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 who wish to learn the fundamentals of wrestling. Wrestlers will learn escapes, takedowns, rides, and many more moves. Children will wrestle other children in the same weight bracket. Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, pick-up a schedule when you register. Practice days are subject to change and there will be no practices over the holiday breaks. Our organization is registered with the Pikes Peak Wrestling League, which will give all of our participants the opportunity to participate in youth wrestling tournaments around the state throughout the winter. Participation in the tournaments is not mandatory. It is just an option for any child in our program. All kids will show up at 5 p.m. and then be divided into sessions by the coaches based on skill level and age. The coaches will make this determination.

The basketball program is geared toward teaching the fundamentals of the game, sportsmanship, teamwork, and having fun. Games will be played at Harrison School and Cañon City Middle School. The season will be seven or eight weeks depending on the division.

This program is for boys and girls wanting to participate in the fast paced game of Futsal Soccer. This is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The purpose of the futsal program is emphasizing skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. This is a game that will improve your passing and footwork skills. All games are 5-on-5 and there are goalies. The futsal ball is a weighted soccer ball which creates a greater emphasis on ball control and passing.

Trailheads and parking lots are located in several locations. Going from west to east, the Tunnel Drive Trailhead is located west of Cañon City off of Highway 50 and overlooks the Arkansas River and railroad tracks as it heads west into the entrance of the Royal Gorge. It is a narrow trail that winds its way through three tunnels of solid granite!

The Arkansas Riverwalk

The Arkansas Riverwalk contains seven miles of trail that winds along the Arkansas River through Cañon City and beyond. The trail covers many types of terrain and natural areas including dense cottonwood forests and native wetlands. The trail has a hard-packed, crushed gravel surface and follows an old railroad bed much of the way. The trail is open to many uses, which include: running, walking, biking and even horse riding on the John Griffin Park Bluff Trail. Your å dogs are welcome too, but please keep them on a leash and be sure to pick up after them. Nature enthusiasts have encountered numerous species of birds and fowl along the Arkansas Riverwalk. Be sure to keep a look out for wildlife such as bears and mountain lions, they have been known to frequent the areas around the trail as well.

The center of the Arkansas Riverwalk lies within John Griffin Regional Park. The trail loops through the park with three interconnecting trails, the River Trail, the Middle Trail and the Bluff Trail. John Griffin Regional Park is a natural area complete with wetlands and wildlife. There are numerous park benches throughout, but bring your own water as there is none available. There are also ten exercise stations along the river trail.

The Brookside Trailhead is off of Mackenzie Avenue and will take you west towards Cañon City and the Recreation District Office.

Located beside the Recreation District Office, the Ash Trailhead provides plenty of parking and access to John Griffin Park. You can loop around the park by using both the Bluff Trail and River Trail.

The Arkansas Riverwalk

Recently the City of Cañon City extended the Arkansas Riverwalk on the west end of town from Centennial Park to Tunnel Drive and Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus. Future plans to extend the Arkansas Riverwalk include connecting Mackenzie Avenue to Pathfinder Regional Park and Florence River Park.

ADULT SPORTS PROCEDURES (AS OF MAY 2008)

