Ways to Celebrate Love Y ove our Pals

Nowadays it seems the valentine decor starts creeping into store entryways before you’ve even put the last gift under the Christmas tree Soon enough, L-O-V-E is everywhere — social media posts, email blasts, community events… there’s no hiding if that’s what you’re looking to do. Thankfully, there’s also a plethora of modern, alternative ways to enjoy the holiday.

Treat Yourself

1. Self care day at home or at your favorite, local spa - bath, nail care, face treatment, spruce up the pearly whites, massage, hair mask, try new makeup or go make up free.

2. If food is the way to your heart, make yourself whatever sounds good, go out for a nice solo date, or order your favorite takeout.

3. Binge movies, TV series, video games, or spend the day reading.

4. Buy yourself flowers or have a little shopping spree.

5. Eat dessert.

Make It a Day of Gratitude

10. Write someone a letter, send someone a card, send a "thinking of you" text, make time to call or facetime someone that you haven’t in awhile - no matter the distance, admire all the people you have in your life

11. Journal about all that you have to be grateful for, everything from the crisp mountain air to the clothing on your back, how far you’ve come and how much you’re able to work toward

12 Volunteer or donate to be reminded of all that you have.

13 Deliver small gifts to those you’re most grateful for nearby

14. Revist a fond place to cherish past memories.

When we focus on our gratitude, the tide of disappoinTment goes out and the tide of love rushes in."

Remember, Valentine’s Day is only one day a year. You’ve got 364 days and many years that are dedicated to you embracing the life you’ve been given and

HOW TO LIVE A LIFE YOULove

Carolyn Horton and Harold Holter know the secret to a happy life, though they do not completely agree on the details. For Horton, 87, it is healthy eating and exercise. For Holter, 84, it is “getting all the education you can” and hobbies that engage the mind.

For both of them, their recent marriage has added great joy to their already full lives.

Horton and Holter met at The Winslow in Fort Collins, an independent senior living community by Columbine Health. Horton noticed Holter soon after he moved into the community about a year ago. “I investigated all the men around,” she recalled. “I chose him, went after him and caught him.”

Holter said he was an easy catch. “She’s beautiful and a

good conversationalist,” he said. They were married in September at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Collins “I’m happier than I even expected to be,” Horton said.

But marriage, she added, “could only happen because we stayed healthy. That’s the important thing.” Horton walks about two hours a day. A retired dietitian, she has long been careful to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

In fact, she first connected with Holter through her wellness routine. They began meeting for dinner each evening, and she invited him to walk with her.

to “the good life” has been his career as a mechanical engineer He served as a lead engineer or project manager on hospital construction projects throughout the United States and overseas. “It’s a nice thing to be working in Paris, eating at the best restaurants on someone else’s dollar — or franc,” he said with a laugh Along the way, he learned four languages,

which he said helped keep his mind sharp

Essential to “the good life” is staying busy, they agreed. Horton attends “every activity they put on,” referring to daily events at The Winslow.

Holter has painted since seventh grade, when a teacher encouraged his talent.

For years, he painted from photographs he took while visiting scenic locations. Today,

the apartment he shares with Horton is adorned with his artwork. “Doing an activity like painting, something you concentrate your efforts on, is very important,” he said Setting, and often attaining, goals has enriched Horton’s life “I wake up and say, ’This is my interest and what I am going to pursue today,’” she said. “I like to live my life in order.”

hen it comes to Valentine’s Day, giving red roses seems like a given, but a few local florists offer tons of themed bouquets, arrangements and even houseplants that also bring love to mind.

“When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I’ll change up the color palette and variety of sizes,” said Alex VanLemmeren, owner and lead floral designer of Wild Posies Floral & Plant Boutique. Wild Posies is a full-service florist that opened its downtown Loveland location in 2023, but has been in business for eight years.

VanLemmeren’s valentine flowers will be within a palette of reds, burgundies and deep pinks in a variety of options. Her paper-wrapped floral bouquets will be sized mini to deluxe, and her floral arrangements will be cut and designed in different sized vases. She also will have new products like candles, Valentine’s Day cards and other gift items to

accompany her flowers.

FullBloom LOCAL LOVE IN

“I get a lot of requests for arrangements that don’t have roses around Valentine’s Day,” VanLemmeren said “I think a lot of women prefer more unique, interesting flowers instead of the typical red roses.”

VanLemmeren also sells a lot of houseplants during Valentine’s Day, which for some husbands and partners in long-term rela-

tionships symbolize long-lasting love Flowers, too, show romantic love and appreciation and “naturally make people happy,” she said

“It’s a nice gesture of showing somebody that you’re thinking about them,” VanLemmeren said. “They don’t last, so it gives you a sense to stop and appreciate the smaller moments in life.”

