Finding the right camp for your child
AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION
You are considering a summer camp, but how to choose?
There’s a camp that is ideally suited for every child, providing a summer of growth and fun whether your child attends a day or overnight camp, a specialized or traditional camp With a little help from the camp professionals at the American Camp Association, here’s some sound advice that helps parents sort through the choices and benefits that camp delivers. As spring approaches, parents and children can look forward to planning for the future – a future that includes the opportunities for exploration and discovery that arrives with summer camp.
HOW TO DECIDE WHEN YOUR CHILD IS READY FOR CAMP
Children are ready for new experiences at different stages. Parents know their children best and these questions can help gauge whether this is the summer your child will start camp. What is your child’s age, and what is your perception of his or her readiness level? Children under seven who have not had overnight experiences may do better with a day camp as their first camp experience. If you think your child might not be ready for an overnight camp experience, consider the day camp experience to prepare him or her for future overnight camp.
• How did your child become interested in camp? Does your child talk about camp on a

“We live in a fast-paced world, but our nervous systems prefer anything but fast.”
SARAH FUHREY HUBER
RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Across Colorado, summer camps provide a rare commodity: long stretches of screen-free time. From forest schools to overnight programs, camp directors say that unplugging does more than give kids a break from devices – it transforms how they play, interact with
others and discover.
“We live in a fast-paced world, but our nervous systems prefer anything but fast,” said Elizabeth Baker, director of Living Arts School in Boulder. “Children who are allowed to take a pause from overscheduled, overmanaged activities and just be are better able to regulate themselves and their social interactions.”
At Living Arts, days are built around unstructured time in nature. Campers climb over log piles, build forts, race through the woods and invent games with little adult direction. Baker said those moments “are all tools for building self-regulation and emotional literacy.”
Camp is also an opportunity for a mental reset. She explained, “When children first arrive to the forest, they often enter the phase we call ‘getting

their forest legs.’ It’s not just learning how to walk on uneven terrain; it’s learning how to unplug from a digital landscape and settle into a rhythm that’s in sync with nature.”
At YMCA camps in Northern Colorado, staff see similar changes, especially during overnight sessions, noted Andra Coberly Webster, executive director of communications. “When you give kids a break from screens, they refocus on playing, exploring and connecting with their peers and with nature,” she said. “Once a week of sleepaway camp is finished, campers talk about how they didn’t even miss screens.”
Webster said camp can break the “dopamine cycle” that comes with social media and constant notifications. Without the quick hits of digital stimulation, children rediscover what it means to be bored, usually leading to curiosity and creativity.
At Thorne Nature Experience in Lafayette, boredom becomes the gateway to imagination. “Unstructured time for kids allows their imagination to be activated in ways they normally don’t have the free space for,” said program director Molly Murphy “They create pinecone families or build natural shelters with their friends to play house.”
Devices like phones are prohibited at many camps, and campers often remark that the days feel longer, she said. That shift in time perception allows for deeper engagement, including multiday projects like wood whittling or nature journaling.
“The delayed gratification of finishing a project after working on it for multiple days gives campers a newfound appreciation for the world,” Murphy said.
Free play in nature can create meaningful experiences that extend beyond camp. Anna Judy, program director at Highlands Camp & Retreat Center, said, “As children play with natural materials, they build a relationship with the earth. Once a relationship is formed, there’s a feeling of care and responsibility that follows.”
Judy said unstructured play teaches important social skills, too. “As children negotiate situations during free play, they learn to make decisions, solve problems and develop social skills for building friendships. When we observe kids playing outside, we see collaboration, teamwork and creativity.”
That slower pace transforms friendships in other camps as well. At Living Arts, nature immersion encourages cooperation. Baker said, “Because there’s time and space for relationships, children are allowed to slowly build their muscles of social and emotional literacy.”
At Cal-Wood Education Center, retreats and summer camp coordinator Zoë Barley said she has noticed that friendships often form faster without the safety net of a phone. “They must

come up with a new conversational topic or find a shared interest,” she said. “They push past that initial discomfort, and that’s where connection happens.”
