Joneson’s other child is 2. Weld RE-4 spokesperson Lisa Relou said the school district and charter academy many years ago decided not to allow transfers after the first 10 days of school. Relou said the agreement came about because “it’s challenging for our district and WCA to set budget and staffing if students are going back and forth between our systems.” Joneson and her husband both work at home. They considered GreeleyEvans School District 6 for their daughter. In late August, District 6 began requiring masks for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grades. Joneson said the family ruled the district

WCA executive board president John Feyen said the board’s vote on mask was not unanimous. He said the board, though, ultimately felt parents were best equipped to make the decision. “If they felt they needed to mask, fantastic, and if they’re not masked, fantastic,” Feyen said. “Parents are the best arbiter of their child’s health care.” The American Academy of Pediatrics, an organization of 67,000 pediatricians, recommends universal masking in schools for everyone ages 2 and up.

Joneson said she wants her daughter to wear a mask. The girl doesn’t always want to wear a mask because she says she is made fun of by other students. Feyen said any shaming or belittling directed toward students because of the

CELEBRATING YOUR PET’S LIFE BY SANDI SQUICQUERO This last week I celebrated Holly’s life as I do every year. She entered heaven in 2005. Unknown to me, Holly’s death would begin a journey of grieving as my mother would pass away shortly after. Holly was a beautiful black Cocker Spaniel with a dot of white under her neck. We bought her during the Christmas holiday in 1988 from the same family that we bought her sister Moxie from a year earlier. Everywhere I went, Holly followed and Moxie was not far behind. Moxie, Holly and Ace, our black Chow, were our family. During Thanksgiving they each would hang around the stove wagging their tails waiting for the smallest bit of turkey.We would take our family Christmas picture making sure our puppies were front and center to show off their Christmas collars with Santa bells. We added a yellow Labrador retriever, “Dallas,” and a Blue Healer named Rocky to our mix, and we had the 5 amigos! Ace suffered a fatal stroke in 2002.The years passed and we lost Moxie to kidney failure.Several years later Holly passed away after a long battle with lung cancer. Rocky developed melanoma and passed away in 2011 followed by Dallas in 2012. We were devastated by these losses and went through a prolonged grieving process. The factor that brought us through all of this was the love and fond memories that each of these “angels with paws”gave to us. The experience of losing a pet is never easy.Losing and grieving for a pet is very similar to the loss that we experience when we grieve for a human loved one. Sometimes it is more intense, as many people do not share as much time with their families and friends as they do with their pets. When you lose your pet, your life and your daily routines change. Caring for your pet is no longer required and you find yourself a bit lost. When a child loses a pet,he or she will undoubtedly experience the same emotional impact of loss that adults do.The difference is that they lack the emotional maturity and the life experience of adults. As a psychotherapist, I have spent many hours listening to children talk about their pets, the joy and love of having them to share their life with and the grief of losing them. 8 | mywindsor | OCTOBER 2021

THIS IS “JEFF’S” STORY: Jeff at age 7 presented in my office for problems and life stressors related to school behavior. During the 6 month period that I saw him for psychotherapy, he lost his cat Daisy who died from complications from hypothyroidism, his grandfather Ed who died from cancer and he lost “Gobi”, his Beta. His mother said “his strongest reaction was the loss of Daisy”. Jeff had lost his grandfather one month earlier and his parents had prepared him for this loss through their Christian faith that death is natural, final and inevitable. Jeff grieved for Daisy for a long time and his response to grief included changes in eating, sleeping patterns and anger because he did not have the opportunity to say goodbye to Daisy.Jeff spoke randomly about Daisy’s softness,how he missed her and his hopes of her being in heaven at the Rainbow Bridge. After Daisy died,Jeff had a dream of her being in his room and telling him that she was okay. His parents gave him the opportunity to talk openly about Daisy’s death and became a positive force in helping him express his feelings.Jeff had a profound connection to Daisy and was able to honor her memory. I feel the experience he had with Daisy’s death may have triggered the feelings he was unable to express when his grandfather died. Most importantly, his coping with Daisy’s death may have given him the confidence,and skills to cope with future loss. Pets have a unique place in our lives, both in life and in death. In life they teach us about love and responsibility, about honesty and trust.They bring us joy and make us laugh. In death they allow us to learn to accept loss and move on in our lives,never forgetting the wonderful friend who was a part of our life as they continue to enrich our world. — Sandi Y. group of residents in the Weld RE-4 School District are unhappy with the direction of the board of education, and they’re attempting to recall two second-term board members to gain better representation in the community.

