This year’s Dine Out With Heart event, organized by Loveland Philo (short for Philomatheon Club), is a chance to sample some of the top food trucks from the northern Colorado area. The event, slated to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 at the Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson in Loveland, will feature games, family activities, prizes and live tunes from the Wendy Woo Band, a Colorado musical institution. The event has all the makings of a “me”-centered afternoon on the town: sumptuous food, live entertainment and the chance to mingle with friends and family at a place that specializes in one of America’s signature vehicles, the Harley Davidson motorcycle. The Dine Out With Heart event is about more than good food, good tunes and impressive bikes, however. The annual event has a noble mission at its heart: to ensure that everyone in the community around Loveland has enough to eat. “Each year, Loveland Philo partners with local businesses for Dine Out With Heart, a community fundraiser aimed at reducing hunger and food insecurity in Northern Colorado,” Loveland Philo member Jamie Dawn said in a release. “This year we’re partnering with Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson and LN2 Food Truck Events to host the event as a Food Truck Rally!”

All of these partners will work to create an event that summons all the fun, spirit and community of a neighborhood barbecue. A group of “gourmet food trucks” will offer attendees culinary styles that run the range from barbecue to burgers to tacos. Wendy Woo will bring her signature sound that blends folk, rock and blues to an intimate stage. Families will find booths from local businesses, as well as games and activities to occupy every age range and interest. All attendees will have the chance to enter for prizes.
The suggested donation for attending the event is $25 that will go toward nonprofits in the Loveland and Berthoud area dedicated to eliminating food insecurity, especially among children, a mission that’s all the more critical in a time where the cost of basic nutrition items continues to rise. The effort to secure the health, happiness and basic needs of the Loveland community has been at the heart of Philo since its founding in 1918 by high school students. “The club was organized as a way for young women to come together in friendship and service to the community,” Philo officials explain on their website. “Today, over 100 years later, these goals remain.” For the Food Truck Rally, other partners are adding their own efforts and resources to the mission to feed the community. This year’s team behind Dine Out With Heart includes agricultural company Nutrien, High Country Beverage, LN2 Food Truck Events and Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson. 8 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
What’s more, the Harley Davidson Thunder Mountain folks will give attendees the chance to experience the thrill of riding on one of America’s most famous vehicular exports. The Jumpstart Rider Experience gives riders with no experience on a motorcycle the chance to feel what it’s like to hop on a Harley. The Jumpstart “rider experience stand” features a top-notch Harley set in a specially designed stand – new riders can “hop in the saddle, set their boots on the foot pegs and fire up the engine,” all in a safe setting. It makes for an event that, on its surface, may feel selfindulgent, but in fact supports an important cause. She often sets up the events at Fossil Creek Park or Spring Canyon Park but doesn’t mind at all if the customer has another location in mind, such as their own backyard. Foothills Picnics does not bring the food and drink. However, many vendors give a 10 percent discount on food orders booked through the company. She knows the regulations for city or county venues and helps potential picnickers know what they can and can’t do. A basic picnic for two starts at $159. For 15 people, the biggest group she’ll book, the price is $699. Of course, the add-ons change the price. Her life partner Evan Carlson coded the Foothills Picnics website from scratch and has helped make the booking process painless. Brianna said, “The customer gets the booking confirmation through email and picks the details such as the color of the napkins and table runner. The day before the picnic I text and go to the venue and make sure the weather is okay. An hour before the start I send a Google location pin so they will know exactly where it is. leave. They chose how long they want to stay, and I come back to clean up once they’re done. It’s a stress-free experience.” A new twist is slumber parties. “It’s the same concept,” Brianna said. “We customize the theme such as unicorn or gamer. We set up at their house, put up teepee tents and air mattresses. We can partner with Pinots Palette to bring painting kits and easels that I set up. We can do balloons or custom water bottles, whatever the customer wants. We have done slumber parties for eight children but can accommodate more if we need.” After nine years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Brianna is budget-minded and offers “the most affordable picnic service in the area.” The company serves Fort Collins and the surrounding area and has even gone to the Denver area to set up a picnic. “Of course,” she adds, “there’s a travel fee for that.” Brianna added, “Booking a picnic or slumber party with us is super easy! Our booking system isn’t inquiry-based so you can book, then show up and there are no intermediary steps. We also do not require a deposit or charge anything until after their picnic or slumber party is over.”