The benefits do not stop when camp ends. Parents frequently report that their children come home wanting to spend more time outside. Baker said her own kids now insist on playing outdoors, even in the rain.
“At Thorne, many campers want to revisit the places we explored,” Murphy said. “Looking for crawfish at a local lake or playing a game they learned at camp doesn’t just stay at camp.”
Barley hears similar feedback from families. “Children are often hesitant to return to their screens, ” she said.
“They’re better at naturally moderating their time online and more eager to continue hobbies they discovered at camp. ”
Judy said Highlands campers return home better prepared for “real-life human interactions.” She continued, “In a society that’s become increasingly disconnected, summer camp shows us what’s possible when we reconnect, get outside and fall back in love with the world.”
in a wide range of interest areas, from sports and outdoor adventures to arts and technology, that may not be available during the regular school year.
“These camps provide a great opportunity for parents to encourage their children to step outside their comfort zones in a safe and supportive setting without the fear of failure or grades,” she says. “Through specialized programming and enthusiastic instructors, summer camps have the potential to uncover hidden talents or passions.”
programming include Bixby and Friends. Bixby School’s play-based summer camp features plenty of openended creative pursuits and outdoor time on a safe and beautiful 3-acre campus, open to all kindergarten through sixth-graders.

Summer Made Simple
Combining
REBECCA FURUTA
RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Once upon a summer, going to camp meant one place, one program, all season long. Today’s families are rewriting that script. Between specialty camps, flexible schedules and a growing focus on balance (for kids and parents), summer planning has become less about locking in a single experience, and more about curating the right mix.
Blending different types of camp experiences can give children a richer, more well-rounded summer than sticking with just one traditional camp format. Families can augment structured day camps with specialty or interest-based programs, allowing kids to explore new skills, discover passions and build confidence in different settings.
camps and care for a fun, flexible season
“The varied options we provide give families the opportunity to choose the combination which fits best with their child’s interests and with their schedule in a safe, fun environment.”
“More than anything, we’re excited about the variety of our programs this summer and all of the opportunities and options we can provide so that families get the most enjoyment and educational value out of them,” says Colin Rickman, director of communications and engagement for the St Vrain Valley School District.
The district offers a rich array of summer care options designed to meet the needs of families and keep students engaged and having fun throughout the summer months.
Through the Community Schools Summer Camps, families can access traditional full-day care with structured, staff-led activities, creative play, field trips and opportunities for social growth for children ages 3 to 12, with wraparound care for younger children and school-age camps at multiple elementary sites across the district.
In addition to this traditional daily care option, the district also features specialty half-day and themed camps, including hands-on
STEAM and innovation-focused experiences through the Innovation Center’s camps like SuperSTEM and Innovation Academy
There’s also the district’s Project Launch, a targeted summer learning initiative designed to extend the school year and give students a strong start before the next grade.
Project Launch provides small-group instruction in core areas like reading and math for elementary and middle school students, helping them solidify skills learned during the school year while having fun in a supportive, camp-like setting.
“The varied options we provide give families the opportunity to choose the combination which fits best with their child’s interests and with their schedule in a safe, fun environment,” explains Rickman.
When planning a summer schedule, families often have very different needs. Many households

require consistent, full-day care all summer long, while others have more flexibility to blend enrichment camps with time at home. Some families may choose to pair a morning specialty camp with afternoon care, while others intentionally leave lighter weeks or breaks between camps to allow for rest, family time or unstructured play. By mixing options thoughtfully and tuning into what works best for their child and household, parents can create a summer that meets everyone’s needs.
Andra Coberly Webster, spokesperson for YMCA of Northern Colorado and Camp Tumbleson, sees a lot of families who want unique options for their children. “We host specialty camps like sports camps, dance and outdoor camps, which give kids the
chance to dive into their interests in small groups,” she says. “At the same time, our day camps have hours built for working parents. We cover a full work day and provide children with a summer full of fun and adventure with varied activities like field trips, crafts, swimming and outdoor time.”
