WINDSOR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL MICHELLE SCALLON NAMED NEW WELD RE-4 SUPERINTENDENT Board decision comes during special meeting; hours after end of daylong interviews with 3 finalists BY ANNE DELANEY

he Weld RE-4 School District Board of Education selected Windsor High School principal Michelle Scallon as the new superintendent of the Windsor, Severance and west Greeley school system at a special meeting Tuesday afternoon following a daylong round of interviews with three finalists.

The five-person board voted 4-1 for Scallon, who has been the Windsor High principal since 2012. Board president Russ Smart, Lance Nichols,Patrick Miller and Aaron Smith voted for Scallon. Board member Regan Price opposed the selection. “Michelle rose to the top,” Smart said in a news release from the district late Tuesday afternoon. “It is clear that she loves our community and students, and will work to move our district forward.” The district hosted three finalists for the superintendent job on Monday and Tuesday: Tammy Clementi, an educational leader, researcher, consultant and turnaround specialist; Johan van Nieuwenhuizen,superintendent of Weld RE-1 School District for students in Gilcrest, LaSalle and Platteville; and Scallon. Former superintendent Dan Seegmiller resigned in November after six years on the job. Scallon was selected from a rigorous and comprehensive search 6 | mywindsor | APRIL 2022

process that included stakeholder focus groups,an online survey and a community meet-and-greet,according to the school district.More than 30 candidates applied for the superintendent job. Smith put forth the motion to name Scallon as superintendent and was supported by Smart and Miller. Nichols and Price voted against the motion. Scallon,before becoming the principal at Windsor,was a family and consumer sciences teacher and dean of students in GreeleyEvans School District. She also worked as a family and consumer sciences teacher and department chairwoman in Wilton, North Dakota, according to the school district. The Weld RE-4 board will approve a final contract for Scallon at its April 18 meeting.The salary range the district offered for the job was $195,000-$225,000. Scallon is expected to begin work even before July 1, with the start of the new fiscal year, pending contract negotiations. Interim superintendent Rod Blunck will continue to serve in a support role through June 30, and he’ll continue to work with district staff on a transition plan. The district said information will be provided soon on filling Scallon’s job as the principal at Windsor High.

OLDER HOME? Here Are Some Tips For Avoiding Multiple Home Repairs All At Once BY SHELLEY WIDHALM MARKETING FEATURE

hen one thing in the home needs replacing, it often is the case that something else breaks, wears out or stops working.

Most major systems and purchases have a less than a 25year lifespan, so updating or replacing them can circumvent the hassle and any safety issues. But a better option is preventative maintenance to avoid the big, all-at-once expense. ROOFS AND FLOORS Modern roofing, however, can be expected to last a lifetime since most shingles are designed to withstand years of wear and tear, such as Class 4, or impact-resistant shingles. “There really isn’t anything unless you got water spots on the ceiling, then you need a roof repair,” said Heidi Hixon, manager of AJ Shirk Roofing Co. in Loveland. “Leaks don’t 8 | mywindsor | APRIL 2022

gutter, potentially leading to leak areas. “If you’re missing those, the shingles are going to start cracking and could break,”Hixon said.“It’s good to get that checked every year after a storm.” Unlike roofing, flooring varies in its lifetime from seven to 15-plus years depending on the type. It might need to be replaced if it’s worn out, for a style update or as part of a larger project, such as a remodel of the kitchen or bathroom. “Style-wise, there’s new styles every couple of years,” said Stacy Tadlock, designer for Steamway Floor to Ceiling in Greeley. “If you’re trying to stay current, you can change it every couple of years, but that’s not realistic for a lot of people.”

tile and hardwood, Tadlock said. After that point, the flooring may lose texture or shape or show wear patterns, which can be avoided, in part, by moving furniture every so often, she said.

However, demand hasn’t increased from advancements in technology, especially LED lighting—instead, electrical power usage has decreased, Eggers said.

As for hardwood, if it’s prefinished, it doesn’t need to be recoated, but onsite finishes can be freshened with a recoating every five to seven years.

“Ranch-style homes are by far the easiest to install outlets in an older home,” Eggers said. “Bi-level and twostory homes that are finished can be tricky and challenging, because a lot of times there is no attic or crawl space for the electrician to access to install these additional outlets.”