Board president Jennifer Lieber and member Regan Price, the two women on the five-person board, are the subject of the potential recall — which is not fully rooted in the board’s position on a districtwide mask requirement to fight COVID-19, according to one of the proponents. “A lot of it stems from transparency and a lot of concerns from the community,” Windsor resident Luke Alles said.“There are certain things. We’re not against pronouns. 10 | mywindsor | OCTOBER 2021

Our concern with masks is not having a choice.” Lieber and Price’s second terms will be up in 2023,along with fellow board member Russell Smart. Board members Christopher Perkins and Lance Nichols are running for reelection this year. Alles said the recall effort is not directed at Lieber and Price because they’re women. Alles said Smart has shown a willingness to listen and to engage with the side of the community that is in favor of a recall. Alles said Smart was involved in a Facebook group where he could see comments, and at an Aug. 24 board meeting Smart proposed an idea on how the district could handle masks. “It felt like he was representing the other side of the community,” Alles said. Alles said he initiated the recall, and he’s

working with Severance resident Ashley Harrison and Windsor resident Beth Gates, who is Alles’ sister, in leading about 30 other district residents on the effort. “People are more and more frustrated because they don’t have a voice,” Alles said. “There was no public comment at that last meeting (Sept. 8), and a 5-0 vote is not representative on how people feel. People feel like their voices have been shut off.” The recall attempt is in the early stages. If the effort leads to an election, it won’t be held until 2022, according Weld County Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes. The county issued petitions to the proponents on Sept. 10. They have until Nov. 10 to collect signatures and submit those to the county, which serves as the designated election official. The clerk and recorder certifies the petitions and calls for

But because no election was held in 2019 — when Lieber and Price ran unopposed — the petition toward a recall must be signed by at least 10% of eligible electors in the school district on June 29, the date the county ran active and inactive numbers to determine the number of signatures needed. Koppes said on June 29 there were 31,197 eligible electors, comprised of active and inactive voters, in Weld RE-4. Koppes has 30 days after the signed petitions are submitted to review the petitions for sufficiency. This includes verifying only active voters signed the petitions. Koppes then notifies the school district, the board members and the recall committee of the status of the recall effort. and conducts a school board recall election. Only active voters in the Weld RE-4 School District may sign the petitions. The proponents need 3,120 signatures for each petition to continue with the effort.

A petition to recall a school district officer shall be signed by at least 40% of all eligible electors who cast ballots at the last preceding election for all candidates for the board of education.

Over the following 21 business days, the sufficiency or insufficiency of the petitions may be challenged, Koppes said. “Either group can protest, and say, ‘I don’t believe this is sufficient,’ and explain why,” Koppes said. During this period, a Weld RE-4 voter might decide to no longer support the petition or the board members could opt to resign, which would end the effort.

Koppes then has 60 days to set the date of the special election. The estimated cost of a special election, should the process reach that point, is a little more than $85,000. Koppes said the county would pay for the election and then be reimbursed by the school district. “We’ve got a long way to go on this,” Koppes said. “The timeline is always shifting for a recall.” Koppes said in her 17 1/2 years with the clerk and recorder’s office, the county has overseen three school district recall elections: in Pawnee (Grover), in Weld RE3J (Hudson, Keenesburg, Lochbuie and Roggen) and Weld RE-1 (Gilcrest, LaSalle and Platteville). There have been four other failed recall attempts in the same span. Koppes said this year the county has received a “handful” of other inquiries about recalls.