For families seeking deeper immersion, YMCA Camp Tumbleson Lake in the Rockies offers both day and overnight camp experiences, where campers ages 6 to 17 can build resilience, independence, and outdoor skills through classic camp activities like hiking, canoeing, archery and campfires.
With so many summer camp options available, parents can narrow choices by focusing on a few practical factors that
make the season more manageable for the whole family. “Proximity really tops my list of what to look for. Selecting camps close to home, work or a child’s school can simplify daily logistics and reduce family stress,” says Coberly Webster
Timing is equally important, as families may prioritize full-day programs that align with work schedules, half-day camps that pair well with flexible care, or shorter week-long sessions that fit around vacations.
Budget plays a key role, too. “Families should know up-front what the costs will be so they can rest assured that their child will have a fun, safe summer on a budget that works for the family,” says Coberly Webster.
Another valuable resource for
families navigating all the summer camp choices is a child’s teacher “Teachers know students’ learning styles, social needs and interests, and can often suggest camps that align well with a child’s strengths or areas for growth,” suggests Rickman.
With so many camp options available, families have the flexibility to craft a summer that truly fits their needs – whether that is full-time care for working parents to a carefully blended mix of specialty camps, traditional day camps, and unstructured downtime. The options ensure that every child can have a fun, engaging and balanced summer, while families can build a schedule that works for their household, lifestyle and priorities. | RR

Immersive Kids’ Party Options
How to elevate your kid’s birthday party with local ideas
SHELLEY WIDHALM
RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Going to a planetarium, butterfly pavilion or engaging in party entertainment like bubbles, face painting and balloon twisting are just a few ways to elevate a kid’s birthday party.
“I always say we’re going to have a stellar celebration for your birthday,” said MacKenzie Zurfluh, off-site education lead of the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado Boulder “We want you guys to have the best party you absolutely can, and we’re going to do everything to make that happen.”
The Fiske Planetarium offers five different prebuilt party packages that can be customized, plus an entirely customizable multiverse package. The packages have names like cometary, lunar, planetary, galaxy and universe, expanding accordingly in price, attendance number and location. Smaller parties of up to 20 can be hosted in the party room, and larger parties of up to 50 can be accommodated in the lobby. The multiverse package, on the other hand, allows 100 in the party
“These kids are coming in here. They are running around, exploring scientific, interactive exhibits and seeing their own show with friends and family,” Zurfluh said.
Packages include a set of activities for building and decorating telescopes, plus any additional crafts and games families want to add; families are also welcome to bring their own snacks. The packages are for one to two hours of party time, plus another 30 minutes in the dome for a laser show or a full-dome film, normally shown to the public but available for private viewing. The universe package adds on a 30-minute Flight through the Universe and Star Talk.
The films can be kid-friendly or scientific, covering topics like galaxies and black holes. The laser shows are designed and premade or created on site by University of Colorado students.
“You get to fly around the universe, listen to your favorite music, watch lasers, dance around and have fun,”
Zurfluh said. “It’s a unique place to be. To call it your own is super special. Not a lot of places do that.”
Face to Face Party Entertainment in Longmont offers an added attraction to the party host, offering activities such as cotton candy machines, face painting, balloon twisting, henna and glitter tattoos and bubble play. For the bubble play, there are bubble machines and bubble tubs filled with toys and bubbles for the kids to step into, plus
an assortment of yard games like hula hoops and obstacle courses.
“We bring the fun, that’s what we bring. We bring the excitement,” said Gina Patterson, owner of Face to Face. “They (the kids) love that we transform them from ordinary faces into butterflies, puppy dogs and superheroes.”
Kids can interact with butterflies and other invertebrates at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster at their
birthday parties.
“The Butterfly Pavilion is such a special place, we want to make sure we’re making learning fun,” said Jennifer Quermann, senior director of communications and marketing for the Butterfly Pavilion. “We find that when children learn about them earlier, as they grow older, they want to protect them.”