The Greeley Stampede will celebrate its 100th year June 24 to July 4 as it brings together the usual fair activities of competitions, concerts and carnival rides, along with a list of new offerings that expand every area of the event. 14 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
A new stage will be unveiled this year, Civitas Park Music Stage, and larger names will be added to the performance lineup with more artists than in previous years. The food court will have the addition of rotating food trucks. And there will be new specialty events, like Hover Board Barrel Racing, the Corn Hole Tournament and the LEGO Creation Festival. Some old favorites will remain, such as the Kids Korral, Petting Zoo, Pedal Tractors, Sheep Stampede, Sea Lion Splash and Great American Duck Race. fireworks show, and the carnival midway. “We are trying to increase the experience without increasing the cost,” McFarling said, adding that the concerts are included in the admission price with the carnival bearing an extra fee. “You can come out for a very inexpensive day and really enjoy being at the stampede, which is important for the community. … There’s really something for everyone.”

KORN FERRY TOUR/ THE ASCENDANT PRESENTED BY BLUE JUNE 28-JULY 3
Another big event for Northern Colorado is the Korn Ferry TOUR’s The Ascendant at TPC Colorado June 28 to July 3. TPC Colorado in Berthoud is one of 26 Korn Ferry competitions. Korn Ferry is the developmental tour for professional golfers who have not reached the PGA TOUR or failed to win enough FedEx Cup points to remain on tour. The TOUR changed its name this year from TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes to The Ascendant presented by Blue to mark a new sponsorship with Ascendant National Title through 2026. Gates open June 28-29 for practice rounds with the rest of the week dedicated to the competition.

“Tuesday and Wednesday is an opportunity for autographs. It’s a more relaxed atmosphere,” said Drew Blass, tournament director for Ascendant presented by Blue. “Thursday to Saturday golfers are going out there to secure their PGA TOUR cards.” This year, 156 professional golfers will compete in the 72hole tournament that includes the longest hole at the 13th hole’s 773-yard par-5. The top 65 golfers and ties will compete July 2-3 and the champion will be determined July 3.
GREELEY ARTS PICNIC
The 43rd annual Greeley Arts Picnic is another art show but with a picnic included, as well as arts and crafts activities and band performances. The picnic will be July 30-31 at Lincoln Park in downtown Greeley—each year, it generates an attendance of 20,000 people.
Both days there will be 14 Colorado performers with a kick-off concert presented by Funkiphino on July 30 at the downtown plaza. The kick-off concert will be held in conjunction with the Downtown Development Authority’s Friday Fest, where bands perform through the summer to attract visitors downtown.
“It’s an opportunity to see the world’s best golfers before everybody gets to see the world’s best golfers,” Blass said.
“It meshes the two events together,” said Andrea Haring, special events coordinator for the city of Greeley Culture, Parks and Recreation Department, which sponsors and hosts the Friday band for Friday Fest. “The Arts Picnic strives to bring a variety of local bands and makes every effort to ensure there is a good mix offered sure to please all.”
The TOUR invites the public to play with future PGA professionals through Pro Americana, which requires a fee. There also is a junior clinic for youth to learn from the pros and opportunities for the public to get signatures and ask questions, as well as public viewing decks, a birdie ball interactive area and kids activities.
Bands and music performers will alternate performances at the main center and plaza stages. Artists and crafters will sell paintings, sculpture, pottery, soap, garden art and gourmet food at 151 vendor booths. And there will be a variety of food booths serving up ethnic foods and a beer garden under two tents across the main center stage.
“It’s some great golf, great weather, and TPC is an amazing setting for the tour,” Blass said.
“There’s something for everyone at the arts picnic,” Haring said. “It’s just one big party.”
Admission is free for those 15 and under and who have served in the military. Ticket sales and registration are open at theascendant.com.

The Larimer County Fair and PRCA Rodeo has a new theme this year, Cowboy Boots & Country Roots, to highlight its homegrown activities during the free event Aug. 5-9. New this year will be the Axe Women Loggers of Maine, a lumberjills sportswomen’s show, as well as a community stage for dance troupes, martial artists and other performers to present their local acts during the day.