I feel frustrated that money may be spent on a special election that should be going to kids, and I’m also humbled and honored in the support we’re getting from the community.” Lieber and Price, both of whom have children in RE-4 schools, wrote a letter to the editor of the Greeley Tribune earlier this month standing up for and supporting their work on behalf of the district. “What I say is education and these kids are all I think about it,” Price said. “When I sit up there at board meetings and I hear people say I don’t care is beyond further than the truth.” Alles, Harrison and Gates, the leaders of the recall effort, are affiliated with a

students, teachers and faculty of RE-4, and defending the constitution of Colorado and the United States of America,” according to a description on Facebook. “Our goal is to work with community and district leaders of RE-4 to rise together to ensure best in class overall education experience, for both charter and public schools in the district.” Brooke Alles, Luke’s wife, was one of the Guardians founders and is the registered agent of the nonprofit. The registered agent is the individual or business responsible for accepting service of process for the entity. Brooke Alles is also the president of the board of directors on the Guardians of RE4 website. Harrison is the vice president, Gates is the treasurer and Blakely Bowley is the secretary. Luke Alles said he was in favor of the recall and initiated the effort before the Guardians formed. Windsor resident Aaron Smith, who was among the founders of the Guardians, is running for a board seat against an incumbent. Former RE-4 board of education member Trent Leisy, who has addressed the Guardians, according to Luke Alles, is also running for a seat against an incumbent. Smith is running against Chris Perkins, who is vying for a second term. Leisy, who served on the RE-4 board from 2005 to 2009, is running against Lance Nichols. Nichols was appointed in the spring to replace Brad Irion, who resigned in February. Luke Alles said Smith planned to run for a seat prior to the founding of the Guardians. Alles said he understood if residents in the district community were confused about the relationship between the Guardians and the recall effort. He said no funds from the Guardians are going toward the recall.

Lieber and Price joined the board of education in 2015. Lieber was appointed in August 2015, following the resignation of Rick Klimek. She defeated opponents Kristen Hice and Tiffany Herrington in the general election in November. Price ran unopposed in November 2015. Lieber, who works with students in the College of Education at the University of Northern Colorado, said she wants to continue serving the school district. A Windsor resident, Lieber is also a graduate 12 | mywindsor | OCTOBER 2021

community group of district residents called Guardians of RE4. Founded in June, the Guardians have more than 1,300 members on Facebook. The Guardians also have status as a nonprofit, a 501(c)(3), and formed June 24 as a registered business entity with Colorado Department of State. The Guardians are “dedicated to investing in the overall success and growth of Weld RE-4 students while focusing on protecting our rights, advocating for the

The Guardians group, all we’re about is parent choice.” Lieber, Price, Perkins and Nichols have the backing of another district community organization known as Unite RE-4. On its Facebook page, the group advocates for declining to sign the petition for a special election, while supporting Perkins and Nichols in November “to preserve continuity, competency, and cooperation in the Weld RE-4 School Board.” The group describes itself as bipartisan and it “does not take a stance on COVID mitigation strategies, except that we believe

a single temporary policy – presently aligned with 75 percent of Colorado schools, including neighboring school districts – does not justify a recall effort nor a purging of Weld RE-4 leadership.”

THE 2021 CELEBRATING WOMEN

Unite RE-4 also supports the $179 million bond and $3 million mill levy override issues that will appear before voters on the November ballot. One of the organizers of Unite RE-4 is Windsor resident and parent Kristen Hice. Hice said she and the other parents and district residents involved believe in the current board of education and district leadership, and they want to allow them to continue to do their work. “We stand behind the leadership over the last several years and not just over the effects of the last few months with the pandemic,” Hice said. Unite RE-4 as a group also noted that district leadership has maintained in-person learning for more schools than neighboring school districts throughout the pandemic. Hice said there is a false accusation that the board of education and district does not listen to constituents. She said for residents who have served on other boards and in other district-related groups, they’ve found the school system willing to engage with the community. “There are opportunities to be on committees and they’ve been around forever,” Hice said. “You can be involved and be part of the solution.”