The Butterfly Pavilion offers three packages based on party size: parties of up to 30, 30 to 40 and 40 to 60, plus a self-guided option for a discounted group rate. The packages are for two hours, with an educational component and a special game or activity, all immersive and hands-on.
“They really enjoy getting up close with unique animals,” said Calais LeJeune, community engagement manager for the Butterfly Pavilion. “We have a ton of really engaging and incredible education.”
The two most popular packages are the butterfly package, which includes a special butterfly release at the Wings of the Tropics butterfly conservatory, and the slime package, focused on snails, slugs and other invertebrates, with a slime-making activity. The spiders and friends package includes up-close visits with arachnids and the creation of an arachnid game.
After the party, the kids are invited to spend the rest of the day touring the zoo’s interactive exhibits, including the butterflies, arthropods and aquatic and marine life – these types of animals make up more than 97% of all animal species on Earth.
“The Butterfly Pavilion introduces these animals in ways that feel approachable, fascinating and engaging for all ages,” Quermann said. “We are an invertebrate zoo, but we do so much more to conserve and protect these animals.”
Another immersive experience can be found at the Warrior Playground, a ninja warrior and obstacle fitness facility in Longmont. Birthday parties are customized based on the number of attendees and the choice of coach interaction or individual play. Parties last two hours, with 30 minutes in the party room for pizza and cake or whatever food is brought in, followed by 90 minutes on the floor The party

room has a capacity of up to 40 people, and the facility can accommodate up to 100.
“Almost everyone chooses to have a coach to show them how to use the obstacles,” said Claire Pearson, co-owner of the Warrior Playground. “The coach is the energy, enthusiasm and fun … keeping games structured.”
The older kids might want to master a specific skill, and the coach will break
down the techniques, since using the obstacles isn’t intuitive and requires different moves to master them, Pearson said.
“It is constant movement, running, jumping and swinging on stuff,” Pearson said. “They get to do those things here in a safe, structured environment. They can run around and use the equipment however their imagination wants them to.” | RR

How performing arts camps
WENDY MCMILLAN RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
It’s wisdom older than Yoda, reassuringly instilled by early childhood educators everywhere: failure is a terrific teacher
In other words, it’s OK to make mistakes – that’s how we learn What’s important is how we handle and grow from them.
In an age of curated social media perfection, however, risking rejection and perceived errors can be terrifying. Even bloopers reels tend to feel
build “rejection literacy” and much more
staged. Fortunately, there are plenty of thriving, welcoming, safe spaces that offer a contrasting perspective: rejection and obstacles aren’t dead ends but data points. To see for yourself, look no further than the performing arts.
You don’t have to make a longterm commitment to transformative performing arts experiences. Varied, local summer camps fit every style, passion, and person. We checked in with a few favorites for their insights on how performing arts camps help kids flip the script on risk, rejection and more – all while having fun.
Performing Arts supports kids to:
DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET
“There are few opportunities today that teach children the value of long-term goals, and it seems there is instant gratification everywhere they turn,” says Airborne Co-owner Laura Amaya. “Part of our mission at Airborne is to help children develop a growth mindset, a love of learning, and a strong sense of self in a fun, productive learning environment.”
Skill-building takes practice,
Amaya says, and practice means trying something again and again.“Mistakes are an opportunity to learn! Learning is fun; small improvements are celebrated – even falling and failing can be fun! Just keep at it!”
CULTIVATE SELF-CONFIDENCE AND PRESENCE
“The performing arts give students a chance to be fully present – to connect with themselves and others in a way that no screen can replace,”
“Mistakes
are an opportunity to learn! Learning is fun; small improvements are celebrated – even falling and failing can be fun! Just keep at it!”
says Moriah Sullivan, executive director of Centennial State Ballet. “Dance teaches students to listen to their bodies, work collaboratively, accept feedback and express themselves without filters or comparisons. These experiences foster confidence, emotional awareness and empathy –skills that are essential both onstage and in life.”
Naomi Railsback, a Longmont High School Senior and accomplished dancer, reflects fondly on the impact Centennial State Ballet Summer Camps and classes had on her personal journeys.