Free concerts will take the stage in the evening. “This year is our first attempt to get back to normal,” said John Rozak, director of marketing for the Larimer County Fair. “We are highlighting community involvement and community engagement, tr ying to get people out tr ying to enjoy the events.” As in past years, the Larimer County Fair’s offerings will include the 4-H and open class competitions, the junior livestock sale, the fair parade and a long list of entertainment options like a pancake breakfast, a craft beer tent, food vendors, Noah’s Ark Petting Zoo and Pony Rides, and acts like Globe of Death trick riding on motorcycles and Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel. There also will be fireworks shows the evenings of Aug. 5 and 6. The carnival, Carnival Americana, requires an admission fee to be able to ride the rides and play the carnival games. “We’re developing the fair to engage more and a different demographic,” Rozak said. “It’s fun for ever yone. … It’s a little smaller fair but it’s something people enjoy.” — treventscomplex.com/events/larimer-county-fair
Art in the Park and Sculpture in the Park, held over the same weekend in Loveland, are outdoor artisan exhibitions and sales that give artists an opportunity to showcase their work and the public to meet the artists.
This year, Art in the Park, sponsored by the Thompson Valley Art League and the Lincoln Gallery, will be Aug. 13-14 at North Lake Park. The state’s longest running artisan festival, it serves as the largest fundraiser for the art league and is in its 57th year this year. More than 175 juried artisans will show their fine arts and crafts, including paintings, pottery, jewelry, woodworking, weaving, food, beverages and clothing. Most of the artisans come from the Colorado region. “It’s a one-stop shop for art. Especially with all three shows going, it’s a full art weekend in Loveland,” said Jill Atchison, event director of Art in the Park, referring also to Sculpture in the Park and the Loveland Fine Art Invitational. “This year is bigger and better. … There will be some repeating artists and also there a lot of new artists joining us this year.” — artintheparkloveland.com Sculpture in the Park is in its 38th year and will be held Aug. 12-14 in Benson Sculpture Garden with a patron party Aug. 12 and a public viewing and sale Aug. 13-14. The largest outdoor juried show and sale in the United States, it is presented by the Loveland High Plains Arts Council to promote sculptural arts, and it draws more than 15,000 people each year. This year, 160 artists will show and sell their art, includ-

GARDEN AND ART TOUR BY KATIE FEINDEL for Northern Colorado Life
This year there is a theme of sustainability in both the art and gardens. Eight artists’ works will be on display as guests walk through the gardens. Unlike featuring them in a storefront fashion, the art will be included organically in the gardens to give people an idea of how it can be incorporated into their own landscaping. They are the only garden tour in the community that displays art in this way. Their goal is to find different ways to inspire people through the variety of gardens they choose every year. Dawn Kirk, is the Event Coordinator for this year’s event and last year was her first year organizing the tour. Though she has only been organizing the event for a short time, she loves it

his year the Loveland Garden and Art Tour is celebrating its 18th year of promoting Loveland’s appreciation for beauty and this year, sustainability.
This year the event will be based out of High Plains Environmental Center, which has approximately six kinds of demonstration gardens, which focus on native plants, conservation, and the relationship between landscape and wildlife. Wander through the HPEC grounds before beginning the tour, held in the surrounding High Plains neighborhood. 22 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
“When we look at where to host, we first look at nominations and find more homes in that area...this year is different as High Plains is a newer neighborhood with less mature gardens so the focus this year is on sustainability...Our goal is to try different ways to inspire people through the variety of gardens we choose every year. Historically speaking, we want to bring people inspirational gardens and art. I love the idea that were aligning the event theme with one of Loveland’s gardeners’ mission of sustainability. I love the idea that we are presenting concepts we’ve never presented before,” Kirk said. The event is hosted by Loveland Youth Gardeners. Loveland Youth Gardeners provides summer programming, and the staff and volunteers teach job skills and horticulture skills, and the youth can get credit for school. The long-running Loveland Garden and Art Tour is Loveland Youth Gardeners’ main annual fundraising effort to fund this programming for at-risk youth. Their efforts to better the lives of these at-risk youth go a long way with the community’s generous participation in the Loveland Garden and Art Tour. NORTHERNCOLORADOLIFE.COM
Putting on a fundraiser like the Loveland Garden and Art Tour is a big task. Dawn Kirk fills a large role in making it happen, but she doesn’t do it all alone. Loveland Youth Gardeners has a staff of four and a wealth of volunteers. “It is a small but mighty team...That’s the beautiful thing about doing the event so long, we get people emailing us asking to volunteer every year. We need volunteers and especially committee members for next year but for this year, we’re set,” Kirk said. For example: Gabby Lopez is one of Loveland Youth Gardeners’ newest, valued volunteers and has played a huge role in getting this year’s event ready. And, the artist liaison, Lindsay Cantlay, is returning this year and has been on the committee for over a decade. This year’s event is like no other and will present amazing ideas for sustainability and pollination growth, not to mention the fantastic art, all incorporated into the gorgeous and unique display gardens. The 2022 Loveland Garden and Art Tour will be held on June 18 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. and tickets are on sale on Eventbrite where you can get a hardcopy ticket booklet. You can also buy tickets on the day of the event.