Registration: Full payment must be received before the program deadline in order to reserve a spot in a league. Teams will only be taken after the deadline if it aids the program coordinator in scheduling. Example: an odd number of teams to an even number. League Refunds: If a program does not get at least 4 registered teams the league will not go. Full refunds will be distributed to those teams that have paid. If 4 teams are registered the program will run. Player Eligibility: Players must sign and complete their team roster before participating in the program. All players must be at least 18 years of age and no longer in High School in order to participate. Minors are not allowed to participate in Adult Sports. Players cannot be on two teams within the same league. Team Rosters: There will be a drop-dead date as to which no more names can be added to a roster. At this point the roster becomes frozen and no players can be added or removed. It will be approximately 60% through the regular season and will be printed on the schedules. Furthermore, all adult team rosters will have a limited number of players per specific sport. All legal players then on the roster will be eligible to participate in the post-season. All team rosters, waivers and drop forms will be kept in the on-site notebook. Legal Players: A player is not legal until they have signed and completed the roster. A printed name on the roster is not legal until it has been signed, but it does count towards the roster limit. A player must also compete in one game prior to the roster deadline to be legal. Adding Players to the Team Roster: If a team has not reached their roster limit before the roster deadline, they can add players by simply having them sign and complete the roster before participating. If a team has reached their limit of players, they cannot add a player until a player has dropped using the drop form. Removing Players from the Team Roster: Once a player has signed a team’s roster they are a legal player and must sign a drop form in order to not be counted towards the team’s roster limit, the team manager may remove any unsigned players from the roster to add players before the roster deadline. Game Challenges: A game may not be challenged after it has been completed. If at any time during the course of a game a team wants to challenge the opposing team’s roster they may do so. They can challenge roster limits, legal players or player eligibility. What is in the on-site notebook is official. A team playing with an illegal roster will forfeit the game. Forfeit Penalty: Teams that forfeit without a 24-hour notice to the Program Coordinator will be penalized a fee of $25. The penalty must be submitted to the Recreation District Office or employee before the team is allowed to participate in the next scheduled game. A game forfeited due to a challenge does not constitute a penalty. Awards: The first place team will receive T-shirts for every player listed on their roster and a 1st place plaque. The post-season playoffs or tournament will determine the winners in each league. If there is not a playoff or tournament, the league winners will be based on the regular season. Tie Breakers: Most ties will be decided to determine seeds for post-season play. Tiebreakers will follow the steps listed below when applicable and in order. Head to Head: record of the teams in question vs each other, in case of a 3-way tie we look at the head to head records between each team involved Division Record: record vs teams within their division Games vs better teams: record vs teams above the teams in question Point System: three points will be given for every win and 1 point for every tie Total Scoring Against: total number of points scored against for the entire season will be considered. In case of forfeits, the average points scored from the games played will be figured in. Total Scoring For: total number of points scored for the entire season will be considered. In case of forfeits, the average points scored from the games played will be figured in. Coin Toss: a coin flip will be used as a last resort

ADULT ADULT SOFTBALL SOFTBALL FIRST FIRST SEASON SEASON

The 2018 Adult Softball program will consist of two seasons. The First Season will run from May through the middle of July. The Second Season will follow from early August through October. The First Season information is posted below. Teams must provide their own balls. Rules and Policies will be reviewed at the managers meeting before the season begins. Teams will play an 8-game season followed by an end of season double elimination tournament. Regular season games may be made up on weekday evenings and the tournaments for Season I could be played on a weekend if rainouts occur! Each team is guaranteed 10-games. The end of season double elimination tournament will determine each league’s champions. League play is for tournament seeding only. WHAT IS A ROPES AND CHALLENGE COURSE?

Our ropes challenge course is designed to develop personal and group strengths, to break through limitations through exploring new avenues of communication by building support networks. At the ropes challenge course, our activities are created to deliver mental, physical, and emotional challenges to initiate team development. We understand that each group dynamic is different, that is why each experience at the ropes challenge course can be adapted to meet the needs of each group. The physical and psychological safety of each participant is always of the utmost and primary concern of the program instructors.

WHO CAN RENT THE ROPES COURSE? Anyone can rent the course! School groups, sports groups, corporate groups, birthday parties, church groups, first responders, etc.!

HOW DO I RESERVE THE ROPES COURSE?  Call the Recreation District (719) 275-1578 or email the Course Director browng1991@gmail.com.  Be prepared with date and program time.  Waiver forms will be emailed or available for pick up before the event date.  Payment is required before event date.

MOBILE/TRAVELING PROGRAMS The Ropes Challenge Course offers a mobile program to those within traveling distance. This program allows for inside or outside programs. Mobile programs are designed to accommodate groups who are seeking team development within their own facility. Our mobile program has the same goal as our low programs with the ability to come meet you where you’re at!

IS THE ROPES CHALLENGE COURSE AVAILABLE YEAR ROUND? The course is available year round (weather permitting). Mobile low course is available year round and can travel to any location within the Canon City area.

All Ropes Course fees include equipment and trained facilitator. The deposit must be paid at the time of registration and is non-refundable. The remaining balance is due before your ropes course session begins.