“You’re wearing and tearing on that finish coat, and it needs to have a new finish put on it. You’re walking and mopping on those areas that eventually wears down the finish,” Tadlock said, adding that the only maintenance for most flooring types is regular cleaning. “There’s not anything they can do to extend the life, since it’s a finished product already.” ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS Another area for updates is the electrical system, though there isn’t a standard or code for maintenance and replacement schedules, said Brent Eggers, operation manager and previous owner of Eggers Electric Inc. in Loveland. However, there are a few things that should be checked on a regular basis to avoid component failure and potential safety issues, he said. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors need to be checked every year and either replaced or the batteries changed. A popular time is during the month of October before the start of winter when temperatures drop and the use of furnaces and gas appliances increases.

The electrical panel should be checked every 10 years by an electrician, who has the skills to tighten any connections that may be loose, a problem that occurs more so in geographic areas with temperature fluctuations, such as Colorado. “Houses today are built pretty well, and electrical codes are updated every three years, which is good,”Eggers said. “In newer homes, you don’t have to look at it as often as older home because the codes have a lot more safety measures

HARDWARE, FIXTURES AND DOORS Cabinet hardware and light fixtures can last indefinitely with proper care, though those can be changed out based on personal taste, said Benny Aste, co-owner and manager of Uncle Benny’s Building Supplies in Loveland since1995. “Things become desirable again when

they’re 50 years old,” Aste said. “In our business, everybody is changing out light fixtures, 15 to 20 years or more, in mass. But it’s not desirable in mass.” Aste recommends choosing hardware and fixtures that are classic in look and timeless in style, instead of going with the trends, such as Tuscan bronze and polished brass that has shifted over to antique brass and matte black. Hardware and fixtures typically don’t need to be replaced, and repairs usually are minor, such as replacing seals in faucets and tightening up cabinet hardware if screws loosen or threads get bare, Aste said.The finish on hardware also might wear off in five to 10 years, depending on usage, he said. Doors, which primarily come in wood, fiberglass and insulated metal, can last a hundred years and typically get replaced based on taste and style, Aste said. “It all comes down to care,” Aste said. “If you take care of it, it will last forever.” The quality of the material can deteriorate from exposure to sun and moisture and if it isn’t regularly maintained. The exposure is less when the door is protected by a large overhang, such as a front porch. If the door is made out of wood and in a high-exposure area, it needs to be repainted, stained or lacquered every one to two years, Aste said. egistration opened March 28 at 8 a.m. for an Aims Community College summer learning program for kids ages 9-15 at all four Aims campuses during the month of June.

College for Kids, or C4K, provides “a unique educational and fun experience” for the students by providing them an opportunity to “go to college,” according to information on the Aims website. College for Kids also allows students ages 13-15 to gain leadership skills as junior assistants in their chosen classes. Registration will be available until May 16 at aims.co/ C4K. More information on the College for Kids program, including course descriptions and registration details, is available at the C4K link. Each Aims campus hosts one four-day session in June.The C4K schedule is as follows: Loveland, June 6-9; Windsor, June 13-16; Fort Lupton, June 20-23 and Greeley, June 2730. The cost of tuition is $75 for the four days on the Greeley, Windsor and Loveland campuses.The C4K program at Fort 12 | mywindsor | APRIL 2022

Lupton is subsidized and costs $25. Students choose two classes during the sessions. The program also includes two snacks and lunch. Students participate in classes of their choice and engage in a variety of topics such as art, music and theater, business, medicine, agriculture, science and law. The programs are intended to introduce kids to possible careers and allow them to begin thinking about what opportunities they might want to pursue in the future. “It’s a really fun, out-of-the-box program that’s highly interactive and gives kiddos a chance to experience what it’s like to be a ‘college student’ by taking classes on a college campus,” said Katherine Jacobs, lifelong learning program coordinator at Aims in a news release from the college. “Students will get to come and learn lifelong skills while making new friends.”

To learn where to start and how to make the most of a remodeling budget, Northern Colorado Life sat down with local craftspeople and designers to discuss some of the best investments in small bathroom remodels.