No matter which event you attend, the Foundry’s casual atmosphere caters to people with picnic baskets and camp chairs to those seeking a patio dining experience, said Sean Hawkins, executive director with Loveland Downtown District. “It’s the second time doing this event and it’s a kickoff to summer and an exploration of what downtown has to offer,” Hawkins said. Expect local brewers like Verboten Brewing, Loveland Ale Works, Crow Hop Brewing, Big Thompson Brewing, and OBC Wine Project, at this event--and throughout the summer, Hawkins said. Additional events at the Foundry Plaza continue with Blues Nights on Fridays-- June 26, July 29 and August 26. Also check the lineup for Wednesday night concerts to see who’s playing. The final event that bids farewell to summer—Fall into Blues, scheduled for September 10. National headliners Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal will close out the summer series, Hawkins said. “They play all over the world and are based out of Lincoln, Nebraska.” Check the website for entire lineup of free events and kidfriendly programs that One Sweet Summer has to offer, like the Frozen Ice Cream Festival, fitness classes and Kids on the Plaza.

RIALTO THEATER MAKES A SPLASH WITH LOVELAND SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
Intimate and charming--two words that come to mind when describing the Foote Lagoon Amphitheater. And who can beat the price when the Rialto offers its free summer concert series? This year free concerts span four Thursdays in July--from July 6-28. This hidden gem venue is a crowd pleaser indeed –thanks to historic preservation efforts—and unexpected stage location. “Having the stage in the water is a cool feature, it feels very summery—the lagoon is blue green water—so its topical and summery,” says Mikayla Adair, marketing coordinator. Guests generally start arriving around 5:30 p.m. to re-

serve stadium style seats. The rest of the crowd hunkers down on the ground with blankets or camp chairs, Adair said. And because of its circular design with grass on both sides, there’s not a bad seat in the house, she added. “Having the concrete pad in the middle of the lagoon gives it a 360-concert appearance.” Event-goers can grab good eats provided by local food trucks—taste what’s on tap in the beer garden—and get silly with plenty of kids’ activities. PLANET BLUEGRASS CELEBRATES ROCKYGRASS 50TH ANNIVERSARY CLOSES THE SEASON WITH ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOLKS FESTIVAL
Festival season in the Rockies is a one-of-a-kind experience. This year the iconic RockyGrass festival celebrates its 50th anniversary--July 29-31. Located at Planet Bluegrass Ranch, in Lyons, CO. Bluegrass legends like Yonder Mountain String Band, Sam Bush and Punch Brothers are a few national headers scheduled to take the stage. Plus, Hot Rize makes an appearance on the last day. Another festy fave, Rocky Mountain Folks Festival--which brings festival season to a close August 12-14. National headliners include Bruce Hornsby, Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco. Plus, two up and comers to watch for: Tall Tall Trees and Chatham Rabbits, said Grace Barrett, director of communications and partnerships, with Planet Bluegrass. BOHEMIAN NIGHTS THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE Thursday nights are about to give Old Town Square a makeover. That’s because Bohemian Nights, a Fort Collins fave is back in the Square with Thursday Night Live concerts. Last year the event was held at New Belgium Brewing. Each week unique band pairings will take the stage so the crowd can relax or hop to the dance floor. What is your most popular dish? Our gourmet burgers—they are made fresh and cooked to order with a variety of toppings that will appeal to the burger connoisseur. Our most basic is the half-pound Foundry Burger with cheese, but for a spicy kick, we have the Volcano Burger with our housemade hot sauce. With options like the Mushroom Swiss Burger, Good Morning Burger served with a fried egg and the Cowboy Burger smothered with barbeque sauce, provolone and topped with onion rings, we definitely have a burger that will satisfy everyone.