WINDSOR BEGINS IMPROVEMENTS, RECONSTRUCTION FOR 2 PARKS BY TREVOR REID

fforts to update a Windsor park playground began Tuesday, and construction is set to begin next week to rebuild another park burned in a fire that remains under investigation.

Early this year, the town began the Windsor Village Park project to engage residents in plans to update the playground equipment for the park at 55 Rochester Drive, according to a town news release.Parks,Recreation and Culture staff on June 15 discussed plans and gave residents an opportunity to view two concepts and cast their vote on their favorite playground design.

On Tuesday, the town began dismantling the old playground to install the design selected by the community.According to an update, 80% of parents and children who attended the June 15 meeting voted for the design. Construction is scheduled to be completed midNovember. “We are excited to build with the community in mind and provide what they are asking for,” said Parks, Recreation and Culture deputy director Tara Fotsch in the release.“We are lucky to have a community that is highly involved in how we build and what is built on behalf of their children.” On Monday, the town will begin construction for the Village East playground, which was partially closed July 5, after a fire burned a portion of the park and playground equipment at 865 East Edge Circle. The 3-acre park opened July 2019 and cost $1.3 million to build. So now the question is: What to do with Jasper and Patches. Options exist,but you’ll need to decide which one is best for you and for your fur baby and you should do it now before time runs out. "I encourage pet owners to make boarding reservations now,”said Kelly Hess, owner of Camp Bow Wow in Loveland.“We already have numerous reservations for Thanksgiving and Christmas.” It’s especially important this year to get your reservations in early, Hess said, be it with a boarding facility or pet sitter, as the number of requests have grown right along with the population in northern Colorado. How do you find a kennel or pet sitter that passes muster? Start by doing your research.Ask friends and family where they 16 | mywindsor | OCTOBER 2021

You should also personally check out the facility or pet sitter’s home (if you choose to go that route) to ensure it’s clean, secure and safe. And then ask: How much exercise do dogs get? How often do they get potty breaks? What kind of training does staff or the pet sitter have? And what is the ratio of staff to dogs. In Colorado, it’s 15 to 1. If you opt to leave your pet at home, make sure you and the pet sitter are on the same page in regard to the number of visits and what should be accomplished during those visits, whether it’s a walk, playtime or just hanging out. Some pet sitters will collect newspapers and mail, water plants, etc., so it never hurts to ask. At kennels,make sure you understand what is included in the fee. Many kennels,such as Camp Bow Wow,have an all-inclusive rate while others offer day camp,video streaming,one-on-one playtime,

Although Mix does daily drop-ins only,she does have a person willing to do overnights. “The benefit of pet sitting in the home is there is less stress on the animal, but it also depends on their personalities. Some dogs take to boarding and love it,”she said, but many elderly dogs and cats along with puppies and kittens can’t be boarded. If your dog will be staying in a private home, find out how many dogs will be there at the same time,if there are children, and find out what the house rules are,such as whether or not it’s OK to jump on the bed at night. Also ask if blankets and toys

are cleaned before your pet arrives. Requirements for boarding include immunizations for rabies, distemper and bordatella. Some facilities will want you to bring your dog’s favorite blanket or toy, others request that you only bring enough food for her stay along with any required medications.

“If price really matters, then look into boarding. If health of the animal is a priority, then consider pet sitting.” Mix said some rescue dogs sometimes have trouble being with other dogs, and some animals who are boarded pick up unfavorable behaviors, such as barking. The bottom line is, whatever route you go, you’ll want your pet to be in a safe, secure and clean environment where he or she is loved and looked after.

Cool Kids in Town Goats Graze Their Way Into Pet Owners’ Hearts BY ELISE OBERLIESEN

or many people, the traditional way to pick the perfect pet usually involves a trip to PetCo, to stare at cute kittens through the cold glass window-- or an adoption event at a pet shelter. Depending what you want, maybe it’s time to drive out to the farm to find a fur baby—like a goat.