“I spent many summers at Centennial State Ballet’s summer camps and classes and can see that a huge portion of my growth as a dancer came from those experiences,” Railsback says. “Not only was it a space to grow relationships with fellow dancers, but I could also try new things and explore all kinds of new styles and techniques – because CSB fostered a community and space where I could do that without fear. Having those experiences really helped to grow my own confidence.”
BUILD EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE
As an embodied art form, dance has the power to grow confidence,

teach creative problem solving and strengthen communication skills, as well as foster community, says Laura Malpass, assistant school director of Boulder Ballet School.
“Dancers learn that healthy risktaking and failure are a natural part of learning – and life!” Malpass shares. “In growing our capacity to ‘fail forward’ or get comfortable with mistakes, hear feedback as an opportunity to progress, and develop the determination to keep trying, dancers foster a growth mindset, creative problem solving, and resilience; these skills are applicable far beyond the studio and stage!”
Best of all, the emotional resilience and grit that stem from “failing forward” in safe settings, such as performing arts camp, come couched in fun, from creative play to storytelling and collaboration. “Even though my daughter had never taken a dance class before, and despite her being quite shy, she absolutely adored this camp and can’t wait to do it again next year!” enthuses a parent of a Boulder Ballet Fantasy Adventure Camper. “They really made a welcoming and positive experience for her, and she had a ton of fun.”
EXPERIENCE RISK IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
“We intentionally create a studio environment where students feel safe to try, fail, and try again,” says Sandra Shih Parks, Artistic & Executive Director of Colorado Conservatory of Dance. “Mistakes are not something to fear – they’re an essential part of learning, resilience and self-confidence.”
The CCD teaching philosophy is grounded in creating a safe, healthy learning environment that supports both physical development and
social-emotional growth, Shih Parks says, rooted in the belief that students learn best when they feel supported, respected, and encouraged to take ageappropriate risks.
“Dance asks students to be seen, corrected and challenged, which can feel vulnerable. Our faculty are trained to guide students through that process with care, clarity and positive reinforcement.”
EMBRACE THEIR AUTHENTIC SELVES
As much as performing arts allow kids to try on, explore and empathize with various roles and identities, they also propel equally exciting motion: self-discovery and love.
Embracing the sense of place enhances [kids’] understanding of themselves and the world around them, writes theater teacher Fitz Turner on the Rocky Mountain Theater for Kids blog. In a world focused on survival, proving yourself, and concern for what other people think of us, Turner encourages you to do something to reconnect with your inner weirdo | RR

Wmudroom
Keeping your home clean after a day at camp
hen kids come home from camp, the dirt, dust, mud, grass and wet clothes come with them, making a mudroom the unsung hero of the household. Ideally, this space–not the kids’ bedrooms–is the landing pad
for backpacks, water bottles, shoes and smelly gear. Instead of tracking dirt down the hallway or piling soggy towels on the couch, everything has a place and cleanup goes faster.
A mudroom makeover, just in time for summer camp, starts from the ground up We reached out to local experts for some good advice on function and style for your family’s “drop zone. ”
Kelley McDonald, co-owner of McDonald Carpet One Floor & Home in Boulder (6367 Arapahoe Road), says that flooring is one of the easiest ways to update a mudroom and set the tone for the space. “Durable, waterresistant options like tile or luxury vinyl instantly refresh the look while standing up to mud, moisture and heavy traffic,” she explains. “Choosing a bold pattern, textured finish or wood-look
plank can add style without sacrificing performance, making the mudroom both practical and inviting.”
McDonald suggests that you begin any mudroom upgrade by thinking about how you actually use the space. More often than not, it’s used for shoes, coats, bags, pets or sports gear. “Build in closed storage to hide the mess, and pair it with durable, easy-clean materials like tile or luxury vinyl on the
Decora Cabinets. (Photo courtesy: Budget Home Supply)
Cabinet designers often refer to mudrooms as “drop zones,” and they truly are the best friend to a home’s living room and kitchen. Without an effective drop zone, everyday items tend to clutter the couch or the kitchen island. - Vernetta Angelo
floor and washable paint or paneling on the walls,” she says. “A great mudroom balances function first, style second.”