REMODELGROUNDZERO:IMAGINE THE SPACE Transforming a ho-hum washroom into a home spa starts with envisioning the bathroom finished,said Patrick Farrell, owner of Farrell Home Remodel with his son. He asks clients, “What is important to you? What is your taste for fixtures, tile, toilet, vanity? He added,“Plumbing is not fun to talk about when it works, but when it doesn’t work, it’s nightmare mentality. Whatever the remodel, investing in efficient, up-to-date plumbing is the foundation.”

Rehearsals are in progress for the spring musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” scheduled for April 7-9 at the high school auditorium. The shows will mark a return to traditional spring musical productions at Windsor since the onset of COVID-19. Performances begin at 7 p.m. each day. The cast rehearsals for the show will be suspended next week while 11 students involved with the production and theatre director and English teacher Julie Estrada take a five-day springbreak trip to New York City. The “Little Shop of Horrors” technical crew, though, may continue to work on show preparations through the break. The Weld RE-4 School District is on spring break March 21-25. 18 | mywindsor | APRIL 2022

Estrada, 13 students and five other adults leave March 17 to take in four shows, plus some of the sights and sounds of NYC — including the Statue of Liberty and Radio City Music Hall. They’ll also have a chance to speak with and interact with show business artists and professionals as part of a workshop. “I do this because I think every kid should get out of Windsor and experience the Big Apple,”said Estrada, who will make her seventh trip to New York with Windsor students. “Some students have never been on a plane or never tipped at a restaurant and a lot of other experiences so it’s much bigger than seeing shows.” Estrada said she was initially motivated to arrange the trips for W indsor students because her Longmont High School drama club went to New York the year after she graduated and she was disappointed to miss out.

“In my first month of teaching (in 2001), I said we need to make sure we go,” Estrada added. Estrada organizes the trip every three years. This one was originally scheduled for last year, but was postponed because COVID.The Windsor group are staying at a Hampton Inn in Manhattan — in the heart of the Big Apple. They’re scheduled to see performances of: “Come From Away,” a 2013 musical based on a true story of 6,500 passengers and crew on 38 planes from Europe headed for the U.S. and diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, Canada on Sept. 11; “Company,” the 1970 Stephen Sondheim musical comedy; “Hadestown,” the award-winning musical about the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice; and “The Play that Goes Wrong,”a comedy whodunit set in the 1920s that premiered in London in 2012 and opened on Broadway five years later. The cost of the trip was $2,200 per student, Estrada said, and students earned about $11,000 through fund raising efforts. Approximately 50 Windsor students will be involved in the school’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” Performances feature 30 students on-stage and about 20 students behind the scenes. “Little Shop of Horrors”is about a florist shop worker who raises a man-eating plant.

Given this is the first musical performance since COVID, Estrada said there’s been some anxiety accompanying the production. The department managed one performance of “Mama Mia”in 2020 before the world paused with the onset of the pandemic.The $3,000 fee to rent the man-eating plant added to Estrada’s unease. “The last time we spent money on a show, it closed,” she said. “I didn’t know how many guys would come out for the show. I knew I had ton of talented girls, but I didn’t know what kind of talent I’d have with the guys.”

Curt Kob, who has been a manager at Cedar Supply for about 30 years, said that the emphasis on outdoor areas has been a preoccupation with Northern Colorado homeowners since 2020. “The deck industry is the biggest change we’ve seen,” he said. “People have been at home and making their gardens into an outside room has becoming a primary focal point. Decks are getting larger as people create full-blown outdoor kitchens with barbecues and even refrigerators. It’s like in the ‘70s when people were putting hot tubs out there. For a number of years, we’ve seen a rise in cedar and redwood for decks. Mostly people are choosing redwood or cedar stains—they want it to look natural. We caution people not to use films or sealers on the wood because they look cool on TV but in the real world when it needs to be reapplied it has to be completely stripped off.”