Remember those ‘Day On the Farm’elementary school fieldtrips? All the second graders huddled around to dote on cuddly baby animals. Inevitably, there was always that

one unassuming child that become acquainted with the goat that acted all Joe Cool--as he sauntered up to say hi. And with goat-like speed, stuck his neck out to snatch and eat the child’s name tag. For many children, farm day lets children hold and feed baby animals for their very first time, says Janet Farkas, owner of Barnyard Buddies, in Loveland, where she breeds endangered animals like fainting goats, magpie ducks and Texas Longhorns.

Similar to dogs, goats can live up to 15 years, walk well on leash and ride in the car unkenneled, Farkas said. While most people keep goats as outdoor pets, some people train them to stay indoors. “They can be littered-trained or will stand at the door to go outside,” Farkas said.

Getting Started Before you run out the door to start goat shopping, so some homework to learn which breeds make better pets. The list runs long, but here are some top picks to consider. Pygmy goats, known for short legs and stature, Labrador retriever size. Nigerian Dwarfs, with slightly longer legs, these girls produce milk with higher butterfat--ideal for homemade butter and cheese. Pygora and Nigora breeds also produce high butterfat, plus warm fiber for those fall and winter knitting projects. When asked which breed Farkas prefers, fainting goats win her heart. Some of her favorites have blue eyes with tricolored hair, or black and white hair, with blue eyes. Fainting goats are born with a hereditary condition called myotonia congenita, which causes their muscles to stiffen up when startled, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. Admittedly, Farkas said, “Goats often get a bad rap,” for various behaviors or boundless energy synonymous with “babyhood.”

During a fainting spell, Farkas said the goats typically don’t lose consciousness. And it doesn’t last too long before they are back on their hooves—foraging on fallen dried leaves. “If they do faint when chewing on food, they lay on their side for about five seconds and then get back up,”Farkas said.

“They’re called kids for a reason. When they’re toddlers and they’ve never tasted anything—they put everything in their mouth,” she said.

Keep in mind. Goats are herd animals and need to be with other goats. Farkas sells goats in pairs unless a customer already has goats. She said it’s not advised to place a single goat with a cow, horse or dog. Goats need other goats.

As they mature, goats develop individual personalities. They learn their names and enjoy human contact, Farkas said. Goats like when we pet them, she added. So it’s easy to see why goats have taken center stage, from things like goat yoga and goat walkouts, led by therapists, to goat cart racing, in Queensland, Australia.

Can you even keep goats? Check city ordinances to determine if your county allows it. Check Loveland city limits pet guidelines for your city and county. The Title 6 document also contains useful pet guidelines. People with HOAs may have an uphill battle to overcome, but Farkas said plenty of people in neighborhoods raise goats in their backyards.

Goats and humans share some common qualities— which includes how they express affection. Wondering if Mister goat loves you? It all depends how they talk to you and use body language. Listen for a consistent pitch in vocalizations—a signal of their fondness of you. Goats also express affection by nudging up to your legs—similar to cats. Goats give a feeling of love, but expect nothing in return, Farkas said, a trait that makes them endearing pets.

Just know, neighbors may not love this new addition to your family if noise levels change. If the animals are properly cared for, with regular food and water, it shouldn’t cause a disturbance, Farkas said.

Food and Shelter

“Fainting goats are great companions, better than a dog. They can give back as much love to you as you can give to them.” Farkas said, which she refers to as “goat therapy.”

Wondering how to keep goat bellies full and keep them warm in the winter? Goats require a three-sided shelter with a roof, to protect them from the elements, Farkas said. In our location, wind and snow blow in from the north.That means it’s important to position the shelter opening faced away from the north. This cuts down on wind and precipitation exposure.

One of Farkas’favorites, John Wayne, a nine-year-old goat who’s especially fond of kids. John Wayne lets youngsters sit on his back and loves when they feed him carrots.