he smell of barbecue is in the air, the sun is shining,
and the pool is open: 4th of July is just around the corner. Independence Day celebrations this year are much anticipated, as the last two summers have been far from normal. While the pandemic continues to require some diligence and care from the public, normal life has mostly resumed and this year’s favorite summer holiday is sure to offer up plentiful fun, sun, and festivities across our region. Check out these exciting, local 4th of July celebrations.

LOVELAND The City of Loveland Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce the return of the City’s July Fourth Festival at North Lake Park this summer. Programmed activities will occur throughout the afternoon, starting at 3 p.m. and ending with a fireworks show over Lake Loveland around 9 p.m. JUNE 2022
“I have had several people call me or ask me if the event was going to ever return to North Lake or plead with me to bring it back to the lake,” says Kerry Helke, senior recreation coordinator with the Parks and Recreation Department. “They would tell me about family traditions that included attending the event, or how they plan their family reunions around it or other reasons why the fireworks at North Lake are important to them. It is very touching to learn how much this event has impacted the community and become so important to the residents. After two challenging years, we know our community is looking forward to joining together for a celebration of independence and community.”
The day’s activities will include live music, a beer garden, the kids play zone, the Children’s Bike Parade with prizes for best costumes, a 32-team cornhole tournament with cash prizes, and many vendors of food and goods. The anticipation of this year’s returning event means large crowds are likely, so consider using rideshare apps like Uber – there will be designated drop-off and pick-up locations on 29th Street. The Kids Zone Play Area and vendor booths will be in the west parking lot near the playground and will include the Parks & Recreation Mobile Recreation Trailer, giant building blocks from Everblock, a NERF Battle Arena, and the Buckhorn Train operated by the Lions Club. The music line-up will include Wood Belly, Creole Stomp, and Loveland Concert Band as the final performance. Boaters can be on the water until 8 p.m. The North Section of the Windsor Lake Trail will be closed at 8:30 p.m. to prepare for the fireworks show. The band will perform at the Boardwalk Park Bandshell and the best place to catch the fireworks is from Boardwalk Park. “This event is a staple of Windsor’s community feel,” says Lexie Spykstra, recreation coordinator for the Town of Windsor. “It has been a longstanding tradition that brings the community together for a celebration of our nation’s independence. TOWN OF WINDSOR
The Town of Windsor will celebrate the 4th of July with live music presented by the 101st Army Band starting at 5:30 p.m. and running until the fireworks show begins around 9:20 p.m. Windsor Lake is open for non-motorized boating on July 4, and there will be boat rentals from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 48 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE

Fort Collins will host its community celebration of Independence Day on July 2 this year, allowing visitors to draw out their week of summer fun. The festivities will take place at City Park and will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with the NORTHERNCOLORADOLIFE.COM

The Independence Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. and the day will also include baseball games, special hours at the City Park Pool, trolley rides, live music, and a food truck rally. BY DARREN THORNBERRY for Northern Colorado Life Planet Bluegrass is a major influencer in shaping the music and festival scene in Colorado with their long-standing series of free-spirited multiday festivals; Telluride Bluegrass, RockyGrass and Rocky Mountain Folks Festival. RockyGrass turns an impressive 50 years old this year. We spoke with Grace Barrett, Director of Communication and Partnerships at Planet Bluegrass about what it’s like to be so deeply rooted in music and the Colorado community for as long a Planet Bluegrass has.
Reflecting on 50 years of RockyGrass, has bluegrass changed over the years? Bluegrass has definitely changed a lot since the inception of RockyGrass 50 years ago. You’ve had people like Sam Bush and Bela Fleck come and completely turn everyone’s idea of bluegrass on its head. Where Telluride embraces the newgrass and genre bending, RockyGrass has remained at its heart a trad festival throughout it all. 50 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE

Is Colorado oversaturated with festivals? I don’t think so! There are certainly a lot more festivals now than there were when RockyGrass started, but I think it speaks to people’s interest and love for that style of music viewing and all that comes with it (in our case, tubing).
What is challenging about producing live music and how do you meet that challenge? Nothing is certain. There comes a point when the festival will

happen no matter what—it’s our job to put out any fires along the way. It requires a lot of adaptability and good communication amongst team members.
How is RockyGrass honoring its 50th anniversary this year? We’ve been doing a deep dive archive project of all the content we have over the last 50 years— posters, newsletters, video, audio, etc. We’re planning some special workshops and viewings. Almost like a RockyGrass museum.
Can you say a few words about your team? I feel so lucky to work with this team. We’re small and mighty. There’s 10 of us, and we get everything done with a laugh and our office dogs by our sides sides. Everyone is incredibly supportive, kind, and able to ask for help because we’re all navigating this new normal together. It’s the best kind of working environment.
What role does music education play in your work? A huge one! This industry is constantly shifting; it’s important to stay abreast to changes so we can adapt. We’re also constantly searching out new music so we can continue to bring our Festivarians top tier performers. There’s so much to be learned from music. 52 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
What hat do you love about your work and why? I love how creative I get to be. We have a very poetic and imaginative voice, and I enjoy writing copy and expressing the company in that way. I’m constantly meeting new people and bringing the joy of live music to others. I don’t think it gets better than that.
What else do you want people to know about this year’s RockyGrass festival? The emphasis of this year’s RockyGrass is community. There have been so many changes over the last 50 years, and, above all, we want to celebrate this community that has kept everything moving forward. Through floods, fires, and pandemics. We are so grateful.

EXPERIENCE COLORADO HISTORY this summer in Windsor

The Windsor History Museum and the adjacent Art & Heritage Center are kicking off summer with one of their most popular family events, Little Tea on the Prairie, on June 4 from 10 a.m. to noon. Guests are invited to dress in their “best prairie clothes and come explore our museum buildings, from the old schoolhouse to the farmhouse, beet shack and train depot,” said Katherine Mercier, museum education coordinator. The pioneer-themed tea will feature interactive art, including decorating a teacup to bake and dry at home, creating a paper star banner and fashioning a rag doll. The paper banner and the rag doll are inspired by crafts Laura
Ingalls Wilder makes in her Little House on the Prairie book series. Mercier will lead children in games from the 1800s, and families can dance to the music of an old-timemusic player. Children will be able to participate in hands-on activities, such as learning to write in 1800s-style cursive, in each historic museum building.

Is Coming To Northern Colorado BY JOHN TEEHAN for Northern Colorado Life With winter behind us and the summer months ahead, there are a lot of great reasons to get out of the house and enjoy the company of fellow northern Colorado residents and visitors. One of the best reasons is the variety of events associated with this year’s celebration of LGBT+ Pride. Towns and cities across northern Colorado will be holding special events over the next couple of months to recognize the tremendous contributions of members of the LGBT+ community and celebrate freedom and identity. Many events will feature a wealth of family-friendly activities, entertainment, food, and parades. The past couple of years has been challenging for many in-person events due to Covid-19. Thankfully, high vaccination rates across the state coupled with significantly lower numbers of reported infections since January mean that many public events are returning cautiously to prepandemic conditions. This is allowing Pride festivities to return to the streets of northern Colorado.
OUR LGBT+ COMMUNITY AND HISTORY
Almost 5% of the population of Colorado identifies as LGBT+, and they come from all walks of life, representing every racial and ethnic category, religious, political, and cultural background. 58 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
Recent years have seen a lot of advancement for the LGBT+ community in Colorado. In 2007, LGBT+ people gained the right to adopt children, and the Colorado Employment Nondiscrimination Act extended protections for sexual orientation and gender status. Soon after, the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act gave protection in housing and public accommodation for LGBT+ residents and banned conversion therapy for minors. A few years later, in 2013, the Colorado Civil Union Act passed, during which the first civil union licenses were issued. A year later, gay marriage was legalized in the state and, in 2015, was legalized across the entire country. Given Colorado’s particular history regarding its LGBT+ citizens, Pride is a big deal.