VanLemmeren displays her

flowers at her store, selling them there and through phone or online orders for pickup or local deliveries She purchases the flowers from a large, national wholesaler, working with one to three local growers during the state’s flower growing season, typically May to August

Prior to Valentine’s Day, VanLemmeren will host a Galantine’s Party with local, female-owned vendors offering flash tattoos, hair tinsels and face gems The date of the event, plus those of one to two floral design classes, will be listed on her website at wildposies.com

“When it comes to floral design, my background in fine art definitely comes into play I studied color theory and worked with different textures,” VanLemmeren said “That helps with creating

one-of-a-kind, unique floral arrangements.”

The owners of Earle’s Loveland Floral & Gifts, a full-service flower shop founded in 1950 in Loveland, set themselves apart with their quality, long-lasting flowers. They also offer an extensive gift line, provide pick-ups and deliveries, and have an in-house coffee shop, Earle’s Coffee. They offer unique, custom arrangements and are particular about where they source their flowers, working with a Denver distributor and buying locally when they can, such as lilies and tulips.

“We are a one-stop shop — you can get your gifts, cards, flowers and chocolates here, because we are all around,” said Elizabeth Parker, owner of Earle’s “Flowers are great because you don’t always get fresh flowers in the middle of winter. It’s a fun thing to enjoy, to brighten up your day… It just makes people happy.”

This year, because Valentine’s Day is on Saturday, couples may be concentrating less on flowers and more on their date experiences — Earle’s can add to that experience by delivering flowers directly to the restaurant or other date location.

those beautiful flowers to express that,” said Kathi Lind, partner at Earle’s. “The reason to come to a flower shop for flowers is you’re getting much better quality and you’re getting it arranged specific to what you want to keep that special romance to it.”

Kelly James, wedding florist and owner of Lilac and Sage Studio in Loveland, provides that quality by being creative with her bouquets and arrangements, focusing on what’s artistic and also trending.

“We don’t take the traditional standard order We put a lot of creative heart and soul into each design,” James said about her full-service flower shop, which was founded in 2021 and offers plants, candles, jewelry and other items. “My clients choose me because they like our style of art and our art form.”

James purchases her flowers from a distributor in Denver, but buys locally what’s in season, such as dahlias, hyacinth, tulips and peonies. Flowers also have a beauty that constantly changes, such as the colors and petals, and are something to enjoy in the moment, she said.

“We need to hold onto those things that make us feel special and are a celebration and use

“I see them as a way to be really, really present,” James said. “It’s a gift where you’re inspired to appreciate something, be in the moment and soak up the beauty.”

HOW NORTHERN COLORADO IS RECLAIMING ROMANCE THIS FEBRUARY

very Monday morning, FeelLove Coffee in Loveland hosts “Monday Mugs & Mingles,” a no-pressure, relaxed event where singles are encouraged to get off the apps and into the real world with actual face-to-face conversations. In fact, phones are not even allowed.

Loveland resident Deborah Jayson met her partner, Dave, over coffee and bagels last fall. “It’s a great opportunity for people who are ’all swiped out’ with those impersonal dating apps,” says Jayson, “and a fun, positive way to start the new work week.”

Though dating apps seem to be popular, they’re not known for being overly successful Luckily, the NoCo area is brimming with opportunities for getting out and meeting people

live and in person while also learning something new, getting a little exercise, or just relaxing over a cocktail or a great meal

CELEBRATE THE SWEETHEART

As someone who views hundreds or maybe even thousands of dating profiles per week, let’s just say that I’ve seen a lot of dating profile photos. Too many dating profile photos. So, I know a thing or tw about a good pho to I know even more about a bad picture and how one seemingly deceptive photo can turn into a left swipe faster than you can say, “Why doesn’ this person have a photos without sunglasses or a hat on?”

ing apps, they are first doing a cursory scan through your profile to figure out one thing and one thing only: What does this person look like? They want to know who is actually going to show up on the date

When people are on the dat-

And something that gets he way of that me and time again is obscuring your face in any way, no matter how dramatic the background or how cute your hair looked that day Even something as simple as a cap, looking behind you, or a shadow covering every-

thing from your nose to your forehead could make someone think you’re trying to hide something about your appearance And, again, since people are making such quick decisions, it doesn’t take much for a person to move onto the next potential match.