When goats are overly exposed to wet and frigid temps, hypothermia can set in. Watch for signs like lethargy, refusing to eat or drink and low body temperature, Farkas OCTOBER 2021 | mywindsor | 23

said. Goats also need more food during cold, wet blustery weather. “They’re a rumen animal with four stomachs so you have to keep food in the stomach to keep them producing energy to stay warm.” The cost to feed a goat runs similar to feeding a large dog, but with some additional expenses for hay and extra nutrients. “Goats need a salt block, goat mineral tub, and they require copper and vitamin B12 because these minerals are not naturally produced in the ground,” Farkas said. Plan ahead to ensure the goats are properly cared for if you leave them unattended for a period of time. “Make sure they’re fed and have clean water. If they have access to food and water they can be left for two or three days. Be aware, if you live in the mountains, with predators, goats must be closed up in a building at night.”

Did You Know Be aware of the plants and trees in the yard or pasture— because certain plants are toxic to goats. They should avoid lilacs, green leaves from fruit trees and azaleas, Farkas said. Also, during the early spring, goats can get bloated if they overfeed on lush, rich green grass, she added. The condition can be fatal. During spring, she suggested about 30 minutes of grazing in that green rich pasture—and to lighten up on hay. Opt for gradual exposure to green grass. “You cannot turn them out to free range immediately in the spring when everything is so green,” Farkas said

hen Colorado legalized recreational marijuana in 2014, it green-lighted farmers to grow industrial hemp, marijuana’s non-psychoactive cannabis cousin. By May 2018, a state hemp foods bill recognized hemp as a food for human consumption. And when the federal Hemp Bill was passed as part of the Farm Bill at the close of 2018, industrial hemp was removed from the list of controlled substances under the 1970 Controlled Substances Act, flinging the doors open for companies to formulate CBD tinctures, balms, oils and gummies to sell to the public. Hemp plants contain naturally occurring cannabinoids: the two most common are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical compound that creates that marijuana high, and cannabidiol (CBD). Unlike THC, cannabidiol does not create a “high.” Federal law requires that CBD products have less than .3 percent THC. Consuming CBD has been shown in studies to relieve pain and inflammation, and reduce anxiety and depression.

Sweatt and Groves have transitioned from the retail side to manufacturing CBD because they saw a need in the market for a high quality, consistent product. Manufactured in Windsor, their Glacier Pure products are sold in Canada, Germany and across the United States. “Up to this point, when a company wants to manufacture CBD oil, they grow a strain of hemp that produces higher levels of CBD. An extraction company pulls the oil out of the plant after harvesting and blends it with a carrier oil, or for pet treats, peanut butter or animal fat. But the quality of the product depends on the quality of the plant,” Groves said.

“There are over 700 chemical compounds in the hemp plant, you extract between 80-100 and that’s what’s used to make CBD oil.The common misconception is that it’s only CBD; in reality, it’s a whole profile.There’s also THC — the compound that gets you high — but it must be less than .3 percent by federal law,” Sweatt said. Glacier Pure makes products for human use that are either full spectrum with trace THC, but not enough to cause any psychoactive effect, or broad spectrum, which are THC-free. Broad spectrum is useful for people because THC can potentially show up on a urine test.

The problem is that it’s nearly impossible to grow a plant with consistent levels of terpenes (organic compounds) and other flavonoids, one such being cannabinoids. “Just like growing and making wine, each plant will produce a unique product. Weather will change it: if it’s hotter, drier, wetter that affects the taste and the amount of terpenes. Some terpenes are more energizing, others are more calming,” he explained. Glacier Pure has pioneered a method to assure that every batch will be the same. By sourcing the oil reliably, they are able to deconstruct what’s extracted from the plant and then reconstruct it so the oil contains consistent amounts. Glacier Pure’s pet products are full spectrum and are available in bacon and peanut butter flavors. Instead of buying pet treats that contain CBD, Groves recommends dosing Fluffy with their extract that’s blended with coconut oil because it’s easy to absorb. “When you’re buying treats, you’re paying for the treat and the CBD. You can make your own treats with the CBD oil, but it’s best to put it into your pet’s food or put drops on a Milk-Bone,” he said. He recommends dosing 1 mg for every 10 pounds, once a day. It’s a low dosage method to determine whether your pet tolerates CBD. Groves cautioned that too much oil could cause diarrhea or make them tired. It’s best to talk with sales representatives to determine the best strength and bottle size for your dog or cat’s weight.

