indsor High School’s 2022 graduation ceremony marked the last commencement for longtime principal Michelle Scallon, who is taking over as the Weld RE-4 School District superintendent next month. In total, 288 high school students gathered Sunday morning at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.

Windsor High School had an impressive graduating class with 42 graduating cum laude (with distinction), 51 magna cum laude (with great distinction) and 28 summa cum laude, or with highest distinction. 18 | mywindsor | JUNE 2022

A tearful Scallon said farewell to her students heading into the posthigh school world as she begins her next chapter following with a farewell to being principal — a role she has held since 2012. While she is taking over as superintendent of the district, Tom Dodd, Lesher Middle School’s principal of Poudre School District in Fort Collins, will become Windsor High School’s next principal. “It has been my pleasure being your principal these last four years,”Scallon said. “Every one of you have left a handprint on my heart.” Scallon, while singing lyrics from different songs during her speech, highlighted the wide variety of

talents, personalities, backgrounds and interests of the class of 2022. No matter what comes next, whether it be college, a career or the military, she reminded the graduates to continue learning, do the right thing, never give up and be humble. “Class of 2022, we are ready to send you out in the world and I believe you are ready,”Scallon said.“It is our honor to recognize these students for their accomplishment and we wish them well as they into the next chapter of their lives.” Out of the 288 students in cap and gowns — five of whom are going into the armed forces — many received recognition for their

academic achievements, including four Advanced Placement students, two Wilbert R. Wiedeman honors for community involvement, salutatorian Jacy Butler and valedictorian Megan Dodrill.

Similar to Dodrill, Abby Bush, who gave the student address, talked about the mentally challenging years of the pandemic and the strength and adjustability of the graduating students. Despite the bumps along the way, with a joke that high school was nothing like the movie "High School Musical," Bush said her time at Windsor High School has been the best ride. "Once a wizard, always a wizard," Bush said.

eeting up with family and friends to check out the local events is a big part of summer, and Northern Colorado has plenty of options.

There are classic, longstanding events like county fairs and art shows, as well as smaller events from weekly farmers markets to food and beverage parings. For a sampling of the area’s classics, consider the Greeley and Larimer county fairs, Art in the Park, Sculpture in the Park and the Greeley Arts Picnic. Plus, there’s national attention-grabbing Korn Ferry TOUR’s stop at TPC Colorado in Berthoud.

THE GREELEY STAMPEDE

The Greeley Stampede will celebrate its 100th year June 24 to July 4 as it brings together the usual fair activities of competitions, concerts and carnival rides, along with a list of new offerings that expand every area of the event. “It’s a pretty big deal for us,” said Kevin McFarling, marketing coordinator of the Greeley Stampede. “We are trying to make the event a little bigger than we have in the past.” A new stage will be unveiled this year, Civitas Park Music Stage, and larger names will be added to the performance lineup with more artists than in previous years. The food court will have the addition of rotating food trucks. And there will be new specialty events, like Hover Board Barrel Racing, the Corn Hole Tournament and the LEGOCreation Festival. Some old favorites will remain, such as the Kids Korral, Petting Zoo, Pedal Tractors, Sheep Stampede, Sea Lion Splash and Great American Duck Race. There also will be the Western Art Show, the Fourth of July parade and fireworks show, and the carnival midway.

KORN FERRY JUNE 28 - JULY 3 TOUR/THE ASCENDANT PRESENTED BY BLUE Another big event for Northern Colorado is the Korn Ferry TOUR’s The Ascendant at TPC Colorado June 28 to July 3. TPC Colorado in Berthoud is one of 26 Korn Ferry competitions. Korn Ferry is the developmental tour for professional golfers who have not reached the PGA TOUR or failed to win enough FedEx Cup points to remain on tour. WELD RE-4 SCHOOL DISTRICT TAKES OWNERSHIP OF RAINDANCE PROPERTY IN WINDSOR BY ANNE DELANEY indsor land that was the source of significant community conversation during the past few months surrounding a potential charter school officially belongs to the Weld RE-4 School District.

The district has long designated the land as the site of a future kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school. RainDance was one of two sites for a 600-student K-5 building under the district’s $179 million bond proposal in 2021.

The Weld RE-4 board of education voted Monday (May16, 2022) evening to accept the deed for the 10-acre parcel — known as the RainDance property — on Covered Bridge Parkway in the RainDance section of Windsor.

Despite the failure of the bond measure, the district has maintained it wants to retain possession of the land. RainDance is again part of potential bond packages being considered by Weld RE-4 and community members.