After two years of hybrid celebrations, Out Boulder County is celebrating the in-person return of Pride with a whole new series of events spanning throughout Boulder County starting June 6. This year’s events will include local food trucks, interactive games and kids’ corner, resource and vendor booths, and community speakers. Pride at the High Brau Taphouse The High Brau Taphouse in Greeley has long been a business supportive of the LGBT+ community and has held many successful Pride events in past years. 2022 will be no different, with their popular Pride Prom returning in June as well as a special Pride-themed Karaoke Night. While specific dates and times have not been set, the folks at High Brau are working on the details now. We know that events will likely be held during the second and fourth weeks of June. When life hands you lemons, make lemony lamb chops,or a lemon tar t,or ...

Lemons get a bad rap.
When we buy a car that doesn’t run, we call it a lemon. When life gives you lemons, we say you should make lemonade, as if lemons were something merely to be endured. It’s not fair. Lemons are bright and sunshiny, brisk and invigorating. They add a delicious splash of life to food, they sprinkle it with the essence of spring. I say, when life gives you lemons, you should celebrate. Yay, lemons! It’s time we elevate the humble lemon to the pantheon of culinary flavors. And so I decided to cook four dishes that take full advantage of this most versatile of citrus fruits. I made dishes that are sweet and savory, main courses and a dessert. How many other ingredients are equally at home inside a pie as well as saddling up to a piece of grilled meat? I started with shrimp. Lemon is a natural accompaniment to all crustaceans; I don’t think I’ve ever cooked lobster, crab or shrimp without using at least a healthy squeeze or two of lemon. In order to highlight and focus on the taste of the lemon, I decided to make the shrimp the easiest way I know how: I boiled it. JUNE 2022
Usually, when I boil shrimp I use beer or a mixture of beer and water and a bountiful amount of Old Bay seasoning. But this time, I decided to mix lemon juice with water. In my first attempt, I used Old Bay, too. It tasted great, but it tasted like Old Bay with just a hint of lemon. So I tried the water and lemon juice alone. It was still good, but not lemony enough. So I tried water and more lemon juice. It was better, but still not lemony enough. So I tried a proportion of nearly equal amounts of lemon juice and water, and the result was everything I could hope for — bright and lemony, without overpowering the shrimp. You can serve the shrimp hot or cold. I decided to forego the traditional cocktail sauce, because I wanted to savor the flavor of lemon. But if you think shrimp are indecently naked without cocktail sauce, by all means go ahead and serve it. I next decided to take advantage of a classic combination of flavors that is often overlooked: lamb with lemon. The tang of the lemon plays a soaring counterpoint to what many people (not me) think of as the gaminess of lamb. I used tender and flavorful lamb chops, and created a marinade of things that go particularly well with lamb — olive oil, garlic, shallots, Dijon mustard, thyme (or rosemary) and lemon juice, plus salt and pepper. I covered the meat with the marinade for one hour before cooking it. Usually, I grill my lamb, but not everyone has a grill. So NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE 61
I decided to cook mine on the stove. You don’t get any of the flavor of the fire that way, which is especially desirable with lamb, but you do get more caramelization across the surface of the meat as a trade-off. It was quicker and easier than using the grill, and the results were marvelous. The lemon was a high note singing clearly and steadily over the earthbound meatiness of the lamb. When I thought about how to make a lemon chicken, I had a brilliant idea: Why not use the exact same marinade that I had used for the lamb? After all, olive oil, garlic, shallots, Dijon mustard, thyme (or rosemary), lemon juice and salt and pepper all go particularly well with chicken, too. Usually I grill my chicken, but not everyone has a grill. So I decided to cook mine in the oven. You don’t get any of the flavor of the fire that way, which is especially desirable with chicken, but it is easier to cook, and less fussy. The chicken tasted great, it was a wonderful roast chicken. But to be honest, it wasn’t lemony enough to be lemon chicken. So I doubled the amount of lemon juice in the marinade and tried again. The result was subtle, but remarkably pleasant. Not too lemony at all. For dessert, I had thought to make lemon meringue pie, but I decided that was too commonplace. So I made a lemon Shaker tart. Reputedly based on a recipe from the Shakers, this tart uses every part of the lemon, skin and all. Well, not the seeds. But it uses the whole lemon, minus the seeds. I made cookbook author Alison Roman’s recipe, which uses a simple shortbread crust. It’s ridiculously delicious, a buttery, crisp base for the lemon custard to go on top. The custard is also easy, but it requires some waiting time. You slice a lemon very thin, removing any seeds, and let the slices sit in a mixture of lemon juice and sugar for at least one hour and up to a full day. Then you mix in a lot of egg yolks and whole eggs, along with a bit of flour and a dash of salt, and bake it until you can’t stand how good your house smells. The tart is an absolute delight, and it is not too sweet as many lemon desserts can be.
LEMON-BOILED SHRIMP
Yield: 4 servings 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons lemon juice 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons water 1 pound shrimp, with or without shells For optional cocktail sauce: 3/4 cup chili sauce 1/3 cup ketchup 1 or 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce Juice from 1 or 2 wedges of lemon 1. In a large pot, bring lemon juice and water to a boil. Add shrimp and boil until shrimp are pink and curled; the time will vary depending on the size of the shrimp. Serve hot or cold. 2. If making a cocktail sauce, combine chili sauce, ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice in a bowl. Serve with shrimp. Per serving: 183 calories; 1 g fat; 1 g saturated fat; 183 mg cholesterol; 24 g protein; 21 g carbohydrate; 14 g sugar; 2 g fiber; 1,072 mg sodium; 91 mg calcium