Sunglasses are the biggest culprit (though, during COVID, masks were). I love sunglasses as much as the next person, but they completely change the way a person looks in a photo In some cases, it’s hard to believe a shot with sunglasses and a shot without sunglasses is even the same person. One fun way to incorporate your shades is to put them on top of your head when a photo is being taken. It keeps your hair out of your face and creates an instantly casual look that’s perfect for dating apps (I recommend clients take pics with sunglasses on their head all th time!)

Like it or not, the photos are the biggest — and first — component of how someone is looking at your profile I always recommend five photos (or six on some apps, like Hinge, that have a requirement), starting with a clear portrait of your face as the first one. The next photo should be a full-body picture, preferably standing and ideally wearing something like you might wear on a date. The third photo should be something I call “message bait,” or you doing an interesting activity that will catch someone’s attention and prompt them to ask a question (Think hiking in a beautiful spot, doing comedy on stage, enjoying wine at a winery, or seeing a lion on safari.) For the rest of the photos, they should represent you doing something in your element, whatever that means to you

While some apps allow you to connect to your Instagram account, I wouldn’t recommend it When it comes to your photos, less is more Unfortunately (and unfairly), people will find one photo they don’t like and dismiss you for it And with Instagram, it simply provides too much access to your life that a stranger should not yet be privy to Meet someone in person before they’re allowed to see your whole family’s Thanksgiving album When it comes to clothing, I suggest your photos show you wearing something you would pick for a date Maybe jeans d nice top with ots for meeting at the bar or a more dressy look for dinner at a new restaurant that opened up in town

At the end of the day, people want to see who is going to show up for the date—nothing more, nothing less. Sharing current, realistic and clear, unobscured photos will ensure you start the relationship off on the right foot

February is one of my favorite months of the year In a season where love is all around, it’s also when I get to celebrate the birth of my hero — my dad While no man is perfect, he was my first experience of unconditional love and we were very much alike. Similar to many father-daughter relationship dynamics, he was a role model for my future relationships and offered an emotional bond that would never be broken. There are many types of love

throughout life, and ways to celebrate them, as Valentine’s Day rolls around. The love our mother and father give us: a strong foundation which plays a significant part in our lives. Children often use this time to bring valentine boxes to school with hopes of receiving reciprocated "Be Mine" or "Will You Be My Valentine" messages. Lovers will be rushing to buy a heart shaped box of chocolates

Here are the 7 types of love:

● Eros — passionate

● Philia — deep friendship

● Storge — family bonding

● Pragma — enduring commitment

● Ludus — playing

● Agape — selfless

● Philautia — self love

or planning romantic trysts to celebrate their special someone. If you’re single, you may be going out with friends hoping the “one” is right around the corner Love takes on various forms. Without it, people can be weak-

er mentally or physically, and sometimes fail to thrive Children who are deprived of love often develop cognitive, physiological and mental impairment. Without love we often feel less self esteem or a loss of self altogether With

love we feel safe, cared for, esteemed and more whole.

Here are the 7 types of love:

l Eros — passionate

l Philia — deep friendship

l Storge — family bonding

l Pragma — enduring commitment

l Ludus — playing

l Agape — selfless

l Philautia — self love

The highest form of love is generally considered Agape – a Greek term for unconditional, sacrificial, selfless love that offers the best attention toward another person without expectation of anything in return An example of this would be parenthood Friendship, the Philia love type, is another blessing and joy that should be treasured. Friends are important to our personal growth and success, often found in people from work, a hobby, business connection, over social media, etc. Friends and mentors from work can provide encouragement and support by listening to our vent sessions, fostering growth through good times and bad, and keeping us moving forward.

When choosing a friend, listen to your inner voice, intuitiveness and power of attraction Look for someone who shares your same values and ask yourself if this person will respect your decisions and freedom of choice, even if it differs from theirs Dependability, commitment and communication are powerful tools in any relationship – don’t take them for granted. Any true friendship

will last over time and distance. There’s an old girl scout song that goes "Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and one is gold. Friends keep us young.”

Science suggests that strong, meaningful companions can keep us younger by slowing down the biological clock and lowering levels of inflammation in our bodies. Companionship is simply having someone to share moments, joy and fun with, at any age. Missing out on companionship can lead to increased loneliness, sadness and feeling misunderstood The human need for belonging is crucial for emotional connection.

Furthermore, when we lose the love of a romantic partner, or friend, it is truly traumatic, causing significant pain and confusion. We must allow time to heal, foster personal growth, practice self care or consult a professional if needed

No matter how you choose to celebrate love this year — with family, friends, a partner or relishing in memories of past loved ones, I encourage you to do it with intention and joy!