Board acceptance means the land at 2015 Covered Bridge Parkway was acquired by the district from RainDance Development LLC and owner Martin Lind.

Earlier this month, the Weld RE-4 board in a 4-1 vote declined to sell the RainDance property for $2.1 million to charter school group American Legacy Academy.

The school district did not buy the RainDance land. In Colorado, through intergovernmental agreements, developers have two ways to contribute to school districts: by providing land and a cash-in-lieu of land arrangement where a developer gives a school district to buy land in another location.

The board’s decision capped months of communication between American Legacy Academy and district leaders on two issues surrounding the charter school’s interest in opening schools in Windsor and Severance: the acquisition of the RainDance land and American Legacy Academy’s application to operate the schools in the area.

The deed was signed over to the school district in April according to Weld RE-4 chief operating officer Jason Seybert, who addressed the board on the acceptance. District legal representatives then reviewed the transaction. The land is estimated to be worth $2.1 million, the school district has said based on information from the developer. Seybert said an official appraisal will take place after the district takes ownership. 26 | mywindsor | JUNE 2022

Also on Monday evening: the Weld RE-4 board heard from chief financial officer Nikki Schmidt on a preliminary budget for fiscal year 2023. The final budget will be approved at the June 20 board meeting. The total recommended appropriation for all funds is $152,519,637 million. This is down slightly from the $154.5 million in the revised budget in January.

Sr. Airman Kristopher Mansfield, 23, was leaving his work at the Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora on Sept. 4, 2004, when a drunk driver struck his motorcycle at Colorado Boulevard and Ohio Avenue. “It’s strange,”Julie said.“They talk about a new normal, you know? And our new normal, our whole family’s new normal, has been life without Kris.” Since 2019, there have been twice as many impaired driving deaths on Colorado roads, from 36 in 2019 to 72 in 2022, according to fatal crash data from the Colorado Department of Transportation. In Weld County, 12 impaired-related fatal crashes occurred in 2021, killing 17, data showed. In the first four months of 2022, Weld County has had two fatal crashes 28 | mywindsor | JUNE 2022

involving impairment. Ever since the day they lost their son, Windsor residents Julie and her husband Don, have dedicated their time to sharing Mansfield’s story and informing the community about the importance of drunk driving prevention. Julie, in particular, has become an active member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving by helping with fundraiser efforts for the annual northern Colorado Walk Like MADD event. For 14 years, she has also spoken at DUI victim impact panels in Fort Collins and Greeley, as well as schools in Colorado. “We don’t want anybody else to have to experience what we experienced,” Mansfield’s stepdad Don said.

Mansfield’s life continues to make a difference In July 2001, when a 20-year-old Mansfield made the decision to join the U.S. Air Force, Julie asked him why. “He said, ‘I’m 20 years old, and I want my life to make a difference,'” Julie said.

Stationed in Aurora, Mansfield began his military career in satellite communications. By January 2004, he was deployed to Iraq for five months. Upon his return, the Air Force sent him to Fort Gordon in Georgia to learn more about his career field. When he came back to Colorado, he called his mother, who had no idea their talk would be such a pivotal moment and long-lasting memory for her. “He called us on Sept. 3 to tell us he was back and all was well and, ‘I love you, mom,’” Julie said. “Last thing he ever said to me.” On Sept. 4, the Leggs received the news that Mansfield was in the ICU with head trauma after the crash. “We went in, and this young man, who two nights before was alive and vibrant and healthy, was lying in a bed with his head all bandaged, and there were machines breathing for him,” Julie said. Two days later, Julie said their family made the tough decision to turn off the machines and Kris passed away in a room filled with people who loved him. “Because of what he said when he joined the Air Force — he wanted his life to make a difference — and we are continuing to make his life have a difference,” Julie said about her drunk driving prevention efforts.

As Memorial Day, the holiday with the most motorvehicle fatalities, approaches, the time to share Mansfield’s story is more crucial than ever, the Leggs said.

Memorial Day drunk-driving dangers One-third of fatalities on Colorado roads involve an impaired driver, but over Memorial Day weekend, 57% of the fatalities in the state involve an impaired driver, according to Sam Cole, CDOT’s Traffic Safety Communications Manager Combating a large number of drunk driving fatalities remains a focal point year-round in the state, but the much higher rate of fatalities over Memorial Day and other holiday weekends is a main concern for CDOT. Each year around Memorial Day, the department uses prevention methods including increased law enforcement patrol, campaigns and education initiatives. “ We are launching a partnership called ‘Decide to Ride’ in conjunction with MADD and Anheuser-Busch to encourage people to plan ahead and use rideshare programs,” Cole said. “ It is a partnership with U ber, and we expect to offer discount rideshare over the summer.” If Julie could say one thing to an inebriated person about to get behind the wheel and drive, she would say: “Don’t!”