Vernetta Angelo, marketing and advertising director at Budget Home Supply in Longmont (780 Boston Ave.), likes bins and benches for decluttering. “When creating or upgrading a mudroom, I recommend benches for easy shoe access; adding a hinge to the seat allows for additional storage below. Imagine how much cleaner the floors would stay if shoes were removed the moment someone entered the home. Open shelves are a great place for hats, while hooks are essential for jackets. While some prefer a ‘locker’ look to hide items, an organized open area can be just as attractive if it keeps the rest of the home clutter-free. Bins are another excellent organizational tool–labeling them for specific needs like sports gear
helps ensure important items don’t get lost.
“Another feature I always suggest is installing outlets within open shelving for phones and tablets. When homework is finished, placing a device on its charger next to a hanging backpack ensures it is fully charged and ready to go the next morning.”
Ultimately, a mudroom upgrade isn’t just a practical task – it’s a small investment that pays off in everyday sanity, especially during the chaos of summer When kids burst through the door with stories from camp and evidence of a full day outdoors, a great mudroom keeps the focus on the memories instead of the mess. By creating smart boundaries between outside adventures and indoor comfort, the mudroom helps families stay ready for whatever the next day brings. | RR
MUDROOM MANDATE
• Choose materials that can handle real life. From shelves and bins to flooring and rugs, everything in a mudroom should be durable, lowmaintenance, and tough enough to withstand frequent cleaning without showing wear.
• Maximize storage wherever possible. Consider how much gear each family member brings home – backpacks, shoes, sports equipment, and extras – and plan accordingly
• Storage only works if it’s simple and convenient to use, so focus on layouts and solutions that are intuitive, efficient and easy for everyone in the household to access
FUN! SUMMER
LINDA THORSEN BOND RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Want to communicate with your kids? Try tossing in a couple of these words: spineless superheroes, kiva, scrums, ninjas, slide and square, and pinching, coiling and slab building. Maybe even toss in a little Spanish like Dia de los Niños.
Now you’re talking! That’s the lingo of summer fun for kids in Boulder County/Northern Colorado There are so many opportunities for kids to explore the world around them, and they’ll be excited that you’re speaking their language.
7
fun ways to keep your kids busy this summer
These activities are right near home.
WARRIOR PLAYGROUND
Claire Pearson, Warrior Playground’s marketing and operations manager, talked about the value of summer camps and open play
She said, “Summer is an especially powerful time for ninja camps and open play because kids are finally free to move, explore and play in ways that often get limited during the school year. From a physical standpoint, children benefit from longer, unstructured movement sessions that build strength, coordination, agility and confidence. Ninja-style activities naturally develop upper- and lower-body strength, balance, grip and problem-solving – without kids feeling like they’re “working out.” They’re just playing, climbing, swinging and challenging themselves.
Equally important are the social and emotional benefits. Summer programs give kids a chance to practice cooperation, resilience and creativity in a low-pressure environment. They learn how to try hard things, fall safely, try again, and celebrate effort rather than perfection. For many kids, that sense of mastery and confidence carries into school, sports and everyday life.
Open play hours are especially valuable because they allow children
to Aug. 7, with sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and 1to 4 p.m. There are also options for full days available. Registration opens on Feb. 2 at 8 a.m. and ends at the start of each camp or when camps fill. The cost is $250-$400-plus.
BUTTERFLY PAVILLION
Oksanna Wildrick, Butterfly Pavilion’s senior program manager, has been enchanted with the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster since her first visit. Like many children, she hadn’t had a great deal of outdoor experience. She said, “When children are in class all day, they can lose their sense of wonder about the natural world. Here, they learn, explore, and develop a deeper sense of how complex the outdoors is. They learn simple things – like the beauty of the butterflies. They may develop empathy and see how even the cockroach has a place in the world.”