PICTURE PERFECT Shannon Moreau knows exactly what it means to have an insta-ready yard. To answer questions about what looks good in photos, the outdoor manager of Fort Collins Nursery just thought about what she had personally instagrammed! “Anything that is different, that has a different color or texture makes your space look unique. For example, you might think of variegated leaves instead of just green. That would give your photos the right pop of color.” I love pansies,”she said.“They’re an annual that is great as a filler while you’re waiting for your perennials to fill out. I love pansies for brushing away the gray doldrums of winter.” It’s obvious how Moreau feels about plants because of how often she uses the word “love” in her conversation. “A lot of people love petunias for color,” she said. “I love verbenas, the short and the tall. And there are so many others, like marigolds for gardens. There are zinnia or dahlias as cut flowers in quite a lot of different sizes & colors. We see them used in bouquets, and they’ve risen in popularity now for weddings.” One of her favorites for summer is salvia.“They’re beautiful and range in height—some are very large so if height is important they are really reliable. Hydrangeas are lovely, too. They are a little old fashioned, like daylilies and iris and roses. It’s a funny thing that everyone thinks of iris and daylilies as only yellow or blue, but there are so many beautiful colors and shapes, that if they’re not coming back into fashion they should be.”. She’s said landscapers are filling backyards with “a lot of really gorgeous roses in a wide variety of color, shapes and sizes. When you need low maintenance, roses are long blooming, reliable, and common.” Of course Moreau loves trees, vegetables, climbing vines and herbs. But one of her unexpected suggestions for Instagramable gardens is ornamental grasses. “That will switch up the textures in your photos,”she said.“If you want to make your backyard look really different, find big or small varieties of grasses and add them in.”And you can be certain Moreau loves those ornamental grasses just as much as she loves the pansies. GOING NATIVE Bryan Fischer, a curator and horticulturist with the Gardens on Spring Creek, thinks there are three plants that would instantly make a garden photo-ready. He feels these work especially well: Artemisia filifolia or sand sage, the Agastache species of cultivars and hybrids also called hyssop or hummingbird mint and Eriogonum umbellatum. “I personally think a lot of plants with finer textures make photos look good,” Fischer said. “The artemisia moves in the breeze and adds texture and movement that reads well 22 | mywindsor | APRIL 2022

in photos. I really like the agastaches.When they came out there were just a couple of varieties; now there are dozens of hybrids in all sorts of colors and species that attract hummingbirds and bees. The eriogonum (also known as the sulphur flower) grows well in our area, blooming earlier in the year. It has golden or yellow flowers and can grow up to four feet tall.” Fischer recommends area gardeners attend the Spring Plant Sale from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on May 1415 at the Gardens. A lot of people are concentrating on adding native plants to their yards, but Fischer doesn’t want to be pinned down on that. “I personally think it’s most helpful to talk about where a plant is native to rather than blanket labeling it as “native”or “non-native,”Fischer said.”For example, a plant like sunset hyssop thrives in our gardens and is a favorite of our local hummingbirds, but is not technically native to the state. At the same time, many native plants, like our alpine cushion plants, are native but can be challenging to grow in many of our gardens! Since plants don’t recognize our geopolitical boundaries and move gradually over time due to environmental change (like Ice Age glaciation), it’s tough to simplify what is/isn’t native as well as the benefits or drawbacks of a particular plant in the garden. AIMS COMMUNITY COLLEGE BREAKS GROUND ON WINDSOR CAMPUS EXPANSION TAILORED TO EMERGENCY SERVICES BY MORGAN MCKENZIE

ims Community College officials on Tuesday broke ground for a new academic building and simulation city training yard at the Windsor campus. The college has outgrown the space at its Windsor campus, home to the Automotive & Technology Center and the Public Safety Institute, since its opening in 2010 at 1130 Southgate Drive. The new three-story, 38,000-squarefoot building will provide more classrooms for general education courses, academic simulators, a learning commons with a library and computer lab and multiple social places for students to gather, according to Aims. The $18 million project will bring hands-on opportunities for 24 | mywindsor | APRIL 2022

students in first responder, criminal justice and aviation fields. As a way to simulate real-world situations in the world of public safety, five buildings will be added to a simulation city training yard. The training space will include: •

two two-story simulated houses with basements, kitchens, living rooms, hallways with furniture, fixtures, doors and windows.

a commercial building to simulate everything from a bank robbery to a convenience store fire.

•

A simulated four-way street intersection that includes traffic signs, stoplights and a fire hydrant.

•

one search-and-rescue building to simulate navigating through

hallways, attics and narrow shafts. •

building for equipment storage.