Fines can be upwards of $13,000, and you can lose your license. A little bit of planning can go a long way, and avoid a lot of hassle and possibly even save your life.” The driver who hit Mansfield, a 5 1 - ye a r - o l d personal injur y attorney named Michael Miranda, was sentenced to eight years in prison.The night of the crash, Miranda had an open bottle of liquor in the vehicle and a blood alcohol level of 0.217 — nearly three times the legal limit.

he Windsor History Museum and the adjacent Art & Heritage Center are kicking off summer with one of their most popular family events, Little Tea on the Prairie, on June 4 from 10 a.m. to noon. Guests are invited to dress in their “best prairie clothes and come explore our museum buildings,from the old schoolhouse to the farmhouse, beet shack and train depot,”said Katherine Mercier,museum education coordinator. The pioneer-themed tea will feature interactive art, including decorating a teacup to bake and dry at home,creating a paper star banner and fashioning a rag doll. The paper banner and the rag doll are inspired by crafts Laura Ingalls Wilder makes in her Little House on the Prairie book series.Mercier will lead children in games from the 1800s,and families can dance to the music of an old-time-music player. Children will be able to participate in hands-on activities,such as learning to write in 1800s-style cursive, in each historic museum building. “We’re excited to make history come alive for people,” Mercier said.“The really incredible thing about sites like this is that they give you a way to experience history up close and personal.”For example,she continued,“When you’re standing in our train depot building, you’re standing on one of the first

The Halfway Homestead, the site of an 1873 stagecoach stop, is Windsor’s most recent historic acquisition and has yet to be excavated. Adults and children alike can help break ground from 10 a.m. to noon on July 23 and perhaps discover historical treasures.Archeologists will be on site to guide the excavation and take questions.

“I’ve loved history since I was a kid,” Mercier said. “I love telling stories about the past, and I think that when we know what happened in the past, we better understand the influences on what is happening now and what is going to happen in the future. That’s our mission at the museum.”

Alongside the five historic buildings at the Windsor Museum, the Art & Heritage Center across the street regularly hosts events that enrich the present while reflecting the past. Through Aug. 15, the center is hosting the exhibit Exquisite Miniatures, a collection of 50 miniature paintings by Wes and Rachelle Siegrist. Measuring fewer than nine square inches a painting, the miniatures feature a variety of landscapes and animal portraits. “Kids like to use the magnifying glasses and see a whole world packed into a tiny miniature painting,” noted Mercier. This summer the Windsor Museum will also offer a full schedule of camps for preschoolers through age 12. “These are history-related and nature-based camps, from gardening and canning to how to kayak and make candles,” Mercier said. FUTURE LEGENDS ANNOUNCES VENUE CHANGES FOR HAILSTORM SOCCER, NOCO OWLZ BY JADYN WATSON-FISHER

orthern Colorado’s Hailstorm soccer club and Owlz minor league baseball team announced venue changes for the start of their inaugural seasons.

The Owlz played their first home game on June 1 at Jackson Field, 411 20th St. in Greeley, on the University of Northern Colorado campus. The first two series will be at Jackson Field. The Hailstorm will play its first home game on June 8 at Jackson Stadium, directly across the parking lot from Jackson Field. It is currently 2-2-1 in USL League One play. Both teams were set to begin their seasons at the Future Legends Complex in Windsor, but issues related to construction material availability and litigation with a former contractor impacted the completion date. A spokesperson for Future Legends said the organization hopes Future Legends Field (capacity: 2,500) will be finished by July and TicketSmarter Stadium (capacity: 6,500) will be

finished by September. Depending on the status of materials, however, these estimates may still change. All Hailstorm games are currently set to begin at 7 p.m., and single-game tickets are available online. General admission tickets are $15. Ticket options will be reevaluated with the continued construction of the Future Legends Complex. Owlz games are set for 4:05 p.m. unless they are on Sunday, which begin at 1:05 p.m. Single-game general admission tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are $10 plus any applicable fees. Fans who placed a deposit for season tickets will receive a discounted package. The Owlz began their inaugural season on the road Wednesday, May 25 in Great Falls, Montana, against the Great Falls Voyagers.