Can I talk to my vet about giving CBD to my pet? According to the American Kennel Club, federal and state laws currently prohibit vets from discussing CBD oil with pet owners, nor can they dispense, prescribe or recommend it. There are several clinical trials at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine a n d Bio m e di c a l S ci e nc e s researching the benefits of CBD on dogs. An early Phase 1 study indicated that CBD is best delivered in oral oil and that it is safe and well-tolerated in dogs; a Phase 2 Epilepsy trial showed that CBD oil treatment has an 89% reduction of seizure frequency in instances where the cause of epilepsy is unknown. A third Phase 2 study addressing osteoarthritis is waiting for results. While CBD oil use for pets and humans is promising, limited clinical research hasn’t delivered any conclusive answers yet.

Triple negative breast cancer is a very aggressive form of breast cancer with treatment typically beginning with chemotherapy first rather than surgery, such as a lumpectomy or mastectomy, said Dr. Kelsey Shay, a breast surgical oncologist and reconstructive plastic surgeon with Banner Health.

For Paige Hobbs, a physician assistant and co-owner of Seven Trees Aesthetics, October also has those meanings as well as a special significance: breast cancer awareness.

Triple negative breast cancer does not have the receptors or proteins that are tested for on cancer cells, Shay said. Triple negative breast cancer doesn’t have the estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor or Her2 protein, so that is why it is referred to as “triple negative.”

Hobbs was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on Dec. 15, 2020, when she went for a routine mammogram. “I was actually a month or two late for my mammogram; I just hadn’t scheduled it yet,” she explained. “They said that was actually lucky because if I was on schedule and I had gotten two months before, they don’t think they would have caught it. It was very fortunate for me that they saw it because on the imaging it was very small.” The lump was so deep in Hobbs’ tissue that her physician 30 | mywindsor | OCTOBER 2021

“One kind of issue with triple negative breast cancer is that we don’t these really specific targeted medications. For estrogen or progesterone positive cancers, we can give them these anti-hormone pills and for Her2 proteins we have some Her2 directed therapies,” Shay said. “But triple negative, we don’t have any specific therapies because we don’t have any receptors to attack.” Continues on Page 32.

Hobbs finished her last session of chemotherapy on July 16, and while she is recovering, she says she still has a “long way to go” before she is back to her old self. “Chemotherapy goes through every cell in your body and pretty much every system has to recover. Given the wealth of benefits caring for an animal can bring,it’s no wonder the past eighteen months plus have witnessed a pet adoption boom,at least anecdotalllly.While l we may love the alliteration of the term ‘pandemic pets’, pet adoptions don’t appear to have been on impulse, at least not locally.

Will a pet ﬁt my lifestyle? Pets require a lot of care and regu gular u routines,Dunn says.How active are you? How much do you need to travel? How much time are you able to devote to a pet every day? If it’s limited,who else is going to share the responsibilities?

“We’ve actually seen a fairly similar demand compared to ‘normal’ years,” says Jordan Dunn, Director of Community Engagement at Animal Friends Alliance. All “Overall, people who adopted were already interested in bringing on a pet,but when their circumstances changed offering more flexibility ty, y they recognized a good opportu tunity u ty.”That’s y a good thing,too.As much as the rewards 36 | mywindsor | OCTOBER 2021

In addition to your personal and travel routines, consider your living situation. Will your current housing situation meet the needs of your new pet? Be aware, landlords and HOAs may have policies not only on pets in general, but on specific breeds. Do your research—find information on pet-friendly housing in Larimer County tyy from the Larimer Humane Society tyy website at larimerhumane.org/adopt-a-pet/ready-to-adopt/.