LEMON LAMB CHOPS
Yield: 3 to 4 servings 2 pounds lamb chops 1/4 cup lemon juice 1 garlic clove 1 tablespoon roughly chopped shallots 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary leaves 1/4 cup olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons oil (not olive oil), if cooking on stove 1. Place lamb chops in a flat dish. Put lemon juice, garlic, shallots, mustard, thyme or rosemary, olive oil and salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour marinade over both sides of lamb and let sit at room temperature for 1 hour, turning once or twice. 2. Set up grill for direct heat or place a large, heavy skillet over high heat and add 2 tablespoons oil. Cook meat, turning once or twice, until desired doneness (about 5 minutes total for medium rare for 3/4-inch chops). Pour marinade over and around chicken and let sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 425 degrees. 2. Place chicken on a rack in a roasting pan (if you don’t have a rack, place it on top of potatoes, carrots, celery or a combination). For the best appearance, truss the legs and wings. Roast in oven until done, about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the size of the chicken; if it is getting too brown on top, cover with aluminum foil. The chicken will be done when the legs move freely in their joints. 3. Tent with aluminum foil and wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before carving. LEMON SHAKER TART
Yield: 8 servings For the crust 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup powdered sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 12 tablespoons (11/2 sticks) melted unsalted butter For the filling 1 Meyer lemon or 1 regular lemon, very thinly sliced, seeds removed (see notes) JUNE 2022
1 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup Meyer lemon juice or regular lemon juice 3 large egg yolks 2 large eggs 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt Notes: Use a sharp or serrated knife to cut the lemons; do not use a mandoline. — Crust can be baked 2 days ahead, tart can be baked 1 day ahead. 1. Make the crust: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Combine the flour, powdered sugar and salt in a medium bowl. Drizzle in the melted butter and mix until it’s well combined (it will have a sort of Play-Doh-type texture). Press this into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch tart pan or 9-inch springform pan. Use a measuring cup to flatten it and make sure it’s all even. 3. Bake the tart shell until it’s a pale golden brown on the edges and baked through on the bottom (it will lose that greasy shine), about 20 minutes. 4. Make the filling: Toss the lemon slices, granulated sugar and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Let this sit out at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours to soften the peels. 5. Whisk the egg yolks, eggs, flour and salt in a medium bowl, making sure zero lumps remain (if there are stubborn bits of flour, then strain the mixture; otherwise they’ll float to the top and won’t disappear when baked), and add the mixture to the bowl with the lemon slices. Toss everything to combine, then transfer to the crust. 6. Bake the tart until the edges are set and the center just barely jiggles, about 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool completely before slicing.