Turkey Bowl 2017

The Recreation District’s annual Turkey Bowl will be held on November 18th, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The Turkey Bowl is a 4-on-4 Flag Football tournament with 7-different divisions. Rosters are limited to 6-players. The Turkey Bowl is open to teams in the age groups listed below. Register early as only the first 60 teams to register will be accepted due to the number of fields. TURKEY TROT 5K The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District will host the Turkey Trot Fun Run at Pathfinder Park on Saturday, November 18th. The 5K run will begin at 10 a.m. The course is on maintained trails and dirt roads with little to no elevation changes. This run is all about having fun as it is not a timed event. We encourage all participants to dress in their best Thanksgiving costume and we will have an award for the best costume. Once the run begins all participants will make their way around the 5K course and stop at selected stations. At each station you will receive parts of a head band to construct and wear. Each runner will also receive a ticket for a drawing after the run. Instead of handing out place awards all of the winners will be drawn at random. This run is to encourage people to get outside and have a good time while exercising. Pets will also be allowed to participate in the event, but the owners are responsible for cleaning up after them. Pets are encouraged to dress up as well. Following the run we encourage everyone to hang out at Pathfinder Park for awards and enjoy our food vendors. All early registrants will receive a t-shirt and participants who register late will get a t-shirt while supplies last.

Aftermath Halloween 2017

Come and witness the horror and darkness of Halloween like never before as you tour the property to the east of the Recreation District. Keep an eye out for terror at every turn; after all, they have already been watching you. “Aftermath” will be held at the Recreation District office, 575 Ash Street in Cañon City. Any child under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and have parent permission. A bonfire in the field adjacent to the house is tentatively scheduled each night of Aftermath. 2018 SPRING BONFIRE

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District is inviting everyone to our Spring Bonfire, a great family event on Friday evening, April 20th. The event will be located on the grounds just east of the Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park, which is east of the Recreation District offices at 575 Ash Street. You are more than welcome to bring your own lawn chairs, enjoy the fire, listen to some music, and maybe get some S’mores from our food vendors. This event is BYOB, bring your own beverage, but sodas, water, hot chocolate, and other concession items will be available for purchase through the food vendors. The event opens up at 7 pm and you may park your vehicle by the Dog Park and Archery Range or at any of the Recreation District’s Riverwalk Parking areas. We will light the bonfire a little after 7:30. Join us for the Spring Bonfire and bring the entire family. This is a FREE event!!!

CLEAN UP GREEN UP

The Arkansas River and the Arkansas Riverwalk will be the focus of this year’s Clean Up / Green Up in Cañon City. All across Colorado volunteers will be picking up trash to help clean up and green up the state’s rivers and by-ways. There will be breakfast offered to all of our volunteers. Everyone is encouraged to attend, especially the Riverwalk users. Plan to join us for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and the cleaning begins at 9:00 a.m. Garbage bags will be provided. The Canon City Area Recreation and Park District is switching to new registration software which will be a benefit to our customers in many ways. Starting this fall we will be working with Active Network for all of our registration and facility reservation needs. This will also include our Kids Klub program. You will now be able to register for any of our programs online from the convenience of your home, office, or even smartphone. This is a mobile friendly system. You will also be able to receive changes to game schedules, practice schedules, registration reminders, and weather cancelations via text and email. Active Network will enable you to print off or review a weekly or monthly calendar of activities both youth and adults are participating in. You will be able to link over to our Active Network site from our current website, www. ccrec.org and create your Active Network account. The Recreation District will be providing more information on Active Network this fall and winter. This program is designed to give the consumer a better online experience when it comes to your recreation needs.

COMMUNITY GARDEN The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District operates the Ash Street Community Garden on our property in the southeast corner of the Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park. Each year you may reserve your plot by registering at the Recreation District offices during normal business hours. Before planting your tomatoes and summer squash, you must register for a plot and sign a simple agreement with the Recreation District. This has become a popular Community Garden and space is limited. The plots are available on a first come, first serve basis. There is an annual fee of $10 for the small plots and $15 for the larger plots, payable at the Recreation District offices. Once all of the spaces are reserved we will begin a waiting list, so register soon. There are 25 total plots for 2018.