There are 20 different week-long camps on the website for children ages 5 to 9, including Unlikely Friends, Bug Olympics, Junior Zookeepers, Aquatic Adventures, Powerful Pollinators, Spineless Superheroes and Creatures, and Myths and Legends.
to follow their own curiosity. When kids choose how they move and what challenges they take on, they build autonomy, self-trust, and intrinsic motivation – skills that support lifelong physical activity and mental well-being.
In a time when kids are spending more hours on screens than ever, summer movement experiences like ninja camps provide a joyful, embodied alternative that supports whole-child development: physical strength, emotional resilience and social connection.”
GROUNDWORKS ART LAB
There are three locations in Boulder offering exciting Groundworks arts activities for children ages 6 to 16. According to Grace Flaherty, program and marketing coordinator, “Students explore hands-on summer art camps for artsy and not-so artsy kiddos across five studio mediums: clay, metal, wood, print and glass. It’s perfect for curious kids eager to learn something new. Our art forms are studio arts that teach a variety of technical skills. We work with kids who are less artsy to build technical real-world skills and artsier kids to push their artistic limits by adding new mediums to their portfolios.”
No previous experience is required. Classes meet weekly from May 26
Coming soon is Dia de los Niños, a full day of activities for kids and their families featuring arts, dancing, and music. It’s a very special family event in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center, supported by the Innovation and Collaboration Grant from The Collaborative of the SCFD –a nonprofit membership organization comprised of SCFD-funded arts, culture, and science nonprofits.
THE KIVA CENTER
Kasey Schelling, executive director of the Kiva Center, said, “During the formative years, children thrive through embodied, social learning- gaining skills by doing, experimenting and making discoveries that can’t happen in a classroom. At The Kiva Center, we offer opportunities that go beyond the school day by immersing kids in authentic, hands-on experiences in a wild, screen-free environment.
At our programs, children learn to take meaningful risks and build confidence as they discover what they’re truly capable of Whether they’re learning how to safely use knives to carve and craft wood, collaborating to create a makeshift raft, or digging into the earth to find and work with raw clay, kids are developing problem-solving skills, resilience and creativity in deeply engaging ways. Most importantly, our programs foster a sense of belonging to themselves, to one another, and to the natural world. Through time spent outdoors in all elements, children reconnect with the land, gaining a felt understanding of where we come from and how we are interconnected with all of life.”

Programs offer a series of focused, hands-on programs for children and teens ages 5 to 13 from June 15 to July 31. Each program centers on developing a specific skill through outdoor, experiential learning – inviting participants to build confidence, curiosity, and meaningful connections with peers. From creative and practical skill-building to water-based exploration and nature immersion, each week offers a distinct experience that supports growth, independence and joy throughout the summer
Programs take place on beautiful private land at the base of Lefthand Canyon, just outside of Boulder and nearby communities. This expansive landscape includes rock formations, forested areas, and access to Lefthand Creek, providing a dynamic and inspiring setting for learning and exploration. The land itself becomes a teacher – supporting hands-on practice, focused skill development, and a deepening relationship with the natural world. There are three- and five-day programs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The cost is $265-$425, and limited scholarships are available
MILE HIGH ROWING CLUB
Mile High Rowing Club operates at the Boulder Reservoir on the south shore near Sailor’s Point. A Boulder Reservoir Annual Pass or Day Pass is required for entrance
“Rowing in Colorado is a unique experience. But despite our limited time on the water due to Colorado’s variable seasons and unpredictable weather, our hard work continues to pay off. It keeps us competitive with teams across the United States. Our humble beginnings with only a handful of old rowing shells on the Cherry Creek Reservoir and the Boulder Reservoir remind us that our community is what sustains us. Our combined hard work and sense of community have allowed the team to evolve and grow to have a fleet of shells and training equipment in two locations that can accommodate our unique position as a rowing team that spans the state of Colorado,” states Mile High Rowing on its website.
The most popular class, Learn to Row, runs from June to August. Multiple sessions are offered
throughout the summer at the Boulder Reservoir and Cherry Creek Reservoir

Summer Preparation for School in the Fall
COURTNEY JOHNSON
RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Pencils are labeled, new clothes are hung in the closet and backpacks are on hooks by the door. You may have bought everything on the supply list, but are you and your kids emotionally ready to tackle the new school year?