Will a pet ﬁt in my budget? “Even basic care-- food, treats, toys, beddings, routine vet visits—can cost roughly $500 or more annually for cats, $1000 or more for dogs,” Dunn says. Add to that costs of petsitting or boarding if you travel frequently. If you’re adopting an older pet or one with existing medical needs, plan on a cushion for vet visits and medications.Consider your expenses, but know that when times are tough, there are resources to turn to for help. At Animal Friends Alliance, for instance, pet owners who are facing a temporary hardship can receive free pet food from the Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry on designated distribution days. Am I ready to commit for 10-20 or so years? Life is all about change. Try to think beyond the short-term, Dunn suggests.You may want to go back to school, have kids, get married. How will those anticipated changes affect a pet? “Having a pet is amazing,and repays tenfold in the love you get back,” Dunn says, “but it also does impact your options in life.”Anticipating life’s changes may help shape your choices in ways that keep possibilities open and flexible. What are my expectations around having a pet? Do a little soul-searching

before pet-searching, Dunn advises. Do you need a running buddy or active hiking pal, a social dog to bring to lots of venues,or a quiet cuddly companion? What will I do if my pet doesn’t align? Animal Friends Alliance provides a great deal of information and resources to help you throughout your pet journey at savinganimalstoday.org. Larimer Humane Society also offers numerous education programs that can help you prepare for and adapt to the needs of your pet. Both organizations further offer support from adoption counselors who can guide you step-by-step. Finally, Larimer Humane Society and Animal Friends Alliance each have adoption processes in place that support a mutual fit, starting with an adoption questionnaire and counsel from AFA, and the client services team at LHS. Despite every effort to find that perfect fit,there are times when a pet and people just aren’t a match.Our local services understand this, and do their best to provide support. Larimer Humane Society know how difficult a decision to re-home a pet can be, and are ready to help with the process of re-homing. As a committed adoption guarantee shelter,

Animal Friends Alliance will always take the animals back. “Ultimately, we want what is best for people and animals,”Dunn says.“We don’t want to create any barriers or stigma,or for people to feel like they’ve failed.” Beyond Pet Ownership Maybe you long for animal companionship, but realize it’s not a realistic commitment right now.There are plenty of other gratifying options to consider, a foremost being fostering. “For folks who aren’t in a position to adopt, fostering is a really great way to get the whole family involved,”Dunn says.“You really get to see the benefit, even fostering puppies for just one week until they can get fixed, for example. You see them get healthy, get their shine.” In addition to fostering, never underestimate the impact of donations. here are some things you can do at home to keep your dog looking fresh between professional grooming services. We asked the professionals what you can do at home, and what you should leave up to them. Chloe Chabot, business development manager for the Dog Pawlour, says,“If you have a dog that is willing to do it and you know how to do it yourself, then nail trimming at home is a wonderful thing to keep up with. For a dog with a great baseline you could trim their nails every six to eight weeks. But it just depends on the dog and how active they are.” A telltale sign it’s time for you dog to go in for a nail trim is when you hear the clicking sound of your dog’s nails on the floor. “When you hear that sound it’s time to come in and show us so we can help clean up. Letting nails grow out can affect the way your dog stands and even change their spine in the long run,” she says. Chabot says other easy things to keep up on at home are ear cleaning and teeth brushing. If you have a dog breed with

longer and droopier ears it is especially important to clean their ears at home because they are more prone to ear infections. “Use a liquid solution without astringent so it’s not drying. Take cotton balls and swirl them around in the ears after you put the liquid in. Dog ears are shaped different than human ears. They’re shaped like an L, so you can go in and not worry about piercing their ear drum,” Chabot says. The Dog Pawlour carries ear cleaner and ear wipes customers can buy for at home use. As for tooth brushing, a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically created for dogs can take care of their teeth between professional cleanings at the groomers. At home brushing is a must, too. Erin Parker opened Hot Rod Dog in 2005 when she was 18-years-old. As an experienced groomer, she says brushing at home is an absolute must, especially in spring and fall when dogs shed the most and their undercoat is coming out.