College CEO and president Leah Bornstein spoke about the facility’s potential to educate students in different programs. “The instructors can create a scenario where maybe the police get there first, so the police academy students get there first, and then the fire science students next, and then the EMTs get there third, and they all can learn how to work an actual situation,” Bornstein said. The new space will entail a more inclusive atmosphere — including a prayer room, a lactation room and gender-inclusive restrooms — for students from different backgrounds. The project also calls for a bistro for

services for our entire community.” The nation is facing a police shortage with 86% of law enforcement departments reporting a staffing shortage, according to a 2020 survey from the National Police Foundation. The college’s addition of a training yard is just one of the many steps Aims is taking to replenish the law enforcement deficit found in local jurisdictions and across the country. Along with improvements in education and training, Aims has partnered with Weld County Employment Services to help police academy students with tuition assistance, along with exam, equipment, training and transportation costs. Speakers at the groundbreaking included Bornstein, Windsor Mayor Pro Tempore Ken Bennett and college board of trustees chairman Lyle Achziger. The expansion of the campus will allow aviation classes to move to the Windsor campus and add 70 new parking spaces.

“Basement remodels are being used for creating more family space and hang out areas,”Yordt says. As families grow, older children are getting new bedrooms in the finished basement spaces. But Yordt says she’s also seeing some families add bedrooms for grandparents or nannies who may be staying an extended amount of time. One of superintendent Travis Kinning’s favorite projects to date was finishing a 1,500 square-foot basement, which featured 12 foot high ceilings with an indoor batting cage, a creative reading area, and built-in elevated beds in the bedrooms. he four seasons in Colorado have always offered varied weather patterns, from blizzards to heat waves to downpours.

Recently, however, residents of the Front Range have had to learn to deal with a relatively new seasonal condition, one that’s unfortunately become a matter of course in the American West. The past several years have seen straight, solid weeks of hazy, smoke-filled air conditions across the metro area, from Longmont to Denver to Aurora to Boulder. While forest fires have always been a factor in Colorado, this summer smoke season is a relatively new circumstance for many in terms of its intensity and duration. We talked to Jeff Richard from Northern Colorado Air in Loveland about finding creative, affordable and effective ways to make indoor spaces reliable shelters from the most oppressive smoky conditions that summer in Colorado can throw at us.

While the long-term solutions may demand large-scale, humanwide efforts to curb climate change and pollution, residents on the Front Range can still take measures to keep the smoke clear of their living spaces.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST STEPS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE INDOOR AIR, ESPECIALLY IN WHAT’S COME TO BE ‘SMOKE SEASON’ IN COLORADO? According to Richard, the most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to modify the means that air circulates in your living space. For homeowners, that means adjusting the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) unit to meet the demands of prolonged periods spent indoors. In other words, it means getting filters that match the demands of the moment. “It used to be we’d just do a regular filter with what we’d call a ‘corn cob catcher.’ Those days are gone. We’re spending 80 to 90 percent of our time indoors, so our filter quality has gone up significantly,” Richard said, referring to old-school filters that were only designed to capture large chunks of particulate matter. Now, the best filters are geared toward capturing microscopic particles that affect the very air we breathe.“There’s a HEPA Hospital-Grade Filter that’s carbon activated; that’s MERV 16,” he said, referring to the MERV rating system for filters, “PURE AIR is a filter that has UV light. It has a catalyst and the MERV 16 all in the same cabinet.That’s the top end of filtration.” He added that Northern Colorado Air also offers additions that can be inserted into a home HVAC system, including an i-WAV-R unit (which runs about $300), that will kill more than 99% of pathogens, including SARS and COVID. “There’s a lot more equipment and indoor air quality features that we can offer,”he said.“It depends on the installation, size of system, duct work, etc.”

These pieces can range from high-scale, deluxe models like the HATHASPACE Smart Air Purifier (which retails for about $550) to more affordable models, like the Blueair Blue Pur purifier, which runs closer to $150. Richard warned that these portable options are not as effective as systemwide options, as they usually impact the air in a single room. “It doesn’t take care of the whole house. Those smells and contaminants can seep out through your duct work,” he said. “The advantage of a whole system – if you run that through your furnace – it’s going to go through your whole system.” That’s another reason that the most natural solution can be effective. When the outside air is clear, and when the smoke and haze has retreated, it’s always a good idea to get fresh air circulating through the house via open doors and windows. “Any time you can dilute the indoor air with fresh air from outside is a big win,” he said.