Transitioning from summer to fall can be a daunting task. Having school readiness can make this yearly ritual easier for everyone. Go from tears and complaints to smiles and laughs with this roadmap for both parents and students to make the adjustment easier when the school bell rings in August.
BE SOCIAL
Maybe you’re moving to a new school, preparing for the transition to middle school or high school or even sending your little one(s) off to school for the first time. Planning playdates and participating in camps and clubs with classmates can keep a connection over the summer. “Many of our students are involved in off-season athletic training, this helps keep them connected with
classmates and familiar with the school, so the transition back to classes in August is more natural,” said Mike D. Gabriel, president, Holy Family High School.
For preschool-age learners, enrolling in classes and activities helps with concepts of sharing, taking turns and making friends. Set up your own meetup (Facebook groups are great for this) to get to know some families over the summer if you are new to the school or want to build friendships. Don’t skip out on the back-to-school events like Meet the Teacher or a Back to School Carnival. Familiar faces can go a long way to helping the nerves of a new year.
DO A DRY RUN
From picking out clothes the night before to packing up the backpack the morning of, doing a dry run can help take away some of the anxiety of starting fresh. Kai Miller, teacher and owner of Lavender Hill Preschool, recommends some role play at home to practice evening and morning routines. Even syncing snack and lunch times to school schedules as the first day
approaches can be beneficial for the transition. “Predictable rituals signal to a child’s brain that the world is safe and orderly,” she said. “When children know what to expect, their brains
exhale, freeing up cognitive energy for exploration and learning rather than constantly scanning for uncertainty.”
Miller also recommends visiting the school before the first day. “Walk by the school or play on the playground if permitted to build positive, familiar associations with the physical space,” she said.
GET BACK INTO A ROUTINE
It’s easy to let that bedtime slip over the summer months. Nightly routines of a bath or shower, reading a book and lights out by 9 tend to go away in the summer. Even easier is letting go of getting up by a certain time and other morning rituals. “Start adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times in 15-minute increments about 10 to 14 days before school begins,” said Miller If transitions are hard, take those last days of summer break to slow down. Schedule those vacations and high intensity activities like Water World to happen before the days leading up to the start of school. “Avoid overscheduling the week before school starts,” said Miller. “Creating space for quiet, unstructured time acts as a bridge from the freedom of summer to the structure of the school year.”
HAVE CONVERSATIONS
Help the transition back by having conversations about the new year Tackle topics from first day expectations to teacher changes and goals socially and academically. “For my kids, conversations about the upcoming

school year – what they were excited for and what might be challenging – helped them get mentally prepared,” said Gabriel.
Show your excitement for your children reaching new goals and starting a new adventure in whatever grade they are going into. “Children often mirror their parents’ emotions,” said Miller
KEEP LEARNING OVER THE SUMMER
Support keeping the mind sharp
over the break with educational opportunities that can be found all around the Front Range from summer camp classes at the St. Vrain Innovation Center to taking trips to the Colorado History Museum. Local libraries and businesses even offer incentives and prizes for reading through the off months. “Keeping kids intellectually stimulated over the summer, even in small ways, helps them start the school year confident,” said Gabriel.
“At Holy Family, all students have
summer reading requirements, which keeps their minds sharp and ensures they’re prepared on Day 1.”
MAKE THOSE APPOINTMENTS EARLY
Don’t wait till the last minute and beat the summer rush for that dentist appointment, selfcarry paperwork for meds and sports physicals. Spreading out appointments throughout the summer can help take some of the stress of parents and anxiety that
can come with multiple visits for shots, teeth cleanings and more.
These easy to implement steps can help students start the school year off on the right foot with confidence. “Starting the year on the right foot can set the tone for everything to come,” said Gabriel. “When students feel prepared, stress decreases for both them and their parents. A strong start can build confidence that carries them throughout the entire year.” | RR
